I know I cannot be the only one out there bothered having my dolls go out commando. I just brought 6 pairs of underwear and still need to get two more. I am surprised by how many full sets don’t even include underwear. Do you guys even bother with bras? I feel as they as unnecessary for many of my dolls since their busts are smooth.
Most of the time bras make things too bulky under clothes; however my Dollshe Ausley Love wears one to keep her pointy-nipples-of-doom from putting out any eyes (Yeah, I could sand the nipples, but it hurts ME to just think about it.)
I've got a Souldoll who's got that kind of very round bust you see on the more old-fashioned dolls. Was never a fan of that kind of shape, it doesn't look natural on its own, but with a bra it magically turns into something realistic because it sells that push-up effect, and looks quite pretty that way.
Funnily enough, my fullsets not coming with underwear doesn't bother me, because once they're set and dressed, they're mostly displayed and not played with or their outfits changed. I got underwear for the dolls based on my dnd character and her friend though so that they wouldn't have to be naked while I work on their outifts lol. For bras, I got a cute set for my girl, but tbh, most of her styles would be halter tops, so she won't actually be wearing it often. But as a character, she's the kind of person who'd buy herself cute matching set, even though she's also the kind of person who'd wear a swimsuit under her clothes most of the time xD
I'm someone who likes to make doll clothes myself, so I typically would just make the undies for dolls who don't have them. But sometimes the extra layer interferes with the clothing in unexpected ways, so I can understand why it's not always a consideration, especially when it comes to dolls that are meant to be dressed up and played with. But for me, typically I'll make them some undies to wear while I work on their outfits, and then attempt to at least keep the briefs on for the full outfit, but have no qualms removing them if it interferes with the lay of the fabric, or it becomes visible beneath the garment when it shouldn't be. It is a little funny how niche doll underwear is though
I only use them under skirts! I like to keep flashing risk to a minimum, and I've always found them too bulky under pants or shorts. If the dolls are naked, they're either on their way to being dressed or I'm sewing something for them, and then the underwear gets in the way. I might use them more if I had a few nice, well-fitted pairs instead of the single pair I made from a fabric scrap that has one of the seams sewn the wrong way out, but oh well
I don't bother - aside from the fabric bulk/lay issue, I pose my dolls a lot and form-fitting underwear gets stuck in joints. I'd rather not have this interference with posing! Only exception is if someone is wearing a short skirt where there's risk of flashing - then they wear panties/bloomers. Don't have an issue with pointy nipples - yet. If a doll has them and I don't want to sand them down, I might consider giving them a bra. But I've also used washi tape pasted over them to try and 'smooth' over a pointy look.
I always found undergarments for dolls unnecessary, unless that was the theme of my photo-shoot. I also find it adds unnecessary bulk. However, I make all my BJD clothes, and find undergarments a pain to get just right. With my tinier mist recent doll, I find I don't mind the bulk. As he is extremely willowy, I feel he can use the extra layers. I've been contemplating learning how to make better briefs for him. I recall a Japanese doll magazine had a pattern for some fitted for Byul/Pullips. I saw it on Etsy, but never thought I would need it. A million years later, I regret not paying the $7 they were charging for a download... DX Short answer, I now feel it depends if the doll can use some bulking up. Otherwise, I find it unnecessary. (:
True to the medieval-ish setting most of my dolls are in, they go commando. Why waste fabric on fitted underwear when a shift works just fine? It's also just practical, as noted in posts before mine, due to bulk and just asking to get stuck in the hip joints.
Generally I only have my dolls wear underwear if there's a risk of them flashing something unintentionally. Bras I find to be way too bulky under shirts and so I wont bother with them for dolls unless they are just wearing the bra and no shirt over it. I am not afraid of sanding nipples down if that's the issue. I have a lot of skinny boys who wear boxers or briefs to bulk their hips out a bit and keep pants from sliding down. If anyone is wearing a skirt, I definitely prefer them to be wearing something underneath. It doesn't bother me if they aren't, but my friends and I joke that they've failed the assignment if they are caught without. I don't even remember exactly how that joke started but it still makes me laugh. That said, if a doll is prone to sucking fabric into their hip joints or 'eating' their underwear every time you try to pose them, they definitely just go commando!
I would LIKE them all to be in underwear, especially my modern children, but the outfits do tend to fight against it. Even so- if the clothes are dark then they are wearing long-johns and an undershirt even if it does make for a tight squeeze. I stained a white-resin boy with a hoodie because I didn't put an undershirt on and now it's a firm rule.
