Dollstown Mini discussion part 5

Feb 15, 2014

    1. We're trying to build in rest days (like today) to our schedule, where we don't have to do any sight seeing. The dolls aren't getting much opportunity to get out - most of the things we're doing aren't offering dolly photo ops. January has been the lucky one so far. I'm keeping my eyes open for doll scale stuff but haven't bought anything yet, although cheap secondhand American Girl/My Generation stuff doesn't seem uncommon, and works well for DT7s & DT5s none of what I've seen is right for January, Arin, or Winnie yet.

They must have re-titled it for the American market - the first books was "Murder Most Unladylike" when it was first published over here (the series was called "Wells and Wong Mysteries" then too). I hope you enjoy it.

My Arin is so happy about that - another "old fashioned" child who can cross the timelines and be his friend.

That sounds like fun. Good luck with it!

I toy with the idea of Chalet School uniforms (brown tunics, white blouses and flame ties) for some of my girls. I've loved the Chalet School books since I discovered a second-hand copy of Carola Storms the Chalet School as a child and loved the descriptions of the early uniforms. I went as far as buying some fine brown wool for the tunics some time ago, but now have no idea where in the doll-fabric stash I put it.

      Teddy

    2. Alice80 - I hope you are able to get your dolls out and play soon. I know myself I have gone long periods of doing nothing with my dolls due to various circumstances and it is easy to not miss them. But, I am always happy when I get the dollie bug again and start playing.

Xiaoli and Jane - I like how your dolls time travel. I have always been interested in reincarnation and time travel. My SDs are all gods and goddesses and are immortal. I always loved the Highlander series and I am a fan of the Outlander books, though I have not watched the series. I think it is so neat that you have your dolls who are from different time periods all being part of the HHC.

Teddy - I started reading the Wells & Wong book at lunch today. I have to say, I was rather happy with myself, thinking I had come up with this great idea of the girls being amateur sleuths and was going to have them start with simple cases like missing household items and proceed in difficulty. Only to discover my ideas aren't unique at all. There is already a book series about this that has been out for quite awhile. But, I didn't know about the book series so I am going to claim this clever idea is all my own! :dance

I am so verklempt! I was checking on the status of my order once again. I checked on the invoice and it says "Pre-order." When I first placed the order it said In Stock, but by the time the order was processed the stock must have been depleted and I now have to wait. Boo Hoo!

    3. Of course it's your own - you hadn't even heard of the Wlels and Wong books when you came up with it.

I think a lot of stuff is listed as In Stock, when it actually isn't.

      Bad luck!

      Teddy

    4. I second Teddy! It is your own idea :3nodding:
But I am so sorry about your order being a 'pre-order' one now *sigh*.............does it say anywhere on the site how long pre-orders can take?

    5. The preorder takes a while. I don't worry about it because Dollstown has always been so good to work with. When he started giving the certificate of authenticity with the dolls I asked and he sent them to me for all the dolls and heads I had previously ordered. My full 17 yo girl that was pre order was ordered October 1 and shipped January 12th - so it was a bit of a wait. But Amy (just the head) was ordered April 20th.

    6. Teddy and Jane - Thanks; I will claim the idea as my own. :3nodding:

Jane - DT states the pre-orders take one-two months to process. That will give me time to finish my painting project in the bedroom and then finish unpacking the last of the moving boxes. I will have my doll stuff organized as well as my craft stuff and can then have adequate space to sew. I will make the girls some outfits. At least that will help me pass the time until Lilianna arrives.

Xiaoli and Teddy - Your comments about school outfits did give me thought as to making outfits for my girls since they are at a boarding school. But, they are rebels. They won't wear them!

    7. Gosh! That was a long wait........at least I know the 'worst' if I am able to order my Amy in the sales period time.
And I will have to do as Coleen is doing and use that time to think as I do other things about the house and garden. But it really helps to know these times when choosing a face-up artist!

    8. I am used to having to wait but I was bummed because I thought the doll was in stock. I usually order my dolls on a layaway plan but I paid for this doll in full because she was in stock. My Deogi I ordered on layaway on 4/16/15 and she was shipped 6/17. Most companies start production on layaway dolls after the first payment so the wait doesn't bother me as I am still paying for my doll. Soom is the only company I've ordered from that starts production after the doll is paid in full so you have a really long wait. I did wait 5 months for a Fairyland doll due to large order.

    9. I can fully imagine your huge disappointment ((hugs))
Do you think it is worth writing to DT to say that you are disappointed that the order status changed while you were paying for your doll? I guess you will gain nothing.
But it would let them know what huge disappointment this has been, and maybe they will learn to be a little more careful with 'stock or pre-order' on their website.

