Dolls You Love But Will Never Own

Feb 15, 2023

    1. I’ve fallen head over heels for so many sculpts time and time again, and I have a hard time convincing myself not to buy them. I keep coming back to r.deans sculpts and how absolutely gorgeous they are. I have so many ideas for face ups and character concepts for their sculpts, it’s really tempting to buy one. However I know I would not like a doll that size, and I know I would not like a bigger, muscly male doll, even if I love to look at them. What dolls do you keep coming back to even though you know you wouldn’t realistically want to own one?

    2. I love the dollshe limited100 david doll that looks like a mountain of muscles, he woukd be so perfect for a character i wanna shell... But its very expensive and i dont wanna have the dollshe experience

    3. All tiny-sized pet dolls and anthros. Lethal, bite-sized resin: so much cheaper than the 1/3 dolls I usually buy, and unbearably cute! So easy to amass a horde of tiny pets! But tiny dolls are not for me: I can sense that I'll either get bored with their lack of versatility (human dolls are much more engaging), or frustrated by their size, and end up selling them all. So, as much as I'd love to have Elfdoll Catsy, Dream Valley Foxy and Moon, Aileendoll Lapis, and many more by Dollzone and other solo artists... I've permanently banned myself from ever getting pet dolls.

    4. Most Fairyland dolls. I adore them, but I dislike the style of lower eyelashes on their face-ups and don't want to deal with custom faceup shenanigans either. I also don't like sculpts with eyes smaller than 16mm usually, or under 18mm for 1/3s... Those centaurs though.. :chibi

    5. Every time this topic comes up, my answer is always Iplehouse Kamau! That doll is sooo gorgeous, I love everything about him...except his size. He's huge, and I don't collect dolls over 65cm. He's...72, I think? And I don't think he'd look good on a smaller body. So as it stands, I'll just drool over everybody else's gorgeous Kamaus!

    6. Dollchateau Xaviera. I will probably try and purchase just the head at some point, but the whole doll is such a work of art. I just know that the large torso section and lots of spindly legs would be difficult to actually do anything with, besides posing her nicely on a shelf. I can't imagine she's easy to stand up. I love to dress, pose, and take my dolls out for photos, and she just doesn't seem like a good fit for those activities. I'm also unsure whether I'd keep her nude or try and draft up some sort or clothing while trying not to cover too much of her sculpting...

      • x 3
    7. Bust stands. Sigh, so many gorgeous bust stands! But I know I won't really get attached because they don't really suit my needs. I love playing with and dressing up my dolls, and busts seem... more inclined to sit pretty on a shelf in all their naked, partially disembodied glory.

Same for dolls with extensive fantasy parts or monster dolls and the like - I adore them, but they just stump me when it comes to clothes. Either I don't want to cover their details up, or I don't want to figure out how to tailor to their unique bodies when I'm such a novice sewist, LOL.

    8. I own him. And god is he beautiful. I did the Dollshe experience and doubt I will do it again. But man, he is worth every penny. I got the 72cm version.

      • x 3
    9. A Black Cherry Xiao Yu. She a head only, made for and SD size 52-55cm doll.
Every time I see her, no matter the face up, I think wow, she's so gorgeous.... I've done this for 3 years now, but have never hit the Go button.... I don't even know why ‍♀️

    10. Don't tempt me! :eusa_pray
Also im glad you got him and that you love him!

    11. Two dolls have continuously tempted me despite not planning to ever own them: Angell Studio Biyao and Crobidoll Yeon-ha. Biyao has such a cute and sweet face, and Yeon-ha is really pretty and probably my favorite version of Yeon-ho so far. Biyao also had a limited ordering period which I didn't miss so much as let pass by... Ultimately, I decided to never own either because they're 1/3 size and I just don't do well with dolls that big! I already have a couple 1/3 size dolls that I feel bad about not engaging with much...

In the end, I'm happy just to get to look at pictures of those two dolls even if I'll never own them myself. :XD:

    12. Most of the SOOM Super Gem fantasy boys. I think they're gorgeous, but I don't like bigger dolls.

      • x 1
    13. There's a specific Fairyland F60 event head that I have had four times now (never the same exact one, different one each time) and have never kept the head for long before I sold or traded it. So I guess that one.

