Hello! Long time no see, DoA I’m a beginner sewist and i’ve been dying to try my hand at drafting my own patterns for my dolls - specifically my 1/6 scale doll (who is on a..4.5 or 5.5 Guard Love body.) Not looking to make anything extravagant, mostly just dresses and shorts/pants right now. I am just incredibly lost at the moment, and any advice or resources would be appreciated! Let me know if i need to clarify anything further as well. ❤️
Hello! That sounds like an ambitious task already! Here are some tutorials that may be helpful to you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTJS-Cak4Po Lomi also has a website where she lists out pre-made pattern for her dolls for free. Just remember to check for the sizing to your own doll. And if the sizes are slightly off, you can still use Dollightful's idea to modify them. Good luck!
When I first started sewing, what helped me a lot was making duct tape patterns. You start off by wrapping your doll in plastic wrap and then covering that with duct tape, drawing the garment on the doll and then cutting along the drawn lines. You mentioned drafting specifically so if its drafting with measurements then the Lomi videos are going to be your best best. Always happy to help though if you get stuck or wanna learn more about duct tape patterning or the draping method. Good luck in your sewing adventures.
One thing I have often used for making patterns for a tailored garment (vs stretchy fabric) is to pin with paper towels right over my doll. No doll has ever been harmed (though I could see myself easily scratching a body blush by accident if they had them..) I think there are two main types of drafting which is one, more math based, scaling things up and down and going from measurements, and the other is more visual and hands on (which is how I go). If you are really interested in this and have no experience with drafting clothes yet I recommend finding a vintage sewing book at a second hand book store that will show you and tell you all about the different shapes that create certain sleeves and articles and talk about ways to place the darts for different effects. This gives you an idea of the tools of creating a design and helps me decide how to put ideas in motion. Start simple and work on your basics first. If you have a doll you could see wearing a sundress, that is an easy place to start. You can use paper towel to wrap the bust area and trim to size and pin any necessary dart positions on your model. From there, gather a skirt and sew that under the bodice and then straps and snaps and done! I find that dresses and pants/shorts are super conducive to puzzling out with paper towels pinned over the doll. Good luck! I hope you have a lot of fun!
