Doll Occupations

Mar 15, 2023

    1. (Weird thread title, I know. Wouldn't it be nice if they could pay for themselves or pay rent?)

Anyway, I want to hear about some dolls in your collection that have a job, occupation, quest, or calling! Especially if you've shaped their wardrobe around it.

(I'm currently doing some character building and realising none of my dolls have outfits that match their occupations! I've got to fix that. And I've sure got that Liebestod Studio Bloody Lake ensemble in my head, though it's out of scale for my crew, it's just so gorgeous. And I do have some vampire hunters.)

Any adventurers with adventuring gear? Doctors with scrubs and lab coats? Monster hunters or manual labourers with sturdy jumpsuits? Share away!

    2. Three of my dolls are students (one in university, two in junior high).
One is unemployed because their character is that they can’t hold a job.
One is going to be an idol/pop star.

    3. My Hana is a ballet dancer, same with Lola (they're in the same company), so they both have leotards and pointe shoes. I'd love to get some of Supia Dolls ballet attire for them but can't justify the shipping costs for clothes, so waiting until I get another Supia doll or they have a free shipping event, lol.

The other's have jobs where wardrobe doesn't matter as much - photographer, art curator/designer, student, writer.

    4. Most of mine are kids so no jobs or even any idea of work. My only adults I haven't thought that as they are here because I love them. So no one here will be paying rent or such. Lol

    5. On the vinyl side, my Dollfie Dreams are all students. They do have a "quest" of sorts as well, which is the rather generic [save the world] trope.
For the resin side, my Super Dollfies are also students, working to uncover the mysteries of their Academy. They're split into three grades, SDMs being elementary, SD10 junior high, SD13 and SDGr (don't have the latter yet...) high school. Any SD16 and SD17 additions in the future would be school staff.

    7. One doll works in a Japanese Host Club. One doll (coming) is a wealthy philanthropist who is immortal and all the sadness that goes with that. The third doll is a teen found by my wealthy philanthropist and taken in as a hyung / dongsaeng (big brother / little brother) relationship. Li'l guy is going to school while hyung takes care of him.

    8. Tesni is a dragon and has mystical responsibilities in the fantasy world I'm slowly building. Her wife Emer helps her. Tesni recently took in an apprentice Oisin who's the human half of a changeling switch raised by an Archfey. Emer's brothers Erda and Dara do adventuring stuff. Dara's boyfriend Gowin is employed closing down and cleaning up deceased magic user's homes and workshops. Cherry is Gowin's assistant but also kind of his kid (Cherry is the embers of an enchanted fire put into an automaton's body). Halvar is responsible for the upkeep of a stone circle and the forest around it.

    9. This is so fun, and kind of wild that none of my dolls based on OCs have any actual real-life jobs, in their fictional worlds. My largest doll (only 67cm, but too big and heavy of a tiny old-fart like me), is a vampire from a world where vampires reign supreme, but most humans are ignorant about it -- the vampires like remaining in the shadows, although they don't mind the sun. He is the first-born son of one of the four reigning clans, kind of like a prince meant to inherit the crown, but they don't refer to them like that in the story. He was his clan's top high priest, until him and his dad had a huge argument and he decided to leave the clan. The father went nuts, he wanted to pass down the throne when the kid was only thirteen, but that didn't go well with the kid. Then father deemed his own son and his name cursed, and classed him as "exiled," when it was the young child's own choice to leave the clan and everything his name stood for behind.

When he was the clan's high-priest, his role was similar of that of a witchdoctor, mad-scientist and a military general. He was feared and thought of as mighty cruel even amongst other clans that were more liberal with their treatment of their "food-suply" *humans*, and equally respected by most any other vampires of equal standing. After leaving the clan, he went on to travel the world to gain as much knowledge as it was possible -- there was only time for him to waste, since vampires are immortal in his world, and he would never age further than looking mid-to-early-twenties. So, his job is after the age of thirteen, is similar to that of a scholar, not to say a lazy-bum with no actual job, but still remaining a mad-scientist who still enjoys torturing his food and just plain being lazy all day long when he has no one to "play" or experiment with. Pretty much what he does all day long, as doll as well, except for the feeding on human blood part -- that isn't happening, thankfully! DX

