Is it just me... or do some dolls just not photograph well? I have an Isao... and he's beautiful in person, I mean... stunning!... but... honestly, I'm not entirely sure what convinced me to buy him in the first place... since almost every single picture I'd seen of Isao up until then, I'd hated (perhaps it was Tokyo Boy envy XD) Anyhow, I recently had to change my Isao's faceup, and he photographs so much easier now!... so I was wondering this: What are some of the other "Trouble" molds as far as taking pictures of them goes? Which ones look so amazing in person... but always seem to be lacking something in the photograph... and how have you dealt with it... or have you? Thanks!
**pokes your sig** have we seen your bf minimay yet?? Anyway, yes. Orlando (who I did end up selling). Orlando was sooo amazing in person, but (I think it was b/c she was a tender too) the half-closed eyes made her SO hard to photograph. She really was unbelievably gorgeous. I still love sleepy eyed dolls but after what happened with Orlando, I realized I don't want another dreaming doll. I want a sleeping head, that would be fun, but SLEEPING. not dreaming.
Hrm, see, I'm starting to think that this might be part of my problem with some molds, Isao among them.. This has me thinking... ^_^
lol, minimay isn't hard to photograph, I'm just not taking many pictures of her until I've got her outfit done XD and yeah... I'm such a dope, I one day noticed that I was no longer seeing Orlando anymore, and couldn't figure out where she'd gone. I have heard of people having problems with crossed eyes in tender dolls... but I wonder, is that something that, when you're looking at them you don't see... but the eyes just look crossed in a photograph... or is that just an all the time, can't get rid of it sort of problem?
I have problems with Isao too. He just is such a pain to try to photograph really well. He seems to end up looking startled or just goofy, poor thing.^^; I haven't started taking pictures of my Danbi head yet, but I think he might be a bit tricky. >.<
I think my problem mold is Dollmore Ray. NONE of her photographs EVER do her any justice at all. And, when people actually see her in person, they are pretty amazed at what a really lovely girl this sculpt is. For whatever reason, she just doesn't photograph all that well.
Yes, I had a heck of a time with the crosseyes. And yep - they looked like that in person, too. The best I found to deal with it was using masterpiece (since they're smooshy) and doing a side glance. that really did help a LOT. Orlando really was beautiful... but there she sat, I found I was reaching for Jeremiah Blue all the time, or Shawn. I STILL love tender bee-a, there are several tender bee-as on the board that I stalk and always look at, it just seems that the sleepy eyed dolls just aren't for me.
My poor Woori is like that. Similar to your story.. I can't really figure out what led me to even buy him because his pictures don't do him justice at all. But I "risked" it and he is so adorable in person! I was very pleasantly suprised when I unboxed him. But no matter what I do I just can't capture his true look on camera. It doesn't bother me too much though. I know he's adorable and that's what matters. But I admit it does frustrate me knowing I can't ever really share what I see when I look at him.
Hmm. Before Namie arrived, I could only find one or two owners on here, and I didn't like any of the user pictures I found at -all-. From the side and looking up a little, her cheeks look way more puffy and obtrusive than they really are. She's beautiful in person-- and I think it's easier to tell now, since a LOT of people got Asha since then... maybe it was just a case of a few bad pictures, more than a difficulty to photograph... but there are some no-no angles for Asha. ^^ However, our Kyohei (AR Dana Boy) never seems to take pictures that are as cool as he looks in real life. His wig is a little too small (he needs a new one), so even though it looks fine in real life, the flash from the camera brightens up his skin and makes it look like his hair is a little small toupee. Also, straight on shots don't look good because, once again, the flash lights up his skin and eyes, and he looks really startled. Outdoors, and from above, seem to be the best way to take his picture... but hopefully we can get him a new wig so we don't have to cover up his bald spots. ^^ I think that's why he's the least photographed of our dolls... he's really gorgeous IRL, though!