      • x 3
    14. Bar from The Voice. He is BEAUTIFUL & his sculpt has so much personality, but he is gigantic and expensive. 74cm of an extremely muscular doll is too big for me, but wow was it tempting to put him on layaway or something during the recent preorder.

      • x 3
    15. I really adore the really large dolls, but I would never have room for them! Dollmore Trinity like dolls, or the Royal Senior Delf dolls, or the AOD 90cm dolls... They just literally would have nowhere to sit in the house.

      • x 4
    16. I love those big 70+ dolls from Loongsoul and Ringdoll, but they're just too big for me. My partner has some and just carrying those dolls for them is too much... which is a shame because smaller sizes never get such beautiful outfits...

      • x 4
    17. Literally every 1/3 male sculpt from Iplehouse. They’re drop dead gorgeous, but I know for a fact that I’d never figure out how to display such a large doll. 1/3 scale is stunning and I love the possibilities for detail at that size, but I fear any doll that large would just live in its box in the closet forever.

    18. I started the hobby back when you could buy the CP Delf sculpts from Luts, but didn't find them interesting at the time (nor could I afford SDs). Flash forward to now where I think they are super cute, but I don't think I could afford the secondhand prices, lmao.

I also think YoSDs are super cute, but I don't think I could ever own one, not just because I'd have to start buying clothes for a new size (which I'm already doing) but because I think I wouldn't bond with them and lose interest.

      • x 1
    19. The big Luts guys (Abadon etc.) look great in every photo I've seen but I've just never had plans that would have fit their sculpts. Maybe one day!

    20. Ringdoll's Dracula 2.0 has been on my mind since he came out end of last year. But at 77cm he is half my height and I have nowhere to put him. I love everything about him; his face, his pointed ears, his outfit and hair are absolutely wonderful and I really want a full-set doll at some point. I want to save up for him, but in the back of my mind I know he's huge and going to be a pain to do anything with except just display, which is why I only buy 45cm dolls. He just happens to be so close to my aesthetic that I may very possibly loose my mind and buy him.

I feel this on a spiritual level. I see so many gorgeous outfits but they're all for 70+ dolls!

    21. Doll Chateau Cecile. With that sculpt being discontinued recently, I had to make up my mind sooner than I thought I'd have to. As much as I love that sculpt, I just don't think I could own a Doll Chateau doll. I'd be too afraid of breaking some spindly part that I'd never touch it!
Otherwise, vinyl bjds in general. I've flip-flopped my opinion of them over the years, but ultimately more than anything, I don't think I could put up with the unique issues that vinyl brings to the table. I much prefer solid, reliable resin.

      • x 5
    22. This is me exactly. I absolutely love the anime look of the Volks Dollfie Dreams and the Smart Dolls, but I just don’t want to deal with vinyl. I’m so in love with my nice sturdy resin!;)

      • x 6
    23. If you’re willing to make the neck hole larger and find a washer for the S-hook you can get the best of both worlds with a hybrid! Mika here is a vinyl Dollce head on a SD10 body.

      • x 3
    24. I love other people’s anime-style dolls and enjoy the aesthetic but don’t think I would own one myself.

    25. Honestly had to put some thought into how I'd answer this. And then, BAM! it hit me last night before falling asleep last night.

A beauty in resin form with joints that captivates my fascination, but not enough to compel me to lay down funds to make the purchase? Those 30-32cm Granado boys. Abel in particular has such a handsome face, and Ninth was first of the line that caught my eye. Why I will enjoy them from afar? That scale is too small for my tastes, and also too reminiscent of action figures in appearance/scale. I got back into bjds due to how different they were in size and appearance from other popular dolls/figures that are out there on the market, so that factor would likely lead me not to enjoy them in-person near as much as I do in pictures.

This other one is kind of nebulous, as—if given the opportunity to acquire one under the right circumstances—I would indeed be happy to get them. This would be Batchix's Dark Elf. I fell in love with his facial features oh so many years ago, but never got the opportunity to acquire one when they were still available. I'm not sure if Batchix still makes bjds, but their dolls do tend to be kind of rare on the secondhand market. So, due to this factor....I'll likely only be able to enjoy them from afar.

    26. For me pretty much anything that demands body blushing to look its best so that includes almost all anthro, animal, mechanical, demonic, or just plain weird dolls no matter how wonderful they look. The reason is that my hands sweat a lot which in turn would cause damage to the blushing.

I also echo the impracticality of housing the really big dolls for me. I just admire everyone else’s instead.