      Another of my OCs based BJD, from that same world and also a vampire is a run-way model, singer/songwriter, and a revolutionary who wants to change the clans and their treatment towards lower-level vampires, but that's boring in comparison to being lazy bum who enjoys torturing their food until they beg for death themselves. (;

    10. Of the dolls I have currently, only one has a job that requires a uniform, and she's a barista at a fae coffee shop. Another is a (modern day) monster-hunter so she needs an outfit that's very practical, which she has. The others are freelancers, and one doesn't even have enough of a character to have a job!

Of characters I hope to shell, I have two who work in chain stores and would need uniforms, one who works in an office doing clerical work who'd need business casual, another monster-hunter, and three who don't have jobs but do have uniforms for an all-girl boarding school. There's also one who I haven't decided on a current job for yet, but he doesn't have a body yet so it's fine, lol.

Really though, I'm not too pressed to have outfits for every aspect of my characters' lives. I tend to prefer to just get the vibe of the character right, and that usually involves a "default" outfit and then just whatever else feels like something they'd wear. The closest I have to outfits that "fit" the story are for my fae kids, and the only reason they have special outfits is because they live in a fantasy world. I do want to eventually get modern day clothes for them, though, just as an AU kind of thing.

    11. One of my dolls is meant to be a witch, as a job- she brews potions and whatnot and is a scholar for magical beings. She has her wardrobe based around it, even her makeup and stuff, if that’s what you meant!

    12. All of my adult dolls have jobs, and some of the younger ones have part-time ones as well. Funnily, most all of them don't require a 'uniform' per se (and those that do... I haven't been able to find or commission what I need yet), but let's see.

Keiichi works for the Japanese intelligence agency as a statistician. He basically just works in an office, so his work outfits consist of slacks and button-downs (and people typically make fun of him that his style -is- his work clothes, which isn't far from the truth.) Prior to that he was a physics teacher in highschool.

Kohei and Yasuo are policemen, but as mentioned above, I haven't actually managed to get them uniforms yet which is extremely sad! I will commission them someday though. It doesn't help that both of them are giants (5th motif Venitu on a Ringdoll 70 body and Idealian 75..) and that I need -Japanese- police uniforms for them and not just a random set of police-looking clothing.

Durga works for Interpol. A much less flashy occupation than movies would have you believe; he ain't doing any gunning or sleuthing personally. His work dress is a toned-down version of his everyday incredibly flashy coords. Button-downs, turtlenecks, slacks or jeans and the occasional coat.

Shirou is the Prosecutor General of the Public Prosecutors Office, and the youngest runner-up for Chief Justice at the age of 56. He wears tailored black suits for work, accented by a pair of gloves to aid his medical condition. As you can probably expect, he's extremely well-ironed and meticulous when it comes to his appearance.

Haru works as a paralegal in an attorney's office at the moment. That means he's required to wear suits to work. This comes in stark contrast with his 'usual' work, being a theatre actor who is otherwise used to wearing loose and comfy clothes to rehearsals and all.

Kentarou is an activist and public speaker. As, basically, the face of the organization he belongs to he is required to travel about giving speeches and maintain a strong social media presence so his appearance is always well kept and suitably 'flashy' without being over the top. He adores florals and pastel-coloured suits and blazers and often appears with his signature hat.

Naoya is an aspiring makeup artist (and jack-of-all-trades stylist to a lesser extent.) As a teenager getting work experience at a parlour, he wears comfortable but cute clothes, and the shop's own printed tees on top.

Yoshiaki is a private tutor, teaching mostly languages (French & English) and helping other students with high school level language (Japanese), essay-writing, literature, and history supplementary lessons. He studies translation at the University of Tokyo.

Yukihiko used to be your typical white-collar worker by day, and by night he would perform jazz shows at a small drag club in Shinjuku, an occupation which he mostly retains. When in drag as Yukiho, he favours elegant, mermaid-tail dresses and other full length and body covering garments and dons a variety of jewelery and wigs.

