Dollism USA Dollism Plus US Faceup Workshop - update 9/5! ~

Jul 21, 2014

1. .:♥: Hi everyone! :♥:.

I am elisa_maza, otherwise known as AngelToast Aesthetics / Toasty.
I will be one of your hosts for the Faceup Workshop at Dollism USA, on Saturday from noon to 2pm. :)

In this thread, please feel free to ask questions you might have about the class and materials, how things will go, what you need to bring;
as well as specific things you might like us to demonstrate or talk about.

News: We have reached our group fund goal! Thank you everyone for your contributions! :)

.:♥:.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
If all goes according to plan, this is roughly how we are planning for it to go:

1. Intro
2. Introducing your materials
3. Setting up your workspace
4. Paint your faceup in 4 steps (we often use more than 4 steps, but to keep the workshop streamlined we will keep it to 4. This should give you a nice faceup)
5. Q&A
If all goes well, we will be demonstrating the work via projector at the front of the class, and we will also walk around and help you guys out while you're working if you have questions. If the projector doesn't end up working, I also have a powerpoint for backup.

.:♥:.

ABOUT SPRAYING SEALANT:
Since this needs to be done outside of the building, the plan is for an assistant to gather up all the heads and spray them all outside. That way, everyone can stay in their seats and only one person wearing the correct protective gear will be handling the MSC.
The programming on the Dollism website only mentions one coat of sealant, but I personally would recommend at least three (one base coat, one after pastels, and one after paint). I will straighten this out with the programming person. ^_^

.:♥:.

LIST OF MATERIALS:
This is a comprehensive list of materials you will always need when doing a faceup. You will need to bring most of these things to the workshop - except for what we decide will be shared by the class (see below).

• Doll Head (clean and blank)
• Pastel brushes (Example)
• Paint brushes (one small (size 0 or 1) and one very small (100/0 or as close as you can get)) (Example 1: ZM; Example 2: Camlon Plata)
• Plastic paint and pastel palettes (Example One; Example Two)
• Pastels (soft, not oil, basic color set) (Examples: One; Two; Three). You don't need to bring a full rainbow of colors - just bring the colors you plan on using for your faceup. ^_^ > Here is an example of a basic set <
• Craft knife to shave pastels (Example)
• Eraser (any kind, soft or hard)
• Magic eraser (can be the generic brand)
• Acrylic paints (flat, not glossy!) (Option 1: Zoukei-Mura Option 2: Apple Barrel)
• Cup for water (can be a plastic Dixie cup)
• Gloss varnish (Option 1: Tamiya Gloss Option 2: DuraClear)
• A pair of Nitrile gloves (Like these)
• A paper mask if you are sensitive to pastel dust (Like this one)
• Sealant (Option 1: ZM Option 2: MSC)

Added 8/28: Volks has released a "makeup starter kit" that seems to be a nice collection. It seems to only include q-tips for the pastel part of the faceup - it is possible to use q-tips only if you want, I personally recommend a few brushes in varying sizes though. ^_^

.:♥:.

PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT THIS THREAD ABOUT SAFETY: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...you-need-to-know-about-respiratory-protection!

.:♥:.

SHARING MATERIALS:
We have almost everything we need! ^_^ We are now collecting funds to buy sealant for the entire class, since that's rather pricey.

Current list of shared materials:

Nitrile gloves = Generously provided by St. James
Plastic Cups = Generously provided by Ravynvelcros
MSC = 2 cans ordered via PlaJapan; Cost with shipping: $41.20 (being ordered and delivered by Armeleia)
ZM Spray = 2 cans ordered via VolksUSA; Cost with shipping: $33.74 (being ordered and delivered by Armeleia)

Group Order fund goal: $74.94 = REACHED!

Thank you so much for your contributions everyone! :)

.:♥:.

Thank you to everyone who is planning on coming to the class! We are excited to meet all of you! :)

.:♥:.

2. Well I'm really excited to go to this workshop! I still have to find a head lol but I'm sure someone I have could use a new face up.

I only have one question, about materials (sort of). I am flying in, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to bring MSC on the plane. Does anyone have any experience traveling with materials like that? I have traveled the rest of my face up stuffs, but not MSC, and it makes me a little nervous.

3. Yay! I am so glad the class size was expanded so those of us on the waiting list could get in! :)

I am planning to bring my Oasis Alejandro to paint, since he is the only floating head I've got with no plans already attached to it.

