Props Dollhouse project, The roof

Aug 24, 2021

Some of you have been keeping up with my dollhouse project. After months of patiently waiting, my carpenter came through with this fabulous roof. Now all I need are long galleries to set on either side. When I started this project, I didn't know what was possible. It's beginning to look like this is going to have quite a run. Since this much has been achieved, it seems crazy not to ask for more. What do you think?

The success of this emboldened me to ask the universe for this. I talked it over with Glenn (the hero carpenter) and he seemed to think it was possible. Now, really? OK. Taking the challenge. We may do a prototype first just to get used to using the materials. I think picture framing would be a good place to start. I know a person who does gilding (for the canopy) and if we can find reeding or even an already made circular frame, we might actually achieve this. Stay tuned!

    2. With doll creation, thinking outside the box is always helpful. The round top piece could be achieved with an embroidery hoop or the lid off of a peanut butter jar ( or jar with the right sized lid), anything round and lightweight.

The bands going from the top to the posts, I would recommend dressmaking boning, the kind with the cotton covering, for it's slight stiffness and the ability to form a shape.

Dowels and beads to create the four posts ( depending on the scale you need), I have used chair legs found at Home depot for bed posts before...Railings for staircases might work, again, depending on the scale you need.

Check the craft stores ( or online) for filigree polymer clay molds for details..or jewelry filigree or connector components...

look for thin fabrics that drape well for the bedding. Iron on interfacing is awesome to firm up a thinner fabric for areas like the head and foot boards. Pad the head and foot boards with batting before you cover them, it gives it that soft puffed out look while still staying smooth and relatively flat. I use a spray adhesive to attach the batting to the backing to keep it from moving while I lay the fabric over it

Just some ideas and suggestions from some of my past projects, I look forward to seeing how yours transpires!

    4. @Valdemagra I just finished planning a simple long room. Its success will depend on how it is decorated because the frame is very minimal. It has to be easy to lift, this thing is big and accommodates my SDs. Thanks for asking, stay tuned.

    5. I was given a doll house today! It's all wood and from the 1940s! I'm not sure I want to start a project thread yet though, holidays are coming and I've a ton of projects planned. It is so wonderful though!! It has original vintage wallpapers that I want to save, a staircase, a closet, a fireplace, and 6 rooms with a big roof I'd like to put on hinges.....oh boy! *rubs hands together* ;)
