Doll North 2013 Discussion Thread

Feb 27, 2013

    1. Woo can't wait for DN this year~! It's super exciting to see all the vendors coming X3

    2. I'm really looking forward to attending doll north again this year! Last year was so much fun. Now I just have to decide who to bring with me...

    3. Last year I went to doll north with a friend, because I had promised her that I would go. The dolls scared me, and I promised myself I'd never let myself spend that much money on a doll. It only took me half a year to crack....

Well, this year I'll be going with the same friend, except this time for myself. haha

    4. This will be my first time attending Doll North in a few years. I hope I can pop by for at least a little bit. My friend is letting me have a little bit of table space while she sells in the marketplace on Friday so I can hopefully sell a couple of dolls that I've been hoping to find new owners for since last year (a LatiDoll Yellow Lami and a Dream of Doll DOT Sha). I really want to find new homes for these dolls as I don't want to take them home so I hope that can happen. (^^)

    5. @Tanu-Chan: It is very exciting to have Official retailers this year, it will be amazing to meet them and see which dolls and product they bring for sale!

@MidnightFerret: It’s hard for me to pick as well, as staff we are always running around so usually I bring a Tiny to carry around with me! This year I may bring one of my Mini Dollfie Dreams.

@Mianorra: My first experience seeing dolls was at conventions like Fan Expo, its what perked my interest. When friends got into the hobby I investigated more and even though at first it was a little scary for me (the price) I found myself in love and in the hobby. ^_~ I'll look forward to seeing you at the convention, I hope you enjoy your second year!

@Stray_Wind: I certainly hope you are able to have some fun at Doll Market while you are there. We are hoping now that it is spread out over all three days it will allow all fans time to visit without feeling rushed!

We are finalizing a lot of our programming right now and look forward to updating fans soon about what to expect. Our Masquerade and Parabox Face up competitions are open for registration and entry is going well! I am very excited to see the creativity this year for both!

    6. the doll market extension with the time and space should help a lot! I felt so rushed last year in those couple hours =[

    7. This best thing about the new Doll Market is it will be different each time you visit during the weekend. Artisans could choose between and of our 4 time slots so each time you visit there may be a different selection of local vendors.

Our official retailers will be there for the full 3 days though, so don't worry about arriving at a certain time to catch them at their booths ;)

    8. Hello all. This will be first time attending! I'm going with my cousin but she goes for the anime part and we will likely be split up for most the day on Saturday. :-/ I'm bringing my pukifee pong and one of my planetdoll minis. Not sure how much money to take along tho? I thought $120 should be good. Mainly looking for clothes and shoes/boots.

    9. Oh, yay! You have a Pukifee Pong. I've wanted to see one in person before I buy mine. I used to have a Pukipuki Pong, but I sold him because he was too small. But I still love that face. Hopefully I'll be able to see yours some time during the weekend :)

    10. I haven't been able to attend Doll North in a couple years now. I've been informed it's grown quite a bit though! I'm certainly excited that the market is extended for the weekend, especially since I'm coming from NB.

I'm also trying to figure out who to bring with me this year doll wise! I don't have to worry about carrying them around much since I'll be at a table all weekend, but I'm sure I'll venture out for a bit to look around, hahaa. I'm leaning towards my Volks Shiro and F-34 girl, but we'll see XD

Super excited to go this year and to see some people I haven't seen in some time!

    11. Ah its exciting that you'll be able to come this year Elzamine, I really hope you enjoy the event this year! It's hard to believe its already May! I am really looking forward to seeing everyone this year~

I will likely have a couple of my Teenie Gems with me this year, easier to carry around with me! Not too sure which ones yet but we will see~

    12. ^u^ Yaaay Good to see some life in this thread!! I'm SOOOUUUU excited to be attending this year, it promises to be an absolute blast!! Too bad I'm stuck behind a table for the weekend, but I'd love to see anyone drop by and say hi :D !!

Nimbus XD About bringing the amount you wish to spend; I think it's a good practice to place limits on yourself. Also, the ATMs run out of money VERY quickly at anime north XD;;;; [i killed one once, many years ago haha, I felt so bad for the people next in line!]. It's probably best to do some research before hand on what companies are around, look at their websites, etc.... Kind of "pre-shop". Then you can guesstimate how much more you'll need for the secondhand market.