Shigeru is a really well-paid host under the name 'Tsuki'. His work wear is expensive and fashionable, with a heavy emphasis on elaborate full-body jewelery and chaste, elegantly masculine suits.

Most of my other dolls don't have 'real' jobs, whether because they live in a post-apocalyptic dystopia -the Crumbling crew- where 'labour' as we know it is largely obsolete, or because they're too young -the Genshin Gymnasium kids are literally high schoolers-. The dollfie dream crew is technically 'employed', on an across-space mission but given that they are mostly inorganic lifeforms (androids of sorts) they aren't as much 'employed' as 'they are their work' (for example Sora is a navigation unit, and the little guys are frame fighters, compact-sized militaty units that pilot big mechanical space suits ahaha). I wouldn't mind getting proper bodysuits for them if the option ever comes up,

    13. Nobody has a "formal" job, really. Nothing they get paid for anyway. Mostly cause they're all preteens!! Except Ilari, but he's not in any kind of condition to do much. Emie and Lorina are both in caretaker roles for a loved one despite being way too young for such responsibility. Frisk was offered a job as Ambassador for the monsters of the underground, but declined. They attend their mom's school instead and occasionally babysit.

    14. Well, most of my guys are students and run some part-time jobs but there are a couple of adult ones. It does not affect their clothes much but it does require some specific props.
      1) Eugene is a 2D artist. He wears casual clothes but I had to buy him a table and an iMac so he can do his job. iMac has a picture of some graphic design software running on it. A gaming chair is somewhere on the way (I'll find a person that will be able to make one for me one day... My hope is not dead yet!)
      2) Craig is a pro bassist. So I had to order two amazing bass guitars for him. To be honest, he is supposed to wear some rock-style clothes but finding any for a muscle 75cm body is a pain (but my hope is not dead yet! lol)

    15. My humanoid doll is a photography student, so not exactly a job per se. But he does have his camera, at least xD. I also have a lesser-god-turned-housewife. He likes frilly dresses (which I haven't gotten to buy for him yet), and does have a monk outfit he wears. My other two dolls are an ancient Egyptian hawk avatar-of-a-god and...a housecat-taur lol. They don't need work outfits xD

    16. One of my dolls' character is a hellhound (they're humanoid in my rendition) professionally for my other dolls' character, who is the princess of the underworld but..an influencer on the surface world lmao. Since the two of them aren't originating in our modern world, sometimes their clothes don't match the time period - meaning some are retro and others are more modern.
Another future doll will be her unaware game developer boyfriend (I still haven't settle don him programming or being a concept artist). He's dressed straight up modern, casual 20-somethings.

And in spite of his young age Sampo is my gardener in the summer time when I can have a potted plant on my balcony. his work clothes are rather basic, but his cap proves that he has graduated from Garden Gnome Trade School:

    18. [IMG]The gang by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

This group of people kill people for a living. Namely, at the behest of the god they work for, they kill dragon poachers, occasionally infiltrate places and steal things, and prevent their God’s rival from causing problems on the plane. In-uniform, the shrike have armour and a mask that makes them all look interchangeable because an inter-realm accord prevents the gods from supercharging more than 1 mortal at a time, and their God’s solution was 1 supercharged leader, and 19 decoys, who are still heavily trained assassins.

On the left is Kora, who was the leader but was “killed in action.” She ended up on another plane, unable to get back and was presumed dead but is very much not dead.

Beside her is Shrike, our current active leader, who does a lot of the coordinating, and is virtually always on-call to back up anyone else who gets into trouble. She’s using the group-name as her name right now, cause she’s in uniform enough it doesn’t feel like there’s a difference, but her other name is Kieran.

Beside her is Coris, their main strategist, and “transport specialist.” Their job is mostly to delegate mission assignments, get in and out of places unseen, and get people who go down in the field home. They’ve had to retrieve Kieran once after she was captured, by breaking into the rival God’s house and getting into his basement.

Ness, beside Coris was never actually hired. They were actually infiltrating on behalf of the rival god, and then found that they got treated much better here, and defected. So now they’re our infiltrate on the other side.

