Dollism USA Dollism Plus US Fantasy Costume Design Panel

Jul 21, 2014

    1. Hi all!
I'm Azurielle and going to be running the Fantasy Costume design panel. I have a quick question for those of you who are attending as I am working out the details of the presentation/demonstration.

As bringing a sewing machine and actually sewing a garment at the event is not entirely feasible I'm planning on bringing 1-2 items in all stages of completion, from start to finish.

My main question is what type of garment would people be most interested in seeing? Options as of now would be a tunic, a cloak, and/or leggings as for many fantasy costumes they are all basic pieces. The demonstration pieces will likely be done in SD/Delf/60cm etc size.

Also feel free to let me know if there's any specific thing you would be interested in seeing/learning more about and I will see if it's something I am able to incorporate into the panel.

      Thanks!

    2. Honestly i'd perfer if size wise it was MSD or smaller as i do not own and do not plan on owning any SD sized dolls.

A vest is my preferred item to see done.

    3. A pirate captain's coat? Something with lapels? I do not quite understand lapels.

    4. I am planning on a cloak for certain, but cold also potentially do a tunic, depending on time constraints. The patterns will be offered to participants, via email, after the panel in the size that the person prefers, but I will likely do the demonstration in SD size just so that people can see better. And as toting a sewing machine up to NY from NC is not ideal, I will probably use a combination of pictures on powerpoint and several pieces on hand in different stages of completion.

    5. I would love to be able to sew bustiers for my girl dolls. I can imagine how the pieces fit together in my head, but drafting out the right curves is still beyond me. That might be a bit complicated to call a "basic" piece, though.

I'd be good with tunics, too. Armholes seem to be my weak point.

    6. Thank you so much for including the cloak as part of your workshop! I would love to learn to make a corset and about trimmings/how to make a pattern

    7. Basically I need to learn how to make everything!

Modern clothes are relatively easy, there's a lot of tutorials here on DoA about them, but I've not found a basic fantasy dress/tunic one yet.

And since I hand-sew, I also have to take into consideration that often us hand-sewers are left out when there's any kind of sewing class, including terms that us hand-sewers may or may not understand (like "what's a serger and what's it used for?")

So for me personally, I'll take any help in making a basic fantasy dress, tunic and underdress for us hand-sewers, not to mention capes, fantasy sleeves, bloomers/underwear, etc. :sweat

    8. Well,
I am thinking at this point I'll have the actual patterns for the tunic and the cape with examples, and the email I'll send to participants will have links and the patterns and the panel will cover things like materials, sewing techniques, where to find things like patterns and findings and so on with open questions at the end. Sound good?

    9. I'm so excited for this workshop. I can't wait to get my hands on more patterns. yay! Will you also give tips on how to alter patterns for our various sized crews?

    10. Will do my best on questions and the like. Hopefully, if I time everything right there will be lots of time for questions and the like at the end, and since I've got the email list of all the attendees, I can email everyone my list of resources, and some free patterns too. Also, since I made three demonstration pieces (all cloaks I'm afraid), I will be randomly giving them away to panel attendees. ;)

    11. That's a really neat idea! :D

    12. Also, are there any fantasy outfits/dolls of mine you would be interested in seeing? I can always try to bring something requested.

    13. Where I always fail is with lining up linings so they sit flat, and sewing in arms so that the armhole and arm match up. There always seems to be more legnth to the shoulder of the sleeve than the shirts armhole has allocated to it.

    14. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make this panel, so I was wondering if it will be recorded for those of us that will be working as dealers? I'm REALLY interested in what you have to teach!

    15. I have no idea if it'll be recorded, but I will be hanging out @ Magic Mirror studios table with Nanyalin and Elisa_Maza throughout the day, so can always stop by to talk or ask questions.
