Dollshe Discussion - Part Thirteen

Aug 18, 2017

    1. Them details! He is extremely buccaneering. ^__^ Do you use a sewing machine? I was thinking of truly using mine to start making clothes...

    2. How stunning - and that hair with that top; all so balanced. Can't wait to get mine... *twitches*

    3. Update the range and size range...

    4. @Katushka_Nitok that's such a beautiful dress, wooow!

I'm going to receive my arsene soon after a bit more than 7 months waiting. I'm still trying to decide on the eyes for him, I know on Dollshe's website it says 16mm but they seem a bit big, has anyone tried 14mm? Do they look ok or they leave gaps on the sides?

I can't wait to have him home, he's going to be my first big boy in many many years.

    5. Gynure, My Arsen has eyes 12 mm oval

    6. I used 14mm small iris for my Arsene, with no gaps.

    7. @Katushka_Nitok Oh wow thank you!! Good to know oval fit well, I had read somewhere the internal eye holes were very round so round eyes were best to use. When I first saw your wonderful Arsene I thought he might have worn 14mm but I was not sure, so I'm surprised they're 12mm!

@SteamWitch Thank you so much for the picture! They look perfect! I think I will go for 14mm too! :)

    8. That dress is just gorgeous. Seeing beautiful creations like that make me wish just a little that I had a girl so I could put her in pretty clothes like that.

    9. Remember low dome!!!!

      • x 1
    10. @SteamWitch Woah! thank you, I didn't know!!! Do you know if this is something that happens with most Dollshe dolls? That it's better to use the low dome, I mean. Because I'm also waiting on another Dollshe doll and now I have doubts if it's best to get low dome with that one too.

    11. I have low dome in all my saints, grown bermann, bernard, orijeans and hounds with no gaps.

    12. Thank you!!! I'll get them all low dome then to make sure!!! :D

Braved the cold to take a few pictures of Uriah today. (He blends right in with the snow...) I bought him some jointed hands, but I'm not really looking forward to redoing his tattoos on them so I've been putting off the switch. He can't really hold his guitars like this, though.

Happy to see some orders coming in, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. I claimed both the event prizes I was eligible for so I doubt I'm going to see a Dollshe box for many more months. In the meantime I have my beloved Saint. :3nodding:

    14. Uriah looks wonderful. perhaps he can use bendy hands sometimes without the tatts for certain stories.

    15. Uriah is wonderful, I love his look. :love

    16. @Katushka_Nitok Another beautiful gown. Your photography is wonderful too.
@SteamWitch Perfect fit. Have you found that some eye sizes seem to vary.? I have some size 12 that work in my arsene too.

    17. @jo1961 I do find some 12mm that are more oblate than round will work so you have to choose carefully.

    18. @Gynure I actually use 9mm silicone in my arsene for a more realistic look. You can see a bad phone pic here (sorry). So yeah, Dollshe's recommendation is way off. ^^;

@Iron_Dog I agree re: sculpts with actual expressions. I like them, but there's sort of a limit for me personally. Dollshe hits that sweet spot, as does Bimong, as does Nuria over at MDR. Which would be why those are the dolls I have. XD I think for me it all comes down to: defined brow bone + versatile mouth pose = excellent for changing expressions based on angle. Anything more and you're kind of locked in.

    19. Dollshe gives the sizes of the eye well, which I have found to be accurate (I am anal enough to have an eye sizer and to use it). So, that is the size of the eye ball you need to put in it, or you will get gaping at the sides or front (unless it is silicone and can be bent into there). Size of iris is down to taste. Realistic sculpts look best with small irises, imo. Thankfully, there is now a larger range of people making small iris eyes. Didn't stop me from getting frustrated enough with it all to start making my own, though...

    20. Petiteballerine, SteamWitch, thank you both! I do think his jointed hands will be an improvement when I finally get it done. There’s just... a lot of snow here and no decent place to spray.

