Dollshe Discussion - Part Five

Apr 3, 2014

1. He was the very first pure body edition. I may be able to figure it out. I've restrung/tightened dolls before, I'm sure I'm just worrying over nothing. Thanks though.

2. I recommend picking up a hemostat or two if you don't have them already. I found mine with the veterinary supplies at a local farm store for $7.
Then (if the knot is in his calf) you just need to pull his foot out until you can see the knot (and maybe grab at one end of it to rotate the band so the knot is nearer the opening), clamp down on the elastic behind it, leaving yourself enough slack to retie the knot where you'd like it. If your doll is strung like mine he has three strings; one band for each leg and one for the arms running through the chest. If you can't seem to get the knot undone, I've had good luck with jamming bobby pins or needles through the knot at odd angles and wriggling it until it loosens.

3. Tightening the legs/torso ended up being pretty easy. ( and yes, I have about 5 pair of hemistats). However the arms were another matter. I tightened them as much as I could and they were still floppy. So I decided to restring them entirely. Put in the new string as tight as I could and they are still floppy! If it weren's for his double joints, I would not be able to pose his arms...I can't wire them either or it would be way hard to change poses. I don't know what to do about that.

4. Is it the shoulder joints that are floppy? I had to suede my Pure body's shoulders to keep the arms from dropping down all the time. It's the only joint on that body that has given me any trouble - they still aren't perfect because of the lack of a lock there, but it helped. As for the elbows... mine seem to stick wherever I set them just with the friction of the resin itself... if the string is too tight, it would make his arms kicky. Wire doesn't have to make them hard to pose. Maybe you can find a thickness that just offers some resistance without being a pain to move around.

Sorry, I'm just kind of shooting in the dark here. :sweat I hope you manage to get him just right.

5. Guess who got her package yesterday? :D Of course I had to open it, even though it was already dark outside (the sun sets around 4pm here in Sweden right now, and the days will be even shorter before it turns around) and my box opening pics were all a mess, even though I put in two extra lamps and used my most light sensitive camera lens. In any case, after six days in customs, my boy/s finally arrived ;___; It's the SA head and the OE head on the same body, but they're two different people (though twins). So from left to right, here's Bastien and Bartholomew ~<3

I have absolutely nothing prepared for these guys, so it will take a while to give a more proper presentation, but gosh... I don't think I'll ever be able to get a doll from any other company ever again xD Dear me, they're so lovely in every way <3

6. Oh they look so great, congratulations. I hope customs was nice to you. Those boys seem to have already melted your heart. Can't wait to see how the B brothers come out.
I may have to look for a SA saint faceplate on the MP, I think I need one too.

7. Oh, loads of congrats to you indigoparaflax! They're absolutely lovely! :D

8. I got my boys today (Bernard and Saint) and I just *nose bleeds*

Gorgeous boys indigoparaflax! And what wonderful names too.

9. Congratulations Rockin' Resin Addict! Hope to see more of your new boys.

10. I wire my boys' arms, with 18g copper wire -- gives plenty of flexibility and poseability, and helps with the traditional Dollshe "Pterodactyl Arms" issue.

(You can wire without unstringing, if the stringing isn't MEGA tight -- clamp it off with a hemostat just past one wrist, hold the arms out horizontally, and feed it through with a pair of pliers.)

Congratulations on your new boys, indigoparaflax -- and my cat, Bastian (who is currently curled up on my chest as I type), highly approves of Bastien's name ^___^

-- A <3

11. Thanks all! I'm so happy with these guys and so thankful that Dollshe gave us the opportunity to get hold of one before the discontinuation x3

Rockin' Resin Addict - Oh my, your boys are beautiful, there's some fine yin/yang contrast between them :3

Ashbet - Haha! Not only is your Bastian absolutely beautiful, but my twins are going to be pale blonde with blue eyes as well! <3

12. Congrats on all the new arrivals. Can't wait to see them all painted up. It is so fun to see how each one comes to life as a person in the hands of a loving owner.

13. Hi guys
i'm just dropping into ask you all a question! has any one from Canada ordered from Dollshe? I need to know if EMS charges custom fees. I'm ordering David Kuncci and would like to know before I put my order through! if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it!