Juniper is like this. Her mold is simpler than Koushirou's and it looks plain sometimes. She definatly looks best with eyelashes, but she has none at the moment because I find them so annoying.. they always bend and crimp, and it costs $6 to replace them.
Sharmin and Marin come to mind. I always thought they looked sort of bland in photographs, and I was stunned at how beautiful they are in person. Margo is very difficult to photograph, because her expression changes so much depending on the angle at which she's photographed and the way the light hits her. She can look sad, brave, noble, or downright evil, depending on how you look at her.
Shiwoo is very hard to photograph, as well. If you don't get the right angle, he looks like he has very chubby cheeks, or his nose looks like a tiny triangle. You have to photograph him a bit from above, and try to avoid full-on frontal shots of his face. Even a slight turn to the side makes a big difference. Michelle
Woori must be absolutely the cutest thing ever, because he always looks adorable in your pictures! ^__^ I'm still just amazed how different Danbi looks in real life than from his company photos. I'm still trying to figure out how to take pictures of him where he isn't all long, pointy nose. He makes Isao's and Hound's noses look tiny and round by comparison. ^^;
I don't think any doll is hard to photograph. It's just a matter of finding the right angle that works for them. It's the same with people. NO ONE photographs bad in my book (except me ) and I always tell people that when I want to take their picture!
My Happydoll Rian is like that. He is amazingly beautiful and sweet in person but I cannot for the life of me get a good picture of him! ><;;
My poor Luke (K-Doll Kian head wih 60 cm Obitsu Body) looks awful in the few photos I've taken of him but I think he looks absolutely charming in person. This is probably because my photography skills are very lacking and his face-up is rather minimalist at the moment, just a little flat color on the lips, a little pastel around the eyes and simple blonde eyebrows. I'm glad that Arkady has finally shown how handsome and expressive the Obitsu 60 cm Body with optional male chest part can be - because no one was going to be convinced by my photos. Taliesin fangirl, Eppie
lol, right, it's a matter of finding the right angle... which with some molds, is considerably harder... that was the point I was trying to make, I'm not saying any doll is unattractive, that's exactly the opposite point of this post.
I really liked Dollmore Ray from her promotion photos, but when I saw owner pictures it really turned me off of her. I wish I could see her in person now!
Niomi said "I really liked Dollmore Ray from her promotion photos, but when I saw owner pictures it really turned me off of her. I wish I could see her in person now!" She's REALLY pretty in person, prettier than the stock photos even show. I have no clue why she is so difficult to get a good, and accurate picture of.
Can you come take my picture then? Somehow the photographers always manage to make it look like I have a huge double chin (which I don't have at all...) So it's been 3 years since I allowed someone to get a shot of me.
For some reason, I dislike the way Hounds photograph... Yet despite never actually seeing one offline, I felt drawn to them. But now I'm having regrets, and wondering if I should've bought a smaller, easier to clothe doll instead, like EL. ._.;; Too late now..
It's never too late, I'm sure someone might even be willing to trade you if you really feel that Hound isn't for you. He is very large XD
Going right through this thread, from the beginning... I've never found a doll I can't photograph, but I've had them that take me a while to get right. My pet hate - my really big hate - is when you get a sleepy doll and the photographer poses the head right back so you can see the doll's eyes. It's a horrible position and few dolls can pull it off properly. Sleepy eyed dolls are beautiful because they're sleepy eyed - photograph them with their heads tilted downwards slightly and it's magical. It's also easier, in sleepy dolls to pose the eyes off to one side. If you're having a problem with your doll looking stary or boss-eyed, move them off-centre. a corner uplook is cute, for example. I always position my boys eyes upwards slgihtly, but that's just personal preference. I once saw a little piece about a guy who photographs popstars. He was talking about how they're really busy people and you only have a short time to capture them. Its not about taking lots of good photos, it's about caputuring one that feels right. Try capturing your doll in a natural pose, or looking through magazines for ideas of poses. One of my favourites is getting above the doll slightly, and having them look up at you.
*nods* Good idea to include some tips! Another thing that you often don't think about because it's almost always there... is lighting... you really need to finesse it sometimes, it can help so amazingly. My problem with Isao is that he has lots of little facets to his face, dips and rises that catch the light and I spend a lot of time adjusting light to make sure one of his little facial nuances (which interestingly, don't show up so much when you're looking at him, but love to show up when you're photographing him) isn't over-pronounced.
He's rather tall but very beautiful in person. People love Hounds, though, so I'm sure somebody would trade if you don't bond with him.
Hmm, I don't have a problem photographing my Isao. O_o Ephram always seems to photograph fairly well whenever he's on a body(Unless it's a girl body and he telepathically ruins 50 pictures!)... On his bottle he often looks goofy, but that's because it's nearly impossible to get a good angle there. My Arashi on the other hand always looks so godforsakenly STUPID in pictures. XD Seriously, Nai ALWAYS comes out looking like arse. XD Doesn't matter how I pose him, he still looks doofy. Plus right now his eyes are WAY too big, so it's like... O.o;;; I have trouble photographing my F-24. Not only is Link one of those molds you can only really appreciate in real life because it photographs poorly, he's Beauty White to boot with a really understated faceup, and the poor boy just turns to paper in photos. XD Washes out and looks incredibly flat. x.x Oddly I don't have the same problem with my other BW doll nearly as much, Red photographs pretty well, but he's also got a fairly dramatic faceup.
"I think my problem mold is Dollmore Ray. NONE of her photographs EVER do her any justice at all. And, when people actually see her in person, they are pretty amazed at what a really lovely girl this sculpt is. For whatever reason, she just doesn't photograph all that well." I SECOND THIS!!!! I never thought anything about Ray until I met PixieJunky's in person: She blew me away!!! Her lips are so wonderfully sculpted. There's just something in her face that I can't place, but when she catches your eye in real life, she really catches it!! I was awed by the delicateness of her default faceup, and the obvious care that went into it. The whole faceup looked like it had been a custom done job. Needless to say, I want to marry Nixie, and if she ever needs a place to stay, I will gladly take her. XD My CH Nyll is a bit difficult... in photographs, you lose alot of the depth in his nose, which makes it look way different than it is in real life. Like this: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/Good-Vibrations/P11-3-004.jpg It doesn't look like that AT ALL. But true, no doll is impossible to photograph. In the case of the photograph above, a simple lighting change could have fixed that but I didn't realize it till now. XD
Ghaleon is actually kinda hard to photograph. If you photo him head on, he looks dippy. X3 But if I get his head down a little, he looks all sly and sexy. A big part of it is the face up. When you're putting on your pastels, you're adding shadows that aren't there or else enhancing ones that are... depending on the photo that will make them look natural- or like the poor kid is channeling tammy fay baker. Remember, with the shape of the liner on the doll's eyes you can change their percieved eyeshape and size too... I agree with Mutehoney, I like positioning a doll's eyes slightly to the side or looking up. Especially V, he's got the biggest eyes in the family now. X3
What I'm concerned about is his weight. I've heard he's uber heavy, and I want to take him around with me... But I couldn't sell him, my mother would never let me. She'd scream at me and ask why, if I was just going to get rid of him, did I buy him in the first place? xDD Hopefully, though, he'll mesmerize me and enchant me as he has so many others and all my doubts with go awaaay~~ :'D
Actually, they didn't seem too much heavier than any other SD13 sized dolls. He weighs just about as much as my CH Nyll. ^-^
Mirs are notoriously hard to photograph sometimes... I'm spoiled by Adelais, who I can take pictures from tons of angles, where as Odette only has a precious few which are flattering. Side-shots can only be taken with her hair covering a considerable part of her cheek- Mir's cheeks are so big it can sometimes be aggrivating... >_<;
bluegirlwish: I always thought DODs would be hard to photograph!!! Sometimes I see pics of them that just turn me right off >_>;; and yet other times they're the most beautiful dolls I've ever seen. I think as far as DODs go, it's got a lot to do with the eye positioning (at least for me). When I get my Camine I'm going to tilt his eyes up just a bit. I relaly hope I do him justice ^^;
Eventhough i dont have one, Choas look seriously difficult to photograph... they always look as if one eye is looking one way and the other is looking another way? Or is that just me >.>
Yeah, I noticed that too about Choa! She's got the same eye shape as my DOD Pitts, and if I make my Pitts look straight ahead she looks like she has "Chihuahua eyes". XD So Cecilia is forever looking up or to the side. ^-^;
my Unoss I find I have more trouble taking pictures of a larger doll , but Im used to miniatures , Ive been doing it years , but the Unoss ... she is the most beautiful delicate face sculpt ...yet I cant get that in her pictures ...yet LOL , she is a toughy
The dollfie dreams, some of them are adorable in person. I mean like the cutest things ever, but i think there face photographs rounder then it is and they look flat and plasticy, i've that they are not like that in real life.
