Naturally this looks to be different than with fashion dolls whose ears tend to lay flat against their heads. Do you pierce front to back, like a human ear? How about the best tool to make the proper size hole and a 'clean' hole (in order not to cause ear damage). Is jewelry from BJD very popular, especially earrings. Or is there a danger or more potential damage by piercing the ears. I just don't recall seeing a lot of BJD with earrings. Thanks
This thread should have your answer: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...ings-How-to-pierce-ears-lips-bellybuttons-etc Anything about changing your doll would be in the customizing forums, whereas this sewing and jewelry side would be for the things made for your doll. Not all piercings on BJDs have actual holes made, a lot of people just glue them on. I can't really say if it's popular but I think that if the ears are usually covered by the wig anyway and it's not really essential for the dolls character then people may not bother with earrings.
Just go to your local hardware store and ask for a pin vise It's a really cool hand tool, about short pencil sized, often comes with small drill bits. I've used one for almost 10years now - perfect ear piercings every time. It is very stable and easy to control. I'll echo the comment made so many times - don't use a Dremel or other power tool for this!!!! Robyn
Hi everyone. :3 I've started on (finally) getting my boy Vulgar's piercings on him to make his character truly finished, but of coarse I picked some difficult piercings to find for doll-sizes. To be far I created this character before I got into the hobby. :P His piercings are like these: http://www.topfloormusic.com/keywords/Kyo_Dir_En_Grey_/Kyo_Dir_En_Grey__22.jpg I've already given him his lip ring, but he still needs the spikes, nose stud, and the ball stud that goes with the largest spike. I have NO clue what to use for those spikes, except for just small gauge human piercings. Can't even think of the name. Derp. Also, I'm having trouble finding small enough metal beads for him. (He's MSD) I've really only been to Wal-Mart so far, though, since Hobby Lobby and such is a bit out of the way. I think I'll try and get to Hobby Lobby whenever I can, though. Oh, and I'm just gluing them on with tacky glue. Thanks!
I apologize if this has been asked and answered, but I don't.. really want to look through all 39 pages for it n_n; I want to add lip and ear piercings to three of my crumpets (two of them are MNF's).. but I don't want to do any drilling. What do you suggest? What kind of glue and rings should I use (glue that preferably, if I were to ever want to get rid of the piercing, the glue won't damage the doll) Thank you!
I used a sheet of flat back self-adhesive (I scraped the adhesive off with my nail) rhinestones from the scrapbooking section for my guy's newest set of piercings. There were three sizes and two colors per sheet, the smallest worked for facial piercings on my MSD (labret, eyebrow and nose, they're a little bit big especially on the nose but not too bad). Elmer's glue held the smallest ones on, but I had to switch to stronger tacky glue for the next size up on his ear.
sad day I was wanting to ask what kind of tools would be best to have or invest into if i wanted to start doing piercing on dolls the one I own currently is obitsu which I know is thicker rubber then other dolls so I would guess that the tools for doing percings on him might not be as hard to do...but the tools are probably different t some how yes? any advise from anyone would be great though thanks!
Hi i have a question about belly button piercing i was wondering if i could glue like a ring on or would i have to drill?thanks
I was wondering what a piercing would do to the resin. Would there be a hole there forever? Will it crack the resin?
Yes, the piercing will be there forever, since resin doesn't 'heal' like human skin and it isn't malleable. However, a piercing that is done correctly will not crack resin. Several of my boys have their ears pierced, and I haven't had any problems with fracturing or cracking. ^_^
My Chaaya (Iplehouse JID Isar) had her ear lobes pierced by her faceup artist (Akiko Smith with Vitta-Vera) and the holes are perfect with no signs of stress lines or chipping. Her holes are only 1/32" instead of 1/16", but I don't think having the larger hole would've been a problem as I've seen dolls come from Iplehouse with the larger piercing size and look just fine. I added the cartilage piercing after she came home. It's slightly smaller than the holes in her lobes. Here's my girl, btw. Hope that helps. :-)
Most piercings will be permanent--the holes at least! There are some who take tiny balls from ball-chain jewelry and glue them on, but piercings I've done use gemstones and are flush to the resin, so yes, you have to drill holes and it doesn't look pretty without the "jewelry" in, heh. The smaller and thinner the resin piece you're trying to drill a hole into or through, the greater chance there will be it may crack. I have seen a doll's ear piercing crack off, but that was a 12cm tiny. So just be careful and buy tiny drill bits from your local hobby store.
If you want something that won't cause a hole, use water-based school glue to attach nail-decor gems. Then you can always wash them off when you get tired of them.
That sounds like an interesting alternative... can't I use hot-glue there as well as it's save for sueding??
Nah, not hot glue. You most likely couldn't get a bead small enough. Cheshiretiffy's right, use a water-based school glue such as Elmer's.