^u^ You can always ask vendors if you can place a reserve, and see if they'll do that for you while you run off to the ATM. You can always weigh savings in not shipping versus buying things the regular way too. And there's TONS of artisans who create wonderful unique designs in Toronto, so leave a bit of wiggle room for yourself ;)

    13. As a follow up to Sleep_Pattern's post we hope to have sign up information posted for the Vinyl Face-up Workshop and the Monster High Face Up Workshop this weekend.

Our program is also finalized so expect to see that up shortly as well!

    14. Ooh I can't wait to see the program!
I'm technically at a table all weekend, but I have a feeling I'll find time and need to disappear for a few spurts :P

    15. I am super stoked for Doll North :) anyone else entering the Doll Masquerade Event?

    16. Plenty, I hear! Everyone is keeping their entries a secret though ;) The more active FB community has had twitters [not the social media site] here and there of excitement, so I think it'll be a very popular event!

    17. Will you be entering as well? :) I have been working super hard on my entry :)

    18. Nope, not me. I'll be hanging out with Gockt at the SADOL vending table ^u^. I'm usually kept busy with customization work or school, so I never get a chance to do side projects like this! I always like seeing what people come up with though. With such a popular theme this year, I'm stoked to see what comes out of the works!

    19. Yes, I am also super excited to see what everyone else has created for their entries :)

    20. I am fairly new to the hobby and never knew that doll north existed till my boyfriend came to me one day and said " hey i got us tickets to go to Anime North because i want to go to Canada " That is when i checked out the site and found about Doll North. I am so super excited that i will be attending this year, cant wait.

    21. Very happy to hear you'll be coming up to visit us zozomigirl19! Anime North is quite the convention I know youll have a lot of fun, I look forward to seeing you. I'll be staffing the greeting table so I hope people will stop by at Doll North and say hi and introduce me to the dolls you bring!

Its getting closer and more information will become available very soon~

    22. hey, I noticed in your facebook page pictures from last year that some dolls had little tiny Doll North badges, which I think are adorable! Will there be some this year?

    23. The little badges are provided each year and usually have different art work from the year prior. This year the little badges should be available at the Doll North Greeting Table :D along with other fun materials sent along from our gracious sponsors!

    24. That's great! This will be my 3rd year at Doll North and I never noticed the little badges lol, guess I was too overwhelmed by the amazing stuff in the room to notice. :)

    25. I am so stupidly excited for Doll North this year. I really like the Marketplace set up. It was nice scheduling a time around my group's shenanigans.

    26. So excited about DN again this year! I have a table at the marketplace but only snagged it for the Friday night. I don't have a whole lot to sell and figured I'd be to busy wanting to actually DO stuff on Saturday and Sunday. ^_^

      I'm also entering the DN Masq again this year. My entry has been a bit daunting, but I'm determined to get it done! So little time though and still so much to do....why do I leave everything for last minute. ^_^;

I'm not sure who else to bring out with me this year....though I'm leaning towards my Egyptian crew. Space is always an issue as I'm flying in and they have to go by carry-on.

    27. Yeah, I wedged myself into a Marketplace table bright and early Saturday, too. I know the rest of the con I'm going to want to myself. Saturdays I usually sleep in or wander aimlessly until noon, so it's the perfect time.

Unfortunately, I have no time for doll cosplay this year, but I did enter the Parabox faceup competition. I started it about an hour ago. I'm going to do it in small bits and give myself lots of time. I'm probably not going to win since faceups aren't my talent, but I figured it was worth trying, anyway.

    28. So happy the workshops are now up! I'm looking forward to seeing them both in action! Just a little over a week left!

    29. I'll be going and staying with another doll friend. I only had my Merak to bring last year... wondering if I should bring all three or limit myself to one?

    30. I am only bringing my Luka this year, I just have way too much to carry.

    31. This will be the first year I have someone to bring with me... Does anyone else get anxiety over possible accidents? This will be the first time I'm taking one of my dolls somewhere, so I'm pretty nervous. Tips/suggestions?

    32. Yay!!:D! So excited it's so soon and I haven't packed yet o_O I'll be around too^^ I am also trying to decided who to bring. Not sure yet but I'm thinking my minis. I can't do the big boys this year and my girls still in the mail oh well I'll bring her next year. I'm just bringing a carry luggage for them nice and easy to wheel them around when I'm tired!! See you all there!!!!