For those considering eye options, I made Uriah’s latest pair and it was, while a little ghetto, super easy. I had tried to commission someone for eyes but after agreeing to do it, a month later she backed out with no explanation. I was irritated to have been kept waiting for nothing, so I ran an experiment; rolled out some Fimo to size, baked it, stuck some printed irises on and coated the whole thing with clear nail polish. It was an experiment, really, but I was surprised how well it turned out. My topcoat was slightly pinkish from contamination with other colours and now he looks bloodshot (perfect for his character) and the tiny red hairs that inexplicably ended up embedded in the clay (which don’t show up in camera it seems) look like veins... -shrug- I’m pleased enough for what essentially amounts to free eyes.

The only downside is these are rather dim. (Picture edited a little.) I think if one were to flatten out the Fimo dome slightly before baking, it would allow for space to put in more clear layers in the cornea area to suck in more light.

    21. @rianne thank you!! They actually look very good and that size it's more what I had in mind. When you say 9mm you mean the iris is 9mm and the eye is something like 14-16mm?
I'm thinking I might wait until I have him in my hands and then try the eyes I have around first to get an idea of the size of iris I want.
Thank you all very much for the pictures and suggestions :) It's always difficult for me to find the eyes I'm pleased with and that fit like I had in mind :sigh

    22. Finally took a proper daylight picture of this guy all finished. :3

@Gynure Yep, these are more like 12mm eyes + 9mm iris. It's little fiddly to avoid gapping, but the squish of the silicone makes it a bit easier (he has a bit on the right here because of bad putty, not the eyes).

I tried 12mm Mako urethanes too, and though they're bigger iris-wise than I want, they work without gapping.

    23. @rianne woah thank you sooo much for the picture, I think I'm pretty sold on 9mm irises thanks to your photos. You boy is gorgeous by the way, I love his freckles <3

    24. @Gynure Thank you! And glad to help. I'm utterly obsessed with arsene, so it's even more exciting than normal to see other folks getting theirs. XD

    25. OMG what an amazing guy! Arsene is definitely a beautiful sculpt!! I have my Khan all finished as well, and thought I'd share his photo here :)

    26. Those eyes, that face up- he's amazing! love it, saving for my inspiration file ^_____^

    27. ha ha I just got the email from Dollshe with your handsome man! He's so striking; that wig is perfect!

    28. Saw him as well on Dollshe website. Congrats, @MJKKJM he is fantastic.

    29. @MJKKJM Thank you! Your Khan is a knockout himself! Can I ask where his wig is from, or did you make it?

@Noelblue that's really sweet. I always have such fun painting dollshe sculpts. :3

    30. Ehehe thanks :XD:!!

    31. @MJKKJM Thank you! I feel like my bowie is going to need a dapper wig. ^^

    32. Anyone know of any good wigs for the 18M fashion boys?

    33. @Havra - Oh my goodness he's gorgeous! :D

      @rianne - Ahhhh those eyes! :D He's super cute!

@MJKKJM - He's so handsome! I just love that purple coat, did you make it?

    34. I was just watching how she makes her wigs and 0.o wowza that is amazing (and time-consuming, and painstaking, and I don't think I'll be making wigs that way) - no wonder they look so much like real hair! So many little knots!!!

    35. Hello, I've just bought a Dollshe Saint head secondhand, and I was wondering about his measurements - everything I found on the Dollshe site seems to be for the "Grown" Saint, who a) my Saint is not and b) who is apparently bigger than my Saint. Does anyone here happen to know the neck and wig sizes for a not-Grown Saint made in 2017?

    36. Congrats with your Saint :). On which body did you get him? The necksize would be the same, the wigsize - 8 - Some 7/8 wigs fit, some smaller 8/9 fit too. When you look for clothes look for "hound" size, not EID model. Hound size is names after the oldest dollshe bodies and stands for a 70cm slim doll with long legs.

    37. I have an older Saint too! Which body did you get your guy on? Some of the older ones are harder to fit than others because they're so lanky.

