Dollshe Discussion - Part Nine

Aug 13, 2016

    1. I've always wondered how many BJD enthusiasts are out there that aren't on DoA. It's hard for me to get a feel of truly how big the world of this hobby is. I feel like most of us are here, but then oftentimes I also get this impression that there's a depth of BJD fans outside of DoA that I can't even begin to fathom. It seems like those of us here aren't the types to bombard Dollshe's boards, but then again, maybe a bunch of people that are on DoA aren't participating in these sorts of discussion threads. How many people out there do we share this hobby with? I wish I knew better about that sort of thing. o:

    2. This is a HUGE community for sure! There are huge groups on Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram....the list goes on... And I know that some of those people don't have DoA memberships right now. It's crazy!

I also think that newer people on the hobby are more likely to spam the boards on doll websites, because they aren't used to having to wait for product. I know people in other hobbies that are upset that their item hasn't shipped in a week  This hobby sure teaches patience!

    3. Patience yes, but:wantshipping: there is a reason for this smilie. :aheartbea

    4. There's also the number of people who don't speak English that are in the hobby and probably have there own language boards and forums and groups.

    5. Whut? I thought the casting was a separate team. Wasn't that what the last update was saying? "I've finished my sculpting bit, now it's up to the casting team". So, why does the casting team having to stop whilst Mr Kim responds to questions?

Hang on. I forgot the first rule of Dollshe Club; don't ask questions about Dollshe Club. It will drive you potty.

      • x 4
    6. Maybe they've got so many questions that the casting team has been recruited to help with translating and answering questions. XD

      • x 3
    7. They have been roped in to make tea and mop brows.

      • x 5
    8. now all I can see is a bunch of people hunched over their computers typing away while others run about mopping their sweat and passing out tea.

      • x 2
    9. We joke about it, but it's probably what's happening. >_>

      • x 1
    10. Or, the translator is busy typing away and everyone else is running around in circles, waving their hands and screaming.

      • x 11
    11. Or they have multiple translators and they're shouting at each other over the screaming mass in an effort to try to decipher the meaning of all of those posts and failing because of the screamings! :O

    12. I am now imagining the Dollshe atelier as a Monty Python sketch.

      • x 7
    13. This thread may be the only thing that gets me through work today.

      • x 1
    14. Or, how about Mr Kim and the translator are hunched over a computer answering questions, whilst the casting team surround them in a circle, solemnly humming tunes from Broadway musicals?

      • x 3
    15. Now we're veering into Volks omukae territory.

      • x 4
    16. @MadamMauMau lolol
for some reason I'm picture them sining sound of silence in A Capella....

      • x 2
    17. Or "Everything's Coming up Roses" as a Gregorian chant.

      • x 4
    18. After a relaxing weekend off, Mr. Dollshe sits down with a cup of coffee and switches on his work computer. As his inbox flashes onto the screen and the number of unread messages rapidly pings into the hundreds, we hear, so softly...

      "Hello darkness my old friend..."

      • x 6
    19. Wow. Imagining all of that is really making me realize how slim the chances of my Bernard getting here within this year are.

    20. Haunting, but probably very accurate. >_>

    21. I'm thinking more of the Three Stooges with Dollshe as Moe.

      • x 2
    22. Hi all, is anyone able to summarise what's been happening with Dollshe in the past year or so? I've gotten the gist that the sculptor has a backlog of dolls to finish and send out. Why is he behind these days? From what I remember, about 10 years ago people were getting their dolls in a timely way and it wasn't a problem.

    23. Dolls are being delivered. While Mr. Dollshe's health would slow new doll sculpting I understand; but it doesn't explain the delay in casting and delivery of dolls with molds already made. That part confuses me.
And now for something completely different: Monty Python tidbit I didn't know "The term "spam" in reference to bulk, unsolicited email (or in our case photos) is derived from the programme's 1970 "Spam" sketch. (from Wiki)
      So some spam of Thorne

    24. ^ Lovely spam. Wonderful spam.

We could do with some lightening up in here.

I do wonder if Mr Kim is able to leave the casting team to get on with it, without feeling he has to peer over their shoulders. They are big boys and girls! They've got this! Let them get on with it.

    25. Life is a bit sad for me right now, because my favorite cat (moggy, for some of you Brits out there) is slowly passing -- a (previously) lovely Maine Coon cat. I want to thank all of you for writing all of this silly stuff that has actually caused me to laugh out loud this morning! I am going to head to the sewing machine and work on a few projects that desperately need to be finished!

    26. @SteamWitch - 'Spam' is a canned meat product that's been around for generations. Like 'Kleenex' being used for any type of facial tissue, the name Spam was eventually used for any kind of canned meat. Monty P was making fun of its taste, and eventually in the age of the internet it started being used as too much of ...anything. I've never tasted Spam, but some people like it.

      8-)

    27. Ha ha, Oh I know Spam. I grew up eating a lot of it, that and chipped beef on toast, aka SOS. (showing my age now). The funny bit of the skit is the non-English speaking chap that is arrested for leaving out a third or fourth 'spam' from one of the items on the menu.
Spam tax :thumbup Jae looks jaded, which I suppose he is.
[IMG]Jae by SteamWitch BJDmama, on Flickr

    28. Spam isn't a brand generic. It is a particular brand of tinned, processed meat. I always saw the Spam Vikings as just a comment on its ubiquity for that generation. It was cheap meat and pretty popular in war and post war Britain. Spam with everything for my father's generation. It has since fallen out of favour. I am not a fan. Bleurgh.

    29. All this spam talk has me longing for a fried bologna sandwich.
Condolences on the sick kitty. May she/he enter into a peaceful rest.

    30. My WWII veteran dad hates spam because they ate so much of it during the war. I remember as a kid my mom was continually reminded by my dad to never serve it. HA! He would freak out and go on a diatribe every time just for mentioning spam. LOL!

I had a good laugh reading this thread on Dollshe too!

Dolshecraft message said there was more wear on the mold's silicon lining when casting the honey resin so that prompted the limit and higher price on extra parts for the dolls. I am thinking there might be delays in casting because the silicone liners have to be restored more often-- therefore slower casting production time. That was my take on it anyway. Maybe it's some thing else. Just a guess. I don't see why they wouldn't want to move them out the door as fast as possible to keep buyers happy.

    31. I wonder, how many of the 100 first Bermann's that have been sold.
I thought that with all the love for the first Bermann's out, he would be sold out in a day, but no.

    32. At the risk of being a clever dick...

Actually, it is still early days on the order and 100 is A LOT of dolls to sell to a relatively small community. I haven't looked in the Waiting Room to see how many on DoA have bought one (and recorded it). *Goes off*

ETA: *Comes back* Six in there. Almost impossible to judge from that how many have sold overall, though. Only a small proportion of BJD fans on here and an even smaller proportion post in the waiting rooms. At least some have sold. That's something.

    33. @Julie M so sad about your kitty. I hope he/she is not in too much pain.

For all that grief I hope he sells the 100 or close to it, otherwise what was the point?

    34. It's definitely early days. A lot of people will probably need to wait for pay to come through or something like that? Plus a single month might not be enough time for many people to save. (I have no interest, but if I did, it wouldn't be enough time for me for example)

I just watched a box opening of the L4 classic body on youtube, and the joints look amazing! (I'm not sure if I should link it since it's not my video, but I think it comes up in search easily enough!) I adore the neck joint. I was unsure of the L4 body because of the neck joint at first (it makes the pecs look extra ripped just because of the separation), but I think it looks like it's fantastic in reality.

      :wantshipping::wantshipping::wantshipping: :D

    35. There could be a counter for sold/remaining dolls on the page, so buyer would know whether they should hurry up or give up.
The short notice is really not good for the sale, at least for now. I wouldn't be able to scrap anything right now, -if- I wanted to buy and not many of us have a spare $520+ just like that.
(Eastern Europe here, even not poor people are poor if you translate their money into dollars <.< )

And now for something completely different :3
      [IMG]
Turns out, the arrival of my boy wasn't ruined by his maker's latest shenanigans.

      • x 10
    36. Dedra ... yikes! I know that $520 US translates into two months of wages in some areas of Eastern Europe.

    37. Pound Stirling is at a 30 year low too, so not the time to be buying dollies for many people, unfortunately.

    38. Ugh this! I'm very glad I put in my order when I did, before June's mess and before all the resulting messes that have been happening! I definitely couldn't consider any more.

    39. I think there are still people who are hesitant to order with the body unseen. I know I'm not keen on it.
They may get a bump up in orders when they show it. And I wouldn't be surprised if he extends the order period.

    40. well I ordered 5 and I haven't put any of mine on the list, since I'm new and I don't wanna mess up or break anything LOLOL
and I think the slow response is also because they haven't seen any real photos of the prototype, maybe they are just waiting..

