Dolls You Love But Will Never Own

Feb 15, 2023

    1. I've seen plenty of 1/3 dolls that I think look beautiful but I know it wouldn't work out if I bought them. Every now and then I look at Ringdolls Comic version Hua Cheng but I can't see myself paying the price tag. I'm pretty content with looking from a far. Outside of that, I also really liked Dream of Doll Sha, but its really unlikely I'll be able to get him even second hand.

    2. I would have to say any of the Heaven officials blessing Ringdolls. I'd love to own the pair. But way out of my budget.

    3. Most dolls smaller than an SD. I think a lot of them are incredibly cute...and sometimes I've even considered it but usually end up talking myself out of it haha.
Also a lot of Angell Studio fullsets...man they're beautiful but out of my budget. I'd need to fall head over heels in order to justify it to myself.

    4. I love Dollzone X-NANA and all the ExMachina dolls by Dlace, but I think that's too elaborate for me... I would end up standing those dolls somewhere in the fullset and not doing much at all. I love deertaurs, half-spiders, pet dolls, but what I want to buy in the end is standard humans.
Also lots of 1/4 dolls... So many times I wish I could have a 1/4 sculpt in 1/3 size.

    5. Pretty much every Dream of Doll sculpt. I was obsessed with them in middle school, when I first discovered BJDs, but my taste has changed so much now. I still love seeing photos of them, especially owner photos, but I know that's absolutely not what I'm interested in anymore.

    6. Literally any Dollshe… maybe second hand one day but I sorta lost hope. Especially with all the current events.

    7. Seconding the love for ExMachina DLace. :aheartbea I *drooled* over the guy in the worst way. Then I went: Nope. Nope. and NOPE. I would break his parts in two seconds.

    8. SD sized dolls! I really love some of the SD sculpts of Peaks Woods and Fairy Land, I adore the more mature facial details. But I owned a couple of SD sized dolls when I first started in the hobby and quickly learned that even though I love the aesthetic, the SD size just doesn’t work for me.

    9. There are several full sets from Souldoll, Soom, etc. that are no longer sold that I would very much like to own. I can only dream though.

    10. I try to avoid buying dolls that are just the "regular pretty girl/boy". There are so many of them I love, but for me to TRULY buy them, they need to have something extra (non-human parts, fantasy skin, or even just very stylized features). I just know I won't vibe with them that much if I get them.

    11. Dream Valley’s recent nagas, and doll chateau Elizabeth, and Dollzone’s tarot dolls, all for the same reasons: they’re 1/4. I would kill for a spider-taur in 1/3, and a girl with a snake tail in 1/3, and I love the look of the hanged man’s wings, but they’re all waaaaay too small to look right with my collection at all.

    12. This may have been asked before, but is there a doll you have your eye on but feel like you’ll never own? Either for money, or no access or maybe the size of the doll is a problem? Those the Voice dolls are really growing on me!! But they are really big fellows. I like the look of a big doll but sometimes you hold them and go, this is a bit much resin but I have been admiring them from a distance. Is there something that catches your eye but you think you’ll never have one for some reason? Please share ❤️!

    13. oh yes it's asked there is this thread /threads/dolls-you-love-but-will-never-own.866448/ , you'll see all the wonderful intresting responces I posted there too for me is the huge dolls like lushion and spiritdoll pure and dolce that I love and love the size but the weight of resin in that size would made them hard to handle and the bane of my waist/back issues

    14. Mods can delete this one if they like. I thought that could be a fun topic. Thank you!

    15. The couple of posts from the new thread on this topic have been merged into this existing thread.

So I might as well take the opportunity of adding to it - Volks Genji. Loved him from the start, but less able to afford him from his value rising as well as mine lessening! And no matter how much I might be smitten by any new 1/3 size guys, I'm starting to be with @Agnes-Agatha about weight. The old 60cm guys are handleable, but many of the newer one are hefty bishies, indeed, and I don't know if I'm up to any more (unless for strictly eccentric exercise purposes--)

    16. Nice

    17. There are a few humanoid dolls I’ve liked quite a bit, but have managed to stand strong in only collecting quadruped dolls :)

    18. Years ago, Doll Chateau released limited edition conjoined twins. Part of me wanted to buy them, but I decided against it, and I have no plans on trying to get them secondhand. DC did have gorgeous promotional photos of the pair, so I enjoy remembering them from time to time.

    19. Anything that has a very long waiting time - I don't think I would be able to enjoy the doll proportionally to a 6+ month production time and would be worried sick the whole time. I love looking at many dolls from companies that take super long but I'm very bad at patience and not trusting enough to go over PayPal protection period.

Any fullset doll - I love looking at the gorgeous company photos but I find more joy in customisation and would probably be too scared to handle the doll otherwise or dress them into anything else. I love Volks' Junichi Nakahara ribbon one piece SWD Lorina, I sigh every time I see the Mandarake listing, but even if I could afford her, I'd feel so awkward having her.

    20. I really love Dollmore Trinity and Lusion dolls because they’re just gorgeous and huge but exactly that is the problem. I just have no space for such a big doll + they’re really expensive but my worst fear are the custom fees :...(
      maybe one day :,)

    21. Granado Dolls. I think they're gorgeous, but the realistic look doesn't suit my collection, and they're so big I don't know where I'd put one.

    22. He is so beautiful!

    23. I honestly cannot say this anymore because I just got the head of a doll I really was coveting and thought I'd never own because he costs over a grand to buy.

I don't have the papers so until I can find a head that comes with I won't display him on here. I'm careful about that out of respect for the forum and its rules.

I'm using this head as a practice head for the work I want to do and still trying to buy one used that I have no doubts about.

But almost always I find that almost no doll is 100% out of reach if I'm patient and prepared to wait and don't have a problem with used goods and making hybrids.

Only really rare dolls over like 2K do I view like that and I'd never buy that high anyway because my mental limit on what a doll is worth just does not go that high...

    24. Fairyland Puki Pongpong

Incredibly adorable, but not my style. But I still love seeing them so much!

    25. Ah, Iplehouse FID Ron, my beloved. I go to the website to look at photos of him once a week. He's just so beautiful. But I just think about having to clothe him and get wigs for his tiny lil' bean of a head and I just wilt. I hate owning hard-to-dress dolls (which of course is ALL I own... But Ron would be a special kind of nightmare since he's extra thicc and male, and there's practically no one out there making clothes for those boys).

    26. Those REAL big boys (and ladies!). I'm always ogling them at cons or in online pics, but I have very limited space-- NONE of my dolls get to be out on display right now, as everything has to get shifted around and storage/shelving is a project that keeps getting pushed back-- but even if I had a whole room just for putting dolls on display, my back would go out trying to haul one around.

    27. A Maskcat girl. I think the head sculpts are gorgeous, they have the kind of "western classic", somewhat realistic, nostalgic and wistful look that is right up my alley. The 57cm girl body looks gorgeous and I want to handle it someday. I just love looking at owner photos. Many times I've gone to look at Maskcat's lineup of girls, made my wishlist, and contemplated their faces while trying to imagine myself owning one.

I can't imagine it. The dolls are so very beautiful, but they don't speak to me or spark my imagination, or make me desperate to own one. I think I love looking at other people's Maskcat girls, but I feel quite contented not having one myself. I'm more likely to hybrid a head to their 57cm body, so maybe in future I'll still get to have some Maskcat resin in my collection.

    28. I'm also on team Dollmore Trinity.
Lumie and Eugenia are absolutely GORGEOUS, but the size and the (justified) price? :...(
It's not just that I lack the necessary space either - they look heavy. Lusion Doll is as big as I'll go, unfortunately.

    29. The sd16 Diamond head sculpt. I've seen some absolutely stunning photos of her, but she wouldn't fit in my collection at all.

    30. Human dolls, Ive found I highly prefer anthro animal dolls. I do enjoy looking at human dolls but I won't be buying more anytime soon

    31. At this point, any 1/3 dolls for me--they're just too big for me unfortunately. Some of my favorite sculpts in that scale are Custom House St. Mina, Elfdoll Rainy Soah, Merry Doll Round Fang, DiM Kassia, Delf Jun Ha, and Angell Studio Xi Shi, but I am (mostly) content to admire them from afar. <3

    32. This is probably going to end up getting me in trouble someday (i.e., I'll probably end up buying one eventually now that I'm admitting this), but any of the Super Dollfies. They're so beautiful, and I love how they pose! But I just have no idea where I'd put such a big, heavy doll in my house! The places I have are too accessible to my kiddos, and thus not a great option.

      • x 1
    33. Whale Tower Rafayeh. Easily my favorite dragon sculpt, but looks heavy and tough to restring. I'm keeping my eyes on that mini version that was teased a while back, though...

    34. Moonlit wonder Akheilos merman, absolutely gorgeous and amazing job yuexiao did. I was really tempted to buy the 138cm ver, went back and forth with it several times, nearly purchased it but in the end, I fully accepted that 138cm is too big, I wouldn't have anywhere to display it and it would be a shame to store it in the box. The 53cm ver didn't vibe with me at all, so unfortunate.

    35. I adore Doll Chateau sculpts and bodies, but I can't see myself owning one of my own! Not for any reason other than I have a very specific aesthetic for my own collection, but man I adore seeing them online and how many crazy things DC has made over the years. Truly gorgeous dolls and I bet everyone who fits them into their collection adores them!

    36. There's a certain doll by MisterMinouDoll, that I want, but it'll probably cost me 800-900$ (I'm not sure what I would have to pay with customs), just to ship a 1/6 doll. And, if I don't get along with her, I'm not sure if I'd even get a 1/3 of my money back. The price point puts me on the fence about how much I like her. (edit: I know I DO like her "But, what if I didn't?".)
And, I'm sure someone will buy her before I ever have the funds to purchase her.

    37. There’s no specific type of doll that’s off limits for me, but there are some random sculpts I really really love that I will probably never own.

Minifee Shushu is one such sculpt. I saw her at my very first meetup and became friends with the owner. I’ve loved pretty much every Shushu I’ve seen since! I have no idea what I would do with this doll though, no character ideas or anything. Sometimes I like what other people do with their dolls so much that it’s enough for me to just see what they have instead of feeling compelled to own one.

    38. i know everyone always brings up the sd mana sama doll but dang its definitely a grail

    39. Very specific even if not an uncommon "holy grail," but specifically, Dream of Doll Homme Ducan with the clothing fullset from Dream of Doll Sha would be like a total 'endgame' if it was possible.

To what I know, this company stopped making dolls years ago, and these are pretty rare to begin with, but he's really cool and reminds me exactly of the sort of thing I liked as an edgy teenager, lol. If I ever saw one, it would likely be far out of my personal range as well, I only saw a DOD for sale once on a secondhand market and the price was well in the thousands! I'm content with just looking at photos, but I'd love to see one in person one day!

    40. Maybe not a case of "would absolutely NEVER own", but Loongsoul's Black Dragon. He's stunning, but the more I look at him, the more I think he's likely to be too clunky for my liking. The tail doesn't look like it has great poseability, if any at all. I could be wrong but it seems like it more or less only has one displayable pose with how it's designed and I'm not a big fan of the wings.

If they put out a 1/4 version, I might still go for it and simply leave off his wings (and maybe design him a new tail myself), because I loooove his cute dragon feet and the rest of the design, but the 1/3 looks to be quite a beast. I don't think I want to commit the space or the money to him if I'm not going to use at least 2 of his most impressive features.

Of course if the right opportunity came along, I probably wouldn't decline, but given that Dream Valley's Velarde basically had all the features I liked and none of the ones I didn't care for, I think I can safely hold out for other companies to make something similar that will suit my preferences better.

(But I'm manifesting that 1/4 version anyway :XD:)

    41. The Soom Monthly dolls specifically Beryl and Heliot. I love them but I don’t know if I’d ever own them. I’ll continue to admire from afar.

    42. Lilycat dolls. I've had one and she was GORGEOUS, but the posing wasn't great. Maybe if I wanted to put more effort into sueding and/or restringing a few times to get it just right, but at present the desire for a doll and the willingness to work for her to pose well haven't aligned.