    38. @Cyador @Quiet and Insane

Actually, I bought him as just a head...I bought this Mirodoll body with a 10.5cm neck for my floating head, but found out the hard way that my head's company measurements were way off, so it wouldn't fit. But I still liked the body, and I'd been admiring Saint heads for a while, so I bought one secondhand. Now I'm trying to do some research and figure out if he'll actually fit properly on this neck size...

    39. @nocchios I think the Saint head should fit on that neck? If anything the neck hole might be a little gappy? The Dollshe necks have always been rather large (makes for an awful lot of sanding when trying to hybrid another company's head onto one of their bodies... Especially awkward when you're trying to avoid the metal in there too!)

And... Oh no what have I done? Totally just bought someone else's spare SA Saint faceplate for my guy... Who already has both the SA and OE faceplates... Why? Well eye-opening plans and facial expressions. :evilplot: I'd semi had this idea in the works forever... But I stumbled across some photos directly comparing the original Old Saint headsculpt with the later post-2009 releases... And well... That gave me the extra push I needed, I'd like to try and get eyes that are similarly wide open/expressive for my guy... And I'd always intended for him to have an eyebrow-raised face too...

    40. @Vetinari Thanks! I've done some research and everything I've found suggests he'll turn out fine, but not having concrete measurements at hand made me a bit leery. (I bought this body for another head entirely, and that's how I found out that That head's company-given measurements are not correct at all, so I really want this new hybrud to work out in my favor.)

    41. My Saint head arrived a day early, and I'm totally smitten with him...

For those curious about this hybrid: the Mirodoll 66cm body is a pretty good match in terms of proportions. While there is some inevitable gapping, it's only really visible if a) the doll's not wearing a wig and b) if you're looking at him from a side-back angle. He also has fantastic head mobility on this body, so I'm calling this one a success!

    42. Gorgeous face-up on him. Love the wig, too.

    43. The faceup was done by shadowedforce on instagram, I was told! I only have a few SD-size wigs at the moment (I have some in the mail tho!), but this is definitely my favorite one on him.

    44. @nocchios I like how natural the face-up looks. I like the highlighted nature of the colour of the wig. The cut is very flattering to him, too.

I have a bunch of SD wigs (and MSD and tiny) but they're pretty much all in current use *laughs*. I got a really nice SD wig as an apology of sorts from 5Star when they went like 1.5 months beyond when they'd said they'd ship my boy (which is NOTHING compared to Dollshe *rolls eyes*). Problem is, it's a girl wig and I don't collect girls. There is no way in the world you could call it a boy wig even if you closed 1 eye and squinted *snorts*. Saraf (the 5Star boy) looked sooooo offended when I tried it on him just to see what it looked like.

    45. @Iron_Dog
Apparently I have something of a Thing for natural faceups with strong brows. I bought this wig on impulse because I liked the grayish-blond streaks and I thought it would suit a less youthful character. For my incoming wigs, I have some in natural and some in fantasy colors, so I'm really excited to see him modeling some. He's technically my first full SD, the rest of my collection besides him and an incoming boy (who was bought first, but he's been on layaway) are all 1/4 girls. They can all share wigs and clothes...but he needs his own things...

    46. @nocchios I go either for natural face-ups or way off into fantasy-style. Wu-Tyr (Orijean) is going to be getting a fantasy face-up where his base colours are going to be medium to darker shades of blue with a wave/ocean motif at his left temple. But, he's also the God of Primordial Waters so....

I have a good sized collection (all male) and so many of them require their own patterns (at least in part) because of the wide range of body sizes/types. I have some that can totally share but they're from the same company with the same body so that doesn't really count. Otherwise, it's more like this guy needs his own pants pattern because he's bootylicious. That guy needs his own shirt pattern because he's working a chest like Thor. That dude needs his own pants pattern because he's got thighs like a Russian power lifter.

Don't even get me started on shoes/boots. Most of my guys are sans footwear because it is the bane of my dolling life to shoe my guys.

