Rules DoA's 7th Anniversary - IMPORTANT STUFF

    1. We're excited to announce that we will soon begin our 7th anniversary festivities, but first we would like to take the opportunity to remind members of our conduct and timing guidelines. In many ways, this notice is identical to last year's, however, we do have a few new points to note. The most important parts are in bold for those who tend to skim.

      Getting the serious stuff out of the way first...

      Contests are open to all members who are in good standing who have joined on or before the date of this posting - June 30th, 2011. We apologize to anyone who may join after that date, but these are community events that are intended for members who are already participating in the community. This year we are also making a change to the general contest rules - Moderators, Virtues, Wiki Angels, and members who have won large prizes in past contests may participate for fun, but they are not in competition for prizes.

      The events are intended to be a good time for everyone, including the staff. We are taking the same stance as last year regarding poor sportsmanship and general bad attitudes - complainers will lose access to the Anniversary subforum permanently and will be disqualified from all contest participation.

      If you have a question about a contest's rules, please ask prior to the close of submissions. We're human and do make errors, so we are happy to clarify rules or correct typographical errors. However, complaining after the fact (especially during/after the voting period) will be grounds for disqualification. We had some of this last year and it was a real downer to both the moderators and some of the winners. If you miss a deadline or break the rules, we do not want to hear that it was because something was "unfair."

      By the same token, please be aware that Den of Angels is a US-based forum. As such, contest deadlines reflect Daylight Saving Time. Ending times will always be in EST (or more specifically, "EDT") as DoA is "headquartered" in New York state. If timezones confuse you, we recommend using a timezone converter and giving yourself a few hours to spare with your submission.

      In the spirit of good sportsmanship, please do not try to get your fellow contestants disqualified on petty technicalities. It was a bit disheartening last year to see certain contestants frequently PMing the moderators to try to get other entries removed from competition. If an entry is up for voting, then the moderators feel it meets the contest's specifications; please only contact us if you know for sure that someone is cheating, whether by breaking rules or soliciting votes off-site.

      If you should win a prize, please take a moment to PM a moderator to confirm receipt... and please remember to thank the company or individual who donated the prize! Last year was slightly better than the year before, but to our surprise and dismay, neither the forum staff nor contest sponsors received any communication from a handful of last year's winners. This is quite frankly embarrassing to us as a community; if winners can't take the time to say thank you to our contest sponsors we will no longer organize contests of this magnitude.

      On to the cheerful stuff!

      This year's theme is "Me and My Shadow."

      We will have a handful of exciting DoA-specific items this year, news to come!

      We have tentatively planned 4 major contests and will be posting further information within the next few days. We will post an announcement in News when the contest descriptions are available.

      We have a big first prize for each contest, but we are still accepting donations for runner-up prizes. If there are any companies, reps, artisans, or generally talented people who would like to provide gifts for runner-up prizes. We will give out every prize that we receive, either by grouping small donations into little "surprise bags" or giving more substantial gifts on their own.     2. I am super excited that there will be more contests this year! I had a great time with the Triathlon last year, and I hope I have time to participate again even if I'm in the "just for fun" class. :)
      Will definitely come up with another donation too!

    5. Although I didn't participate (other than voting), I got a HUGE kick out of seeing all the creativity and skill and humor everyone put into the entries last time. It was just a joy to look at! I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with this year--both those coming up with the ideas and running the challenges and those who enter!!! :D :D :D

    26. Oh, wow! Another anniversary already? DoA sure is aging gracefully. ^_~ I had an absolute blast seeing all the creativity abound last year. I was much too much of a silly recluse to participate, but perhaps I'll manage to this time! I really, really really like the theme - kudos to whoever thought that up, it's brilliant IMHO. :whee:

    34. I'm so excited! Just saw the events, and I'm very pleased there's going to be another triathalon - I had a lot of fun participating and seeing everyone else's work last year. Trying to decide if I want to enter any of the other contests too....there's really a large range of skills that could be used in these contests. Very very good job, mods, virtues and admins!

      gives them the opportunity to participate in the community too. I know
      that Armeleia wasn't to going to host at all but I'm glad she changed her mind! ^^

      Second: I'm sorry if this is posted somewhere already, but where are last year's rules? Perhaps a link to them in the 'official rules' would be good if it's not already up there...:sweat

      What constitutes 'soliciting votes off-site'? Can I post a link to my entry on my Facebook page and other social networking sites saying, 'please consider voting for me on DoA!'?

      What about on my webpage?

    40. This is a perfect example of what is not allowed. The entries for all of the contests are posted anonymously, that way people will vote based on which entry is the best... rather than voting for popular members or their friends.

      Posting on other sites to ask for votes or even to identify which entry is yours is against the contest rules.

      Specific rules for each contest are in the contest threads. :)

    41. Will non participators be able to purchase this year ( and mabe previous years) t shirts? I saw the t shirt designs last year and I am so sad I wasn't a member then to be able to purchase one.

    55. Silly question, but what happens if the same person qualifies for more than one prize? Do they get all those prizes, or will the mods allow them to choose the prize that they like, and then re-figure the other contests? This is my first DOA anniversary, and I want to know how I should spread out my votes, especially since I won't be entering several of the contests (video editing? EEK!) :) Thanks in advance!