      • x 2
    27. Any USD~MSD-sized dolls. They look cute and small, a nice size for a travel buddy. But I can't seem to get attached to small-sized dolls for some reason. They are too tiny to grab(?). I love the big dolls ranging from 75cm~80cm despite their weight and price.:wiggle

      • x 3
    28. Anything above MSD-sized dolls. I don't have the space for them and I'm not comfortable while holding them or posing them, so they're definitely not for me. Despite that, I like to look at them because they're usually more mature than smaller dolls.

      • x 3
    29. Cecile is on my 'what's stopping me? List' , too. She's ethereal. Also Twinkle... They're both so different to my current collection, I wonder if they'd fit in with the crew.... :)

      • x 1
    30. Probably an Obitsu Otohime... They're 80cm child proportioned dolls. I have no clue where I'd put one!

      • x 1
    31. Doll Chateau Christina. Not only is she discontinued, but I don't want an SD right now, SD are just too big for me! Still, I fell in love with her and she is one of my favorite sculpts.

      • x 3
    32. Soom Idealian75 Hades Allegro.
He’s the spitting image of an OC I’m super fond of, but I’ve learned SDs are just a bit too large for me. :sweat

      • x 1
    33. The first BJD I fell in love with I will never own unfortunately, that’s Volks Suigintou. She is what got me into the hobby. I love the anime/manga and I found her by chance, but she was so expensive I couldn’t get her back then. And now, I think she’s probably tripled in price. She will always be my elusive, impossible, forever grail.

    34. Mirage doll's lion apu.. he was sold out :( but I just checked and they're taking pre orders for him again(!) just not his full set :pout:

      • x 1
    35. More of a "will never own again" but for me it's big Iplehouse girls. I've bought and ended up selling 3 over the years (2 SID, one EID). They are beautiful, and I loved them and they were perfect for their characters but they are just too big and bulky for me in person. I had a grey Luna, a light brown Rexy, and a light brown Yur.

I think more generally anything over 1/4 size, but those girls are the ones I really miss. I know why I didn't keep them, but they were really lovely!!

I do still have one 1/3 scale doll, but his character is one of the most important to me and it also helps that he has near zero resale value (lol) since his body has been modified so much and his head wasn't a popular sculpt.

      • x 2
    36. Dollstown bodies, specifically their 18y bodies. I adore the way they look, but I've tried time and again to get into SDs and they are just too heavy and unwieldly for me to easily pose or do anything with. So I have accepted these are just dolls I enjoy more through owner pictures lol

      • x 2
    37. This is what I fear would happen to me. I absolutely love some of the Impldoll girls, especially Eudora and Darlene, but I just can't picture what I'd do with a 65cm doll. I have one 70cm Ringdoll boy, and he just kinda sits there, but I can't bring myself to sell him.

      • x 1
    38. Fell madly in love with Dollmore's Trinity Doll Small Orgel Eugenia ( small being a total joke here as this 'little' darling is massive ... standing at 110 cm tall). Her outfit is just to die for the most beautifully perfect costume and dashing tipped hat. Trouble is for all that height the price is that of a small car! I cry in my sleep about this!!!!!

Then you have the face up and God alone knows what the postage nowadays to get her to you would cost!

      • x 1
    39. I fell in love with a idelian doll at first sight, but it would have been so much easier to buy props and to make dioramas if they have 60-65cm, so I totally get your point!

      • x 1
    40. I loved Iplehouse's EID Leon, but unfortunately I arrived too late to buy him and now the character that I wanted him to be is on another doll... :atremblin

      • x 2
    41. 1/3 size and up, i come from fashion dolls and anime figures and anything above 1/4 scale is just too big for my preferences (and space)! love the look of the big dolls, but thinking about where to put one or moving it is like ????

      • x 3
    42. Totally get it! I'm working on a diorama for them and it will take up practically half of my room. About how is to move a big doll, It's almost like holding a toddler in my arms xD
But they are really gorgeous and it's hard to give them up once you had one.

