Doll elastic?

Nov 4, 2024

    1. I want to restring some dolls. Amd while I have pulled some tighter. I have not fully restring a doll. So I am now wondering where I can get the best elastic for 1/3 dolls. I have girls of 58cm, and boys of 65cm and of 70cm and 75cm. Some need new elastic in all these sizes.

      My questions:
What elastic length do I need per size?
      And what thickness?
What is the best elastic and where do you buy it?

      Thank you!!

    2. Alice’s Collections has them and they’re labeled “1/3 SD elastic string” etc, so you can pick your size. You can get elastic string almost anywhere really but if you’re not sure and don’t wanna risk getting the wrong one, that’s a good place to start.

    3. I would get a roll of elastic and then cut it as needed. For MSDs, you can measure one loop from elbow to elbow and then measure a giant loop that can go up into the neck and then bend into each leg up to the knee, preferably with the knot in the middle rather than the neck. (Not sure if this is possible with SDs or 70 cm dolls) If you want to make sure you don't do too little, you can do a little more than that and then adjust it as needed. (It's also a lot easier to measure out the loops when you have the doll put together rather than already taken apart.)

You might find that pulling it all up into the neck is better for the size (especially in the torso), and you'll need to measure one long string and gather them into four loops, two meeting the elbow and the other two making it to the knees. Of course all of this depends on the doll. Some dolls have channels in the torso or special stringing in the legs, etc.

Depending on how your doll needs to be strung, it might be easier to also measure out your new elastic against the old elastic and put it together that way, adjusting it as needed.

    4. Omg thank you for this advice! I think I'll just measure it that way when it's together. I already pulled the elastic tighter for some dolls because it lost elasticity so I don't think I can measure it that way. Most of mine have separate arm and separate body-leg-head elastics. :) but this is super helpful thanks!!!

    5. There is a thread which might have some useful info /threads/restringing-elastic-where-and-what-to-buy.945/
I am currently in a possition where I need to restring many of my dolls and seriously I didn't want to pay a massive postage just for elastic, also I was always hesiitant to use areally thick one so most of the dolls I restrung either use the same elastic they came in or something thinner that it sould which I think makes them a bit floppy, but I was lucky while I was shopping some clothes for my son and me in SHEIN I found elastic in sizes from 1,5mm,2mm,2,5mm, 3mm,4mm ,5mm and 6mm well the 5 and 6 sounded too thick for me (except maybe for lushion dahlia or trinity or spiritdoll dolce or pure) but the rest are pretty usable they are called round elastic string for jewelry but I think it's the same thing because I was always got my elastic from local jewelry material /bead or fabric/sewing materiall shops , the cost was minimal 5m of each and a total of 8euros for all with myc oupons when they will arrive I will post what I think works for each size cause I have to do restringing in dolls sized from 1/6 toddlers to EID huge girls and boys and almost everything in between.

    6. I'm one of the weirdos who just went on Amazon and ordered like 1.5, 2, 3, and went back later for 4, often listed for beads or "bungee". Despite SAYING I only want 1/3, some designs just don't come in that size so I have from yosd up to 80cm. I have dolls I restrung like a year and a half ago that are still good and I've had others where I messed up the same elastic so bad it didn't last very long. the only reason I can't give a longer time is because I haven't been in long :D
