Does anyone else compulsively look up pictures of dolls they ordered while waiting?

May 29, 2021

    1. This may be an embarrasing thing to admit, but I cannot wait for my first doll, and have been constantly looking up as many pictures as I can.
(Mostly the face sculpt, a few of the bodies.)
Has anyone else done this, or am I just weird? :sweat

    2. Ha. I'll do you one better. I look up pictures. I take screenshots with my phone. I create a Google Keep doc with all of my pictures, so I don't have to keep searching for my favorite images...

      I'm like a doll stalker.

    3. Yes!! When I ordered my first dolls (~10+ years back) I looked at their pictures all the time while waiting XD
It's the wait that makes the whole process exciting~

    4. Oh, big same. It's like, oops guess that tab's open again. Does it need to be open? Noooo not really I already ordered... but maybe if I keep looking they'll make the doll faster...

    5. I often try looking for a clear pic of the head blank and save it, then I throw it into a drawing program and play around with faceup ideas while waiting. Sometimes even run them through beauty makeup apps that have hair options. It's fun to plan. :XD:

    6. Yes I save the promo pictures to my phone and look at them when I'm feeling impatient :sweat And then follow the doll's tag on instagram and get jealous when I see other people start to get theirs lol The wait is torture sometimes! :XD:

    7. Not sounding odd to me. Since I got my first doll out of packaging I've tried my best to look up multiple pictures of all my girls before they come home. I don't have specific characters in mind (mostly) when I select dolls, but more a question, "Who will you be?" and it helps to see what others of the same sculpt look like to start to get ideas.

    8. Hahaha, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who does this! Yes, I frequently keep tabs open in my browser with the product pages of all the sculpts I'm currently waiting for. What can I say, I loved them enough to want to bring them home, of course I want to see their faces every day :kitty2

    9. I am one Sarah McLachlan slideshow away from completely falling down the rabbit hole. :XD:

    10. Oh my gosh, so comforting to know I'm not the only one! :XD:

I also think part of it is me wanting to see more of the sculpt than I can find on the site.

I never thought to check Instagram though, I don't use it a lot. I might do that now...

    11. I often keep doing it even after I get the doll, but yes, I definitely spend a lot of time looking at pictures of sculpts I love, whether they're incoming or I already have them. :D

      • x 4
    12. Absolutely! I try to find as many face ups of the doll I can and also put a blank in photoshop to play with ideas :lol:. Ive been guilty of collecting photos, but I never thought of following the dolls tag on Instagram, great idea!

      • x 2
    13. Always! I save as many pictures of the doll as I can so I can get some ideas :D

      • x 3
    14. I search them here, Instagram, Pinterest, Flickr, and google images.

    15. I’ve been in the hobby 12 years and frequently do sculpt image searches. I do this for every doll I’m thinking of getting, and just because I like looking at dolls.

    16. Habitually. with the sort of 1/6 Anime Character dolls i generally pursue, i generally get best results
when translating make, series, and character names into Japanese, and performing a general GOOGLE search under the english-to-japanese - translated criteria...

    17. Constantly! And it's one thing when you're waiting on a popular doll, but it's frustrating when there are so few owner pics of a sculpt out there that you find yourself looking at photos of two individual dolls across seven different platforms!

      • x 1
    18. Cannot even tell you how many times I have looked up "ShouShouDoll Goudan" even though there is like zero that people own so I gotta look at the same product photo many times lolol

      • x 2
    19. All the time. It kind of feels like you're in a long distance relationship, just sitting there staring like "Soon my love. Not yet, but soon."

      • x 8
    20. I’ve done that. I used to keep a lot of owner photos saved on my camera roll, although I think I deleted them for space. Generally I look for any dolls on the same body, not just one sculpt to get clothing ideas. My main target was company photos- I would set whatever doll I was thinking about, usually a full set promo picture, as the background on my lock screen.

      • x 1
    21. Lol I do that too! I like to pop pictures of the doll I’m waiting for into photoshop and plan out faceups, wigs, eyes, and outfits on it. It’s a good way to “try on” things before purchasing. I’ll mask off pictures of wigs, eyes, and clothes to get rid of the background, and overlay them on the doll picture like one of those old online dressing doll games haha. It’s very rough photoshopping, but it gets the job done, lol!