I think with DDs, it can be more of a challenge. They aren't resin so they don't photograph the same way under light like how Volks pureskin has that soft look to them. I think you can make up for the lack of that in the expression you have the arms and angle of the head convey.
I never really thought much of HappyDoll Marin from photos - she looked very plain to me...just not very striking. But then I saw Jay's Marin when I went to a meetup over the summer and she was just soooo unique and beautiful! I considered getting her for one of my Dollshe guys! She went so well with them.
I don't know from firsthand experience, but I've spent the past week or so ogling endless pictures of DoD dolls and I'm starting to think they may be tough to capture. They're so beautiful! But... in pictures, they all seem to have such short noses and a lot of space between the nose and the mouth. Maybe that's an eye of the beholder thing. U and Wi and especially Too are all really close to the look I want, but the short nose and long upper lip drive me nuts; I can't tell if it would really be that noticeable in person but it jumps out at me in photos. It's the one thing holding me back from settling on a choice for my third mini.
A part of me hopes that's the case - It'd make me feel better about my constant struggling to get good pictures of my Too. Although I'm still inclined to think that's just my photography skills ^^; Looking at my boy right now, his nose doesn't seem that short to me, and the space looks okay. His nose and lips make him appear slightly more masculine (men typically have larger gaps between the nose and mouth then women do), especially next to my Bee-a. But if it's a problem, lips can always be painted on a little higher ^^; He doesn't look as good in profile as some other dolls do though. Partly that's the wig I have him in. I think he's an absolutely beautiful doll, and the sexy little look he's giving me right now is heart-melting ^_^ But I've learned the hard way that you NEVER photograph him from below, and that I need to be careful when photographing him from the side. But he's not too bad face on, while my Bee-A looks awful face-on unless she's wearing her glasses. Actually, she photographs much better with her glasses on in my oppinion ^^; Having seen both U and Wi in real life... Wi really does have quite a short nose, and it gives him a slightly more cold face then other DoD boys. It's something that could be changed by the face-up I'm certain. The U I've seen probably isn't the best one to go on, because he's very heavily made up ^^; But I think his face appears shorter/rounder then a Too, which may be why he looks like he has a larger gap in photographs. Anyway, that's my experience ^^;
Yes! My Too is the same way!! He's so sexy, but when you take a profile shot it's like "Urk! Where did the space between your chin and your neck go?!" XD
A while back there was a flood of badly photographed sharmins *about 2004 or 2005* and they almost stopped me from buying my darling girl. But I adore her, and though half the time my pictures cant do her justice, I find that if I wash out the back round that she is on with lights/sunlight+snow/or any other thing that will get the job done...it just works better. This isent all the time mind you...I just cnat take pictures of her inside.
I agree totally. I would have gotten an alice I think if there weren't so many bad photos of her, especially the body. I was shocked when a friend of mine got a sharmin, she is so pretty and I adore her. I'm completely jealous XD But I really don't think I should get any more dolls at this point.