I was thinking I'd have to ship my supplies via ground transport to get ZM spray there, but it sounds like we're only doing a single coat at the end. Maybe we can just all chip in for a local can or two? That should be plenty for the class size, and it would save flying attendees a lot of trouble. I will have enough weird stuff in my checked luggage, so I don't want to add an aerosol can to the mix; that pretty much guarantees that my bag will be opened for inspection.

4. Ha right? I get stopped every time I have dolls in my carry-on, once they were checked for b*mb$. The guy was really nice about it, and apologized a lot...but still. :\ Not so fun.

I love this idea....I would be all for chipping in for communal MSC/other sealant!

5. Chipping in to share MSC seems like a great idea! :) I have added it to the first post, and will update soon.

6. I've added the list of materials to the first post! :)

7. Sorry, maybe I missed something but the main web-site is saying that this workshop is already full

8. The workshop is indeed full. This thread is for those attending the class to ask questions and prepare, much like the threads for the Photo and Sewing workshops. :)

9. I too think it's a great idea to share those supplies! I am totally willing to pitch in. Just let me know how much and who to send the funds to! Woo I am super excited!

10. I can supply the nitrile gloves, since I work in a hardware store and can get them at cost. Would a size Medium be okay for everyone? I think that works out to be a size 7 glove, since the large ones that I wear are equivalent to an 8.

11. Haha I hadn't even realized originally that this would be a "hands on" kind of workshop XD! The only head I have right now unpainted is my Breakaway 2005 O_O not sure I want to use him for this! LOL I will have to figure out a head to do ^_^

12. In looking at the revised note about sealant, I'm glad to read that we'll be doing more than one coat. Should we do the base coat at home if we have the means? Who will actually be coating all of the heads? I am always curious to see people with more face-up experience actually do the coating, because even after all this time I always worry that I'm doing it wrong. I know it's probably just my climate and the finicky nature of the chemicals, but I always wonder if I could have prevented air bubbles if I just knew the trick of it.

13. I second this. I would like to see sealant being applied by an experienced artist. I've screwed up a number of blushing projects because of sealant issues and would like to learn how to do it properly!

14. That was a good question....I was planning to spray my own head before I left, but since it was asked, is this a good idea? Bad? Maybe I should wait until I find out exactly what spray we're using so they don't mix^^;

15. I hyperventilate a little every time I think about how close Dollism is!!! I get so excited! I'm so happy to have gotten into this workshop, I can hardly wait! I have soft stick pastels, but I was wondering if I could bring my PanPastels, instead? They look like this: http://www.hyatts.com/eCom/images/Q/Q56130.jpg I've been dying to try them out for face-ups, but I've been so busy, I never got a chance to use them.

A little note: I'm also going to bring a wig and eyes for whichever doll head I bring with me, just so I can see how the face-up looks :D I'm not expecting much for my first time, but it'll help me feel a little better about my attempt, lol.

16. Hmm, I'd prefer to bring my Pan Pastels too, but it kind of depends on how large a color palette we need. Regular Volks pastels take up a lot less room in the luggage!

17. I'm guessing we'd just need the colours we're intending to use? A couple natural pigments for a natural look (sepia, a pink, an orange, beige, red or pink for the lips?); natural plus a couple bright pigments for fantasy; some neutral colours to blend, perhaps? I store my Pans in a tea tin (tube with a lid) for tidy storage to keep them in order, but a little make-up pouch would probably work just as well.

18. That makes sense, and I will talk it over with Natalie and see if we can manage a demonstration. Sadly I have no idea how the building and rooms will be set up, and how feasible it will be for a group of 40 people to shuffle outside and back in. XD But hopefully we can figure out a way to demonstrate it at least once.

You can seal the head beforehand so it's ready to go for the workshop. I've mixed ZM and MSC before (well, not wet! But in separate layers) without problems. I would NOT recommend Testors. The only concern with spraying the head and then transporting it is that you might get scratches or rubs in your base coat during the trip, so just make sure to wrap it well. ^_^

I've personally never used those, but if you know for a fact that they will work, of course you are welcome to use them. ^_^ I'm curious to see the result, I'm ever on the hunt for new materials!