Thanks you, mangaemi! Akiko did a fabulous job with Chaaya. She took the time to get to know her character, asked a lot of questions and we talked back and forth about some details, but after that I just told her to go for it. I love her style and knew I'd be happy and I am. I sent the smallest Dremel drill bit I could find so that her hole would be small enough to not be too noticeable when she's not wearing earrings, but was large enough for the wire I'll be using to make the French hooks for her earrings. I may have one additional hole added at the tip of her left ear, but I'll let her tell me if that's something she wants. :-) Edit: I went ahead and added the additional piercing. :-) The picture above shows all of them.
Hello, new collector here. I'm totally new to the BJD hobby, I just ordered my first doll and I'm trying to get everything ready for her arrival. Thing is, the doll is based on a D&D character with an excessive amount of piercings and I was wondering if anyone had some good advice on how to do them. I appologize if there is already a post dedicated to the subject, but I couldn't find any. I'll enclose a concept drawing of the character, so that you can get an idea of what I'm going for : Thanks
Aside from the ears, most of your piercings will probably do best if they're glued on. Those aren't really places that would be easy to drill tiny holes into to give actual piercings on a doll. For the ears, you can either glue on all the piercings, or, if you'd rather, use a TINY drill bit or a nail drill (used for piercing nails) or something similar and carefully and slowly drill out all the holes for the piercings. I've got a doll (a RS Lu head) that has a LOT of holes drilled into his ears waiting for me to make his earrings and chains that hang from them. I'm sure there are threads here somewhere about doing that.
I have only made piercings in plastic and I do it with a hot needle. I cannot guarantee how this would work with resin.
Okay, well. For the bar piercings, you can use nail art beads (called bullions, which you can get here) and a straight pin to glue them on. They're the perfect size, and, if the glue is cured properly, stay on for ages. Or until you take them off, that is. One of my boys has clavicle piercings, and the easiest way to do it is to position the beads so that it appears to go under the bones. And for navel piercings, you want to make it look like it's actually going under the skin. For hoop piercings, jump rings are the best option. With needlenose pliers and a wire snipper, you can shape the metal into any shape you want. These can also be glued on, but, mainly for ears, some people like to actually pierce the resin. Since you want so many of them, I don't suggest that. Putting too many holes in ears (elf ears in particular) will make them weak and even more prone to breaking. You might actually pierce one and then glue the rest? Hope I helped, even if everything I've said is liable to make no sense at all. >.<
A quick search of this section for Piercings will turn up thread after thread of methods, examples, tutorials and so on.
My MNF girl is getting (today! She's getting them today!) some dermal piercings today which I'm putting on (will link pics when I've got them), and I'm using round, flat brads from a scrapbooking supply shop - maybe they could work for you as well? Here you can really only get them in the one shape and size, unless you're lucky, but elsewhere in the world you might find them. My girl is getting four in a row on her neck, and I've got the brads (which I have always called split-pins, they're the ones you put through paper and bend the little leggies in opposite directions to hold them on - I think 'brads' is the USA term lol!) I'm just gonna cut/break off the leggies, and then use tacky glue to stick them down - I don't want something permanent, but still want them to look okay heh!
Since this is the first Piercing thread i end up in and found, i thought i would ask my question here; Is there anyone who has a good idea or great advice on what to use for normal piercings. Tiny balls or studs, whatever...because i can't find anything good to glue on my boys face (it's an SD) or find anything hat will pass for a good piercing. It's bothering me because now i just can't finish his face-up etc and i already asked on facebook and a dutch forum, but i am not really receiving any answers. So...any help? Thanks already a lot for reading etc =)
Like I said up there, nail bullion beads work really well. I have a few boys who've got some epic facial piercings and they look really natural. Just the right size for SDs, too! ^_^ Happy piercing!
Well, Sally's sells them here, but they don't ship internationally outside of Canada. DX BUT! I also found these, which are on eBay and ship worldwide from London. I would use the little silver beads at the bottom. Either size should be fine, depending on how big you want them to be. If you want gold, they have those, too. I hope this helps!
Ooh, just noticed this thread and had to pop in to say hello since I recognized Lucy. >w< To remain on-topic---I agree with those who suggested gluing on the piercings rather than drilling holes for them, since heavy modification can be scary when you're just starting out. That way you can easily remove them if you place it wrong or what-have-you, and you don't have to worry about any permanent damage.
Search for hand drills on ebay, that's what you need to make tiny holes - and when you're drilling, take your time! I learned that the hard way! The hand drill I bought came with a few drill bit sizes so I generally use the one that will fit 16 gauge jewelry because the jewelry isn't too hard to find online for pretty cheap. If you're not sure about sizing it's probably best to get your jewelry locally from a tattoo or accessory shop. The downfall of buying locally is that body jewelry costs so much more in brick and mortar stores Edited to add: Hand drills work for both plastic and resin. Oh and maybe use pencil to mark the spot you want to drill, just in case your hand slips!
the drill bit I have for when I need a fine, tiny hole is 1/32" or a 3/64" sized drill bit. If anyone is wanting to drill, and wants to know what bits they need. 1/16" could do as well. Also a drill master rotary tool is a good price for $10-16 bucks if you search around on ebay. It comes in an 80 piece set. Arbor Freight, sometimes Walmart and Lowes carry the drill master kit. search: drill master 80 piece rotary kit, or a variant. I have that, and a regular dremmel tool.