I think my Hugo and my nono are the hardest two to take take pictures of in this house. you have to get them in just the right angle otherwise the look funny. You also have to find just the right lighting for those two or else there faces get washed out. While my Old F-09, AR Ren, and my AR Lilica are very easy to take pictures of and look good at almost every angle.
Baby Gaara is worse. If I get to close, he is always blurry. If I get too far away, the camera is in focus, but he is so small, you can't see him. I have just resigned myself to blurry photos of him. I only have one nonblurry photo of him.
I think it takes some time, and practice, to be able to shoot some dolls. Some are a lot easier then others - I find it very easy to get good shots of my Elf El, but it's hard to get them of my Shiwoo. I also have major problems with Isao! And, I do think, some dolls look totally different in photos then they do in real life. I find it a bit frustrating sometimes how things don't come out on film how they look to my eye. Then again, it goes the other way too - sometimes you get stunning photos of something that looks good, but not that great in RL.
The Dreaming version is even worse... If you're not *very* careful how you position his head and pick the angle of your shot you end up with either an up-the-nose image or a guy who looks like he's stoned. O_o
Tender Bee-A looks like a nightmare to photograph-for every one good photograph of her, with her eye colour clear to see, theres a dozen equally competent photographs where its just a black smudge-those hooded eyes and eyelashes obscure so much! She looks like an alien...I might get my Bee-A some light-coloured eyes, in the hopes they'l actually show up in photographs!
I think that might be a big problem with all tender/dreaming dolls - they're eyes are so small, they look like black slits in their face O_o But I'll bet she's pretty damn stunning in real life - and probably easier to get front-on pictures of ^^; I've heard that having light eyes that are turned to look to the side can really help with that, but I've never seen it done in person, so I can't say.
All the front-on photo's of Tender Bee-A Ive seen are lovely, with her head tilted up or down she still looks sweet, although with head titlted down her eyesballs all but vanish. Tender Too has a weaker chin, so looks a bit off with his head titled back. However, his eyes are slightly more open than Bee-A's. Tender Zen looks a bit of a problem too, but all the photo's Ive seen of him/her have dark eyes, so maybe paler, more reflective iris' are the way to go...shame as Id like her to have dark purple eyes. Ill take some test photo's for this thread, as my DOC's have shipped )after three weeks! Prayers have indeed been heard) and see if theres anything that can be done. I have an idea that having a disc covered in gold/silver foil to reflect a little more light at the underside of her lids (they're very thick and heavy) might show up darker eyes...I shall test it and see.
Yumeko (my SD10 megu) is almost impossible to get decent photos of (hence the reason there are none posted). She's really pretty in person (even without her face-up finished) but she has tiny evil eyes in pictures. My friend has a SD10 mimi and she looks amazing in pictures though.
My camera hates my second Banji, a white-skin doll with black dress and big fluffy black hair. Carolyn
My Yuki, an adam amos...i swear to god he glows. its so hard to gte the right lighting, for instance, natural lighting-he glows like crazy flash- he is an effin night light... i usually have to use ALOT of shadowing and the sort to get him to look right...
It's all in the angles! I still take some crappy photos of Ciaran (Breakaway) that does him no justice whatsoever. -_- Certain angles make his body look really disproportionate. And his cheeks and nose too... So it's all in the angles I believe... Um, I hope no owner kills me, but at one point I really wanted a Camine but some photos taken made me cringe! I thought there was something wrong with him! But now, I see some pretty good photos of him again... Lahoo is another one... From the profile, Lahoo and Camine's photos can really get screwed up... Yet I've seen some pretty stunning photos of them too! I wonder if it's a Dream of Doll thing? Maybe you've to be more careful with them on which angles they should be photographed from...
Every camera in this world hates my girl. She's a B&G Sharon. I mean, my mom's a professional photographer and we still can't get photos of her!
i have a normal too and bee-a set my boy lovely my bee-a....not so much i haven't photographed them much but kezia's eye are always crossedd i don't know if it's the eyes, i switched them with elliot's and it did the same though it might be her hair, long bangs i dunno... i'ma keep trying cuz i lub her xp
