Modification Doll Piercings: How to pierce ears, lips, bellybuttons etc.

Sep 11, 2004

    1. First, sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'm kind of new to the forums. I tried looking for this, but I guess either no one's asked this before or I just suck at searching (probably the latter) :sweat but I've been looking for anyone who has done MSD/pixie/elf ear piercings! It's a little scary to me to try to pierce Loki's ears, she's a Bobobie Pixie, and I've yet to see any tutorials or tips for doing ears like hers. I don't have a doll with "normal" ears to compare the differences to, so I'm not sure if there's anything I need to keep in mind about her ears. Also, I want to know how possible it would be/how close i can get to the small tip of the ear without it breaking. :? Can anyone tell me if maybe i need a 1/32 drill bit (seeing as most of the SD tutorials use 1/16) or if that's a bad idea...
I asked my dad who has a lot of tools, but he just wanted to take a giant power drill to her head, to which I responded NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :...(
Advanced thanks for any help. :)

    2. I had a BBB March with pierced ear tips so I don't see why you couldn't do a MSD.
My old dolls were done with a heated sewing needle held with pliers.
You just have to be careful not to break the ear, meaning take a good look and make sure it's not being pierced in an area where it'll make the resin much more likely to break by leaving only a little to hold together.
Which means you can't pierce the exact top of the tip but you should be able to get pretty close.
Really I think if you just take a good look and think about it carefully you'll be able to find the best location.

    3. I have a BBB Ariel and when ever i feel like having her wear earrings i just use small jump rings and squeeze them on with a tad of glue. That could work for you if you don't like the idea of drilling into her ear.

    4. I also have a BBB Pixie, and I pierced her ears using a dremel I borrowed from a friend. I'm not sure what the size of it was, but I pierced the tip of her ear with the same drill bit as the lobe of her ear. It may have been a 1/16 bit. I'll ask my friend, see if she knows.

You can sort of see how her ear is pierced in that picture, it's the best one I have. Her lobe is pierced with a ring, which contains the dangle and a chain connected to the ring piercing the tip of her ear. Both piercings are drilled straight through the ear. I had no problem drilling, I just made sure to go slow and gentle.

    5. Thanks everyone, I have a little more confidence now that it's not as easy to break as I might have thought ^^; but I will still be very careful and go slow with them. I just wasn't sure how delicate the pixie ears were compared to others.

    6. just want to say that i had my dad help me with Loki's piercing tonight! we went with the heated needle method
      http://twitpic.com/3olx8u
it came out perfect, thanks everyone. :)

    7. Looks good. Glad you went for it.

    8. I wonder how you would do a lip piercing then? Though I will most likely do this with my doll's ear's now, thank you!

    9. facial piercings are more often done with glue then not. There are threads all about that.

    10. Great job! I'll have to try this myself with my girls! I have 4+ and only one of them has pierced ears..I keep forgetting to ask for it when ordering! XD

    11. Arianna's were done with a pin vise. Veeeeeeery carefully.

    12. lovely! ^-^

    13. HIIIOOOO

Looking for a good site/seller that does custom peirce jobs on BJD's??

Anyone know where to find the places?? i found one but the site doesn't have the function anymore so looking to get some facial peirceings for my Ringdoll MSD.

      Thanks for the help!!! :cheer

    14. I'd tell you to look in the marketplace under customizers but you don't have MP access and you probably won't for a little while. Till then, just wait I guess.

    15. Thanks for that!! yeah just gotta wait and be paient just throught i would ask around as well ^^

    16. As a stand in, you could glue tiiiiiiny silver beads (plastic, not metal, so they're light) onto your doll with some white glue or research what kinds of glues are resin safe if white glue won't hold. It won't be permanent, but it will be a stand in. And you'll know exactly where you want your future piercings to beeee! =3

      <3

    17. Like Chriandra said, your best bet is to wait until you have marketplace access and pay someone who will do it for you.
Or like Lucifer-Ann said, you can do it yourself! Funny enough, I have the same mold as you, and I did his lip and eyebrow piercings myself using the white glue method. It's a good way to see if you really want your boy to have permanent piercings without taking a huge step, and it's cheaper than paying someone else to do it for you.

    18. Those facial mods aren't drilled in. Like people have said, they're white glue with little bitty silver bits glued on. I wouldn't recommend superglue, just white glue-that way they can be replaced easily enough.

    19. A lot of people just use the white/clear Elmers glue and find tiny beads or that. Me I got a tiny Dremel bit set and drilled holes in my doll's ears and eyebrow. It takes like 5 minutes and I just twirl the bit in my fingers. I think its a 1/32 size.