Yes, if it's more practical for you to only bring the colors you plan on using for your faceup, then it's perfectly fine to only bring a limited number of pastels. I will add this info to the first post as well. ^_^

19. That's awesome St. James, thank you so much! :)

20. Well that's good to know. I have only ever used MSC, but happened to have a can of ZM laying around so I figured I'd just use whichever one we were planning on using there. Since I've never so much as sprayed a ZM even a tiny bit before, I'll stick with MSC for now, but I like knowing I could use both/either if I had too!

21. I've updated the first post with progress on sharing materials! St. James and Ravynvelcros have generously offered their time to ferry gloves, cups, and sealant to the con for us. I'm just waiting to hear from them on the cost for those items. :)

22. I picked up the box of gloves. I really don't care about being reimbursed since it was only $10, so don't worry about that.

23. I dont care about the cost for the cups. They arent that expensive so Ill jist cover that myself.
As for the MSC any one who'd like to do a group order for that then we can just split the cost by how ever many people want it. If AngelToast wants to handle the finance part of it, I am fine with that and I will simply give her my shipping address to use. It is whatever is easiest for you guys!

24. I would definitely prefer to use ZM spray rather than MSC even though I'm working on a white head, but I'm happy to pay my share of whatever gets ordered. Seems like Volks would be the quicker option? But I haven't ordered from PlaJapan in years, so maybe they've improved.

Any suggestions on a color palette for pastels? My Pan Pastels are pretty bulky and somehow I doubt I'll need all of the colors, but I don't know what colors are considered essential. Burnt Umber? Red Oxide? Portrait Pink?

25. St. James and Ravynvelcros, thank you guys so much! That's super generous and nice of you! :)

I am waiting to hear back from Armeleia about the sealant, I will update once we've made a decision there.

As for a color palette, I will put a basic set together and take a photo soon to give folks an idea. :)

26. I dont have a preference to ZM or MSC so whichever one is fine.

27. Me neither. I used the ZM I had over the weekend to see how it worked and it turned out great, so I'm not worried about using one over the other. And my head might not get sprayed....I'm kind of hoping I can get my new guy off Dollmore before the workshop and just use him >.<
Maybe I should have a spare just in case I fail...

I also want to thank St. James and Ravynvelcros for providing things! Anything less that has to go in a suitcase is a huge huge help! :D

28. Is there anything special we should do to our heads prior to taking them to the workshop? Do they needed to be cleaned in any special way before the sealant will be applied? I don't have sealant so I'll just have mine sprayed there, but I figured if there's a way we should clean them first, then I would do that :)

29. I took a quick snapshot of my most-used color palette, and made a list of the basic colors you'll most likely need (see >here<). There are more colors on the palette than in the list, the picture is just for reference. ^_^ (Also, the green and blue are on a different palette, but I recommend them for a basic set). The empty-looking circles hold shimmer powders of various colors, but those are, of course, optional.

Just make sure the head is free of dirt, smudges, fingerprints etc.. I have a list of tips for cleaning dolls and heads >here<. :)

30. I have signed up for this class and am very excited about it. One quick question: where do you find brushes small enough to paint eyelashes? Could you give me a size and a website please? I have 10/0 brushes, the smallest size I have been able to find, and they are too large.

31. If you look in the first post, there are links in the list of materials. :)

32. Eeep! I guess I need to double check my Pan Pastels! I think I might be missing the blue/green range! Thanks for the photo!!

33. I noticed that the small brush you mentioned on the Volk's site is sold out and I was wondering if there's another option that would work for that one instead. I don't think I have any brushes quite that small from my collection ^_^ Thanks!

34. Ok guys, I have updated the first post with info about the ground fund! Armeleia will be ordering it this week, so please send your donations over to her. Thank you all so much for pitching in! :)

For the "very small" size I would recommend the Camlon Plata, but it is pricey. A size "0" brush from the craft store will suffice, the detail might just not be quite as fine. For the "small" size a size "0" or "1" brush from the craft store will work. ^_^

35. I am super excited about the workshop! I just sent in a donation for my RM and myself. I can't wait!!!

36. What is the cost per person for the MSC?

37. I assumed $80 divided by 40 participants - would be about $2.00 per person, but I sent in extra in case someone else doesn't send in their money.

38. Ill send mine as weell as my friends tomorrow. Thanks.

39. NannaElle beat me to it. ^_^ However I'm fairly sure that not everyone in the class is looking at this thread. I will see about maybe getting a note about it put on the website.