I prefer for my dolls to have underwear, but sometimes, it's just not reasonable. Like when they wear something that needs a smooth look and the underwear make it look bulky, or when they have that hip/lower stomach joint (that I despise) and the underwear waistband keeps getting caught in it, or when the pants ride low and underwear will be showing no matter what. Other times, they really need them, like under skirts/dresses, or specifically, two of my boys have very low stomach tattoos that the snaps on pants really scratch up when they sit if they don't wear underwear. About bras, again, it depends. I use them more for fashion than anything, or to wear under sheer tops that body blushing would show through otherwise. I....really don't care if the shape of nipples show through shirts, that's a normal, natural thing for some women and I see no reason to hide it.
All of my dolls have panties, but I only have bras for some lingerie sets- as stated over and over, the bulk makes them difficult to work with... Most of my dolls did come with undies- I think I had 3 dolls that had bloomers instead of panties, but I bought some afterwards. The recent release of Volks YoSD Ayu and Yua are my only two dolls to ever not come with any form of undergarment. To me, I give my dolls underwear for the same reason I put socks on my Sims in the Sims games; it adds an (unnecessary) point of realism to me.
My girls have knickers (or long spilt-crotch drawers, since the majority are Victorian in their styling) my Victorian boys have long-johns too, the modern boys do have underpants but they are often bulky enough to show through their ttousers so I skip them in those instances. Hardly any of my girls are old enough or developed enough to be wearing a bra, and, while I do have some for the modern few who are, they again show through their tops and make them look weird, so I skip them (it's not like resin needs the support) The older Victorian girls should be wearing corsets over their chemises, and I do have them, but again, the bulk of a corset layer in doll scale is an issue so they don't get much wear either. Yeah, my girls are the same with their historical (up to the 19th Century, at least) and one of my boys has a pair pf medieval style braes for under his hose, but they cause an awful lot of bulk in doll scale so I usually leave them off or his bum and upper thighs look lumpy with hose over them. Teddy
I have a few pairs of briefs floating around, never bothered with bras. As others have mentioned, I do appreciate having underwear on when the doll's wearing a skirt, especially the short skirts I dress some of them in. I will have to keep the strategy of using the bulk to keep pants on in mind; I don't tend to go for tight pants, but I have accidentally purchased some pairs that are too loose! I also need to make a pair specifically to hold a, well, packer essentially! I don't want to do resin modding but I do want to change a doll's "equipment," so a soft-sculpted packer seemed like the best way to go.
I HAVE them for my boys, but generally any bits that would be noticeable are usually removable. I do have one doll that's wearing like a Lacey see through outfit so they do have under wear cause I don't think their character is that obscene as to be flashing the goods just because. But generally I am unbothered. Alt I have bought one pair of undies though, the rest someone came with. Like that translucent 70 cm from offline came with them funnily enough. Like bro, I can see through you and your heart is trapped in a rock, I think your peen is the least of our concerns. hough I really only bought 2 full sets, one was the murder bun and it's already so fantasy, not having under wear really is not a concern and the other is Baldwin from ring doll, and tbh, he is made up like a Victorian noble lady. He could do with LESS fabric. I say this as I keep cramming his flowing ball gown into my cheap IKEA cabinet.
I don't bother with bras, but if a doll is wearing a dress or skirt I put underwear on underneath them. I don't want them accidentally flashing the other dolls, or me for that matter. All of my girl dolls have underwear, I also made boxer briefs for the boys, but they don't wear them while dressed, that would be bulky under their clothes. If the shirt is very thin and see through I put an undershirt on my dolls.
I would rather mine wear underwear because I like realism, but most of their clothing is made to fit them perfectly, so underwear doesn’t usually fit underneath. At least that’s the case with the underwear that I’ve tried on them.
I *love* the lingerie and all of my gals have more or less fancy pieces to wear. None of it is visible, obviously, when they’re fully dressed but I love the stuff anyway. Especially the lingerie from the Edwardian period - chemise, pantalets, and layered petticoats. This piece was inspired by an image of a museum piece at the Victoria and Albert Museum. and here is another set also museum image inspired: Spoiler: more Edwardian petticoats
Not corsets though? Do you leave out that layer for the sake of bulk reduction? Those are gorgeous undie sets. My girls ar envious - they have to make do with much plainer sets. With ten Victorian girls to sew for, I don't have time, energy, or patience for all the lace insertion they'd like so they have to do with a ruffle or two and some tucks. Teddy
@Robyn_in_WA @Teddy Those are some incredibly tiny pintucks, wow! How do you keep them even when they're that skinny?
