Doll Manicures and Pedicures

Sep 27, 2004

    1. this is what i was looking for, thanks for the tips(s). i plan on trying out faceups so i'll just get myself some MSC, then at least I'll have it for later :P

    2. i saw some threats, people saying that they used water color pencils to color the doll's nail, i was wondering is it that safe to color it with color pencil?

    3. I would spray the hand with msc first then seal it when u are done, like when u give face-ups.
You should use water color pencils, they work really well, sometimes I use them to paint eyebrows.

    4. what happens if i dont spray the hands with msc and color in directly?i just want a temporary nail color

    5. It'll stain and then you'll need a Magic Eraser to get it off.

    6. .....................i shall stick to spraying MSC

    7. MSC isn't a permanent thing anyway, it's perfectly removable. It just helps protect the doll's resin and give you an easier surface to work on.
So always seal your doll. ;)

    8. I'd like to paint my BBD boy's nails a neon rainbow of colors. I have acrylic, non gloss paint and MSC to prime his hands before hand and to seal the paint afterwards. I have never used MSC before, though I have read about it. I know I need proper ventilation and I need to do it outside preferably with a mask, but do I need to do any cleaning prep before hand before I spray his hands? Also, I want to put a gloss coat over the acrylic coat to make it shiny like nail polish before I seal everything again with MSC, what kind of gloss medium is safe to use? I have an acrylic gloss medium, but I want to make sure it is safe to use it before doing anything.

    9. You actually need to seal BEFORE you gloss, or the gloss will loose it's shine. Just make sure the hands are clean before you paint, anything on them will get trapped in the sealant.

    10. Thank you for the tip! I will seal between the paint and the gloss as well. Any suggestions for gloss? Or is plain Acrylic glazing medium okay?

    11. This thread makes me want to take my doll's hands, painters tape, MSC gloss, gloves, and go experiement in my garage.

    12. I would still use chalking in many coats till you get the darkness you want spray, spray

    13. Does anyone here have any experience with using Citadel (Games Workshop) paints for doing manicures/pedicures? Particularly the glazes/washes? I have a fair collection due to my other expensive hobby - Warhammer model painting - including a very pale skintone that I thought might look good on my WS dolls, but I was wondering if anyone had tried them? They're still acrylics, obviously, so I can't see them having problems so long as the nails are sealed properly first.

Also, has anyone used acrylic inks for a more 'sheer' effect? I have a couple of pearlescent inks that I'd be tempted to try...

    14. That's such a nice tutorial. Thank you.

    15. This thread hasn't been added to in a while, but I thought I'd toss in a comment anyway since I just finished up a manicure tonight ^^" I wanted a solid black for my SD+ hands, so I used watercolor pencils, with multiple coats of MSC between layers, a final layer of black chalk pastels to even out the color (then more MSD), and finally a thin layer of clear nail polish top-coat. The color came out super even and the top-coat made it glossy but not too shiny, which is just what I wanted. I would 100% recommend using watercolor pencils and/or chalks for mani/pedis ^^

    16. I wouldn't recommend using nail polish (or most make up meant for humans) on resin, because it tends to have materials you don't want on resin for long periods of time. I've read before that nail polish eats away at plastic, and resin is a plastic after all. Of course everyone is free to use the materials they want on their own dolls. I personally prefer using acrylic paint for solid black nails to minimize the use of MSC (you odn't really need it unless you are blushing the hand, a few layers of acrylic medium will suffice), and soft pastels for the blushed parts of the hands (and body). I use acrylic gloss (meant for painting on canvas, but very much safe on resin), for more durability as acrylic tends to chip away on certain hard surfaces when there's constant friction, but I prefer matte nails so I use MSC on top to dull the glossy look. (:

My doll hasn't had a re-application of his body blushing in ten years, so you can see some of the wear at the knuckles and nail tips. He has gorgeously sculpted veins, which I also enjoy blushing as well, but I'm never able to capture them anymore. I suck. DX

They can be seen here, but this is a much older photo, probably round the time the blush was "renewed/more recent." It has held up quite well, I must say.

    18. Thank you very much, @IngieBee. Assuming you were commenting about my Mano, if not just ignore me. DX

    19. Omg!Ten years ago, Itold you I loved him,and I'm still here as his biggest fan!
Also, his hands are lovely, as is the rest of him!

    20. @IndigoFrogs, I do remember! It's cool to see there are still earlier years DoA (forum) members around, or ones that are now coming back to the forum after a break. His hands are such a pleasant sculpt, very hard for me to photograph, but that's the story of my life. (:

    21. Adding to this thread! I love hand blushing, I just wish they were more durable... :sorry Any advice to make them last longer would be very welcome!

    22. Hello! Sorry to post on a zombie thread, but it looks like a lot of good info here!

Anyone have experience with teeny tiny nails? Like 1/6 scale/YoSD/Barbie sized? I'm going to try acrylic paint with the tiniest brush I have. Any other recommendations? (Besides holding my breath!)

    23. LOL @MaleficentMrsofEvil , I can't because my hands shake too much now, but I did manage an SD, so I bet you can do it, especially if it'll be one color :)

Edit, I'm proud of these nails, so I'm showing them off, LOL. I used pastels for my nails, red in several layers, then black in several more, with a cote of MSD between :)

Pretty much just do it the same you would other sizes. Small brush + acrylic (or any resin safe paint) or pastels. Gloss is also nice to use, unless you want a matte look of course. Just take it slow, clean up any messes before the paint dries, let one layer dry before doing another, and use good lighting. If you have trouble keeping your hands steady, try supporting them on a table. And it's definitely easiest, imo, to paint tiny nails when the hands aren't attached to the doll (cause I've done it both ways and attached is a pain lmao).

Here are some I've done. Going to put them under spoilers since there are several (and there's some naked bits lol). Click to make them bigger, if needed.

I use just acrylic when I want a nail polish look.

I use just pastel or pastel as the base with acrylic as the nail tips/cuticles for more natural looks.

    25. I am by no means a professional, and I don't own a tiny BJD (I used to have a DZ BB but I sold the body a long time ago). I have however, blushed 1:6 scale female action figure hands, and also 12" male fashion doll hands before. I used pastels for the blushing and acrylics for the nails on one of them; the female action figure 1:6 hands, that are on a male fashion doll body and I gave those black nails using acrylics (because he's a vampire and meant to have black nails). On the natural nails, I just blushed them with pastels like the rest of the hand, those can kind of be seen here, they are the male fashion doll hands. I use tiny brushes, because they are very small hands with very tiny nails, but I like blushing hands the most, even if I suck at it. I still use a primer (spray on fixative), because pastels need it, if I were to use acrylics alone I would probably opt for brush on acrylic medium as a primer and top coat. Hope that helps a little. (:
