Dollstown 13yr & 15yr Discussion - part three

Sep 9, 2013

    1. I BEG your pardon, the noise I just made irl scared my wife who thought maybe I was dying, they're WHAT? Did they post this anywhere?
I've been dreaming of a Hue since 2010, back when I was just a poor wee sprogget with no monies.

    2. It will most likely be a slight change in the face, maybe no teeth part. I correspond with Dollstown about orders I place and any questions I or others in my Facebook group have. They told me they hope to have him done sometime later this year. No preview yet, but if you follow them on Flickr as well as watch the news here you will get information and photos. I have the old Hue head but he lost his body years ago. I have had him on a AOD, but it looks weird. Maybe will find an old body that will work better.

    3. Awww dang, the teeth are a big part of what makes him so cute :c Ah well Thanks for the details, though!

      • x 1
    4. I will be sure to share any info and Flickr links once he is released.

      • x 2
    5. I love the rattan chair he is sitting in. The dinosour slippers are just so adorable.

      • x 1
    6. The chair I found last Dec in Home Goods pet section. How any animal was supposed to sit in it was beyond me. I had to make the cushions which are functional. The dino slippers I found years ago in Target's baby section. 0-3 months.

    7. Home Goods is such a fun place to shop, as they carry a varierty of unique items. Everytime I stop by there I end up buying something.

I assume the chair was designed in mind for a very small pet breed like a teacup, or maybe they intended it to be for a guinea pig. Nonetheless it's really cute.

It's good to know that that Dollstown 15 boys body can fit newborn shoes. The outfit Kyo is wearing so just precious.

      • x 1
    8. I think it was supposed to be in the kids section, which since Christmas is well over with they have closed at mine. No kid items to look through esp the stuff for AG as I have a lot of stuff from Target that works for my MSD kids esp.

    9. I've been practicing faceups and have improved a great deal. Here's Justinian (Mui) and Halcyon (Rhea) with their new faces. I'm so pleased I can do justice to their sculpts now. Justinian also got new eyes a month ago. I really love these two dolls.

    10. @aihre they both look wonderful. Love the outfits as well as the faces. Hugs to them both and you.

    11. Feeling a little embarrassed as I posted (below) this in the 17/18 yo DT thread a while back and folks were too polite to point this out, oops!
      ...

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had successfully hybrided hands on the old DT 15 boy body?
Was thinking more slender fingers would be nice :) or even jointed hands... or just different hands in different poses/gestures...

When you have them standing side by side having different hands makes the body less identical (hope that makes sense!).

My 15 boy bodies (with minimee heads) ...

And another example on what I would like to avoid
      [IMG]

      • x 3
    12. @kyukyukyu I personally have never done jointed hands on any of my dolls as much as I wanted due to color matching and funds. But if you can blush hands to match I would think it would be fine. The hands would have to just not go inside wrists due to being to small. You will notice most jointed hands have a ball, while DT hands do not just a rounded hand wrist joint. Good Luck.

    13. Good point... would need to try some hand swop/roulette first. Was hoping someone had already found some confirmed to be a good fit
      ;)

    14. An other photo of my second Elysia!

If I had understand well, new 15y boy body will be discontinued once the 16-17y will be release? That's not good news, I always wanted the 15 boy but was waiting to find a head to put on it...

      • x 5
    15. Yeah it didn't help they stopped making boy heads for the body and expected us to just use girl heads that could work. I tried Hyun and Elysia but they just didn't seem right. I miss Hue, Mui, Daisy boy and even the old J head worked.

      • x 1
    16. I will open the Dollstown casting center in January, and I will cast myself DT dolls.
So I will cast 15yr boy body ver.2015, and I will release again 15yr boy body old version after some modification.
I will release again old head. Hue and Mui for 3.8 line, Daisy boy and Estella boy and Yujin heads for 3.0 line.
If you want to release again old heads, please let me know about that.