    43. Volks PS bisque dolls, they are gorgeous, but I don't want to buy one with someone else's name. Getting them under volks's strict rules seems even more impossible

ps. Getting a yo-tenshi version seems tempting

    44. Volks Shinsia - the doll who launched me in to this hobby but now seems lost to time. No one seems to be selling her or posting about her anymore.
My other dream doll I love with all my soul is D.Lace Ex Machina male. I love cyborg/android dolls but the sculpting and presentation of this one matches everything I've seen in my dreams. Truly this is a work of art the artist is allowing you to own. He looks very much like he is worth every cent.
But I could never justify the cost compared to other expenses in my life. I saved pictures of him to my computer. Absolutely gorgeous doll.

    45. Unoss, Volks Michele Dormitory, Volks Belldandy, Volks Chii, The GITS bjd doll... the list is long and painful.

    46. Iplehouse Chase, Dream of Doll Delphine and Kalix (grey skin specifically). Those are my "I will never be able to afford them, but gods above I would give a working organ to have". Especially since DoD is defunct now ;~;

    47. I'd say any of the huge dolls like Trinity or Conarium. I've considered getting one as my last for a time. The presence must be incredible but they're something you just sit around and display and I like dolls that are posable. I think uncle/70 is the upper limit of dolls you can still play with.

    48. Loong Soul fullsets, love the traditional Chinese aesthetic but I want to customize so I think full sets would just feel more like a display figure than a doll to me. My ultimate grail doll is Doll Chateau Xanthe but that one was discontinued in 2017

    49. Every dolls with big hips, they are gorgeous but it's impossible to find clothes for them, and you need special clothes that you can't put on reagular dolls :...(

    50. The Huajing dolls are gorgeous, but I'd have no space for that many sculpts.

    51. I saw someone else mention the merman version of Moonlit Wonder’s Akheilos and that’s my answer too. 138cm of merman is a bit extreme for me but he’s so beautiful so I’ll settle and just buy his head with the alpha body that was released a few months ago.

    52. For me it's merfolk dolls, I see so many gorgeous ones and I like mermaids so I dont know what it is but I just don't click with them enough to ever add to my own collection.

    53. I don't know if this counts, but all the custom BJDs that I've seen YouTuber Moonlight Jewel create. She makes such beautiful dolls and I wish I could have a few of them, but alas... I cannot. However, I am more than happy admiring them in her videos.

    54. Soom Amber. such a beautiful doll that i have been enamored with since i started in the hobby. but i’ve come to realize i have no idea how i would even style them lol. it’s still fulfilling to have a doll just for the sake of being beautiful, but with amber it feels like a huge undertaking! but maybe that will change and i will feel more equipped one day! (not to mention rarity/age/discontinuation)

    55. So many! The artistry and variety in this hobby is incredible, I love seeing all of it. But after buying and selling quite a few dolls of hugely varying types I was excited to have, but who I immediately knew weren't for me once they came home - I think I've established that my taste is 99% two-legged, realistic/humanoid female dolls, who can wear a pretty wig, with unique faces full of character that still have an element of cuteness, and bodies that are rounded rather than super slim or bony. I also like 1/4 and 1/3 scale better than tines (which I didn't expect - I only got into dolls recently, but I've been a 1:12 dollhouse miniature fan my whole life).

Men, pets, centaurs, sea creatures, anime inspired, super stylized, huge eyes, super mature and chiseled- not for me. Though of course I do have a handful of dolls which are somewhat an exception to this...

      • x 2
    56. Moonlight Jewel's work is incredible! So expensive, but it's nice to admire from afar, still.

    57. Hot/pretty male dolls. Out of 70 dolls I have 3 boys. No matter how much I LOVE the hot resin dudes they just don't stick unless they super specific.

I'm not into realistic dolls, but I like to see other owner's photos of them.

      • x 2
    58. Fairyland's Liria, the doll that got me interested in collecting in the first place. Imagine my heartbreak when I realized she was such a limited sculpt!!

      • x 2
    59. New The 1/3 scale and larger size dolls. I have seen so many gorgeous ones, and I admire everyone's photos but they're not going to join my collection. I don't have a good space that I can dedicate to storing and/or displaying them properly. Plus, I'd rather focus on the MSD size which I think will work better for me.
