Dollfie Dream - General Discussion!

Sep 24, 2006

    1. -Hello everyone-

I of course am very new here, so please be patient with me.
I have noticed that this has been brought up in many threads, but nothing seemed to have the information I am looking for, so here we go!

I will be ordering my very first doll soon. The more I researched the more I saw that the DD dolls were recommended as first time dolls,
this brings me to my questions:

      1) Are they able to wear SD sized clothing? (Skirts, blouses, shoes, stockings…)

      2) What are there measurements from head to toe (including shoe, eye, and wig size)

      3) And about accessories? Are they able to wear SD sized glasses and so on?

      I am very nervous about purchasing her; I do not want anything to go badly. So all I have been doing is saving money being too paranoid to buy anything towards her. -_-;

It seems it would be a good idea to ask the greats about all of this.

Thank you so very much to anyone who can give me a hand.

    2. I have DD, :D. You check my sig for pictures of her.

DD's are very skinny. To give you an example: they can wear American Model outfits, some Cissy outfits, some 18inch Kitty Collier outfits, and Hopscotch Hill T-Shirts. They have very skinny waists and very BIG hips.

      Because of their large hips, they can wear SD10 pants, they are a little loose though. My girl doesn't even have any pants. XD;;

They can wear some SD sized shoes.
So far, I've bought all my girl's shoes from a local doll shop.

I don't know about measurements, but that has been posted somewhere before.

I didn't know this, but apparently, DD head sizes, all vary. My Femi (Crescent) has a big noggin and can only wear size 8/9 and 9/10. But others can apparently wear 7/8. I guess it depends on what head mold you get.

    3. There are lists of the measurements someplace in the information sectons of this thread, but I can't rmemeber were they are. If you would like, when I get home again tonight, I will measure my DD, and tell you all the specs. I just got her, and I'll be making all of her clothes... but I do know that some of the SD clothes from volks fit- it's just that a DD is so curvy, with a narrower waist and a she's all legs, and they have narrow feet compared to SD, so you have to be wise with the shoes. And the different DD heads are different sizes, so I 'm just going to order a DD wig to begin with. Right now she has a feathered hair I made.
I'd s ay go for her. They have great skin, and pose like they have a mind of their own, I'm in love with my girl!
Off the top of my head, I don't know exact threads, but look around on the boards and use the search feature, there is info like what you're looking for around. And if you need those measurements still, I've got the measuring tape, and a DD right here.

      Good luck :) !

    4. Yeah, I have the 03 head, that's as cute as can be and her head is quite a bit smaller than my sister's doll's 01 head. Again, if you can't find measurements, I'll take some for you, and I'm working on patterns for DD clothes, because there aren't many that fit well that are also to my tastes. Maybe in future, ,if you got the DD I could help you out with the clothes too? :sweat

    5. My sincere and heartfelt advice to you is: Never mind what people reccomend as being a good "first doll" - go for the one you fall absolutely in love with!

Now, if the doll that takes you breath away is a DD, well and good! They are lovely dolls, very cute and versatile, not to mention posable!
However, if you aren't fond of the anime-like sculpt DDs have, or if you expect a resin-like doll, they aren't for you.

I have seen too many dissapointed after having purchased a DD not to caution you.

      As for your questions:

      1) Are they able to wear SD sized clothing? (Skirts, blouses, shoes, stockings…)

DDs can share general SD/SD13 girl clothes pretty well. What they have trouble sharing is bottoms, pants and skirts. This is due to two tings: DDs have itty bitty waits, pants and skirts fitted for a SD made with a fitted waist band are floppy on a DD; and the fact that DDs have very long legs - pants that are meant to be ankle length on a SD is unflatteringly just above the ankle. Think 1960'ies pant lengths!
Bottoms made for CP Luts probably are a better bet, since Luts girls are much skinnier than SDs.

      2) What are there measurements from head to toe (including shoe, eye, and wig size)
There's a DD FAQ somewhere that lists a lot of useful stuff, like measurements... And of course I seem to have mislaid the link.

      3) And about accessories? Are they able to wear SD sized glasses and so on?
The different DD heads seem to differ slightly in size, but generally DDs have smaller heads than SDs. Glasses made for smaller headed resin dolls - SD13 boys, Luts boys, Elfdolls and so on - are a safer bet. You could also try MSD sized glasses.
Other stuff than things that go on the head should be in the same size as general SD stuff.