    17. OOOoooOOOOOOO, so excited that you have plans to release the old Estella boy head, it's probably my all time favourite BJD (EVER!) and I had to sell mine a few years back due to financial worries.... so happy at the thought I can get her (always was a girl to me ). Thanks so much for keeping us all informed @AnjonghaK, you are putting a lot of minds at rest :)

    18. My dapper boy. He makes my heart sing. How does anyone not adore that forever grumpy face?

To be honest, Mui is not the easiest sculpt to photograph - he really doesn't look good in some angles and lighting. But I don't much care that some photos turn out unflattering, and you find your way around that eventually. Some dolls you just love unreasonably.

    19. I think the announcement fits best into the 13-15yr thread, so... 16year girl has just released. Here is An Jonghak's announcement thread on DoA, here's the product page on Dollstown.com.

It'd be interesting to see how this body compares to the old 15year girl in dimensions. Perhaps my old girl Syr might get a body upgrade, although the resin match will not work.

Here's Syr, my Crobidoll Lance on the 15year girl (modded with breast reduction - the 16yr body also has a small bust). The resin match is perfect (Crobi soft white to old DT/Dollshe fresh skin), and now that I've wired her single joints she poses fairly well. Maybe she doesn't need an upgrade!

Now, what about that 16year boy body that An was teasing late last year...

    20. While I love the idea that the 16 Yr will give the 17 year boy a friend who is not as tall as him like the 17 yr girl the 16 to me is once again a company looking at bigger dolls that can be hard to find clothes for as she is new and how close is she in size to other company big girls. I am getting older and my arthritis isn't getting better, how I wish they would have created a Elf boy. Or more 15 yr boy heads instead of another big body.

    21. I think smaller 1/3 girls (by that I mean 57-62cm in height) are still reasonably popular, 16year girl is a bit taller than them but I think she is the same height as the old 15year girl? Their dimensions are somewhat similar.

Unfortunately, the small 1/3 boy size (58-62cm) is very unpopular nowadays, the space is hollowing out a lot. I too have been keeping an eye out for shorter 1/3 boys (I prefer 62-65cm height), and most companies just don't focus on that size anymore, all that exists are older bodies that have been made before. That's just the trend now. On the other hand, there are more tall 1/4 dolls coming out, they tend to be mature-bodied and around 45-51cm in height. So tall 1/4s might start filling up the small 1/3 gap.

I'm personally keen to know more about the 16year boy body, if he gets released. I hope he's around 64-66cm in height -- I may have a floating head to put on it...

    22. Based on the measurements for the 16year girl, she will probably fit Volks SD16 sized clothing. The 15yr girl body was a lot thicker. I wish he still had reference measurements up for the 15. It would just make it easier to figure out how the newer girls compare.

      • x 1
    23. I might have the 15 year girl body measurements on file. Will go check.

    24. Thanks! It would be awesome if you could add them to her wiki entry!

      • x 1
    25. Turns out that is one measurement I am missing. I have email An to ask if they can recall that info. I will let you all know if I get a good reply or a reply of no recall. I have all the measurements in my book, but didn't print that info until 10 years ago, the 15 girl was stopped in 2011.

    26. I mean, I own one too. I could just not be lazy.

    28. [IMG]Introducing Izzy by Ali MacTavish-Riach, on Flickr

I hope this is the correct Dollstown thread, I'm going by the fact @aihre has posted pictures of their Rhea hybrid in here too.

This is Izzy, she's a Rhea head (purchased on the mp) on a Doll Family-H 58cm body. I've wanted a DT doll since I first joined the BJD community over 16 years ago, loved their expressive faces but thought they were kind of out of my league at that time. A couple of years ago however I was watching one of the adaptations of "Great Expectations" couldn't believe how much the actress playing young Estella looked like a DT doll. That resparked my interest, I found a Rhea head here in the marketplace and here we are.

I'm still deciding on her final look so eyes and wig may well change but I was itching to get some photos taken now that after several failed attempts I finally managed to give her a faceup I was relatively happy with. I hope you like her.

      • x 12
    29. She's stunning. Congrats on getting her.