Beside Ness is Sira—I rename her every other week, but that’s fine. She’s one of their best casters—she’s really good at elemental magic, and lives in the middle of a very thick cluster of venomous, carnivorous plants. She maintains a lot of the dragon poaching surveillance, because there are a few species of dragon that eat that plant.

lastly, on the floor there is Mal (Mallory). She’s another caster—they used to be one of their best, but they were captured when shrike was, and Coris got Shrike out first, and then couldn’t get her out. So now they’re working as an emissary to a synthetic god called The Thing That Sees, in exchange for their survival.

Tons of the other dolls have jobs, but I’ll wait until I have pics of more of them!

    20. A lot of my adult dolls in my mature tiny gang have jobs, thought they don't all have clothes to fit with them.

Firenze is a trauma surgeon, who does have scrubs, but still needs a white doctors' coat
      Kit's a real estate agent
Ethan's a jeweler and metal worker
      Lin's an electrician
Conri is a college student and part time waiter/busboy
Rowan is an accountant who's a wizard in his spare time, so he needs clothes for both occupations
Baishan is an architect who occasionally goes ghost hunting

    21. I’ll go by name! I’m working on clothing and pictures for my group. I might update once I get them settled.

‘M’ Oakland: she is my OC for Hellboy and works for the BPRD as an agent. She works as a researcher and negotiator for the paranormal entities.

Quin: He’s an inventor and vigilante. I want to build some inventions and his tactical gear.

Shin: High school/ college student but also a Yakuza Prince.

Yoko: elementary school student/ daughter of a shrine priest.

That’s my crew so far and writing it out has reinspired me to get them better outfits!

Autumn, Brooke, and Celeste are all college students at the same university. Autumn is studying Biology and plans to become a medical examiner. Brooke is studying Astrophysics and wants to work for NASA. Celeste is studying Fashion Design and wants to become a fashion designer.

The only dolls I have with real occupations are my herbalist druid, Sage, and my fiddle-playing bard, Maybryn.

    23. Each of my dolls has a job/calling depending on the story-line they're in:
      • Earth-2032007 story-line. Lianda is a bartender (though she's on a sabbatical right now). Stephen is a surgeon (I'm looking for a lab coat fit for him) and a sorcerer (he's got his outfit and Cloak). Ro is a queen (but never liked crowns, so...).
      • Shattering Dimensions story-line. Peralta is a shaman (she has a mortar, stones and herbs). Murphy is a geologist (he's got a magnifying lens and lots of stones). Illack is the chief of the thieves' guild (he's got a sword).

    24. Rhodeia and Anise are herbalists/witches, Anise also works as Rhodeia's accountant.

Kerry starts as a waitress that occasionally does modeling but eventually gets famous enough to do modeling full time.

      April is a singer.

Dahlia starts as just a fashion designer but begins to occasionally play violin for April's recordings, eventually when she gets more confident in her playing skills and less shy in general she also starts doing live performances with April.

Peregrine I haven't quite locked down, but I'm pretty sure he works as a teacher, either as a general one or as a music teacher. He loves playing the guitar but he absolutely wants to stay away from the music industry.

Oliver (the bird) is a mail carrier.

Haven't come up with occupations for the other characters. Kane maybe just works whatever job is available rather than anything specific, the kids are still kids, and the other characters still have too vague of a personality for me to decide what would suit them. Well, and Nephele is an evil goddess, I think she considers tormenting mortals to be rather a hobby of hers than an occupation, even if she does it full time.

    29. Most of my dolls, aside from the fan dolls, don't have set characters, so they don't have occupations. The one who does is my newest girl, Solayli, my Volks SDM F-37. :XD: The way the previous owner styled her actually inspired the character I envisioned for her.

She's a star explorer, and her job is to collect fragments of falling stars. She wants to one day learn how to restore the broken fragments into whole stars again, and she stores the pieces together to keep them safe until then. It's a fairytale-like setting, not a realistic one. ;)

I set up a little homebase for her on a shelf. You can see the little balls with the stars there by the Cinnamoroll. I hope to have more little props for her space in time...

    33. Rivel (her resin form anyway) is an adventurer, so I guess the modern equivalent to that is something like a freeter (someone who job hops) or a mercenary?