So after poking in this thread I got inspired! My BBB Tony, Wheatley is kind of calling out for piercings, so I've started the process. So I went back to some of my random stuff, and pulled out a pair of earrings that have the long wire tail that comes out the back. I forget what it's called. But I nipped it off at the top of the curve, and did some other trimming to get it down to size. I knew I'd need the curve because I wasn't interested in sanding down his earlobe. Fiddly things like that probably comes down to specific sculpts. Those with a more open ear shape will be able to use a more straight bar. But all I did was tuck the end of the wire into a very convenient gap in the mold of his ear in front, and it's just a few degrees below horizontal, all glued in. The wire looks like a good proportion to me, and the spiral on the one side is actually the spiral part off the earring! Here's some pics! Here's a progress pic. I've actually got the head in the bottom of a piggy bank that'd had bags of jellybeans in it. That's just white glue. That neon green teardrop shape was actually the earring everything came off of. (I'd lost the other one. I think that might make a fun necklace, though.) Final product: I need some balls to finish it off with at the ends, but I'm really happy with it. Especially since it's my first ever customizing job. More pics in an album: http://imgur.com/a/FSVDnj
My mom got those nail bullion beads that DeadRoseCircus mentioned and I think they are the perfect size for MSD too!! so I used them on Rosiel...I was afraid of even touching his face but his character demands some piercings so, with the help of this thread I took the courage and completed him =) (he still needs his tattoos though) For the lip ring I used 3mm jump rings from amazon, they're also the perfect size for MSD lip piercings!
I see a lot of you recommending PVA. So I'm starting to feel better about trying that out on my doll. But part of me is still concerned with possible lasting effects. Is there anything I should before putting it on his face? I want him him to be my lil 'alternitive rockstar'. And what is that without a lipring and a few other piercings right? Lol
This is what I finally ended up with for Nyne's dermal piercing: IMG_1371 by Miss Carrion, on Flickr I do think they are a little big, but they were the smallest I could find anywhere - they're brads which have had the legs snapped off. I'm happy with them for the moment, but if I find a better alternative (as in smaller!) I will move onto those I think!
Have you tried scrap booking brads? They're pretty easy to find in most craft stores or online. If you have trouble shoot me a pm and I can try and pick some up and mail them to you.
All these tips are making me want to go poke holes in a doll... >.> *Eyeballs the crew to see who would look good with piercings*
I bought the nail bullion beads DeadRoseCircus suggested also! Levi couldn't decide between facial hair and a labret for awhile, but we went with the labret in the end and I love it. C: He only needs the one piercing, but my punk boy Damien has a few lined up (as well as some tattoos). I also found tiny (doll-sized, actually) bottles of bullion beads at the DOLLAR STORE in the US. It's worth a shot if any of you live around anyone. I can always find doll sized props there, but I was really excited to find these with the nail polishes!
I lloved this thread. I don't think I will be brave enough to try it for a very long time, but great great tiips here, for when I AM ready..
I've never done ANY modifications to my dolls. I usually just leave them as they are besides changing wigs and such. However, now I'm dying to add some piercings to my boy doll. What size mm jump hoops would be appropriate? One person used 3mm for their MSD so maybe 4 or 5mm for a SD boy? I feel like such a noob...
I have pierced many of my dolls ears, successfully, using my Dremel Stylus, and setting to low speed. I use a tiny drill bit for drilling beads. I learned at ACEN 2007 to aim straight , not to go off to side, or else you will drill in to doll's neck. I have done eyebrow piercings on an off-topic doll I have, and would like to try nipple piercings on a doll in the future...but those might be glue-ons.
I actually used a .7mm drill bit for my SD boy and I think it's a good size. It gives some versatility; I used a .5mm originally, but I found that the jump rings I'd gotten for him didn't fit. It all comes down to what size earrings you want to use, but I sort of compared mine to the size of human earrings and went with that (so he could wear human earrings now, if he wanted to). My advice is to start small; if you drill with a .5mm drill bit first, you can always easily go through with a .7mm later, since you've already got the hole to guide the drill. That aside, I used a pin vise and hand drilled it and it worked perfectly, no problem. Using a pin vise, all the drill's power is from your own hand, so it'd be hard to lose control of the drill. So, if you're feeling intimidated by the idea of using a drill, I'd highly recommend a pin vise. You can also sort of brace the pin vise against the palm of your hand for stability, if you have shaky hands. Also, mark your holes lightly in pencil ahead of time and use a needle to make a faint indentation to start off the drill.
He's my favorite too!! and NANA was also the reason why I wanted to pierce all my dolls but only one of them has the character that demands it XD
I'm waiting on an Iplehouse Edan and for certain pictures and scenarios, he'd look wonderful with earrings. It would fit marvelously. However, I'm terrified of ruining him. Is it possible just to have the company pierce his ears? And when the earring isn't in, what does the hole look like in pictures? Is it very prominent? How do you keep earrings in, anyway?