14. New Saint spam. Kilian's eyes are reset in better sockets (no gaps, yay!) He has a specific look that I'm trying to portray. His hair is supposed to cover his shoulders like a black cape hood, but the new wig I bought had bangs and didn't fit the look. So I put the other wavy wig back on him, it is a little too large but with all that hair you can't tell.
I'll use the other one elsewhere.
But his really is a better look for the Wizard Aveen, Kilian's hero.

15. Getting to admire everyone else's pretty boys is helping me be less impatient with the wait for mine -- I ordered a Saint/SA Saint, too, but I think that Venitu may be the holdup on my order.

Bastian (who is BACK on my chest -- 3/4 of the time that I'm on the laptop, this cat is napping on me!) says that this is a brilliant homage, and he FURTHER approves, hehe! ^__^

(He's indicating this by purring, and rolling himself into a tighter and tighter ball . . . we refer to this as "cat egg.")

EMS wouldn't charge customs duties, Canadian Customs would. Any means of shipping into Canada is subject to customs, the question is whether they nab your particular package.

My advice would be to plan on setting aside money for customs fees. (Sometimes, you can avoid it by asking the sender to mark down the package -- but Customs has gotten fairly savvy about BJD packages, you can get in trouble for marking down the value, AND if anything happens to the package, you aren't covered for full value. I don't recommend it, for international shipping.)

Hope this helps!

-- A <3

16. Thankyou SteamWitch! I can't believe how talented Mr Dollshe is. :) Kilian is gorgeous! That hair looks good on him too. Very life like eyes.

Thanks indigoparaflax :3 I didn't mean for them to contrast quite so much, but it's turned out Ok I think.

I got charged £20 in customs for both heads. I'm in the UK, though.

Bernard has a face-up and even eyebrows, it's all just really pale ^_^

17. Thanks Ashbet. it does help :)
so far all my research seems to lean more towards no custom fee over custom fee. the truth is I've only ever been charged taxes/ Custom when DHL delivered my doll <.< so I was thinking maybe it's more to do with the carrier then with the country.
I've been dying to get David for months now... but Dollshe just had an event and they're rather slow with answering emails so i dont know how long I'd have to wait for him if I put in an order now. I know it doesn't pay to be impatient with Dollshe but the wait is torture!

18. Rockin'Resin Addict, indigoparaflax - Congrats!!! Your guys are awesome!

SteamWitch - I'm so glad those tools worked out for you! Was it hard to do???

Everyone - The photos are all great!!! I can't wait to learn to use a digital camera to share too!!!!!!

MaryamDN
- I can't wait for you to get a David, he is so handsome!

19. mollym, no it wasn't hard just a bit finicky, dusty work. 14mm sand, fit, sand, fit and a little bit of 12mm in the center even for low dome, worked wonders.

20. Thanks mollym :) I went ahead and put in the order for him not 2 hours ago....and not i'm in that delicate stage of guilt and excitement. he's my most expensive doll and the fall of the Canadian dollar did me no good :( but I hope he'll be worth it!!! now i have to wait and hope i wont get custom fee'd! i think that needs to be a word on it's own in the BJD hobby dictionary!

21. Hmm...
So, here's a question you guys might be able to answer for me.

I... might have a SA Orijean head hitchhiking along on my Hound's order, and he'll need a body at some point. Being such an oddball head, I'm thinking he might suit one of Doll Chateau's lanky, equally-oddball A-03 bodies. But the only DC I have over here (my Dolores-) is white resin while this fellow will be Oriental.

Does anyone happen to have both a Dollshe in Oriental and a DC in Normal Yellow? I'm curious just how far off the resin match would be...

22. MaryamDN - I know that guilt/excitement feeling! Though, dolly people are such enablers!!!! I am looking forward to finding some overtime work to over compensate for me buying myself 'presents' related to the doll hobby! lol Not because of the money, but for the guilt...... silly, I know!