    47. @Iron_Dog It's got to be tough to wrangle so many body types. My incoming lad (and my only other SD boy, at least as far as my future plans think) is barely 55cm, so he won't be able to share much with 66cm Ezra here either. I really want to get them both one pair of decent shoes, though - I don't mind making clothes, but I certainly can't make proper serious shoes yet.

    48. @nocchios It can be a bit frustrating at times, but it's also pretty cool to see all the different body types out there. What boy do you have that's 55cm? My newest love obsession are my 50cm-ish range of guys. I have....
      SD Souloid (48cm), Iple FID (49cm), Iple Creaa-J (49.5cm), Soom ID51 (51cm) x2 & SD Vito (52cm)

I can't make proper shoes (haven't tried but it seems intimidating) but I have made sandals and "bog" shoes as well as a pair of surprisingly nice boots for one of my RS boys, that, for the life of me I can't remember how I did them.

    49. @Iron_Dog He's a secondhand Geminick Ask! A small tall lad with a winning smile. It's cool to hear about so many other doll possibilities in this size range. I like for my dolls to have companions, so I definitely want some similarly sized friends in the future.

    50. @nocchios Oh! I'd seen those guys before but I'd forgotten about them. Thanks for reminding me. I think there should be a sticky somewhere on DoA for the 50cm range guys *nods*.

Guys, is there somewhere on the Dollshe site that shows a comparison of the different bodies? I'm probably missing it and it'll be dead obvious when one of you links me to said thing. There's quite a few styles and it would be nice if there was somewhere that showed all of them.

    51. @nocchios - Oh he's gorgeous! Loving the hybrid proportions too. You did quite well there. :)

    52. Congrats! He looks wonderful.
Kilian, one of my Saints, is on the Mirodoll 66, they are a great size for Saint's smaller head. Their WS is great match for pale.

    53. @Quiet and Insane @SteamWitch Thank you! I originally bought this body for another head only to find that that head was way too small despite company measurements saying otherwise, so I was really worried about this new head showing up and Still not working. Honestly though, I can't stop myself from looking at him all the time... He's just perfect.

    54. Everyone congrats with all the new dolls :)

I have a question: is there someone that has received both the Mystic body and the Mystic pose + body? And which one of those two would you recommend and why? I have a Pygmalion head coming - for which I want to order one of those two bodies... But I can not choose :)

    55. currently I have both versions in fashion - like the pose+ better because of the more natural/expressive posing. If I were to buy another full size mystic body, it'd definitely be a pose+ (or better yet, pose+ neck joint with 1 part torso, as more and more I'm wondering if the waist joint isn't contributing to the kickiness, much like my old hound bodies. though I'm sure my poor (re)stringing ability doesn't help. :P)

    56. Ooh congrats @nocchios he looks lovely! Glad to see he turned up safely and that your planned hybrid worked out nicely. Loving his face-up, it's so natural looking.

Hrmm... I'm trying to work out what eye-shape/facial expression I'm going to be aiming for with that extra SA-faceplate. I've always wanted to have my Saint with a facial expression other than neutral - but I also wanted to go for the whole gorgeous pouty Saint look too. Hopefully this way I'll be able to do both, but I fully admit I've not yet managed to get my Saint's face-up looking the way I picture him. For some reason my Saint's face-ups haven't quite worked out properly yet... Still I'm looking forward to working on him again once the extra face-plate shows up and the weather warms up again.

    57. Ooo... I LOVE how well his hair turned out! He's quite handsome!

In this look he reminds me of the "Antiquary" character in the anime "Elegant Yokai Apartment Life". :D

    58. Saint mods done along with faceup. I sold Arsene, so this Saint gets the the character Robin, a golden Kitsune. I sanded down his jawline, added teeth and opened his eyes a little. Since he is a kitsune and his ears are on top of his head now I removed his human ears because they bugged me. I really like how he came out, very shy guy.

In addition, the harmonious colors - I like the creation <3