    22. Yup I do and even continue to do so even after I get my doll if I like the sculpt enough. :D

I also spam reload tracking numbers when I get them even if I know it’s not moving yet. XD.

    23. I do, mostly for bodies. It is a genuinely bad habit, because sometimes it causes me to become biased or doubtful towards the doll before I even receive it, if I find unflattering images! A couple of times I have come to the conclusion that I'll be parting with the doll as soon as it arrives,. I try to do my research as well as I can before ordering, but it's inevitable I find new photos or sth new is published during the wait time.

    24. I haven't done it much before, but now that I have been waiting over two years for a doll from Dollshe, I've been looking at pictures of his sculpt pretty often. Someday my prince will come.

    25. Yes!!! I just ordered my first doll and I have the promo pictures of her saved on my phone and a screenshot of the measurements in a notes file just in case! sometimes I'll try to find customer photos of her too just to get an idea of what she'll be like when she finally arrives :chibi
      yes...soon! :shudder
(sort of? I have mine on a 9mo layaway)

    26. I made the company photo my phone background to keep me motivated. :)

    27. I have to give a big "Oh yeah!" to this! LOL I'm waiting on one body and two full dolls right now, and keep finding myself looking at them without even realizing I'd gone to the page. :sweat

      • x 1
    28. I totally did with my first doll. I wanted to keep reminding myself of the sculpt so I could make faceup plans and character ideas.

    29. I do. And I go back and forth looking at the same exact pictures everyday. Its like an OCD thing almost. The anxiety of knowing that doll is coming and you want them to look a certain way so you keep looking for inspiration and ways you can make the doll look the way they look in the pictures you like.

    30. I always follow a doll’s hashtag on Instagram once I start getting seriously interested in them. Company/artist photos sometimes aren’t enough for me to get a good grasp on what a sculpt actually looks like, so I really like being able to see other owners’ photos with different faceups/eyes/wigs. I stay followed to them after they arrive because I genuinely love seeing what other people do with the same doll, especially if it’s a brand new release that everyone is getting at the same time.

    31. Ya caught me--I was just doing this.

      • x 2
    32. I am definitely guilty of doing this. To the point that when I was paying for Tori I had pictures of her as my desktop background.
Now days I usually just go to look at the specific listing again and again until I get the doll. :XD:

    33. I have a green ResinSoul Dai on the way and I’ve been looking at so many green dolls to see what color faceup would work for her!

    34. So I'mma stop reading doa in order to go stare longingly at my Doll Family A Max right now k? Lmao

      Big mood :)

    35. Yes! I also have to search photos beforehand as well to make sure I will really like it. It doesn't help if it's not a particularly new sculpt that people haven't taken photos of yet.

    36. Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
I do it to remind myself that I do have that doll. It was a long wait for my first BJD Dollzone Taru and I still felt the need for getting a doll because she wasn't physically there yet, so I kept looking at more dolls. I would stop myself and look at pictures at Taru to remind myself, yes, I DO have a doll.

Now that she's here, I've almost entirely lost interest in other female dolls. Now I'm looking at male dolls as I wait for my Doll Legend Yue, the cycle never ends lol.

    37. I don’t only do that all the time, but I also look at the pictures I took of my dolls all the time when I’m not home or having them out.

      • x 1
    38. I do this when I purchase a doll and I am waiting for it. Or I look up other owner's pictures.

    39. Heh, I purposely forced myself to stop looking at pictures after I ordered my MYou boy, though I obsessively stared at them before I got the courage to do so.