Brightfires - I can't help you with that resin comparison, but I think that would look really cool! There's always blushing........ :XD:

23. haha the joys of this hobby! :P i have to be honest I haven't heard anyone feel guilty that way and compensate by working more because of the guilt. I'm an anthropologist >.< my field and research deals with every sort of human calamity you can imagine...that's my reason X__X
oh the shame -_____-'
it doesn't mean i'm not insanely excited about David though!!!:dance

24. Brightfires, my oriental Orijean is on a Doll Chateau N-P body and not a bad match at all. I've got a Dollzone N-Y (which would be same as Doll Chateau) female body and I think the N-P looks better with my Orijean head. The head's a little darker, but part of that is the faceup. Here's my hybrid:

25. Thanks for the pic, Anita!

I did wonder about the N-Pink, but thought it might be too pale... That really is pretty close, though. Certainly within "easily blush-able" range.

26. Holy crap, AnitaS, your Orijean is stunning. Wow. I think my favorite Orijean yet. What's his character?

Meanwhile, I come bearing spam of Brian:

27. :danceJust got my shipping notice. The change from "this is a distant future thing" to "I want it NOW" has just happened... :sweat The Duke shall hopefully be on his new body by the end of the week... But I suspect a little neck-modding is going to be needed

28. AnitaS - Your Orijean is so beautifully unique. I'm in such awe OuO

Pinkandyellow - Awh, I love your Brian! He looks so tender and slightly worried, or maybe just very content with things <3

Vetinari - Huzzah! :D I know that feeling all too well xD As long as they're still in process it's sort of okay of a wait, but at the moment they go from "in process" to "shipping", I'm done for xD Then I get so impatient I can almost cry. I still don't know what I'm doing in this hobby, since patience isn't my forte xD

As for my twins not much has change for the whole week(!) they've been with me. So far, they've gone from having one pair of shoes, to having one pair of shoes and one pair of glasses xD Though the eyes I've planned for them are pending as they're out of stock at Safrindoll but I've bought hair to make wigs, so things are slowly happening. Perhaps at the end of the weekend I'll have something to show you. Until then, I have a pic of Bartholomew in both a borrowed wig, borrowed shirt and borrowed eyes xD

29. Thanks! He's Uranus. He has pale blue and white Zodiac characters down his left arm. His mate is Gaia, a DC Oort who is a great match and also tattooed. The faceups are by Bjdlovem here on DoA. They sit on a shelf above my computer work area and survey the world below.

30. So, people, how are we feeling about the 16 inch fashion doll size Dollshe just announced? As an action figure collector I am usually comfortable with this size, but I am dissappointed that this is the direction he is taking. I would rather see more dolls in the 70cm scale than miniatures of the existing dolls. And where is Erica Snow? With the demise of the 18m line, I was hoping we would see more doll sculpts that would still be able to interact in the same scale as those which we are already invested.

31. I'm gonna have to go check that out!

32. The first thing I saw was the new 65cm girl. She looks good :)
And the smaller dolls look like a smaller bjd to me (these look like he made a copy on a good 3d printer???) - if they are made in resin I would be interested. Adult looking 44 cm bjd are very hard to find. But I am scared what he will ask for them.

33. I think it's a splendid idea as I've hit critical mass with big dolls. If I continue to collect, it will have to be smaller dolls. If Dollshe keeps making big dolls too, it will make everyone happy. Lots of people cannot collect the big dolls because of their size and weight or they lack available space to store them.

34. They look beautiful, just smaller scale of the big guys. Yeah, what is he going to ask for them?
I'm intrigued by the secret parts. Does this mean if they are pirated they can tell which doll was pirated and who the owner is?

35. I think the smaller line is definitely an attempt to get into the collections of those who do not have room for the bigger dolls. And they are beautiful for sure. I just started collecting the BJDs after collecting smaller dolls (action figures) for many years so I do hope he keeps making the biggons too though.

36. O.O sorry to barge in, but what are all your thoughts on the Dollshe fashion line!? the pictures are on the site now. personally! i think they're adorable...i cant wait for them to release the prices!!!
i know this conversation is already going on, so very sorry to repeat the question. but i think Therealwalter is right. and to be honest some of these fashion dolls have a ridiculous price tag compared to what they're made of and their general quality. my argument is the majority of fashion dolls currently in the market are really no better than Barbie! Dollshe's design would totally pose a competition for fashion dolls!
I would love to see BJD Fashion dolls!
i cant get over the little David!!! i just ordered the big one and i'm very smitten by the little one too XD
i really want to know the price!!!!!

37. I think they're perfection. With the big dolls, it's not so much the dolls as it is the clothes and props. I've been wishing for (and bitching about the lack of) small mature ball jointed male dolls for ages. It would be pleasant if they can wear existing fashion doll clothing, especially for the men. Makes me think about beheading the fashion dolls I have and putting them on Dollshe bodies. I stopped collecting them years ago because all most of them could do is to stand around all dressed up, getting dusty on the shelf.

38. Aw! Teeny Kuncci! Good idea. Tapping into a different market with little extra risk.

As for the clothes, why is he putting out clothes for the 18M Classic if that is to be discontinued? Didn't he say that there would be one, coherent line for the new 18M body and another for the 28Ms? Looks as though that plan might have changed. Tsk. Fickle chap. Also, of all the Dollshe bodies available, the 18M Classic is the easiest to clothe, with lots of people offering clothes that size.

39. Clothes for the 18M Classic line? Or is he referring to his 28M and 26F as classic? Still, I would love it if he's changed his mind, and brings back his 18M guys, as I love both the "old style" and the pure bodies. And they wear clothes so beautifully too.

40. Barging out of lurking to comment - I was confused by the way the discontinuation was worded since it said new 18m would be available in 1-2 years and wondered if that meant the new line would be the same size, maybe just improved jointing and new characters?

41. Sorry to just jump in here but I just saw the pictures of the new proposed line. I got my Saint during the forever long pure body event and I love him. However, 70 cm is really too big for me so he mainly sits around looking loverly. The mini size is really the size I collect most. While I could pass on mini David, I would be massively doomed if Mr. Dollshe ever took it into his head to do mini versions of his classic line of dolls! (Bows and hands over wallet)

42. bajib, your guess is as good as anyone else's; Dollshe is just unclear about everything. The site is confusing and now having some of the dolls in mini size (16 inch = 41cm) that are just small versions of the big ones, instead of dolls designed to be that size, is even more confusing, and IMO disappointing.

As for the term 'fashion doll', it's not Barbie size, because that would be 12 inch (= 31 cm). So I have no idea what these dolls will be wearing, other than home made outfits. I think there are 16 inch fashion dolls out there but that would probably only cloth the girl, not the guy.

OddMama, don't hold your breath; Dollshe's been trying to dump the entire M18 line for two years now. I doubt they'll put in any effort to make mini versions of them.

43. OMG, little David & Ausley. They're lovely. but, I'm not paying the same for a tiny as I do for the big guys. wonder if they'll be offered in honeyskin? :o
it makes me giggle to imagine David next to my Unoa B-el.
"before Christmas," "secret parts" ? Mr Kim is always mysterious.

44. There are 16" fashion dolls (such as certain OT well known companies) - however, I very much doubt clothing by those companies will fit Dollshe's new 16" pair, as their proportions are extremely realistic, and fashion dolls in general have smaller waists, and less realistic proportions. I suspect this is why Dollshe is planning on offering clothing and shoes for the new line.

I think these will most appeal to BJD collectors who would like a realistic and mature small scale doll. Fashion folks generally are fond of high fashion, and thus while the typical fashion doll can be very beautiful, they are almost secondary to the clothing line those companies offer.

Personally, I'm most interested in what sort of re-designed 18M body Dollshe will be offering in future, as that's the size / build I most admire. Wondering too which of the 18M head sculpts will be revised and put back into production - although I am also curious if he will be making some new head sculpts to go with the re-designed bodies.

45. Finding clothes for the mini David will be extremely difficult unless Dollshe plans to make them specifically for him. Most dolls that size are nowhere near that buff and muscular. It will be like trying to put Ken doll clothes on a GI Joe. Ain't going to happen. I have a lot of frustrating experience in this regard when buying 1:6 scale clothes. The super muscular guys just cannot squeeze into most of the clothes. But David looks just fine bare naked.

46. Well, I was complaining because I just sold off all my MSD size girls but still have a ton of Tonner clothing. The Wilde collection clothing might fit his female but very doubtful that the male clothing would fit. I have far too much clothing for the larger dolls now, so will not be going back to the MSD size. Besides Dollshe promised clothing and shoes for Ausley and that never happened. I love Dollshe but I now put little faith in what Dollshe "says" they will be offering or doing as the follow through has not followed through most of the time.