It's actually very easy. I use a stitch-in-the-ditch foot. It has a guide that the fold sits up against and keeps your stitches a set distance from the fold. I'd be hopeless without it. Teddy
Thank you @Teddy !! Yes, I prefer to omit corsets - too bulky under clothing. Those are darling petticoats that you’ve created!!! They don’t need added laces! I will have to try to find one of those stitch-in-the-ditch feet - would love to try that for the tucks. Great job on those!!! Thanks so much @JaxxCapta !! Unlike Teddy - I use a pintuck foot and twin needle to create my tiny pintucks. It takes some spin-up time to learn to do them well - and even then - sometimes the thread breaks and one has to ‘patch’ it up! But I do *love* making heirloom pieces and feel it’s worth the time and effort. Very fine fabric is a must in order to get the pintucks to ‘stand up’ properly and proper thread tensioning. Here is another piece of lingerie - a nightgown based on a 1905 museum photo. It has almost 9yards of French cotton laces and lots of pintucks. Giselle is modeling - LLdt Edria head on Iplehouse nSID body (62cm).
I always try to put my dolls in underwear but no bras because sometimes they can show through the tops or dresses and look not too flattering
I honestly haven't thought about giving my dolls undergarments. I quite like the natural look of the nips showing through the shirts (although, most of my dolls wear quite flowy/oversized clothes). A lot of the time, they're wearing layers on layers of clothes, so it hides the nips and isn't much of a problem. I quite like them going commando, but there are some exceptions, like if they're wearing darker clothing, then I'd like to make sure they're wearing something underneath to prevent color transfer.
My dolls are all male, so I at least don't have to think about bras ahaha—tangling with those things in real life is MORE than enough for me. I HAVE undies for my boys, mostly just because I find the realism of it endearing. And hey, sometimes they just wanna hang out in their boxers and a t-shirt . . . because who doesn't? Buuut . . . most of the time they just end up freeballin' it. The undies I have for them aren't bulky—I purposefully hunted down ones that are nice and thin! But even so, they just end up bunching up and giving my guys some kind of weird Lumpy Crotch Syndrome I think the fact that I focus on MSDs doesn't help much with this. I have one SD (been meaning to sell him for a year+), and the undies his little outfit came with don't seem to cause the issue I run into with my MSDs and little YOSDs. I think the larger scale tends to allow for the addition of more details like that without sacrificing the overall look/shape of the outfit. . . . I could be totally off the mark though, lmfao. Could just be that particular outfit (':
Wow this is lovely! I also feel like the nice part about stuff like this is how easy it is to dress them
All of my dolls wear underwear. My boys especially I have in undergarments to protects their bums from discoloring. Though they also wear them because many of their pants dip too low when they’re in a “sitting” position. Waaay back in 2009 or 2010 I was at a BJD convention, and afterwards, a few friends and I took a city bus to another part of town. While holding my doll in my arm, a very dear elderly woman on the bus got my attention with an “excuse me,” and pointed out that she could see my doll’s butt xD his jeans were too low when in that sitting position, and he was practically mooning everyone! So everyone has had undies since.
All my MSDs have panties or boxers, but only the Racoon Doll and Miracle Doll girls have a bra. I prefer not to have pointy nipples making dents when they're in thinner shirts. My mature tiny women all have panties (since they fit ok in purchased ones), but the guys all go commando. Some of their pants are fitted, and I also don't want to go through the trouble of making them.
Underwear was not something I was thinking about for my dolls. Maybe it will be outfit dependant because reading here tells me underwear adds unnecessary bulk for clothing fits. I believe if I will put them in skirts they’ll need underpants. Pants they go commando.
Undergarment is a must need for my dolls especially when they're wearing skirt or dress I feel like when they're having it on, they're being respected. Also the realism helps me feel more comfortable, 'cause the uneasiness whenever I realize that under the skirt/dress they're basically nude! Horrifying I would say. It's totally fine if I see or know someone who doesn't have undergarment for their dolls, but 100% my dolls need to wear them everytime I bring them out to hang out.
