Dollieh Sanctuary is shutting down

Jan 4, 2024

    1. Apologies if I'm not allowed to post this.

The Dollieh Sanctuary chat board looks to be closing down in March when the domain name expires. I just want to let everyone know so they can save any tutorials and resources they might want before they're lost.

    2. I’m sorry. That’s really sad news.

    3. Just found out the forum will continue, an angel will keep it going.

    4. On that note, is DOA archived? I feel like with how the internet is going in general it may be worth it to back it up if no one has. My partner and I had been discussing how we'd go about doing that if it hadn't been, but I am thinking that's beyond my skill.

    5. I hope there's some sort of backup or archive already for DoA. Luckily, using the Wayback Machine is super simple and there's already some very interesting snapshots of DoA dating back to the year 2005 (almost 20 years ago now! :o)

Very interesting to see the old website layout from back then!

Internet archiving and lost media are fascinating topics so I'm very happy to be able to share what I know about it!

    6. If there is something in particular you want to save anywhere on the internet I would suggest saving it. You can save some web stuff as a pdf but make sure it formats right and doesn't have ads floating over the text you want. At the most basic screen shots can be your friend.

As for the Wayback Machine don't count on it to save everything because it literally can't. A good portion of its saved websites are sited in Wikipedia articles, which is why they're saved in the first place, but even then some parts might not be there.

    7. YUP. Seconding this. The Wayback machine is... another website. And image hosting is pricey.
I've started archiving personal copies of websites that are important to me. If someone else needs a copy, I'll share via a Google Drive link (cuz I pay for extra storage) with the caveat that it's a personal copy I am sharing for personal (i.e., not commercial) use. I've noticed that academic papers have started doing this - they'll post the website link, the last time it was accessed, and follow with "personal copy on file with author" or something like that.
The internet is ephemeral, sadly. If you need something - best save a copy and make sure you have an offline back-up copy.
