So... I keep hearing about these horror stories from people who bought from DoD; the black lips. The fact that the lips can melt due to the heat sensitive gloss. How common is this? If I find out it's more common then I hoped, I may not order a doll. It's a risk I can't take at this rate; I don't have five other dolls to cuddle--nor the money associated with them to buy a new one. Is it worth risking it and ordering one? Did they change the gloss? Has DoD DONE anything about it?
I've never heard anything about that. My friend has a DOD and she hasn't said anything. Personally, I dislike the way DOD lips look. So maybe if you didn't get the face-up, it'd be alright?
I have a DOD shall, and I take her out and about all the time. I've had no problem with her lips or anything. But I never leave her in a car or under a window, I don't know any sensible BJD owner who would. all I can say is I haven't had trouble and my Shall is in great condition.
That was back in 2006 when it happened alot. My DoC Wi's lips turned a dark gray and I had to remove his face-up. But otherwise, nothing else happened- I think they have good quality dolls myself, sometimes it takes a bit for them to get it to you, but it used to take way longer when they sanded the seams.
Well, I don't know how to do faceups personally, so I'd have to get it. @Princess: I read of a problem like this from late Feb. of this year. Are you sure it's mainly settled now and very, very, extremely rare?
I received my Shall in Jan, around that same time period. I think it's settled and pretty rare for it to happen. If it does, contact them, and I'm sure they'd help you out.
I haven't seen any black lip problems from DoD in a long time really. That last one in february was a Luts one, I believe. My Homme Ducan has a brown face-up from back in December of 2006 and his lips are still fine.
That's great. So, seeing I'm ordering my doll this week, do you think it would happen? I mean, it's my first BJD, so I'm kind of nervous. Do you suggest any methods of protection maybe, at the least, to make sure it doesn't happen?
oh really? Wow, I didn't even know there were anymore cases. About I think 6 months after my boy's incident, DoD said they were changing gloss and shouldn't be a problem. There are many talented faceup artists here in the US you could send him to if you don't want a DoD faceup, you don't have to limit yourself just to them.
Really?! Wow, that's great to hear about them changing the gloss! Just what I wanted to hear. You guys have really settled my fears a little for my new soon-to-be DOT Sha. @_@;
I had heard those horror stories too... right after I ordered my boy. .^^ Needless to say, I was very paranoid for a long time. But I've had him for over two years now, and have never had any problems with his faceup. It gets really hot and humid here in the summer, and still nothing's gone bad. A friend of mine has five DOD dolls, ranging from a year and a half old to just a few months old, and none of them have ever had any problems either. Between us, we have a lot of experience with DOD dolls, all with default faceups from the company, and... yeah, no problems. No sticky, no black lips. Nothing falling off or falling apart. So... I'm actually rather inclined to say those that did have problems may have been flukes....
My DOT boy is from last month only and believe me, its freakin hot over here for the past few weeks! No issues with gloss or anything. I believe that funky gloss was caused by a batch of bad gloss by the gloss company.. good luck on gettng your boy ^^
The problems weren't flukes- trust me. Hunter's lips did turn a dark gray. 0_O It may be because of where i live- it gets very humid sometimes. ><
I recieved Kotori in October. Her lips are still beautiful. and she's been outside a fair few times. I do have to say, Do not let your doll get near any heat, leave in a place where it gets hot, etc. It will ruin your doll D: As long as you keep him/her out of the sun, and out of hot places I think he/she will be fine.
Yeah, humid weather isn't good for dollies. Like I said this was mainly happening 2 years ago, so everything should be fine now. (the case this year might have been isolated also, since I was surprised to hear about that one)
I have 4 dolls from DOD the oldest is a little over a year old. I've never had any problems with their lips or anything else. keep my dolls in their bags/boxes when I don't play with them, since I have large windows in my house and we get lots of sunlight. I take them outside fairly often and I haven't had any changes to their makeup (and I live in a desert) I think your doll will be just fine
Worst that's happened to my three year old DOC's faceup is that the eyebrows rubbed off from wear (had them redone) and she has a chip in her lip paint. No black or any funny gloss stuff. My U came with a default faceup too (that I had removed since I wanted a custom one) and there were no problems with it, either. Black lips aren't the end of the world, anyway...I like custom faceups much better than DOD's anyway (I have four DODs and only one has default faceup) and there are plenty of people on DOA, probably even some local to you, who can do lovely faceups should DOD's faceup end up not being the greatest.
Naw, I own 3 DOCs, my oldest being almost 2 years old, and their lips are just as when I got them. The only thing I have noticed is that one tiny bit of an eyebrow has chipped, but it's too small, nothing to worry about
i live in Houston which might as well be the surface of the sun. I have a DOC and he's done amazingly. I actually bought him from a girl in Mexico so I imagine that they can take the heat well.