      4) Any general information or hints that has worked for anyone?
I can't think of anything.... Anyone else?

Good luck with getting your first doll! :daisy

    6. Here's some bobo quick measurements I just took with no particular purpose in mind, just to give you an idea of her size.

      Height, 22"
Back of the neck to waist, 4"
Narrowest part of the waist, to the floor feet, 15"
      DD03 Head c., about 8 1/2"
Feet, about 2 1/2 inches long, and 1" at the widest part of the foot.

      Bust, 9 1/2"
      Hips, 9 1/2"
Waist, about 6... (she's wearing a dress right now, so I pulled the tape tight)

That should at least give you an idea.
Aaand the sun's going down, but I'll try and get some pics anyway.

    7. I bought my girl's shoes at a local doll shop and she wears size 6. O_o; They are very narrow shoes though. I'll be taking her back to that dollshop next week, so I might have a better idea then. Shoes for the DD, it's very awkward.

    8. And just to ask, there eye size 18mm right? Or am I off course on that too?

I'm also thinking about getting Yumi or Kyoko so that I have somewhere to start.
But on top of that, it seems like a L-sized bust will make it even harder to find clothing that fits.

    9. I've got 20mm metalics in mine, but she doesn't have much white around them. I think 18s will just lead to more white showing around the colour of the eye. My sister's doll has a little more direction to her side glances, with the 18s. I like the big doe eyes :)

    10. Eye size depends on the head. ^^; I had a whiteskin DDII with the #2 head for a little while and she wore 18mm eyes just fine(Actually, the eyes were 16mm, but they were a type that has large irises/pupils so the coloured part was the size of an 18mm). My Femi, though, needs bigger eyes - 20mm in a type that doesn't have big irises, 18mm in a type that does.

Actually, now that the large bust is out, all the blasted clothing Volks is making for DDs is for the large bust. -_-; So no problems there, blech. *pets Femifish*

    11. LOL, yeah... this is why I look at buyable clothes with interest, and then give up and make stuff instead. I need to buy socks though.... it's too hard to make socks. :doh
However, I am glad the doll that arrived last Friday did not come with a large bust. That would have been a surprise. *_*

    12. Dollmore has some really nice socks and stockings I'm pretty sure they may work, with a little tug here and there.

    13. Stardust if you are looking for Femi or Cheryl, they are both still available on Volks USA website for 418$.
      http://www.volksusa.com/dollfie-dream-image-character.html
I don't know where you are from, but shipping from volks USA to north america is rather cheap (about 20$). Hope this helps :)

    14. I was looking around for a DD general discussion thread, this was all I found - and instead of starting a new one (and probably getting it locked) I thought I'd make an attempt to bump this one back to life. :sweat

I'm getting my first DD soon - the fullset Dollfie Dream Marya. I'm not familiar with the character Marya or Volk's Lost Angels story (couldn't find any info on it either) but I don't think I'll have too much trouble discovering my own persona for her, I totally fell in love with her and I'm trying to decide now if I'll keep her fullset outfit in storage as not to damage it or stain her (white skin + all black outfit = disaster waiting to happen, even though the outfit comes with a full body slip).

Might eventually get her a new wig too, we'll just have to wait and see :D I'm so excited!

    15. Yay! I'm glad you're excited about it! The DD is a wonderful doll. :) DD are very versatile, so I hope you have fun wig and eye swapping for a while. I'm sort of locked in on how my girl looks, it's had a big impact on how I see her personality. I thought about changing her head once, but now I don't don't think I can do it. She's my Aislinn as she is... :) I hope you have as much fun with your doll

    16. I have a Dollfie Dream/Lishe hybrid, but I tend to think of her as a DD! I love the DDII body, it's so feminine. It took me a while to get used to the feel of vinyl rather than resin, but I love it now!

    17. I have a DD2/DES hybrid, who is soon going to have to share/give up her body as I am getting a 01 head. I have the original Delf body that came with the DES head, but the DD2 body has utterly spoiled me!

I'll have to eventually get another Dollfie Dream body, just because I'm so enamored of them now!

      -Meredith

    18. I bought some flesh-coloured Dollmore tights for my DDII body (so she can wear dark coloured trousers etc without staining) I really should have bought the body stocking from Volks, I think. The tights are too small for the DDII body and they bag at the ankles so she can't wear certain shoes :( I'm really disappointed because $6 for some tights was such a bargain.