    20. Its probably been said before, but I wanted a loop earing for my msd boy, so I took a loop from a chain, opened it up a little (enough so it could fit on his ear and not scratch him/slide off) then glued both sides of the loop onto his ear.
turned out better then I thought too :) I'm gonna be doing more peircings this way too.

    21. I've been looking around the forums, and can't for the life of me find any info on what people use for stud piercings. I can't find anything that small that isn't a seed bead.

      What do you use?

Where can you buy them in the US?

      Thanks a bunch!

    22. Well, my lip is actually pierced, so I just use the old tops from my labret studs. A 16 g works pretty well for msd and sd size. It's easier if they're internally threaded. I'm sure there's a cheaper alternative out there, but most barbells and such aren't that expensive if you order online.

Edit: I should say internally threaded studs are easier if there's a hole drilled. If not, use externally threaded studs.

    23. Actually, unless the tops are really small, even 16g imight be WAY out of scale, if that matters to you. If not (and some of my boys do have oversized ends), then yeah, 16g or higher ends work. If you're looking or something more in scale, nail deco beads or very tiny (and by tiny, I mean 1-2 mm) shot bead also works. Many beauty supply stores should have the nail deco beads, and I know you can get them cheap on ebay (I think a few dollars for 500-1000 is the average). I'm always losing ends off of my jewelry *has a face full of metal*, so I use nail deco beads and various sizes of shot bead cut off of chains for my boys.

    24. I personally use salvage gemstones and drill in, then use CA glue. One of my MSDs has genuine diamond snakebites thanks to a broken human ring.

    25. I lose ends a lot too, and I like to match my snakebite, so if I lose one, it goes into the extras drawer. I use those for crafts eventually.

You do have to look for slightly smaller ends for dolls. If you're getting internally threaded studs, it's usually a lot easier to find smaller ones because they don't have to be big enough to fit around the post. Here's an example on a MSD sized doll for those who may not know what I mean.

Sorry about the bad picture, I just snapped it quickly on my phone. I'm redoing that faceup too.:|

Also, the nail deco beads seem like a good idea. My main reason for not using most beads is the hole most beads will have, but I'm guessing nail beads don't have them. I might have to look for some.

    26. Ooh, nice! I like that faceup, and that piercing looks good at that scale. (Dolls with stitches FTW!) Internally threaded ends are definitely easier to find in smaller scale, so they will certainly work better for people who want real jewelry ends. THey could be better for permanent anchoring too, just drill a tiny hole and screw the piece in.

Yep, nail deco beads generally don't have holes. The ones I have are on a plastic sheet and have a little flat spot on the back where they can be glued, but some are just tiny round beads/balls. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=nail+art+beads&_frs=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m359 That might help. ^^ There was a store selling 500 or 1000 piece containers of single colurs, as well.

    27. Thanks and thanks! :) That helps a lot, and they are really cheap. Curse these dolls. I think they turned me into a shopaholic.

I'm glad I scrolled up. I was about to ask if I should use Elmer's glue or super glue. Reading is good. I did use super glue once a while back and it worked out ok, but I'm sure that won't always be the case. Super glue makes me a little nervous.

    28. Hidy Hi

I've spent over an hour trying to find a thread that tells me what peeps use for peircings and how they apply them. Sorry if this is somewhere but I have been looking for ages (3/4 hr).

I am going to be doing my first face up and I want my guy to have some peircings like his mummy but im unsure what to use or even purchase.

      Please help!

      Thankies Kindly

    29. Thanks for that I did see the thread and it talking about hoops, but Im also wondering about studs? If people just use those fit for humans or if the use something else like the cake decorating balls you can get?

    30. They talk about every kind of piercing in there, not just hoops-the later few pages should be where more info about studs are. (That thread is kinda huge, so you may be able to search it for the terms 'stud' or 'bead' to find relevant posts more easily.) Cake decorating balls are generally made of some sort of food (not sure what, exactly, but IME they're usually edible), so no, don't use those. Nail deco beads or small shot bead are what you'll want. Studs for humans are way out of scale, even on an SD, unless you have very small ones (like 18g or smaller).

    31. Thankies muchly :)

    32. Thanks to this thread I got courage and ordered a drill to pierce my kid's ears, today it finally arrived =D

The drill I bought was I think, about a dollar shipped on ebay.
It's one of those used for nails :)

    33. I know that this overdone and I have searched, but I'm having some trouble. I'm wanting to do a septum peircing on my Obtisu Alice's head. Her nose is freaking tiny! I know glue would work, but I'm afraid it would fall off. I've seen people say some things about drilling a tiny hole for the edges to set in and then glueing. What works best for you guys? Would someone please point me in the right direction with a tutorial or something? Thank you! =D

    34. I, personally, have not pierced any of my dolls yet, however it's something I need to do relatively soon. But from the pictures of my incoming HZ doll, his nipples look really small, so I thank all the comments about nail beads. I wouldn't have even thought about that.