I bought my doll recently from DOD and he's has no black lips yet. ^^ I hope that doesn't happen, I mean, he's not going for the goth look. >>;;
I love DOD dolls, I have two of my own [plus a head] and I'm going to order two more soon. Personally I think their dolls are great quality, pose well, look nice even after yellowing [my boy is over a year old and he's yellowed a bit, but I like how it looks, and it's not UBER yellow or anything.] and their face ups are great [Satsuki and Arlene both have company face-ups. The only thing I don't like is that Arlene has a bunch of glitter in her face up. D: I'm considering wiping her clean and doing it myself, but I really like it, apart from the glitter...] As for the faceup if you DON'T like DOD's work, I need practice doing faceups and wouldn't mind doing one for free if you paid for the shipping and such. [I understand if you don't want to though, as you don't know me or anything. :3 I just thought I'd offer. And I have a few images of the face up I've done already I could show you if you are interested.] Either way I hope you enjoy the doll you end up buying; DOD or otherwise.
Ooooh. For some reason I thought you meant the website. o_o Anyway, this I'd like to keep tabs on because DoD is definitely on my wishlist. ^___^ (E-an, E-an, E-AN! )
I had no problems at all. I got a Ducan in Jan of 07 and he's fine.. I take him everywhere too and he's still perfect though I just recently wiped his face and had him sent off back to DOD for a fresh default face-up due to me taking him all over his face up worn off a bit.. I also have another Ducan which I bought second hand which is around the same age and even came from florida a few months ago when I bought him. the person I bought him from took him everywhere too and he's still perfect and hasnt even yellowed and his face up is still perfect. No black lip problems for me ^.^
I had my Sha over a year and his faceup was perfect. Lasted a whole year, even longer, until I decided to take it off and get his face redone. lol. And my Luke Ver. 2's I've had since February 6th and his is still amazing! And my Sha's new faceup is also VERY amazing now. I've never had any black lip problems.
I've had my Too for almost a year and he's still wonderful. His faceup was done by DOD and it's still excellent.
I personally haven't had any issues. My oldest is 3 yrs old. I've had a few over the years and no issues. It seems that the black lips issue came from a specific time frame. I do know one person who had this issue and DoD asked to have the head shipped back and redid the head for her free of charge since she had gloss issues the first week she had the dolls which is not typical of most DoDs. One the whole the percentage of issues is small, but it really is disheartening to have it happen. Combination of a bad gloss batch and typically high humidity/heat or sudden and drastic temperature/climate changes can affect dolls and their faceups. My suggestion is to keep an eye out on your doll right when you receive it and if anything happens shortly after poke DoD right away. Typically they're pretty good about things like that as long as you don't wait.
Of all the doll companies, DoD seems to have the worst reputation for photoshopping their pictures, and bad faceups? But that's just what I've read, which kind of sucks because me and my friend picked them out as the company we'd buy our first dolls from, but now we're not so sure. :\ Is it just personal preference? They seem to be held as poor to photograph.
I'm not sure about them photoshopping images, as I've never heard that, but I think they photograph well. Obviously you can't just snap a picture and get a masterpiece [I think that goes for any doll, over all] but I've taken some pretty good photographs with nothing but plain in door lighting and a camera. I don't have dolls that AREN'T DOD, so I have nothing to really compare it to, and maybe I'm biased, but I really like their dolls. [The next two I'm getting are from them too. :3] As for faceups... I love my girl's face up, except there is randomly glitter all in it. I'm not sure what happened there but it really makes me want to wipe her clean and do something myself. And my boy's is really nice too, but I'm sure it's all about personal preference as fa as faceups are concerned. May I ask what doll you and your wife were considering? If I have to doll I can give you some completely unedited photos of them if you want. I don't know how much that will help. Even if you just want to see the difference from my H. Ducan [w/ default face up] to their images I can get some faceup closeups in some good lighting if you want. [I'd say the same for my E-an Arlene, but her face up isn't default but peach.]
Pah! If they're poor to photograph, that is the photographer's fault for lack of skill. Yes, DOD does shop their photos most horrendously, but if I were you I would find the database threads of the molds you like and see how they *really* look. Personally, I think DODs are beautiful dolls. And other than the eyebrows which were redone due to the previous owner almost rubbing them off due to wear, I don't think this is a bad faceup at all: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kwanboa1/caromature7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/kwanboa1/caromature6.jpg And the faceup on my DOC Leya would be, now, three years old. DODs don't photograph well, they say? They need to learn how to work their cameras.
Hmm! My friend and I were going to get an E-An for me and a Camine for her, but all the bad feedback we saw was making us mildly nervous. I did look at the doll database and didn't see anything wrong with the photos of the sculpts in question there but was worried that maybe I was crazy, or there was just something intrinsically wrong with DoD sculpts that I *couldn't* see as a n00b. D: I should trust my own opinions more, ha ha, clearly. Thanks for helping out, both of you, I appreciate it, and sorry for taking so long to reply, I work long hours at the bar many days a week.
My Too has the default faceup. I bought him used (i'd estimate he's about 3 years old) and it's still amazing. I think they have some of the nicer faceups next to Luts. At a meetup, lots of people were complementing it. ^ ^ As for photographing, the only problem I have is with lighting. He tends to look washed-out but that's more due to my crappy camera skills than anything. I only have DODs and they are my favorite. DOD may photoshop their photos, but their dolls are hardly lacking in any way. They are very lovely. I highly reccomend DOD. I am such a fangirl. XD
I love DoD very much... I have two boys from DoD - Conaire (H.Ducan) and Larkin (Sha) and both have the troubles with their lips. (((
I have a question. I heard from some people saying that the quality of the resin for DOD doll are not as good as it used to be. Is it true. I would like a point of view from DOD owners, cos i am really kin to get T. E AN.
I have two DoDs (Camine and H.Ducan). I've had them both for over two years and I've never had a faceup problem. I've moved house, I've taken them to meets and I photograph them regularly and their faceups are fine. I also think their default faceups are gorgeous. But anyone concerned about excessive shopping on the official site should take a look at the owner databases here on DOA, as suggested by others. I admit I sometimes have problems photographing Rook (Camine), because he has that "starey-eyes" thing going on, but I approach it as a challenge to take good pics of him and avoid the "stare". My boys are heavy, so the resin isn't thin and the quality is excellent. Of course, my boys are older, so I can't comment on recent resin batches from DoD. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend DoD dolls to anyone.
So far so good~ No black lips at all! DoD is a very caring company. I've communicated several times with them via their Q & A board - and they sure know how to make you feel like your special in their replies. Just like their dolls! They are not difficult to photograph! In fact, I find it difficult to stop taking pictures of my two DoDs. They photograph well even with my old old digital camera ^^ Here are some 'raw' images. The only thing I had to edit was the size: <-- super large file ^^ They haven't yellowed. It's just my room and the camera setting I was using. ^^ Yup, I would recommend dealing with DoD to everyone.
Oh cool! I was thinking of getting a SD after selling my Luts ANI... Dun want to get dolls from Luts anymore... personal reasons... I was told that DOD make their doll when order and they do not keep stocks so i was quite attracted by the 'freshly make' idea (if i am wrong pls tell me). Singapore owners dun recommend DOD i wonder why... lolx But after reading most of the review and owners comments, i hope i am lucky to get a nice doll without my mother knowing lolx
Well during their previous Valentines event, my sister and I got two of the dolls. When they arrived they looked fine and stuff, I didn't play with my twing-key instantly I let her stay in the bag. About a week later when I was taking her head off so I could give it a faceup it practically flew off cause the resin in the neck was thin making the the S-hook ripped through it. That caused the neck to have chip/ larger opening in the head. When I contacted them about it, they kept trying to refer me to how to disassemble and to reassemble a body. I tried to get the point across to them about 4 times that I knew how to take a body apart and how to put it together, even sending them photos of the damage done due to the thin resin. After all that I just gave up since they weren't going to do anything about it and were trying to not understand intentionally. Now the older DOD they have nice resin, etc. I love my lil Too. 33
I was a bit worried about this, as I am SO afraid of trying to finish my dolls when they get here for fear of messing them up somehow. Do you have photographs to show this yellowing, by chance? Or, perhaps even just your own personal recommendation on if DoD dolls should or should not be finished? I was going to leave mine unfinished, but I suppose it all really depends on just how much of a color difference we're talking about. D= I assume your doll isn't bad at all? Will they yellow even more over time? I'm sorry for so many questions, I'm a newbie trying to figure all of this stuff out before my dolls get here. XD;
Mine is over one year old, it is definitely NOT uber yellow. It is a nice not too pink skin color still very pale. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=228704 Here, the head is from Jan 08 batch and the body (look at the hands/arm) are from April 07. The color matches and the body is definitely not yellow. The body has been out in the sun 4 times in the past year (each time about 20 min tops)
Thank you for your reply. ^^ You're certainly right, he doesn't look yellowed at all. I will have to seek out a thread for this subject to research it further, I don't want to go off topic for too long in someone else's thread. XD Thanks again!
I think DoDs yellow pretty elegantly, to a more natural color if you ask me. :]; Here my Camine's hand is (from 2006) compared to this year's DoD pink resin.
I have three DoD dolls, and i have to say I'm very happy with them in terms of posing and quality. One of them has a custom face up and the other two their default one (although on lip the gloss is chipped by an honest mistake of my own). However when I received my MNF from luts I was surprised at how much lighter my Shiwoo is compared to my Petsha. And also the resin of the Shiwoo was at the ears quite thin. Although I love the mold I still liked the quality of my DoD dolls a bit better on that specific they look more sturdy. The weird thing however is that one of the dolls is owned by my mom. That doll stands in the living room. She is more out and about than my own dolls but for some strange reason instead of turning yellow as you would expect the resin gets a more pinkish hue to it. Also at a point I had an issue with an order which was solved very correctly and quickly by the people of DoD.