I've tried her wearing some trousers, but the tights have been pulled so tight and there's ladders in the legs, so I didn't keep the trousers on for long. At least uniform stains would be better than stripey ones! Ahh, well...back to the drawing board.

How does everyone else prevent DD stains?

    19. I made some stockings for my dolls, which I use under pants (even on my resin kids). Other than that, I try to make sure that the clothing has no excess dye, is washed well, or I don't keep it on long (or have her in lighter colors). Haven't yet had a stain (but I do make my own clothing, so that may be why I'm so lucky).

      -Meredith

    20. I did well with one of Dollmore's body stockings [Get the SD size - Model Doll size is far too long on a DD, unless you like bunching around the ankles and waist. :|] It doesn't do much for the arms, but I've been lucky so far - only thing that's stained was her fingertips, and that was from a Volks skirt. XP Came out cleanly at least.

    21. Thanks, I'll try those suggestions. I've got some junk tights here to try my luck with too.

I'm also looking for tutorials on how to dissassemble and blush a DDII body. My Lishe head is completely the wrong colour and it's the body that needs to be blushed to match rather than the head (which sucks so much because I've seen Lishes that match DDII perfectly!)

    22. My next doll is going to be a DD. I found them very cute, and much more customizable than my resin kids. And they arent so delicate as resin either, so I can bring her with me when I need company at the manga-store. Bet they will love here there, posing among the figmas and figurines.
There is still lots of things I got to learn first. DDs are very different... And its going to be my first big girl. Cant wait till I can afford her. :)

    23. One thing about DD that's you newbies will love is their ability to HOLD a pose. Ailinn's so good at staying in a position, and if I put something in her hands, I know she's not going to flop and drop stuff. She very easliy holds the newest addition to the family, my tiny Thayet as well. Some of the other larger dolls couldn't take the extra weight of her.

    24. I saw a DD body at the last meet up I went to, and loved it. Question for the DD experts here: Will a Volks School C head fit on the DD body, and match the normal skintone?

      Thanks!

    25. It should work. I think the DD neck is the same size as a SD13 girl and School C fits very nicely on an SD13 girl so that should be fine. I have a K-Doll head on my DD body and there's only a small gap at the head/neck joining. My white DD body matches Volks Full Choice white, I'd assume the NS resin and vinyl would match too.

    26. Thank you so much for answering that!

I'm thinking about ordering one, and getting the large chest to go with her. On the USA page they have additional hips that you can order---are they bigger or more defined then the hips the basic doll comes with?

    27. I think they're replacement hips if the originals get damaged, so they should be the same width :)

    28. QQ: that is the best advice I have heard! It's so true ^^

And I have a DDII incoming! Both head and body second hand and from two different sellers, but I'm really exited :D Will put up picture if people want when I have her, and I'm luck to have a sister with great skills on the sewing machine to get her the prefect fitted cloth I want to her :)

And: My DD will be based on a boobilisious anime character. I'm very curious in the L bust I will have on her... have seen wonderful pictures of it ^^

    29. Does anyone know if Musedoll shoes will fit DDII feet? I love them and some of them would be perfect for my character!

    30. Extrapolating info a bit-

Musedoll shoes do not fit SD16 girls according to the SD16 clothing thread. Volks SD16 shoes fit my DDII girl's feet like a glove. Based on that, Musedoll shoes will not fit fit DDII feet.

Perhaps someone has actually tried Musedoll shoes on DDII feet and can give you better/direct info.

You might want to check the SD16 thread for more leads on heeled shoe fit.

    31. Woah you can put regular Volks heads on DD bodies?? O.O why didn't i know of this before???

    32. Thanks...I'm a bit confused because I have some SD Dale Rae flats that fit my DDII perfectly and as far as I'm aware Dale Rae shoes won't fit SD16. Hmm. More research is needed...!

    33. I was considering getting dollfie dream parts and putting it together myself, I just have a question.

When you order a Dream body, does it come with the strings or do you have to buy those seperately?

Also, if anyone knows where I can buy a full - possibly used - Dream I would be happy to buy it when my money comes.

I am a total doll newbie, if everything goes right this Dream will be my first to collect.

I want to name her Elley.