As for piercing your dolls septum, I've searched this thread for septum piercings too, and I believe I remember saying that it would be particularly difficult as most doll molds don't have enough in that area for a septum ring, so I would try the white glue/small bead thing too. Unless you wanted a ring, in which case I guess you could just drill up the nose a little and clip a small metal ring in there? Idk, I don't have much experience with this, but from what I've read, that would seem the most logical way to do it.

I, don't think I'd have the guts to give any of my dolls a septum ring. XD

Good luck! When you figure it out, would you mind sending me pictures/how you did it? I would love to see how it comes out!

    35. Good luck on the nip piercings! Thank you though. I'll post some info and pics when I get to it. First I need to buy a jump and a drill bit small enough to workher itty bitty nose.

    36. Does anyone know about industrial piercings? I would really much love to have one for my doll, but have no idea how to go about in doing that :/

    37. [IMG]

Septum peircing is a go! Just some simple white elmer's glue worked perfectly. Had to do it twice though since the first go fell off. I guess I didn't put enough glue on it. The second time worked much better. It's as solid as a rock now.

With industrials, you cut a small bit of wire to fit and glue it in. Then glue two little pieces (beads, whatever) on the outside matching the wire.

    38. :O I would have never thought about using wire xD I admit that is much easier than the method I was about to use (cutting a piece from a note book and straightening the wire out).
And that's perfect come to think of it, as I do have little silver beads that would go nicely with that :D
      Thanks a bunches!!!

    39. .Chibi.I.Kirakishou.- Oh wow! Great job! It looks great! o.o

My pin vise came in from leekeworld with drill bits that I feel like im going to break. Now I just have to wait for my boy to get here to try these things X_X

    40. gosh, I'd be so afraid that I'd ruin my doll....I'd have someone else do it! haha

    41. Thank you! =]

It was a little difficult because I had to pretty much cut the smallest jewerly ring I could find in half and then some. I thought about drilling some, but I didn't have a small enough bit to do it with. The glue method is definetely strong enough to last. BEsides it's not like I'm sitting there wiggling it around. @_o

Those tiny bits make me nervous. I don't have a pin vise though. I've been turning the bit by hand. Just gotta go slowwwwww

    42. Khronus' piercing were only done by gluing.
I ordered a bunch of small jump rings[it was 3mm, I think] on Etsy and open them up and snipped off a little bit[it was totally easy] and glued them on!
For his nose, I also opened it up and just slip up his nose, no glue/snipping needed! XD I want non-permanent piercings as possible!

    43. Woot! I now have industrial piercings xD

Made from straight pins :D You get wire cutters and snip the heads off of the pins (these can be used as studs) and then clip the actual pin and bam! Industrial piercing!
You can also use them as lip piercings or even the bridge of the nose ;D
      [IMG]

    44. I know the rings are called jump rings, and they are availible on etsy, but what the heck are the balls? What are they called and where can you get them?

    45. Mostly, they're nail art beads. They're really easy to find on ebay and sometimes at beauty supply shops. You might be able to find them on etsy, too, or online beauty supply places.

    46. Sorry if this has been asked before I have searched and looked around but the question I want to ask was if anyone has any tips or links where they buy their piercings from? :)

I recently brought some silver beads from the internet but sadly their way too small for what I had planned, they turned out to be mirco beads which are tiny O_O

I've looked around the internet myself and cannot find any small silver beads without holes anywhere :x
Even craftstores, art supply stores, special beading suplliers, nothing.

So I was wondering if anyone could help me finding some of these or have any tips/websites they know of :D

      Thanks in advance

    47. I've been wondering about this as well, and indeed, the only beads without holes I found were Microbeads... Would be great if someone knew some sites.
Sorry for being no help at all here :sweat.

    48. Depends on what kind you're looking for, generally speaking, teeny tiny ball bearings work, but I've also used pin heads cut off and PVA glued on.

    49. I must say, I'd absolutely never thought of that... Thanks a bunch!

    50. (Crap, I double posted D': Sorry.)

    51. Whua, that looks great :D
Thanks again! (Off-topic; totally watching you on dA, love your shots!)

    52. LOL thank you ;) Glad I could help!

    53. Wow, thank you Lulu. Also I am interested ^^

    54. Thank you for moving my question here ^_^ had a major derp moment and didnt think of asking here

      EDIT - *BUMP* :)