    33. If it makes you feel any better Betheratgirl I traveled with two SDs, an msd and aa yosd on a plane. Hehe it was interesting. I would suggest though that if you are nerves just remember you are among doll people. I was rather nervous of taking mine anywhere but the worst is just having to carry them about, if you have SDs. Much easier with msds and yosds. Just don't forget to relax and have fun.

    34. Last year I missed most of Doll North but I did carry an msd around the entire time, and people were very enthusiastic- but polite! Thank goodness for Canadians and our personal space awareness. I was worried about the Don't Touch The Face business but I didn't have any trouble.

But this year I'll be carrying a yoSD around and she's far cuter, so I guess we'll see.

    35. I'm going to be bringing two SD-sized dolls for the first time. Usually I bring just one and an MSD-sized or lower, but I wanted to bring both halves of the couple. The old man has never been to a convention before, but I'm sure he can handle it. I'm not planning on carrying them around the entire convention since I did that the first year and my arm nearly fell off with just one, but going back between the DN space and the Doubletree will be fine.

Ohhh...I think I've just decided on a third doll I'm going to bring...who will really take up no extra room at all. Gotta love tinies for that ^_^

    36. The tip is to remember that you will be carrying them around all day. SDs are heavier than they appear so don't be too surprised if they start tiring you out. Take a smaller one (an msd or yosd). They are easier to carry around and will not tire you out so easily plus it makes it a little easier when browsing around the marketplace. For the most part you are your own worst enemy but thats anywhere, even at home. Most people will ask to look at your doll, but you don't necessarily have to hand it over to them and if they don't understand it when they ask to hold your doll and you tell them no, then just walk away from them because they are not respecting you as a doll owner. now, there are always new people who don't know a lot about dolls so if you do hand your doll off, make sure to remind them to not touch your doll's face and such since you don't know where their hands have been.

This will be my second time going to Doll North and this timei brought more dolls then last time because ihad no issues with anyone when i was there and it was a lot of fun. everyone is very nice and respectable there towards me and my dolls. i was a little nervous and shy at first but quickly overcame it with the warm reception i received from everyone at the convention. i hope you will have an excellent time there as well!

    37. My best suggestion would be... Don't be like me. D8 I've got to travel with something like ten dolls. Thankfully only five of them should be coming home. Getting them there will be juggling act though.

In all seriousness though, if it's your first time bring something smaller; MSD/YoSD. If you only have SDs or larger than make sure you bring a carrier. It won't keep you from having to tote them around, but if you have one with a strap you can wear across your chest it's a lot easier than carrying 2+ feet of fairly solid resin in your arms.

liyanasilverleaf: You um... Wouldn't happen to be bringing your Hijikata or Date, would you? *u* Cause man would I really like to see one of them.

    38. i totally wish i owned a Date or Hijikata >_>. my goal is to get one of them next year ^_^0 they are on my doll wishlist and have become another set of holy grail dolls i want. i left my sdgr okita at home tooand i'm kind of wishing i brought him along just because i've been visiting toronto for almost two weeks and i've been missing him and the other dolls. okita is my favorite SD, but i will have my msd luts bory at dollnorth to make other people's hearts just melt at his cuteness. between my roommate and i, we are bringing four dolls to carry around/sit at our table in the marketplace on saturday/sunday and along with two heads i'm going to try and sell along with other things that are second handed or made at the marketplace so feel free to stop by and look at the ones we did bring. the funny looks we got at the OKC airport were hysterical though when it came to all of those dolls and two floating heads. i think it was a little obvious that we are going to a doll convention ^_^0. look forward to seeing everyone there!

    39. Aww this sucks! I'm studying abroad in Korea now, this will be the first animeNorth con i'll be missing in 9 years.... ><;;; Plus DollNorth has expanded so much!! *facepalm* Have fun though everyone!! ^^ Hopefully I can attend next con~~ *end ramble*

    40. I'm not going to be attending this year, either. I had to choose between Anime North and going home to see family - I couldn't afford both.

I really enjoyed the Doll North activities last year, and hope to make it to Anime North again next year!

