Sewing Doll Scale Fabrics

May 6, 2021

    1. Dolly seamstresses and seamsters, do any of you guys have tips for finding doll-scale printed fabrics? I'm thinking especially of lolita style border prints, so I can sew my YOSD size dolls some dresses, but any finds and tips are welcome.

Bonus: My most recent sweater. Not perfect, but I do think it's pretty cute :blush

    2. For small prints I usually cut apart underwear and baby clothes (all my dolls are tinies so I usually don’t need a lot of fabric). Dress shirts with prints and ties can be a source of fun fabric as well. For borderprints you could try looking at children’s clothes/fabrics, handkerchiefs and tablecloths or maybe stitching a patterned ribbon onto your fabric?

      Your sweater looks really nice!

    3. Men's cotton dress shirts are my favorite source for in-scale plaids-- and since I buy them used from thrift stores, the fabric isn't stiff, so they have a nice drape.

    4. Quilting cottons can often be found with very nice small scale prints. It's not uncommon to find fabrics suitable for loita among them. It will mostly be all over prints, not borders, though.

If you do look for scaled down border prints, make sure that it's clear who the designer is and that the seller has the rights to sell the design. Sadly, just like the BJD hobby has problems with recasts, the Lolita fashion has problems with replicas and sometimes the fabric designs are stolen and reprinted. I have seen scaled down printed fabric sold specifically for making BJD clothes out of on Ali Express. Do not buy these. It's easy enough to find the source for the well known prints, but small brands designs have also been stolen and it's very tricky to track them down, so don't assume it's their own designs even it it looks original to you.

    5. Yeah, I saw those and the effort put into even concealing the design theft (art theft?) going on was, uh, not very impressive. I really wish I could find a non-theft-y version of something like that. u_u I'll design and print it myself if I have to, but I hope to find something a bit easier.

    6. I wish you the best of luck in your search!

    8. For smaller prints, I usually look at cotton fat quarters for quilting, new but inexpensive underwear, and thrifted baby clothes.

    9. Seconding thrifted baby clothes! They have little prints that sometimes look good on dolls as small as 1/6 scale :)