47. I was just doing some measuring. David at 44cm tall would be towering over my little guys. Chicline boy = under 40cm, & Matt O'Neil (blows off dust) is barely 42cm. they're not going to be sharing clothes much.

sounds as if they'll be offered in pre-order batches. makes sense. looking forward to photos & info. but, no more money in the dollie pot this year for me. (I'm going to write that 500 times in my sketchbook)

:|

48. I never thought that Dollshe would make the smaller dolls. Guess I was wrong. It sounds like that the dolls will be on the order of Binong's Shanti, Pham's Numina, Soom's Faerie, and the Sabarites. I've seen them, but never owned any. I doubt if I'll be wanting any.

Added: Cho (5th Motif) said something about his girl being the smaller size and more anime in style.

49. Has more info gone up overnight or did I just not finish reading it yesterday?

We will be supplying wigs, shoes, clothes, furniture, and accessories that fit FASHION Line. So be sure to check our accessories as well...

...We will be releasing both CLASSIC Line and FASHION Line together in our future as well.

So, this last one. Does it mean that they are just reassuring us that the Classic Line will be back, or does it mean that the Classic line will also be subjected to the shrink ray? I would love to see a teeny tiny Saint. How sweet would that be?

Also, shedload more pictures, including some with an AvantGuard (fashion) doll. Even on a stand and with high heeled feet vs DS's flat ones, she looks tiny, confirming that these will be an absolute bugger to clothe, leaving you stuck with whatever Dollshe might have to offer. I am still intrigued, though.

http://dollshecraft.com/showing-fashion-line-bjd/

Oh, and seems as though the term "classic" now refers to 70cm dolls rather than to the old Hound body and allied heads, as it used to. This is going to get confusing.

So, what do you reckon on the price? Dollshe aren't cheap, so I am thinking CLine/MNF-type pricing of around $370-$390.

50. If Dollshe is aiming to ask more than $400 for the fashion line dolls, they will find themselves in trouble. I'm sure they have felt the pinch of the recession and they are probably feeling it still. I predict it will be a while before the BJD market picks up; much later than any other leisure business. And the more expensive the dolls are, the longer it will take.

MadamMauMau, IMO, I don't think Dollshe means to include the M18 line in the term 'classic'. I think they are only looking at the 26 line. I hope both the female and the male. The fact that they made the female in mini is encouraging; I'm taking that to mean that the Amanda body at least will return in the 26F size. I I hope they will reissue the Ausley body too; it was on the market such a short time and never had time to become popular.

51. I just looked that the fashion size again. Yep...I love them. As long as there are some shoes available I will be interested. My biggest complaint about the OT fashion lines is the male dolls are either ugly or horribly sculpted or something. This would NOT be the case with the Dollshe line. Or the head and body being a different color.
So...my only concern would be shoes.

52. I'm so glad I got a chance to come back to DoA to check out this thread. I had no idea about the 1/4 dolls. They look great! I wanted to buy a 1/4 scale doll but I wanted a more mature look rather than baby faces in a lot of the other companies. I'm so excited to see the final product (it sounds like they are still tweaking the design).

53. Madammaumau, I really hope it'll be around the mid $200 line X.X to be honest. for $400 i'd be able to order a whole BJD body...or a complete BJD from some Chinese companies. I'm actually very impressed by the one I got from Impldoll <.<
but seeing as to they're half the size of the originals, half the price would certainly make sense! here's hoping!

54. So, if we are using size as a measure, at half the size of the originals (which cost $790), they would be $395, which is about what I reckoned. Dollshe just is an expensive company and I don't see these dolls being any different. Yes, as has been said, the market is different now and people don't have the sort of money they used to have to spend on luxury goods. But, people seem to still buy enough of these to keep the company ticking over. We will just have to see.

55. I'd really like to see them next to a 16" Tonner doll -- AvantGuards are pretty skinny/anemic (I have trouble fitting their stuff on ChicLines), but Tonner stuff is sometimes even too big for my Bimong Shahti, who is bigger than a CLine.