      • x 3
    43. I have told myself not to buy anymore big dolls because I have no room, but I love to carry them around. I’ll be walking around my house with one in each arm, they are my babies and I must protect them :XD:

      • x 2
    44. That big bara tiddies doll from T&D, Spy Ah Fu.:celebrate
I can never figure out how to style male dolls and I think my husband might find him disturbing. It took him long enough to warm up to the girls... I can't imagine he'd react well to the big big chungus staring him down in our bedroom, especially if I can't come up with any way to dress him

      • x 2
    45. For me, that would probably be 1/6 and below? Those tiny dolls just give me the impression of being children's toys? Not that they are, but hey just give me the vibe that they are. On top of that, most of the dolls in this size are either girls or very young boys and while I can appreciate the craftsmanship it's not something for me. Also their clothing options look like they're more for fashion dolls which is just not my thing. So I have a tendency to avoid looking at these sizes.

      • x 4
    46. Sounds like fun! I will need to work out more on the gym to walking with one of my dolls in each arm :XD:

      • x 1
    47. The Loongsoul fantasy dolls. They're too expensive for me and too big to put anywhere, but so gorgeous, so I just dream about owning them.

      • x 3

    48. I didnt even know this boi existed! Hes so AMAZING, i would LOVE to get him but omg i looked at the 72cm (i love huge dolls) and hes 2k+ TToTT!! Definitely a "if i win the lottery what doll would i get with my sack of nickles" doll!

      • x 1
    49. I feel kind of the same way. I've always admired SOOM's Idealean boys (75cm and 72cm sized), but even though I love their sculpts and their bodies, I know I won't be able to get used to their sizes. I already think regular SD sized dolls are big, I'm not sure I would be able to handle even bigger dolls. Thats why I love mature MSDs like Iplehouse F.I.D, Raccoon Doll or SartoriaJ dolls.

I also know I will definitly never be able to own my two favourite fullsets from Volks (Creamy Mami and Suigintô), but that's more of a money related matter :sweat

    50. This is how I decided to get my first SD- I was visiting a friend and she gave me her SD to hold. It felt so good. I carried it around while we made coffee and chatted. I decided in that moment I needed one! :cheer

    51. Sio2 Ragdoll, her line has been discontinued but I’ve always thought she was very beautiful and I regret missing out.

      • x 3
    52. Lillycat. I LOVE their sculpting, but hate their bodies and limited mobility.

      • x 1
    53. I’m in love with some of the 1/3 sculpts but will probably never buy any 1/3 dolls. Simply don’t have enough space in the apartment to store or display 1/3 dolls properly :sweat

      • x 1
    54. Most of the Soom dolls.
I keep going back to their website to drool at all the pretty pictures and dream of a life with all the money and all the space XD
They don't give me the same feeling as the dolls I own and the dolls on my wishlist though, so I'm gonna save my money and just stick to looking.

    55. Soul Zenith Shiva! Looks amazing and I love the arms, but way out of my price range!

      • x 1
    56. I had a Saint hybrid and regret his loss a lot but will probably never own another. Ditto my Ringdoll Frankenstein's Monster and Ringdoll Edward who were also hybrids. Iplehouse Luo, also a grail doll but way above my budget for a doll. I have a couple of minis and I'm working on a LLT Roderich head lay-a-way which was pure serendipity me finding him cheap as I could have never afforded him otherwise.

I'm just not in a position to afford very many dolls these days, particularly SD sized dolls, even hybrids. I plan on hybriding two, a boy and a girl eventually but that will be it. I can't afford to do more. Just buying Roderich's head and finding him a cheap body will likely take me a few months. Ditto the girl when her time comes. But these days Roderich is my holy grail doll. I just loved him on sight and I will eventually have him together one way or the other even if it means eating a lot of Ramen. :P

    57. I felt in love at first sight when I saw Idelian Hyperon, and he ended up being my first doll.
So I'm kind the opposite of you... I ended up not getting used to smaller dolls :XD:

      • x 1
    58. Honestly for me it has to be any centaur doll. I just don’t think I have what it takes for it like how would I even dress and style them. I honestly find myself liking the concept and pictures of em more than anything but never really thought of owning one.

      • x 2
    59. Anything larger than 1/4 scale dolls or statues. Great to look at and maybe a little envious for those that do, but I have no space for it and I like to display my collectibles uncluttered, like how a museum displays a collection. This also helps me spend less and/or lets me buy something more expensive.

      • x 2
    60. I remember the old Soom Monthly Limited dolls that were so beautiful (first releases of Sard, Beryl, Onyx, etc), but will just stick to longingly staring at them because 1. They were so expensive back then and 2. Limited edition, and were already long gone. :XD:
