Until a few years ago I had no real care for Disney dolls...but then I became obsessed with Rapunzel (Tangled). So I was wondering, are there any other Disney doll collectors that are also in the BJD hobby, and if so, which did you collect first? I started with BJDs, but then, I also started collecting BJDs really young - my first doll being received when I was only fifteen. Anyway, here is my small collection. Side note for fun, all these dolls were thrift/second hand store finds.
Those are super cute! I have a couple of the Disney Animator Dolls (no photos, sorry, they're packed away for a move), because they're adorable and I don't have to worry about them as much as I do the BJDs. I have Ariel and Moana so far, and will likely end up with a few more; I keep an eye out for sales at the Disney Store nearby and see who catches my eye when they go on sale.
@vicemage Thanks! I also have a lot of Rapunzel figures believe it or not...but those are my only dolls. XD Do you collect the big ones? I want a big one but I haven't come across one yet. I have a lot of the small ones (like shown in my picture above) that I found a a thrift store all bundled together. I technically only kept Rapunzel, Alice, and Lilo...the others went to my room mate but are still in my possession, lol. We don't have a Disney store in driving distance and I heard almost all of them will be closing down. It makes me sad as I just now started collecting last year.
@Shai yep, I have the big ones I live a pretty short drive from the Mall of America, and it's my go-to place for playing Pokemon Go (which I've fallen off on playing lately, really should get back to that). My time playing there tends to get punctuated by poking into various stores. I hope they don't close the one here! It's been there forever, it'd be really sad to see it go. Edit: Aw, man, I just found the list and it's due to close this month... I'd better go make one last trip.
I do/did! This isn't all of them but it's as many as I can fit on these shelves there is another row behind almost each of them. These are the 17 inch Limited Edition dolls from the Disney Store, made and meant for collectors. I have been collecting them since 2010. If you can't tell, Frozen is my favorite! I have slowly been not caring about them as much lately, but I am still attached to some of them. They are beautiful dolls!
@vicemage Oh no! I really want to get a big animators doll before they close but I don't think it will happen. @I<3MySD Oh, I'm jealous. I want some of the Rapunzel ones but have never been lucky enough...and second hand prices are too much for me.
I also collect the 17in Limited Edition Disney dolls plus one 12in Hades (not as impressed with so sticking to 17in moving forward)! I really enjoy them, the team behind their designs really do try hard to make them in the likeness of the characters and do the outfits justice. I am very fond of them, even deboxed my Frozen 2 Elsa to play with her articulation(many of the Disney LE collectors leave the dolls firmly in their boxes). I might get the Volks Elsa bjd whenever she comes out and would be interested in a Belle if they made her too.
Ha! Just looking at my profile you can probably tell I've been obsessed with Disney/Beauty and the Beast lately but unfortunately I don't have any Disney dolls yet. But I did start off with Living Dead Dolls and wrestling action figures which then lead me to Barbie and finding the collector Disney dolls and BJDs. I was actually thinking about making a post about the Volks Disney dolls since I haven't found a lot of info on them.
I'm actually currently eyeing those Animator dolls. I heard they can share clothes with big babies and that's currently my favorite size so I really wanna get an Animators or two to share clothes. And have an excuse for more big baby clothes. XD I'm eyeing Mulan or Lilo but I also saw some people putting their heads on an articulated body before and I really wanna find out where to get those bodies.
@Cap'n Lilo is adorable as an animator doll, her skintone might be hard to match though. I have a little one but I really want a bigger one. I'm thinking of buying one before the Disney Stores close down juuuust incase they go up in price. Now I kinda want one to dress up, lol.
I collect the 17 inch limited edition dolls as well but I took a break on buying them once I got into bjds. I have some of the other designer dolls and other smaller dolls too.
I just noticed that Amazon has a few of them for around $30 and they qualify for prime. No Lilo or Mulan but they do have Pocahontas.
I was always tempted by those Once Upon A Zombie dolls, but I never found them in stores near me. When I remember they existed, they were too overpriced for me to try and get any (online). I collect a lot of dolls, Disney (Store) ones are not the exception for me (sadly). Although, I don't own as many as Fashionistas Barbies, nor a lot of the collector versions (none of the latter, so far, but if I ever see an Alice I can/willing to afford). I own a few of the basic Disney Store ones, the first release Frozen Elsa, because she' my favorite sister, and it was the first doll I liked based on her. I also own 1st release Kristof and Hans, I did a repaint of the latter because he's my favorite character from the whole film, but found the doll not as accurate as the girls. I own 17" singing light-up Anna, I thought she was the basic doll, which I didn't get while she was in-stock, but then got as a Disney Movie Rewards, thinking she was the basic version -- I still don't know how I made that mistake (not that I mind). I own 1st release basic Merida, don't know which version of Snow White, which I always wanted because I find her to be the most beautiful looking-princes and the DS doll based on her is pretty accurate, IMHO. Also Eugene, but no Rapunzel, I want one, but I haven't seen a version I really want to own. I am hoping to get Mulan, Pocahontas, Ariel, someday when I'm not actively hoarding other figures/dolls. I always hesitate with those, because I feel like the first two always get too big of a head. Although, I have heard/read adult collector people don't like it when fashion dolls have smaller heads -- I used to believe it was because it was more appealing to children, but I later learned Mattel gave Barbie a giant noggin in more recent years, due to adult collectors complaining her head was too small (I have always thought it was too big, but then I collect 1:6, so maybe I'm biased). I also hope to get Wendy, and Esmeralda, before they get discontinued -- I did managed to get two Alice, who is my favorite Disney character, but I never got her Animators version, sadly. I own the Animator dolls of Mulan, Aladin, Eugene, and Kristof, but I hesitated to get Alice because I suck. I love Alice, and wish I could get more dolls based on her, but I don't always like all except for the Japanese stuff. I got the officially licensed Bandai Capchara Heroin Doll gachapon in the pastel version, but I would like to get the original color as well one day (Disney is overpriced as is, but then the Japanese stuff gets stupid expensive for what the toys actually are). This are the repainted versions of the ones I got duplicates of: Macoto Takahashi inspired Alice repaint; I have since removed the glitter from her dress. I want to restyle her hair a bit as well, but I'm scared to remove the plastic tag holding the headband in place. This is the gachapon/gashapon I was referring to above: My Hans repaint; I wanted to mod the eyes at one point, to make him more accurate, but I don't trust myself modifying soft-ish-vinyl (it seems too thin).
I have a few Disney Store dolls and some older (20+?) ones from when I was a kid that I recently cleaned up. They're mostly hanging out on my shelves with my other old barbies and such. I've thought about getting the nice collector set ones (especially the Elsa+Hans set and the fashion/masquerade ones), but I don't have the shelf space to display them nicely atm. And I need to save for Volks Elsa.
Yay! I love this thread! Big yes on Disney stuff... I have gathered a few smaller Disney dolls over time (sounds like quite a few of us are Tangled fans!)... and then one day when I was in the Disney Store saw one of the 17" collectors dolls of my FAVORITE character Moana. It was fate. I don't know that she was ever even online?! I also have some Star Wars dolls... action figures... of Han Solo, Rey, and Kylo Ren. I think it counts now since Disney owns them.. lol... I did get all those in the Disney Store.
I collected the Disney dolls back in 90s. I still have a lot of them in a box stored away. They were so much better sculpted than the modern ones in my opinion. Majority of them are Aladdin. Jasmine was a very popular princess back then, she had so many versions and I think I have nearly all of them from that era. Man, I feel old now.
I don’t have any at the moment but I’m keeping my eyes peeled for the release of this year’s limited edition dolls. And I’m hoping that someday I’ll find someone selling the Megara masquerade doll at a price point I can afford. She’s my favorite and there’s so little merch for her.
That's kind of why I bought the first one I have, I liked the big baby aesthetic but not any of the actual dolls, and thought maybe a $30 Disney mermaid would scratch the itch (it did!), they're a fun size and really cute (@Shai, your inbox is full and I have a PM question for you )
@Enzyme I always wanted a Once Upon a Zombie as well but never wanted to pay the online prices either. I got reeeeeally lucky finding her at a used bookstore. Alice is actually on ShopDisney.com right now! I have the mini Alice animators doll and she is soo cute. Sadly she's pretty expensive for some reason, but the big one is like $30 still. Also! For Gacha I shop via ToySanta on Rakuten. It's gotten a little harder to shop there because they can no longer ship overseas and you have to use a proxy but they have all the Disney gacha usually and you can buy them separately.
@Shai @Enzyme I remember Once Upon a Zombie I had Snow White and Belle when I was younger.( No Idea where they could be though.) They were really hard to find too and the only ones I ever saw in person. Its a shame I thought they were cool. The last time I heard of them they were making Alice In Wonderland but that was years ago.
I really love those dolls that are themed after park attractions, though I haven't bought any. My Disney collection is mostly non-doll, though I've got an Elsa I'd planned to repaint one of these days.
Whelp, thanks to getting warned in here about the Disney Stores closing up, I have two more Animators dolls. I picked up an Elsa and a Jasmine this afternoon; if the store's still open and they still have stock after my next payday, I might swing by for one or two more...
I was eyeing the tiny Animators Alice as well as the figurine one, but I missed those as well. I was checking the Disney Store Online (I don't have a brick and mortar near me) just recently and the 16" one wasn't in-stock. How convenient that now that I can't afford her, she's actually in stock? Lol! Thanks for all your suggestions for getting Japanese Gachapon, I certainly don't need to hoard anymore stuff, but I can't help myself (it seems), when it comes to Japanese figures. (: I wish they hadn't discontinued the Once Upon A Zombie dolls, they were really cool but a pain in the gut to find in stores for sure. I did see they had an Alice in the works, but never found if they did release her. I wouldn't mind getting her, even if a bit overpriced.
@Enzyme I know that pain! And lol, welcome! I'm an enabler, what can I say? I have a ton of Japanese Rapunzel figures myself soooo...I can't help it Japan Disney gets the best stuff but it's so hard to get. Even their prize and gacha figures are amazing. If it wasn't for ToySanta and Surugaya I wouldn't have most of my collection (that's right, cause even my stuff from Japan is second hands, lmao, I'm cheap). But one of my Grails is the Volks Rapunzel. I've seen her second hand for over $1500 and I just cry every time.
A little birdy told me that Esmerelda is coming soon in 17" form. I'm pretty excited for her! Hoping a Megara follows suit. I have the masquerade Megara but the 17" ones are my favorites.
As a big fan of Esmeralda and Megara that makes me very happy to hear. ( Even though I don't have there new Disney store dolls yet for some reason.) I hope they make another Vanessa doll since Ursula is one of my favorite Disney villains.
I got my first non thrifted doll (figures not thrifted) and she has my favorite face! (upper right) Yes, my Rapunzel collection is a bit much, lol.
I collect disney animators! I think those were what got me into big baby bjd. Now my house is overflowing with big babies
I have a couple of Attractionistas, Pirates and Haunted mansion. I really wanted a couple more but we never got a chance to go back before I moved. I’m at work at the moment but when I get home I’ll take some pictures. Thought it was a really cool idea to turn the rides into dolls
So...I have my first animator doll, found at a store called Ollie's. They only had Belle, but I couldn't not take her home.
The Animator dolls are so cute! I can see why people collect them. I only have one, baby Moana. Could not resist.
So they've started selling Disney animator dolls at Target. O.O My Target had Rapunzel, Jasmine, Aurora, Belle, Anna, Elsa, and maybe another few I didn't catch. My SO got me Rapunzel even though he thought Anna was the cutest, lol.
Did anyone snag the 3 Disney Hocus Pocus dolls? They were limited to 5,000 each at $130 each. I read that they were released just this morning and that they sold out in 13 minutes? I saw the email for them this afternoon but they apparently were long gone before that. eBay now has a ton of sellers selling them so apparently there wasn’t a limit on how many each customer could buy?
I saw those hocus pocus dolls announced a few weeks ago and honestly am not impressed. The faces annoy me. And for $130 each you can get a custom Monster High or other such doll made by an artist to look like those same characters (and those would actually be OOAK). Or focus on your favorite character and for $390 (aka the price of all 3) you can customize a bjd to look like one. I'm all for collectable dolls but that price point was way too high for them. Also I hopped in the Animator dolls train! Got the newer Moana that doesn't look like the movie toddler. So far I adore her. His anyone seen the new ILY 4Ever dolls? They're AG sized dolls with Disney themes but rather than be Disney characters they're more like Disneybounding! The Elsa themed one is black and the Tinkerbell themed one is Asian! You have the option of dressing them to more align with actual Disney princesses but it's refreshing how they did them. I love the Ariel one but I'm disheartened to learn that they changed her eyebrow design between the official release and the prototypes. The prototypes had her with one eyebrow different from the other, which they did do on the Minnie Mouse release doll but not Ariel.
I just got took a look at the ILY Forever dolls and they’re cute! I think my fav is the Frozen one. I’ve never seen them before and didn’t know they made them! On the Hocus Pocus dolls I would have thought they would have been like $50 each. I was surprised to see that they were $130 each. My fav character is Mary and she would be cute bjd custom!! I don’t have any Animator dolls yet but some of them are cute.
I have to comment because Hocus Pocus is my favorite Halloween movie and I agree that those dolls were not up to snuff. I would have loved to get a Winnie one but $130 for a doll that looks vaguely like her and comes with plastic props? Forget it. I am definitely not going to pay ebay sniper prices either.
Yeah, I love the Hocus Pocus dolls but NOT at that price point, it feels ridiculous for what they are. (desperately want the Binx plush, though)
I will take one as soon as we start decorating! He is 15 inches tall as stated on the website but the hat makes him quite wide. I can take a picture of him next to a ruler or one of my dolls if that will help for scale.
I also have a small collection of Tangled dolls! I have a few that were made around the time the movie came out, when Mattel still had the licensing, and I have the Fairytale Designer Rapunzel and Flynn set. And some little vinyl figurines my friend gave me for Christmas a couple years ago. I'm sad I missed the anniversary special release doll, though. She went so fast! I also have the Ariel doll they released last Christmas, and I really want the 17 inch live action Cinderella doll, but it's hard to find and usually quite expensive now.
Yay Rapunzel collections! Mine kinda grew fast...there is more to it now, lol. Almost all my dolls are second hand, though, so I don't have any of the really nice expensive ones.
The designs of the 2021 Disney limited edition dolls are bad. The only stand out has been Kida. I was expecting a better anniversary Alice that could match the original release.
@Masteryoda I finally took a picture of Binx! He is hanging with my two MSDs who were also needed for some comparison photos.
I've recently fallen into the Disney Animator Doll collector hole and this has been brought to my attention. It's a BJD body for Disney Animator doll heads!
I used to collect 17’ Disney dolls too but they unfortunately had a very bad quality drop in 2020 and after I discovered bjd dolls I’m not as interested in them anymore
Has anyone else seen the pics of the new Merida collector’s doll? I love the outfit but I feel like the proportions of the head and body and the makeup are just…off. It’s driving me nuts because I’d buy her in a heartbeat otherwise.
Has anyone seen the NEW ily 4ever dolls? The ones that seem to match Barbie in proportion? Do you think their clothes could fit some of the mature mini lines of BJD? Like Soom Mini Gems or Myou doll?
Oh my gosh those are ADORABLE and I want them. However, it looks like they'd be a bit too big for the 30cm Myou dolls. These seem thicker than Barbies and Barbie clothes are already a little big at times. I had a Myou Bettina with the large chest and even then Barbie tops were a bit too big.
I have seen them as well, and they are quite tempting to me, as I find their faces beautiful (just to keep in box). However, and like with most Disney stuff, I find they are a bit overpriced for what they are. Then again, I have trouble justifying 25USD for a Barbie Extra Doll (I own four so far, all of them I got on clearance at different points last year), and those come with a lot of stuff I'll never use, so who knows... I'm weird. DX I doubt they'll go on clearance, since they are Disney (too many fans/collectors/scalpers), but if I am able to justify one or two, I might get one or two, in the not too soon but not too far away future. I prefer 1:6 action figures, and though I am willing to purchase mass-produced fashion dolls on clearance prices, I still would rather save that fashion doll money towards scale static or action figures. Since shipping from Japan/Other-Asian-Countries is so expensive right now. I am already hoarding too much anyway, so maybe if I find them on sale one lucky day (from the Disney store online, since I don't have a brick and mortar anywhere near me anymore!), I might get one then. (:
I love the ILY fashion dolls. I went nuts and bought all 6 of them and 8 outfits. I saw a video on YT by pancakeboss trying different clothes on them and they can share with my Momonita from what it looks like. I have quite the wardrobe for my girl and hoping all the outfits I got will work on her as well. I will update once they arrive. I had two Myou dolls and the stuff I have for my Momonita fit them pretty well, yeah some things were big but I was able to make everything I put on them work.
