The third (and possibly final) critter in my bjd pet ball series. It's not done yet here, I have more stuff to add, and the horns should be attached, but this gives the general idea of what it's going to be like.
He's nearly done! Mostly I just have to work on the joints, which I am not so great at. I tried him out with the plain acrylic half-dome eyes I've been using as the default for all of these, but I also put in some 16mm eyes that I had lying around.
Thanks! I did some mold making today, to get a prototype. Alas mostly what I got was further evidence of the reason why I send these off to get cast rather than doing it myself! I'll have another try later today, probably, but I still don't expect to get a perfect one, I'd just like to get a little closer.
The casts may not be perfect, but they look good! A lot easier to imagine the final version than I could looking at the multi-color original, frankly... I'm impressed that you can work like that, I think it would drive me crazy. XD
Well, it's what I get for buying an assorted color apoxie sculpt pack. I hate to just throw the stuff out, but it sat around for ages not getting used, so I finally decided I'd better do *something* or other with it! But there's only a little bit of each color.
i love it . and the casting aren't that bad way better than i can do .i have no casting skillzzz. cant wait to see more progress
Thanks! I have finally gotten one pretty good cast of the face, and one of the back plate, but then I ran out of resin. I've ordered more, so I should have a complete test doll shortly.
Black resin test cast. Working with black resin is even more of a pain than the white stuff. :P But I really wanted to see this guy in black. So I did a black test cast, and though it’s still not perfect, it’s pretty darn awesome! (I still am waiting on mold rubber in the mail, so I can't do the wings and tail, but my black dye arrived today, so I had to try it out.)
Finally, a pic of the whole doll! Still very much a test cast, it's a bit of a mess still and there's lots of work to do, but all the pieces are together at least.
Here's the black and white test casts, all finished. They're also showing off the two different kind of eyes, solid flat-backed acrylics and realistic glass. I am SO frigging excited for these. I want to start the kickstarter now! But I really should finish the unicorns first, and I need to test out some colors on these guys, I have a shiny new set of pastels to try. (These do also show why I'm having them cast by somebody else. The black dragon in particular has a lot of problems, but the white isn't perfect either.)
I'm not sure the post on the back of those would fit. I have a few safety eyes rattling about, I should try a pair and see.
I just finished painting the test casts. They came out AWESOME! I'm really excited to get to the kickstarter campaign to get these cast, though I still have lots to do before I can launch it. Here's some pics of the painted test casts, including one with the fennec that was my first pet ball, which shows that these are a little bit larger. (I still consider these a WIP even though the test casts are all done, because they're such a flawed mess of bubbles and things, so these dolls won't be finished until the kickstarter is over, I've had them all cast, and the final casts are painted.)
I just launched the kickstarter campaign to organize pre-orders and raise the funds to get these cast. I'm pretty excited. So close to having them all the way finished now!
Man, it takes FOREVER for a kickstarter campaign to finish. Still a week left, and two weeks after that before I get all the funds, and then another month at least while these get cast! I really want to get the final ones right now!
Black is terrific. I love your little dragon. (I liked your default eyes best). This is going to be so great. Can't wait to see what happens next. Thanks for sharing.