Awesome, thank you! ^__^

40. Just sent my sealant payment for myself and angelwings17 who is attending with me.
I also sent some extra too!

Sorry it took so long.

41. Just sent sealant payment. :) I'm so excited to attend this workshop!

42. Can't believe Dollism is so close! And I'm so excited to be in this workshop. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

43. Thank you so much to everyone who has pitched in for sealant! We're almost there! :)

44. The class was expanded? I was on the waiting list - does this mean I'm in? (Fingers crossed!) if so, I'd better hurry and get my supplies!

45. Hello! Checking in on the balance remaining for the Sealant fund before bed! How much more is needed, please? :D

46. I was outside for over an hour trying to clean a head with non-acetone nail polish remover, elbow grease and an xacto knife. What a pain in the neck. Took forever, and there is still remnants of the prior face up in the ears, nostrils and mouth. So frustrating. It seems like the prior face up artist didn't seal the head before painting it. :doh

47. The class is capped at 40 participants. If you were on the wait list, if someone drops out you will receive an email from con management. :)

The latest status is that we have collected $50 out of $75. Almost there! :)

Nail polish remover can be less than effective, and depending on if it has dyes or fragrances in it might stain your doll. :( I have a section on the "Tips" page of my website about cleaning, maybe it will help? http://angel-toast.blogspot.com/p/tips-and-tricks.html

Also, I would recommend using a sewing pin instead of an x-acto knife for stubborn spots, since it allows for more fine control and you are less likely to slip and accidentally cut too much. I hope this helps!

48. News: Sadly, Dybukk isn't able to make it to Dollism after all; but we have a super exciting replacement for her, one of my personal favorite artists: Caroline of Viridian House! :D

49. Yay! I found the thread!

I have a practically full can of MSC that I can share/donate (I've only used it on 2 faceups so I'm pretty sure there's more than enough to spare). I don't do faceups that often, and I only plan on getting one more doll in the near future.

50. I'm sorry you experienced such difficulty removing the previous face-up! I use Winsor and Newton Brush Cleaner and let it sit for a couple seconds before rubbing a Magic Sponge over it. With the sponge, you can really get into the ears if you use it with a cotton swab (remove the cotton and use the stick) to push the sponge into the nooks. I agree with using a pin, it's more flexible and forgiving. To get the tiny line of paint out of my dolls' lip seam, I poured a little brush cleaner on the lips, let it sit for a second, then gently brushed the pin along the seam as I held the head under running water.

51. I noticed using a soft bristle toothbrush helps a lot to clean the ears and lips after letting the windsor and newton cleaner sit on a head for a few seconds.

52. I am looking forward for this face-up class because I have never done a REAL face-up on a doll before.

53. Hopefully we'll be able to inspire you some! :)

UPDATE: We have reached our sealant fund goal! Thank you for you contributions, everyone! :)

54. Yay for reaching our goal!! All my faceup materials have started to arrive. Waiting on a couple more things and I'll be all set!

55. Still need to find time to clean off the head I'm going to paint and re-coat it. The weather and my life haven't been in alignment yet! :doh

56. Yes, not long now! Hope everyone's getting ready ;)
If anyone has any specific questions or requests feel free to let me know! I'll be bringing a small bundle of my personal favourite painting brushes since I have one kind I like to use, they're long and thin rather than the short kind so I can let people have a go at using them.

57. Question (don't think too badly of me for it): would I be a jerk for bringing two heads to work on?

I planned on bringing a yo-sized head to work on, but I've been meaning to redo one of my msd's for a while (but class and work have been keeping me from doing anything other than sleep during my free time).

I'm also bringing/donating my can of msc if that makes any difference.

58. You are welcome to bring more than one head, though you might run into a time issue. We are aiming to have everyone done with each layer at around the same time so we can spray all the heads at once. If you think you can work on two heads in the same amount of time others devote to one head, we are rooting for you! ;D

59. Challenge accepted [emoji48]
Well I might end up bringing only one because I'm having am issue with the headcap magnet of the yo head I was bringing (I posted about it somewhere in the customization forums).

60. >_< Of course I realize while I'm at work (I'm flying out today) that I forgot to seal the head I'm bringing.

There wouldn't be an opportunity to do a quick seal before the workshop, maybe on Friday, would there?