    34. Only Dollfie Dreams type I are strung, a type no longer sold. The current Dollfie Dream is type II, and has an inner skeleton with a soft outer skin on top of it.
The "parts" you see for sale at Volks are the soft outer skin to a DD. They are not viable as parts on their own, but need the inner skeleton - something which you can't buy as a part from Volks.

Places to get a whole DD, as well as dressed DDs, are for example:

      • Volks
      • Yahoo! Japan
      • DoA's marketplace (when you have been a member long enough and posted enough)
      • eBay etc.

A good idea is to Search for Dollfie Dream and read up on everything you find, in order to help you avoid making mistakes when buying your first DD. Good luck!

    35. If you want to assemble a Dollfie Dream II, there isn't much to it if you buy the parts. The only doll parts you'd need to get would be the body (sold as one unit), head, eyes, and wig. After that you'd need a faceup and some some clothing.

I got a Dollfie Dream II as my first doll, and I love her. However, as Quiet Queen said, they don't sell internal skeleton parts for them so you have to be careful. Some of the joints have screws that can be tightened if they get loose, but I made the mistake of trying too hard to lift my doll's shoulder up and now she has a "bad" spot where the joint is loose and there's no easy fix for it.

    36. You should be able to put every SD-sized head on a DDII Body. You'll only need some string to attach the head to the shoulder part. But I have never tried it since my girl seems pretty happy with her DD head :sweat

    37. Hi guys! Just like to ask: Have someone tried to swap a Super Dollfie bust with a Dollfie Dream L-Bust then restringing them as usual? If it is possible, is there a need to mod any parts to do the trick? As I have read here, DD has an internal skeleton rather than elastic strings to connect its parts, but I am not sure if they could share parts aside from the head... Sorry in advance if I am asking an odd question though :sweat

    38. I don't think anyone's tried to swap the busts, but I highly doubt it'd work - the Dollfie Dream busts are soft vinyl and are rather squishy on their own, and you'd probably end up with a hollow, deformed chest. :?

    39. Yep. That's what you'd get. :sweat The soft, hollow Dollfie Dream chest pieces are not meant to be strung together with high tension, sandwiched between two pieces of hard, heavy resin.

If there is some sort of mod that could be done to make this kind of hybrid project work, I have yet to see anyone post about it on DoA or any of the other BJD boards I frequent.

I have seen a lot of people asking about this type of modification lately, perhaps someone should give it a try and see what can be done!

    40. Thanks Anriko and idrisfynn for your answers, I just realized that my idea wouldn't work. It seems that I have to think of a different option for those L-type busts... but the solution will be off-topic to this thread :doh Sorry about that, hehe.

    41. Does anyone know the measurements of the L bust? I've got one in the mail and I'd like to start looking for clothes that might fit XD
I have to get the poor thing in parts, the NS body isn't in stock and I figured I'd get the stuff I wanted now before they go out of stock too :sweat

    42. My first contact with BJD's was a DD, i was so intrigued by it, because of that i wanted to know more about them. I think their beautiful, and i like how they pose. But i found it difficult to buy them, i mean in the Volks USA site, their always sold out and i don't have the know how to customise one. Well i hope someday to own one of DD.

    43. Actually, the USA website and LA store maintain separate inventories. It's actually worth it to email and ask if they have any in the store to sell to you.

On the other hand, you can apparently still buy Nanoha from the International site. Everything else is "out" though. :|
      http://www.volks.co.jp/en/goods/index_goods.aspx?sbct=18&sbct=17

    44. The L-bust is 26cm around, with an underbust of 17.5cm, compared to the 23cm/17.5cm M-bust. :)

    45. Could someone tell me about how often they release new character dolls? I know the Gurren Lagann girls are about to come out so I was wondering how long it will be until they announce the next dolls?

    46. Well... I've wanted a soft skinned doll for quite a while and have heard that DDIIs are made of soft vinyl and have squishy boobs (haha... I'd have so much fun with those)
However, I'd like a better description of how the dolls actually feel (I've looked everywhere and can't find much)

So do they feel like a barbie dolls, or human skin, or... squishy things that I can't really think of right now. I'd love to hear examples of what they feel similar too, because I really want one but I'd like to be sure of what they feel like first (since that's really what I'm buying one for, I love the body sculpt but really I just want the soft vinyl)

Gosh I wish I could meet one in person, but since I can't I'd love your guys help! (Although... if anyone's in the Boston/Cape Cod area ;) )

Oh another question, I know DDIIs have a skeleton inside with the soft vinyl over it. Do they "indent" when you press them like barbie dolls do? I'm sorry I can't explain that better, but essentially does the body part loose its shape if you press too hard?