    10. I can't say for certain that it didn't change before I ordered because I put it in my cart & then removed it & then put it in the cart while I was dithering. And I switched colors so maybe the oriental was out of stock but not the other colors I looked at. I'm not upset with Dollstown, but just the situation. And I don't want to be an "ugly American."

    11. I quite understand ((hugs)).......................you will have to dream lots while you wait *sigh*

    12. The mailman arrived yesterday bearing packages! Unfortunately I was gone, and one package I have to pick up at the Post Office tomorrow. I received a pair of shoes for the girls. The other package is for my Irrealdoll. I was at an annual spring barn sale. I bought a dining room table and a small plastic camera for the girls. Unfortunately, the camera is too large so I'll have to look elsewhere. What is a detective to do without a camera?

I may have to rethink my plans for AngelToast as the artist for Amy. I read an announcement here on DoA that she will be doing faceups for Luts.

    13. I saw a couple of novelty erasers that were like old fashioned cameras a couple of days ago, but I can't remember where - they were just bout right for a 7 or 5 year girl.... Of course it depends if you wnated an old fashioned photo camera or a modern digital one.

      Teddy

    14. Hello, Sorry to jump in. I've been out of the dolly world for a bit. Taking a break, but I saw a smaller version of Amy on Flickr. I've always loved her, but she was too big for me. So I was very excited to see her, but I went to the website and she isn't listed. Was she a limited?

ETA: Nevermind. I found her on the sales page. DOH!

    15. Well I never Coleen! It must be a weekend for receiving doll shoes as I too had a pair of Ajumapama shoes arrive for my girls! What type do you get?

And if your girls need a modern camera, I would recommend this a fabulous digital camera prop......a Canon EOS 7D (novelty memory stick really)

And as you can see it works perfectly scale-wise for the DT7 girls.........as they are really child size SD dolls and a digital camera would be big in their hands. Well I think so anyway :whee:

I am sorry about the AngelToast news for you *sigh* good luck in finding a new face-up artist.

Great that you found the sale post DancingBee......it took me a while to find it first time too!
      So have you ordered??????

    16. DancingBee - I think we all take a break from time to time. Welcome back! Several of us have already ordered or are trying to decide on Amy.

Jane - I ordered from Evasdoll; they are tie oxfords with a white "leather" toe and the remainder of the shoe is white with blue flowers. Great Mori syle shoes! I like the scale of the camera. The one I found is too wide; covers her entire face!

Teddy - I am really enjoying the Wells & Wong mystery. I was laughing aloud on the plane Friday night!

    17. Yay!

Will the books influence your girls in their detective work?

      Teddy

    18. Teddy - I think the books will influence the girls in part. I can't help but think that Anneliese, who is older, will be the one in charge, such as Daisy Wells. Lilianna is younger, so she will be taking direction, like Hazel Wong. However, instead of the mean prefects my girls will have a friend in their dorm manager.

Jane - Thanks for the awesome pic of the "camera." I just bought one on the popular auction site. Pricey, but these are now out of production I believe. However, my girls are worth it! :3nodding: They had cheaper ones but they appeared to be cheap imitations and did not come with the neck strap.

    19. Yay!

It sound like their situation is all sorted and ready for them to begin their adventures.

      Teddy

    20. Oh well done on finding one! And yes they are pricey (though I was lucky and got mine cheap) but they are worth every penny. And as my husband keeps reminding me "Quality remains long after the price is forgotten" :kitty1

    21. That is so true. I tend to purchase the best quality I can afford. My sister always buys the cheapest! It is a discussion we have all the time!

    22. Is there a resource anywhere that says what clothes etc. might fit the 7 years bodies? I checked on the Wiki page but it doesn't mention anything on there. I heard that some Kaye Wiggs MSD stuff can fit but I was just wondering if there was a list anywhere of things people have tried etc? Thank you in advance :) I really hope to bring a 7 years girl home soon and want to start researching some clothes for her :)

    23. Princesspetal - Teddy, Jane, and Xiaoli are more experienced with their DT dolls and helped me tremendously. For my part, I have searched on ebay and etsy for Dollstown 7 and/or Kaye Wiggs and that is how I have found my clothing. You may also try Kim Lasher as I have seen her dolls mentioned in the Dollstown & Kaye Wiggs listings. Standard MDS or 1/4 shoes fit. Do you sew? There are a number of pattern designers for this size doll.

I see that you are in the UK. Teddy and Jane are as well so they may be able to provide you local resources.

    24. I don't know of one, but regular MSD clothes usually works. It comes up a bit shorter (so avoid buying long sleeves and trousers until you're used to the size). As Coleen said, there are lots of things listed for DT7 and Kaye Wiggs girls on ebay and etsy. My girl's prettiest dresses, however, have all come from Anne on Dolly-Rocket.