    30. @Blodeuwedd oh my, your girl is so beautiful. I can't stop staring at her, and I think your faceup has brought out the best of the Rhea sculpt - I feel that I never really managed that with my Rhea. I don't have my girl anymore but I'll always have a soft spot for this face. She seems to be a rather obscure DT sculpt, so I'm SO glad to see another one done this beautifully. Thank you for sharing her!

Old pic of my Rhea (on Ariadoll 14year girl). Glad that she's found a home now with another Dollstown lover through the MP.

    31. @aihre thank you for saying that it means a great deal. Knowing how well loved DT sculpts are, how long they've been around and how strong their following is I worried about not doing justice to her.
I loved your girl, kept admiring photos you posted of her. She was so pretty! Wish I'd seen that FS, I'd have snapped her up too.

    32. @Blodeuwedd she's amazing! I love how moody she is

    33. @lutke thank you, I’ve noticed it seems to be a recurring theme with a lot of my dolls :XD:

    34. We took Izzy on a wee road trip with us one day last month when it was snowy and misty....unfortunately by the time we got to one of the planned spots the mist had shifted so it wasn't quite as gloomy as I'd hoped so she only got taken out once and decided half way through taking photos that she'd had enough, fell over face first into the snow and refused to have her wig on after that!

[IMG]Izzy at Boleskin by Ali MacTavish-Riach, on Flickr

I also got her new eyes, they make her stare even more intense but are a pain to position as her eyewells and eye openings are uneven, still it's part of her charm!

      • x 6
    35. So sorry about the weather and her attitude, you work so hard to make your dolls happy, but we can't control everything. Hugs and hope for better photo days ahead.

My goal is to make a couch big enough so they can all sit together.

    37. Great to see 13yr and 15yr Dollstowns getting some love!

@Blodeuwedd I just adore Izzy. She looks wonderful with pale eyes, but I agree about the unevenly bevelled eyewells. I had some trouble positioning the eyes in my Rhea when I had her, but it so happened those were hand-blown glass eyes which were themselves asymmetric. So I managed to get a well-aligned gaze ... two wrongs making a right, for once

      .
Lately I've been doing a lot of posing with my doll crew. Here's Syr and Justinian on the old, discontinued, single-jointed 15year bodies. Both are sueded, and wired with 12gauge/2mm steel. That trifecta of single jointed knees, solid heavy legs, and fat ankles allows them to free-stand in bended knee poses, something that none of my double-jointed dolls can do.

These two are such a delight to pose. They do everything I want them to do, and they don't fuss like my double-jointed gang. The steel wire is doing a lot of heavy lifting, but they are very versatile with it and look natural without fail. At one stage I considered "upgrading" them to double-jointed bodies... but nah, I think it'd end up being a downgrade that I'll regret. They'll stay forever single-jointed but I honestly don't think it's much of a disadvantage. I haven't handled any other Dollstown bodies besides these, but I really think this pair of 15year bodies are Jonghak's masterpieces in the single jointed range.

Justinian is Dollstown Mui (original ver) on the discontinued, single-jointed/3-part torso 15year boy.
Syr is Crobidoll Lance on 15year girl.

    38. @animemom gosh, I’m so sorry I never said thanks to you when I first posted a pic of Izzy…don’t know how I missed it other than the fact that usually when I check the forum it’s very late at night and I’m even more scatterbrained than usual.
As frustrating as it was that day had Izzy not thrown a strop forcing us to move on there’s a lot of beautiful moments we would have missed such as the low winter sun finally breaking through, backlighting snow and frost covered trees making everything sparkle or being at a particular spot as the sun was going down and a quirk of the light resulting in a patch of mist appearing to have a turquoise hue to it. So she actually did us a favour really.
I just love your DT family, saw their profiles before I saw this picture. The little ones are so adorable! These are the sort of photos that make people want dolls they didn’t realise they needed.

lol thanks @aihre, the dark eyes were at least a bit more forgiving as you couldn’t see the pupil so you could get away with it, these ones not so much. I’ll keep tweaking the position and hopefully get there in the end.
Loving these photos and you’re right, the poses are very natural looking. I can imagine it took a while to set them up though.