    47. I've never owned a Barbie, but the body part does lose its shape ("deflate") if you press too hard. It goes back to its normal shape after you release pressure on it. This is only really noticeable on the breasts though, since that is the only area that has a lot of space between the skin and the skeleton (i.e. has a lot of air underneath). If you pressed on the arms or legs, you would only press down a few millimeters before hitting the hard skeleton.

As to how it feels? Er, I don't really have a good comparison. But it doesn't feel like human skin and again, I don't know about Barbies. But if you're just brushing your fingers over the skin, it feels a bit like unsanded resin, but much lighter and softer. Sanded resin would be way smoother.

Edit: Oh, and the boobs are soft, but not what I would describe as "squishy". They aren't silicone or fluid, though that would make a valuable mod, I'd think.

    48. But still i still prefer resin instead of vinyl as i own 7 DD dolls as the staining of the wig and clothes really a pain in the A**

    49. May i know how do you change the feet of the DD doll?

    50. They slip off, kinda like boots or rigid socks. If you don't want to damage the foot (cut it), use a hairdryer to temporarily soften the vinyl enough so you can pull the foot part off. Then use the same technique to soften your new foot part and slide it on. :)

    51. You use a hair dryer to heat the whole feet? As for the exchange of hands also the same method?

    52. History question: Did the release of the Yukino type DD happen before or after the release of the 2007 Ayanami Rei DD? This is not the Rebuild of Evangelion maid cosplay version which came out last year but the prior one which came with a swimsuit and a towel and you had to buy school outfits for separately. I detect similarities between the two face sculpts.

The Rei doll is reported on one list here as using the Aoi sculpt but that girl has a tsundere scowl on her face, not a "lost in thought" sort of melancholy expression. Which is also pretty much Rei's default expression too. ^_^

Actually I think Yumi-tan got excited by being at AX and wants to get into cosplay. ^_~

    53. So yukino shared the same as rei?

    54. That's what I'm trying to determine. I don't really know yes or no but they look like similar sculpts.

    55. According to chibichibiusa, who is the goddess of Dollfie Dream girls, "yes", the original Rei that Volks released used a DDH-02 head, which is the same head that "Aoi" has. It looks like they (Volks) added a bit more color to Rei's lips, as opposed to Aoi. Here's another example of a DDH-02 head from one of the members on the DD Flickr group...

A slight touch up on the mouth, and Aoi's "frown" has been turned into a grin.

As for the "new" Rei, released in 2008, here's a photo of the new head mold...

Also, as far as "history" goes, I believe that Aoi and Yukino were both released at the Volks Dollfie Dream Gathering (think of it as a Dolpa for DDs), in October 2007, but AFTER when the original Rei was released.

      Hope this helps.

      TC

    56. Sweet...I knew you'd come through!

Interesting, interesting...a little modding can go a long way to changing expressions. I really am not too fond of Aoi's expression, though, even after the mod. She just looks like she's going to scold me. Not like she's going to get medieval or anything like that. If she gave off that impression she'd be a lot cooler.

Note on icon: replaced because I forgot I had one of my littles in the pic with her. New icon to come, with a better portrait of Yumi-tan.

    57. I am looking for a body for my Vdes in WS. I wonder would the White Skin DD II be a good match?

    58. Dollfie Dream skin colours are quite consistent, so the trick would be matching the Luts colour. Search for CP/DD hybrids and when you find an excellent match ask the owner which year (and if possible which time of year) the head came from. Luts resin varies pretty widely from batch to batch, so it's impossible to say all Luts heads will match all DD bodies.

I have a question too :) I'm looking for clothes for my DD H01, Momoko, and I'm trying Dollmore first because the prices are pretty reasonable. I have a few Dollmore SD pieces which fit fine, but the skirts and trousers I have won't really fit the Dollfie Dream thighs of doom. Has anyone tried going up a size? Would Dollmore Model Doll clothes fit the Dollfie Dream body better? Hope someone can help!

    59. Dollmore Model clothes would likely be too darned long - I have a body stocking for my DD2 that not only bunches up about two inches of fabric at the ankles, but the torso is about two inches too long as well. If you're discussing short pants, maybe, but I haven't been able to try any on mine recently. Hope this helps some!