    41. liyanasilverleaf: Oh lord, I totally missed the "Wishlist" part. I don't blame you for wanting those guys, they're gorgeous. I know my girlfriend has been pining for a Hijikata since he was released. A shame you didn't bring your Okita, I'd have loved to see him. He and Ryoya are my favourite SDGr boys.

Airports must be the most awkwardly amusing place to take bags full of dolls. It's awesome you've come up all the way from Oklahoma though. I'll definitely drop by when I make the rounds in the market. :)

    42. Oooh I hear you with the whole flying with dolls thing hahaaa.
I'm flying up tomorrow morning from Atlantic Canada and I already know the airport is going to be the 20 questions game, always is :P
I'll have a carrier with two dolls, and then I've got a second bag just jammed full of stock. Definitely going to be getting the crazy stare XD

    43. I'll be browsing the doll marketplace for a bit tomorrow too. Both my SD and my tiny are coming with me to the con, but I'll probably be carrying just the little one around. I'll be in a mech suit for Friday, so I shouldn't be hard to miss. XD

    44. Thanks everybody for the tips! MSDs are not so bad to carry around, and the carrier idea was very helpful. It was really great to talk to other people who get the hobby- none of my friends really do. Claire & I had a great time in the end, I'm glad I brought her! :-)

    45. Did anyone else pick up a new doll at Doll North this year?

I bought one of the adorable PeaksWoods monthly fairies.

    46. oooh cute! Congrats on getting one :D
I somehow made it through the weekend without bringing home a new addition, but it was hard I tell you!

    47. Will there be a list of who won what in the charity raffle? I didn't make it to the drawing and I'm curious.

I won a CocoTribe bunny in project runway <3 I'm so pleased with her!

    48. I believe that charity raffle winners who were not present will be contacted by phone and email, but don't quote me on that :> I'm not sure if an official list will be posted, but it was a really surprising raffle! XD One person was super super lucky! Congratulations karly!

I did fold! XD I brought home a Peak's Woods Hucky and a fairy from them as well (Fiyah XD, he's so cute!). There were so many really amazing things for sale ;U; I wish I had more money for the weekend!

Doll North was so fun though >u<..I wish it wasn't only once a year, but that's the bittersweetness of it!

    49. We will be making an announcement including all of our winners. We'd like to have photos to go along with all the announcements so we are presently going through the editing process. Thanks for your patience everyone! We are really glad to hear that all of you had such a great time :)

    50. im glad that theres a doll North at AN now! hopefully in the future the event will grow bigger!

    51. Just wanted to shyly poke my head in and say I had a lovely time at my first Doll North with a doll of my own.

The events were fun, the classes were very instructive, and the atmosphere was amazing! I especially appreciate how DOA off-topic dolls were not sneered at, since I own both resin and plastics and I love both.

Congrats to everyone who won a doll, too! Karlykitten, I remember your PR entry and it was really lovely. I got a pair of shoes from the PR participation prize pile, and I could not be happier with them :)

Thank you for an awesome con, and I look forwards to returning next year!

    52. I was so happy to meet everyone who stopped by the Greeting Table/ Raffle table this year. I was the person wearing the pink panda hat for most of the weekend heehee~

It was exciting to see all the competition entries in both the Doll Masq and Project runway this year. We have to think up a new secret material for project runway next year (we already have some ideas!). Seeing all the vendors in the market each day was a treat too, it took so much will power to not walk out with a new doll this year and in the end I still caved and put some money towards a little White Skin Beyla to accompany my Bronze Bygg haha.

For those of you with instagram be sure to follow #DollNorth ^_~

    53. I was wondering, actually...were the pictures from the masquerade recovered? I hope so :/

    54. We're unsure if they will be able to be recovered RainbowUnicorn.
Unfortunately the memory card experienced a complete hardware failure almost immediately following the masquerade. We have ran one round of recovery software on it without success. One of the DN staff members intends to run another attempt for recovery to see if we can retrieve the data. We're doing everything we can.

    55. Oh no! Perhaps we can pool a bit of community power and see if a doll north Phot sharing thread can pull anything out of the dark?

    56. I had so much fun and am totally stoked for next year!

    57. The friend I went with took some awesome pics of several of the enteries. If there's a link or thread started somewhere could we post it here so everyone can post up on it?