    39. These photos are amazing. I will have to do this to Kisa since she is my travel doll if I ever travel again. Thank you for the info on the wiring gauge.

    40. @Blodeuwedd I remember that Rhea has one eyewell that's not smoothly bevelled vs the other eyewell, so that eye opening looks a bit smaller than the other. It gave my girl a bit of a squinty look, but I think it adds to her character!
Thank you. It didn't take very long to get Syr and Justinian into those poses. I play a lot with my crew, these two are my oldest dolls, so I've handled them the most and am quite familiar with them. The wiring makes them not floppy anymore (quite the opposite), so when I pose these two and find their balance points, they stay put and hold quite reliably.

@animemom You're welcome. The 12gauge galvanized steel wire that I use is tough enough to be load-bearing -- the wire is now doing the poses instead of elastic tension and joints. Syr and Justinian are no longer cuddly, and require some force to push them into a pose. I used wire this tough so they can squat/bend knees like above and have a quasi-double-jointed range to their arms; I've tried thinner wire and it doesn't work as well. This kind of wiring isn't for everyone though, if you think it's too tough to handle or want the dolls to be more cuddly, 1.6mm/14gauge steel will stabilize their limbs even if it's not load-bearing enough.
I saw that Kisa is on the Elf body - 14gauge may be tough enough for her since she's smaller than the 15year bodies.

    41. Thank you that will help when she is standing alone in woods for photos. I appreciate the help.

    42. These are the new eyes I got for Izzy from Secret Art Studio. The 'hood' she is wearing is actually an arm cover for chairs, utterly useless for the sofa but the shape makes for a decent quickly thrown together hood on an SD sized doll!

    43. I scored the mom set via Facebook page and asked Monica to create the daughter outfit and ship them together. I asked for no shoes, wig or hat for the daughter, it got price down a bit more. Was my splurge for the holidays for the last 6 months.

    47. Ugghh, this 15yr pair never disappoint me. Single-jointed but still incredibly expressive. I feel ridiculously pleased (and entertained) every time I look at them.

Justinian is Dollstown Mui on 15yr boy (original ver. with 3-part torso); Syr is Crobidoll Lance hybrided on modded 15yr girl.

    48. New I repainted Justinian's faceup. He had yellowed unevenly over the years, mostly through light exposure - old DT oriental skin had very fugitive red pigments, and the most light-exposed areas like face, neck and hands faded the quickest. So one of my tasks was to colour match his face to his original skintone - I used his un-yellowed headcap as a reference.

Here's my faceup journal on my BJD blog. Justinian looks much better now, and I've fallen in love with him all over again (not that I ever fell out of love, ahah) :chibi

Justinian is DT Mui, original ver.

I first learned how to paint faceups on him, and I keep repainting him as my technique improves, so he's become a record of my progress over the years.

    49. New @aihre He looks dashing! Great work. I think the lighter color on the lips suits him better. You improved a lot, this is his best faceup.

    50. New He is fabulous as always and I admire your ability to keep him so youthful looking. He is one of my favorites on DOA.

    51. New @lutke Thanks, I overhauled Justinian's entire colour scheme and I'm much happier with it now. Definitely pleased with how his lips turned out (they're very important to his sculpt!) but I might add a touch more red to his cheeks - he needs to be the ruddy, wind-blown boy that he's always been
It helps to see how I started and how I've improved, even though I wince a bit at the earliest work, ahah. Getting better brushes and paints has definitely helped - his newest faceup was done with more suitable paints than the previous ones, and nowadays I have a better grasp of what colours work with which skintone and features.

@animemom Thank you, I love Justinian so much. He'll always be youthful... but I gotta say, he gives off major "old man" vibes every so often. It comes out the most he's with Syr (his significant other), then again they are my oldest dolls... ;)