    41. I jumped on the bandwagon and ordered the new bermann + SA head unseen. I own 2 OE 77 originals and we are all excited to see what their new "Brother Bermann" will come with. I went with the normal pose body as pose + I suspect it can go abit too mechanical/too buff etc. Keeping things simple for this bermann order.

    42. Oh boy, those were some funny mental images!

      @SteamWitch - Your boys are gorgeous! :D

@Dedra - Aww, he looks so peaceful. :kitty2

    43. Thank you!
Thorne has been filling up my camera the last few days.

      This one made me laugh.

    44. It only took me like a year, but I finally got around to painting my Grant! Now to make his beautiful body match...

    45. He looks great @Raesha !! Great job on the face-up :thumbup Seeing your beautiful guy makes me really long for mine, he's still on the plane on his way here and I want him to come home NOW!!!

    46. @SteamWitch - With a cool outfit like that it's no wonder he wants to show it off. :)

@Raesha - He's beautiful! :D Oh you're making me wish mine was on his way...

    47. So I got answer about by Aramis. I ordered two and half months ago. And today I was told, that still need to wait two more months, if everything goes well. So my dream to have him before Christmas is ruined. Because if ... IF i m lucky and they send him in December, He will spend few weeks at customs in because many package apre sent before Christmas. I m so sad.

    48. I have to read all of that before. :(

    49. Oh Raesha! I just love your Grant! Wonderful job on the realistic faceup!

    50. Fifth Motif sent out a notice yesterday/today about how the casting of his last batch of Venitus is delayed due to stuff going on at Dollshe. I wonder if Dollshe is prioritizing casting Mr. Cho's dolls over their own. They don't take casting orders from anyone else anymore, right? Furthermore, I wonder if the Venitus being in the equation is delaying the Dollshe delivering times.

Then again, is there any point to wondering, due to the Dollshe space-time conundrum. XD

    51. Hmm, I guess that would explain why I'm not one of the lucky ones to have had their order shipped during the most recent flurry of shipping notices!

I guess the longer it takes, the more time I have to keep adding to my customs fund. XD

    52. Still casting for Dollstown, I believe. And Cho was saying that it was degradation of the silicone moulds that was holding up his casting, so no indication that his are being prioritised. They are also taking a while to go out, but he is keeping people updated and is endlessly apologetic, bless him. If anything, seems DT is being prioritised as I am not aware of any delays on that front (someone please correct me if I am wrong).

    53. Ah, I just checked and they've told me mine will ship within this month. I'll be delighted if it happens!

In another answer though, turns out fashion size Robin and Rosa won't be ready to order until next year. That's a huge shame, but I guess it gives me time to think and save!

    54. Awww. Lucky you. I m never that lucky.

    55. It might be because I commented on one of the news posts (though I didn't ask for a shipping estimate, just said I was excited). Anyway, I'm not celebrating until that shipping notice lands in my inbox! XD

    56. That's too bad :( I wonder if the most recent batch of 18M orders will ship at the same time? I'll cross my fingers really hard, because I'm waiting on an Aramis too! I even named him "Noel" because he's a Christmas present from my mother. Ugh I hope I can get him at least in January or something..

    57. Whew, I can only imagine the wait on the 18M orders will be longer yet. I do feel really bad for those who have been waiting since the beginning of the year.
I guess all we can do is wait for him to set some concrete priorities and catch up on his emails/q&a board:wantshipping:

    58. I didnt ask about my shipping estimate. I asked how orderes are. Hoe they see it. That I know it must be many of them. And they answer with my shipping estimate. Lol.

    59. I'm sorry if this is horrifically dense of me, but I'm wondering if I missed something, or what's referred to in the New&News Post: We will provide The Line Up Dolls as a Full Package until October 30th. - DollShe craft
I went back to see which dolls are being discontinued (well, back to July anyway), but the updates seem rather chaotic and I can't quite tell what is meant. Can someone please help clarify (which dolls are discontinued, which are full package)?

    60. I think in theory everything except Khan will be "discontinued forever" after February of next year. David, Grant, King Corey, Erica, Robin &Rosa, etc etc. are all supposed to discontinue after final orders next year.

I don't think he's said whether Khan is going to be discontinued, or sold after that point yet.

The discontinuation news post was in April I believe. It's what tipped me into making my May order.