      Teddy

    25. Thank you Coleen :) Yes it was Jane who told me about the Kaye Wiggs clothes. I met her at a doll meet on Sunday and it was her lovely Hazel that has made up my mind about getting one of these lovely girls hehe :) Unfortunately I can't sew (and won't be able to learn presently as I have lost the use of my right arm and hand due to illness) so I will have to rely on buying things. I have found a few things I like on Etsy but I usually prefer a more casual style and there wasn't much about for that at the moment. I will keep checking though :)

Thank you Teddy, I have heard about Anne's work so I'll have to investigate :) I was hoping that some larger MSD clothes might be suitable and I do have a few things here already so hopefully they will give me more of an idea :)

    26. Princesspetal - How wonderful to meet Jane at a doll meet and be introduced to the Dollstown girls!

Teddy - How can I find Anne at Dolly-Rocket's clothing? I did a google search and I came up with a burlesque dancer!

    27. Sorry, Dolly-Rocket is a little UK doll forum that princespetal is a member of. Anne sells at Dolly-Rocket meets and in the marketplace on that forum. I don't think she lists them anywhere else.

      Teddy

    28. Anne sometimes sells on The Resin Cafe.....the Kaye Wiggs doll forum.

And how lovely to see you here Lucy! I can't tell you how excited I am that you are going to get your own DT7 girl. The outfit that Hazel wore to your meet was made to fit a KW doll and that fits Hazel to perfection.

I bought from this shop on Etsy

Clothing, wigs and jewelry for dolls by Kaye Wiggs by Decifashion

Have you decided what head sculpt to go for yet?

    29. That's a cute outfit, Jane

January's wearing one of her Anne dresses at the moment - she changed into it for our trip to the Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park on Monday:

      Teddy

    30. January looks so pretty in her 'Anne' dress Teddy................and those Japanese Tea Gardens look luscious green too!

    31. Teddy - January looks lovely in her Anne dress. I did see her outfits listed on Resin Cafe. AnneinUK; I remember her from my SD days.

    32. I was running errands on Friday so missed the mailman's delivery of stockings from Poland for the girls. I have to go to the Post Office today to pick up my package. The camera should be delivered this week and last night I just bought an "iPad" and a clipboard and notepad online. Lilianna can take notes using technology or go old school! I think my wait period is going to outlive my budget!!

Once I finish my home projects I can start sewing for the girls. I finished painting my bedroom furniture. I need to finish the trim work in my bedroom and then I have the spare bedroom to paint. I've got some sewing projects for the house so that seems a good time to sew for the girls. I need to get my home projects completed but its hard to give up cuddling with the kitties on the couch!

    33. Good luck getting it all done so you can get onto the doll stuff!

      Teddy

    34. I ordered my girl! I am so excited! I am getting a 7 years body but with a Ganga head. They were both in stock in the resin I wanted too. Does anyone know how long in stock ones usually take to ship? Also, what wig size do I need? I looked on the Wiki and it didn't say. I'm guessing 7/8?

    35. Congratulations princesspetal! In-stock orders should ship within 1-2 weeks according to DT's site. Ganga takes an 8 wig according to DT. I have a 7-8 on my Deogi and it fits very well.

    36. Ganga's head is bigger than Deogi - so a 7-8 that is closer to 8 is fine but one that is closer to 7 won't fit.

    37. Thanks for the wig info guys :) I have some 7/8 wigs here with quite stretchy wig caps so I will try those first and if they don't fit, order a new one :)

    38. Yay! I hope you don't have too long to wait

      Teddy

    39. Oh, oh... I just received my shipping notice for Amy! I am so excited, as you can tell. :dance I just placed an order today with Nine9 Style so the girls will have several outfits. I need to see if I can commission a faceup artist now that I know she is on the way!

    40. Yaaay!

      Teddy

    41. Exciting!! Do Nine9 style clothes fit them then? I am still hunting for clothes lol.

Has anyone tried any MSD clothes from Dollmore on the 7 years body? I know they usually come up big so was hoping someone had some experience of trying them?

    42. Me, too, @coleen -- shipping notice came through yesterday! *bounce bounce bounce* Yes, time to start arranging a faceup for her . . .

    43. Yaaay!

Now dollies on the way to peoples!

      Teddy

    44. This is my first order from Nine9 style. I ordered all separates; some tulle skirts, sweaters, knit shirt, leggings & tights, and some undies. Poor Anneliese has a bare bottom! About the only thing I think that could perhaps be a problem are the skirts. One has elastic waist, one uses a snap closing, and I can't tell on the other skirt

Congratulations Cynthia ! I know you are very creative. Do you plan to do your own faceup? I have contacted AngelToast but have not yet heard back from her.

