Eyes Doming for resin eyes

May 21, 2021

    1. Recently just started trying to create my own UV resin eyes for my dolls!
...but one of the big challenges I've come across is create a perfect "high" (but not really) dome since the viscosity seems to change and the dome shape starts breaking after I torch/heat it to remove bubbles.

By the time I grab my UV light to cure it, the dome has started to break and move out of the iris area and become kind of wonky :(
I have tried my best to salvage it by adding additional resin to the half-cured overhangs to smooth out the shape but it can only do so much.[IMG][IMG]

Is there a secret technique or procedure that people normally go through to prevent this from happening?
The flower eye mold's shape makes it harder for a concave hole to fill the iris in two steps, but I think the 2nd one might be more doable :huh?:

    2. Hmm. Heating the resin will definitely break surface tension as you've mentioned. Could you heat it up and let it cool before dropping it onto the eye instead?

Alternately, have you tried building the dome in layers one drop at a time?

I haven't tried making high domes yet, my only eyes so far have tiny 4mm irises. I'm just spitballing ideas but hopefully it's a start. Good luck!

    3. Heating the resin before doming sounds like a possibility! I'll give it a a shot and see how it works :')

I tried to build the dome by adding drops on slowly but I think that's what's causing the bubbles, so I'm guessing that curing each dropped layer might fix it according to that suggestion? We'll have to see, since the edges of the iris does get filled so it doesn't have an edge to create the dome on afterwards hmm

smaller iris really are a lot easier to dome with, really jealous honestly :'D
Thanks so much for your suggestion!

    4. For eyes with patterns that I really like, I would use a craft knife to adjust the dome area. It is time consuming and the end result depends a lot on one's own judgement, but this way one can have more control over the dome shape. After getting the desired shape, apply another coating uv and the eyes will be glossy again.
BTW if you want to try this method, it is safer to hold the blade perpendicular to the surface you want to modify and go in the left-right direction. This way you won't cut your fingers by accident. Sandpaper can probably achieve the same but I prefer blade for its speed.

    5. That actually sounds like the perfect way to tackle it, I'll give that a shot! Worked with wood before with carving but never considered carving into UV resin as well hmm
Was worried that sanding resin would cause issues to the adhesion of the new coat but I'm guessing it works out just fine then?

Thanks so much for your advice!

    6. theoretically sanding the resin creates a surface with more friction as compared to directly adding another layer, so it won't be a problem. As for my own experience, I've never have resin layer separation problem before despite doing even the white eye base layer by layer. So the conclusion is that it should be fine!

    7. hello, i make resin eyes and what i do so that resin will not bleed after heating is to dome it layer by layer. sometimes i turn it upside done when it's starts to bleed. hehe this might help <3

    8. heyos dolltita! thanks for the tip ^^
when you say layer for layer, do you mean you start with a tiny dome, cure then add another layer on top (and repeat until it reaches the edge of the iris?)

edit: also just took a look at your shop, the eyes look gorgeous btw!

    9. yees you're exactly right! <3 i know it takes a lot of patience. hahaha, you'll get it with 2-3 layers depending on how high the dome would you like it to be. i usually put one layer or 2 layers then put it in an upside-down position so it will make something like a cone dome, i dunno what it's called. haha! then cure and put 3rd layer. it really depends on the size too.

thanks for the appreciation! =) i hope I'm able to help with doming the eyes. <3