The vinyl version of her I'm planning to shell is a completely different version of her that embodies two other stories of hers. In the main story she's rich and unemployed (lucky her :XD:) and in the fantasy AU she's an alchemist and a magischolar, which is probably most like a modern chemistry research scientist!

Rivel's twin, Ruel (who I still need to buy too, oop) in the main story is decidedly not rich, and works as a sort of stealth operative. I think the closest modern equivalent is either a spy or a black-ops operative, but if it were associated with cults or underground crime.

I really want to create outfits for adventurer Rivel and alchemist Rivel, but fantasy outfits are kind of hard to make since they have so many unique little tidbits like buckles and metal decorations, leg-belt-bags, potion holsters, armor and weapons.... Just thinking about it kind of gives me a headache :sweat

    34. My gang are angels and they have roles/duties. How that would translate into real-world occupations...

Syr is a historian who's often in libraries.
Justinian is in law enforcement. Or was - I think he's gone rogue and is now a vigilante.
Vallant, Zhara and Finch are professional soldiers, currently off-duty. Vallant was pretty smashed up in the line of work, he may have to permanently retire from active service. Not sure what he'll be doing next.
Gael is a soloist in a choir. He sings baritone.
Oshidori ... um. An actuary? economics analyst? some high-powered role to do with markets and futures speculation. OTOH, she may be a socialite who has mysterious sources of income from the illuminati and doesn't seem to ever work.
Hayk is a medic, either a paramedic or a trauma surgeon. He moonlights occasionally as a hitman.
The anpiel runs a bird rescue service and shelter. And it's a professional cat. And we all know that cats don't need jobs.

    35. My story is centered around a high school, so all of the SD dolls have school uniforms. I made all the bottom parts of the uniforms myself, but in the beginning I bought a few shirts unsure of my sewing skills. I know make their uniform shirts as well.

I do have a boys band as well, and I want to make them all stage outfits for the band, but I haven't decided where I am going with that yet. They are not ready to go on tour, so I have awhile.

I let them wear casual clothes on their after school jobs. Also the science teacher does have a lab coat, and the student Dean has a suit, but is not currently wearing it.

A couple of my students at school in uniform. Alice is student president so her blouse has a special trim. Noah, her boyfriend is just a regular student.

    38. When she's home, Vanora's main job is a fisher, but she also helps defend her home and the neighboring islands from pirates when needed (she's a barbarian class). Her best friend, Faolán, is apprenticed to the local physician, but as far as Vanora's concerned, they should just give him the full title and job already (she's very biased as his most frequent and longstanding patient from all the shenanigans she got into as they were growing up xD).
Currently, Vanora is adventuring, so she takes odd jobs when fancy rich people ask her and her companions to, and to get around by boat, she usually works for her passage, helping sail, since her mother was a ship's captain and taught her to sail.

    39. Pete has a job he doesn't dress for (urban fantasy sorcerer) and Vince's only job is 'doll', but for my others...

Marigold and Robin Goodfellow are both forest spirits... not necessarily a 'job', but definitely a calling! Marigold's specific domain is autumn, Robin is just your run of the mill fairy with no special leaning-- but, the woods are her home and her style is going to lean into a DIY -punk spin on cottagecore.

Jack and Deanna are both adventurers, and their signature outfits reflect that-- D&D-verse, he's the party rogue and she's a ranger, but their modern day equivalents, he's a reporter instead of a spy, and she's... well, still a ranger, but modern fantasy setting.

      Bambi is an aesthetician

Sherlock is, as his name suggests, a detective. But he's also a deer. A deertective, if you will.

Marty is a student who does odd jobs.

    41. One of my dolls is a journalist in the Fae realm, but she also has a job of helping a specific newcomer who was born in a human body like her. She isn't paid exactly, it's a different type of economy.

My other doll is from a whole different universe. He is a "Humble merchant", basically a guy with a ship you can hire for various reasons. He is generally not the most honest fella, but he's loyal to his crew. He has a personal growth storyline. I made this whole OC before "Our flag means death" but it's not a dissimilar vibe. He definitely gets paid, even if he has to find a creative way to do so.