If Tiny!Ausley can wear Tonner stuff, that would be awesome -- I worry about her hips, though. And wish they had some more heads to choose from (I liked Amanda!), because I'm not really an Ausley person.

-- A <3

56. Tonners are a cm shorter than the DS Fashion line, and smaller pretty much everywhere else (bust, waist hips, shoulders). They are between DS FL and AvantGard in most measurements, so between 1-2cm out from both.

57. Oops, I think i know what I'll be using my discount on. ;) Here's hoping they get "mini David" up for sale before it expires. Has anyone started a thread in the right forum for this new line? I've been waffling on getting one of the big guys (love the aesthetic) but had no idea what I would do with one because he wouldn't quite fit in with the rest. A small format version wouldn't have to fit in anywhere. . .

58. I love this new line…glad to see him expanding into new markets. I think this is a great area for the company to tap into. There really aren't that many mature/realistic 1/4 dolls around. I know I've been clambering for mature dolls in this size for a while.

I can't wait to see the clothing, accessories and furniture they have planned. Maybe they'll do something really special here since they've used the term "fashion doll" and comparing it to Integrity toys vs. an Iple JID for example.

In any case I'll be making room for one of these little beauties but not sure my wallet has.

59. Not every 16" Tonner doll has the same measurements -- I know that Antoinette is bigger in the bust and shoulders, and there are a couple of bodies that are a little larger (found this out when buying clothes for my Shahti girls, who are busty but narrower in the ribcage/shoulders -- some things fit great, some were oversized.)

http://www.tonnerdoll.com/nu-mood-body-descriptions

http://www.tonnerdoll.com/blog/dc-stars/nu-mood-body-descriptions-tyler-dance-curvaceous-and-heroic

http://terrigoldphoto.blogspot.com/2011/06/body-size-comparison-of-tonner-dolls.html

Antoinette or DeeAnna fashions *might* fit -- they're both a little hippier/bustier than Tyler. My main concern is the hip area, since Ausley is quite a bit fuller than any other fashion dolls I've seen.

Clothing for the Emme body might fit -- Tyler has a 19.5cm bust and 18cm hips, whereas old-body Emme had a 22cm bust and 23cm hips, and new-body Emme has 21cm bust and 19cm hips.

(Above measurements found here.)

While I don't know if they're producing the Emme *line* anymore, they're still producing dolls on the Emme *body* -- I think that at least one of Cinderella's Stepsisters was on this body, and I've seen other releases using the larger-sized body for character dolls.

Until Dollshe releases measurements, we'll still be guessing -- but hopefully these will prove helpful.

If somebody does start a thread for the 16" dolls, please link it here?

And now . . . a photo of Seth (SA Hound by SDink.)

Please excuse the up-the-nose shot (I didn't take it -- this was taken at the DFW BJD group holiday party last night), but you can see the custom 14mm-with-12mm-irises eyes that Candy Kitten made for me. This isn't going to be the Raven King's final eye color (I'd bought these for my incoming Saints), but I'm definitely getting him a pair made just for him!

Even the 12mm *Dollshe* eyes gapped for him, so these are perfect -- no gaps, but an iris size that I'm happy with. I'm so pleased with how they turned out, and she was lovely to work with -- here's a link to her Etsy shop!

60. I, personally, am disappointed that DollShe is releasing a 16" doll line.

First, I'd like to see them FINISH AND SHIP the doll orders that have already been paid and that they've already promised - such as Amanda Love (they have a lousy track record with this); and second, take a look at the female's face. The detailing that I expect from DollShe simply is not there. Tonner clothing is unlikely to fit either of the two shown, so unless you are comfortable sewing for dolls, they'll sit about nude for a long time. The eyes for David at the 70 cm size are quite small - it will be interesting to see what size are required for the 16" doll line - and whether existing doll eye lines will fit into the exceptionally tiny eye wells that these two are bound to have.

DollShe is a leader in the 70cm size because of the grace and beauty of his sculpts. Why on earth would he want to jump onto the bandwagon, when so many are already making dolls in this size?

I suppose that the up side of this is that I won't be ordering anywhere near as many DollShe dolls in future, if he continues in this trend.