    45. I'm pretty decent with yarn, but augh, I have ZERO faceup talent -- I'm hoping Maiya has time to paint her, because I've loved the work she's done for me. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you hear from AngelToast soon!!

    46. I didn't realize you knitted. I remember the awesome corsets you made and the cute fabric yoyo clown dolls! I took a hiatus from dolls for a couple years and much has changed during that time.

Tracy Promber did my faceups and much of my clothing before she began sculpting her own dolls. Pepstar (Lisa Jameson) only does the larger dolls now. I've commissioned Samantha (Anthrogirl) a couple times but she is not taking commissions right now. It is so hard to find someone. I've had to search the Marketplace to find a faceup artist. I've seen many I liked their work but I don't want to send the doll internationally if possible. Who is Maiya?

    47. I found a couple of outfits on ebay for my incoming girl that should fit. They were for Kaye Wiggs MSD size dolls so I think they will be ok. Just need to find a wig now!

Has anyone had a girl on the new body yet? Would you advise wiring and sueding them like the old style bodies?

    48. oh, dear . . . the yoyo clowns and corsets weren't me (though my great-aunt Grace did make yoyo clowns once upon a time :sweat) -- They must have belonged to another Cynthia, though it does seem like a common name for doll-crafty people! ;)

Maiya has a thread in the Marketplace here -- that's how I found her initially.

    49. LOL! Well, the memory isn't what it used to be!

Princesspetal - Congrats on finding an outfit for your Ganga! I haven't sueded my Deogi on the new body but the rest of the "gang" could probably speak better to the subject than me.

The Canon eos camera arrived today. It is awesome. Thank you so much for the heads up Jane. The clipboard & notepad arrived, along with the "iPad." The iPad was a disappointment; just rubber. But the clipboard & notepad will suffice. I may go for the iPad that is a compact mirror as it is more realistic.

    50. As far as I'm aware ALL DT (except possibly the newer elf bodies) bodies need glue-sueding at the very least - My older and newer mini's all have wiring too, as does my 13 Year girl. My Elf girl is the only body that hasn't needed wiring or sueding yet.

      Teddy

    51. I heard back from AngelToast and I'm on the list!

I painted the trim in my bedroom yesterday. I need to paint the spare bedroom and then I can start sewing for the girls! At least I have outfits ready and I will have time to sew while Lilianna is having her faceup done.

    52. Thanks Teddy :) Hopefully she can get away with just sueding because I can manage that myself. Jane said I can send her to her to be wired if she needs it though (I can't do it myself as I only have the use of one arm at present).

    53. That must be inconvenient - I hope you recover soon.

The difference glue sueding makes is, in my opinion, quite a lot. I juat prefer both witring and sueding. I'd give the glue sueding a try and see if that works well enough for you and then take Jane up on her offer if you find you need to.

      Teddy

    54. I sueded and wired some of my SDs but that was years ago. My SDs just sit on the shelf in the curios now. I've only been into the tinies for awhile and mostly Fairyland which are great posers. My Anneliese (Deogi) is the first MSD and I haven't had the opportunity to do much with her as she only has one outfit and I traveled so much for work. Now that Lilianna (Amy) is coming and I have outfits and a story line I am sure I will be playing more.

Lilianna made it to Customs in Chicago yesterday so I am hoping she arrives Monday or Tuesday.

    55. Fingers crossed!

    56. I go away on holiday for a week (and a bit) and come back to so much news!
Congratulations all round for the news of the shipping of orders, to the buying of clothes and to the procuring of the face-up slots. What fun!

And to add my penny-worth to the discussion on wiring and glue sueding.
I glue suede and wire my MSD DT dolls on entry to the house...............but I don't have any of the newer bodies so I am only speaking of the older single jointed bodies.
Also I activity love the feel that wiring gives to a doll.
I think it all comes down to personal taste and how the individual doll feels and acts in the hand myself.

    57. I wondered why you were so quiet Jane! I hope you had a wonderful time. Did you take any of your dolls with you?

Nothing is so frustrating as a doll you can't pose properly. I have only had Anneliese posed kneeling and sitting with her knees folded to the side in the curio. Once the girls start "detecting" I may find I need to suede and/or wire.

    58. Thank you............I had a wonderful time and I did take a doll but not a DT one as I only had room for a doll that could be stuffed into a bag. And I would never do that with one of my DT girls!

    59. The dollie gods were with me! Lilianna arrived, along with the Nine9 style order! I didn't bother to unwrap her head since I am going to be sending it to AngelToast. Anneliese and Lillianna will have their official meeting after the faceup.

    60. Yay!

      Teddy