Mostly because I knew if I kept looking at the pictures I'd be in love with that exact face and style, but the chances of his face up matching perfectly was very low. Now that he's here and I'm still madly in love, I checked the pictures again and I was right - the expression is slightly different, but enough so that I would have been disappointed if I been keeping to a 'template'. The months long wait had dulled enough tiny details that I could enjoy my doll when he arrived rather than comparing him to an unattainable perfection <3

    40. Yes! And I have to keep telling myself to stop, because it just makes the waiting harder.

    41. Totally! I'm always trying to find all the pictures I can and stalking Twitter/Instagram/Flickr owners' accounts.

    42. I would... but the one I'm dancing around impatiently waiting for at the moment is a very, very "rare bird" limited made in 2007. You could probably count the number of pictures of them that exist out in internet-land on the fingers of one hand these days. So... yeah. 'No way to obsessively look at pictures if they don't exist.

    43. I just ordered an old girl off of Mandarake and I’m “patiently” waiting for the confirmation email. In the meantime, I’ve been looking up Flickr, Instagram, and using Wayback machine to obsess over different face ups, styles, etc. :drool

      • x 2
    44. It's not even that I intentionally choose unpopular sculpts, but it just so happens that the sculpts I like have few to no owner sculpts posted online. My favourite example is one from Universedoll where I scrolled through the sculptor's Weibo until my browser froze trying to load the backlogs and still only saw like 4 owner sculpts. It's not my fault! I wish I liked sculpts more people owned!! But it just doesn't work out that way...

      • x 3
    45. Totally-- I spend a lot of time looking at pictures and looking back at my order info when I'm waiting.

      • x 1
    46. Yes! I do this all the time. It helps me pass the time on the wait and to see what others have done with the sculpt.

      • x 1
    47. Yes very much so! When i was looknig for a volks hewitt for sale all i did was browse flickr and insta for pictures lol. Its always fun seeing what other ppl do with the same sculpt, every doll is different after all and it helps me come up with ideas of what looks good to me for a sculpt!

    48. This should be DoA's secret password.

    49. Yes! Even now that my Miwa is home, I still look at her company photos and other people's photos wondering about when my Miwa will be home, before remembering she's here with me now :XD:

    50. I try to resist, but often I look at my new dolls and feel my impatient heart skip a beat.

      • x 1
    51. I love to constantly trowel Instagram tags for faceup ideas or if I'm unsure of a doll! There's a lot of different looks and a single doll can look so different, so I'm always on the lookout.

      • x 1
    52. Yes! I’m so happy that I am not the only one. You just have to keep looking at their picture until your doll comes home.

      • x 1
    53. I'm doing the opposite now actually. Trying to avoid any pictures with the doll that is currently having a little round trip back to Korea because of customs.
It wouldn't be too hard since it's a sculpt that's just started appearing a month or so ago but I make it difficult for myself by constantly keeping track of any new pics posted of the doll company tags in anticipation. ^___^''

      • x 1
    54. I do, and I save all of the photos on my phone to look at.

      • x 2
    55. I've been checking Instagram obsessively and fawning over them for months now! I'm trying to hold back now otherwise I might start pestering the companies for updates.

      • x 1
    56. Yes, so that I can see what others style & face-up have done with the sculpt. Sometimes will find really gorgeous pics.

      • x 1
    57. YES! I scour the forums, IG and FB for as many photos as I can find of the sculpt and do this even after it arrives! I love looking at photos, but when I am waiting on a doll in particular I like to see what color wigs and eyes appeal to me most so that when they arrive I know what looks I preferred in photos (doesn't always mean I like it on my own in person though)

      • x 1
    58. I do that too. I ordered my first BJD (and first hybrid) a little over a month ago. Half of the time it's because I'm planning her outfit/wig and doing a mock-up of her faceup, and the other half of the time it's because I feel the need to remind myself that I am actually going to get the doll that I've wanted for a year now. I have two bookmark folders that I save picture links to (one for the head, one for the body) as well as two Instagram collections so that I can easily find them.

      • x 1
    59. Yes. When I first started collecting I told myself that it was silly to do that. Now I do it constantly. Partially to check to plan clothes, but also because I feel the need to make sure that I haven't made a horrible decision. I never end up feeling like that, but my brain is always like "what if?" Then like a month or two before it arrives I check both the blank sculpt and IG constantly out of excitement.

    60. Yes l do. I research and ask alot of questions when needed.
