Every time I'm waiting for a BJD, I make sure to give them a theme song. Not one really has anything to do with their characters, but it's nice to have a song that makes you think immediately of your bjds.

Hmmm, my dolls' theme songs usually end up as whatever song I was listening to on repeat when I was giving them their faceup, which was usually whatever song was then stuck in my head... The result is a little weird, but these are the songs that I consider my dolls' Theme Songs because they make me remember the doll/face upping the doll XD

It's very interesting question, wish i could answer it.
How do you understand this is the proper song for a doll? Do you switch on the radio and waiting the sign from somewhere? Or do you think your doll should love the song that you love? Or maybe you open itunes, look at the face of the doll and wait for a hint? If she/he fell down from the shelf during the Beethoven Moonlight Sonata- ok, let it be her fav.song?

So, if it's possible, can i add a question to the topic starter's question- What's you way to find out the songs for your doll family?

Oh my goodness yes! My iplehouse special edition Stella, whose name is Carmen. I dare anyone who is an opera fan to look up that doll and tell me that they don't hear bizet's toreador song in their head.

 

They have favorite genres/bands, but I don't know about favorite songs. Hmm, let me think... I'll have to do two or three per character/doll.
All of these are theme songs for the character, unless otherwise specified.

I know it is the "right" song when I have the strange feeling that's talking about my character... that is obviously impossible (i.e. "Soulforged" is about a Dragonlance cicle character, Raistlin) but it happens!

 

Because it is said that his creator liked the anime "Prince of Tennis", my Nobility Doll Ryoma's song would probably be:
Across My Line - Ryoma Echizen Character song by Ryoma [Junko Minagawa]!
But that's not the real deal, rather it's:
Kimi no sei - ADAMS (This Ryoma happens to be named "Adam", too.).

Almost all of my dolls have a theme song, or songs that just fit a time in their story. Some of my dolls have multiple songs! I find their songs just by listening to my iPod or the radio and I just realize that it fits my doll's situation, personality, etc. Here are just a few examples:

This is kind of an odd question, but I am working on a concept for my doll and keep having a song kind of... link itself to her. This happens to me a lot with projects, particularly dolls or costumes, while I am thinking about their character. I was wondering about other people's experiance with dolls and music. Do you feel like your doll has a particular taste in music or a theme song?

 

One of mine has very specific musical tastes that he's really into... Pete's very New Wave.

Vince is really more open to anything, as with clothing and styling. Like, he has favorites, but his personality is open to all things. But his theme song in terms of what I choose for him is The Magnetic Fields' 'The Dolls' Tea Party', first and foremost. That's not so much about what his character would listen to, and more about my relationship with him, and the fact that he offers me this world of dolly fun and make believe (and tea parties!).

 

Gonna nerd out here and admit that all of my dolls' theme songs are Zelda songs xD

I picked the song for my Tripp because it seemed to suit her concept (she is going to be a poisonous pixie girl) I was listening to it and it just kind of clicked for her. So Tripp's theme is going to be "The Scorpion Sleeps" by Rob Zombie and White Zombie

For mine....
Scaramouche's would be "Bad Girl" by the New York Dolls. She is, after all, a deva from New York City
Tempest's is "Change In The Weather" by Love Spit Love. Perfect for a storm deva.
Zephyr's is "American Girl" by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. She's the youngest of the devas and left the midwest quite disillusioned by the older devas she was apprenticed to, knowing there had to be something better than whet they were doing.
Paisley's is the Replacements' version of "Jungle Rock." She works with animals.
Kira's is "Down Under" By Men At Work. Because she comes from Australia - and that's what everyone asks her.
Aura's is "Wonderland" by Big Country. She and Paisley are both from the Findhorn Gardens in Scotland. They helped the humans turn a desolate seaside trailer park into - well, wonderland.
Fawn's is "Fly" by the Church. Although she also makes me think of "Sweet Child of Mine."

I also think of "Sisters," also by the Church, as being Aura and Paisley's song.

(And one of my OT dolls took her name - and love for the color pink - from the Psychedelic Furs' "Pretty in Pink.")

Nayeli loves mostly rock songs but will listen to almost anything, rap and hip hop being where she draws the line. Her favorite song is "A Favor House Atlantic" by Coheed and Cambria.
And my girl on the way, Lecia, already has a character in place. She's strangely (for her) into EDM and dubstep. Her favorite songs are "Clarity" by Zedd and "First of the Year (Equinox)" by Skrillex.
Both of them also have affinities for epic instrumental music and play "classical" instruments. Nayeli is a pianist and Lecia is a violinist.

 

I think Erin is more drawn to electro-swing genre it's hard to narrow a song for him though, maybe Diablo's Swing Orchestra- Tap dancers Dilemma I can totally imagine his character working to that swinging beat.

What a brilliant idea! I've done theme songs for my videogame characters, but never for my dolls. I've got to try this now! If I think of a good one, I'll post it.

 

I don't have these dolls, but I already have a theme song for them. It is obvious why.
Prometheus by SickTanicK for Granado Uranus. His name and character would have been Prometheus if I bought him.
And 2 other dolls I want are on my list to buy.

Their theme songs are:

Lucifer Rising by Inkubus Sukkubus for Ringdoll Nair. His name and character will be Lucifer.

Now I am getting more dolls, I am finding new favorite songs for them! It's a bit harder because my reploids are based off existing characters but this is my idea for them:
X: Too Long -Daft Punk
Zero: Interstellar Strut -Tupperware Remix Party (TWRP)
Vile: My Violent Heart (Pirate Robot Midget) -Nine Inch Nails (this is the version from Year Zero Remixed)
X is the hardest to think of, I definitely think she would like Daft Punk, and also mellow, slightly sad things like Stars.

 

My dolls absolutely have theme songs, mostly because their names (and to an extent their personalities) are inspired by songs.

Alistair (DoD Elf Kirill) has a confident, slightly cocky look on his face. When I opened his package the song "Geno" by Dexy's Midnight Runners popped into my head. It became his theme song.

Chloe (Bobobie March) is on her way. She's a very lighthearted and chipper sort, so I picked "Mr. Blue Sky" by Electric Light Orchestra.

Johanna is just a floating head for the time being. She also has an Electric Light Orchestra song as her theme. Hers is "Do Ya." The Who's "Can You See the Real Me" also fits her, since she has a split personality.

Guinevere loves to dance. Her theme is "Barefootin'" by Robert Parker.

And strangely enough, one of the dolls that doesn't yet reside with me has a theme. Ylla's theme song is the only one that I didn't choose. She's a character from The Martian Chronicles, and her theme is "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes." The artist is not important to her; she just loves the song.

 

I am slowly building a tragic little playlist of mostly Brand New songs for my Qinzhe and Meng He (well, I don't have Meng He yet, but I will some time this year). In particular, I just can't get "Millstone" out of my head. I might do a photoshoot to its lyrics someday. "At The Bottom" also keeps capturing my imagination. In particular the line "Some men die under the mountain just looking for gold, some die looking for a hand to hold" gives me all sorts of feels about Meng He's character.

 

i plan to make playlists for my dolls when i get to know them better! i never thought of giving them tastes in music though, so thats a good idea too! something to think about!

I’ve listening to BORNS’s album Dopamine for the past few days. For my doll Mizuki’s character, I’ve been entertaining the thought of reincarnation for a while, and listening to the song Past Lives kind of set that part in stone. His partner BJD (whom I have yet to order shakes my wallet like a terrier with a rat) goes hand in hand with him and the song.

It’s a pretty bare bones story as it is right now. I’m still trying to decide if I want their current storyline to take place in modern day, with them as literal reincarnations of their past selves, or if I want to write about their past lives. I’m really attracted to the aesthetics of historical Japan, so that’s what I’m leaning towards most heavily.

What about the rest of you? Did you pick your doll’s song solely because it suit their aesthetic? Is there a significance to the story you’ve written for them (if there’s a story to be had)? Did you stray at all from your normal musical tastes to pick a song that would fit your doll’s personality specifically? Did you have the story fleshed out before you listened to the song, or did you base their story around the lyrics? Or did you maybe pick a song based on just one line?

That was a lot of questions, feel free to answer all or none of them, but I’d love to hear about your own processes!

My favorite singer is David Bowie and I always think of his song “Kooks” when a new doll joins my little family. But I think all my three main dolls have a favorite Bowie album for example my Bernard’s favorite is “Diamond Dogs”, my Verona’s favorite is “The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars” and my Raphael’s favorite is “Young Americans”. But I think all my dolls have their own favorite music haha. Now I need to decide some music for my other 4 dolls.

My dolls doesn’t have any theme songs but I feel like my two luts dolls would have kpop ballad song while my Volks doll (also named Mizuki btw) would have an older jpop song with a bit more beat.

 

"Origins" by Imagine Dragons is perfect for my Edria - Eloise and my Daisy would be "Love You" by The Free Design. :-)

I think it'd be a classical piece rather than a song, either Mahler's 2nd symphony or Chopin's second ballad. A large part of my doll's character is that she's made of opposites that seem difficult to reconcile, and both these pieces have these very strong oppositions between blow-your-brains-out auditory violence vs. soothing, calmer movements/passages.

 

My doll, Iplehouse Chase as Sephiroth... obviously he has several theme songs: Sephiroth, One Winged Angel, and Birth of a God. All from the game, Final Fantasy VII, but my personal favorite is One Winged Angel Advent Children version.

 

I can perfectly imagine my dolls with a theme song each one. It is a great idea.
I'm sure Kerli and Edgar would share something like 'Meant to be' by Bebe Rexha because they're all about letting things flow between and around them.
For little Nelliel it would probably be a kid's song from a tv show or a movie, and my anthros maybe instrumental pieces but I haven't given it a proper thought.
But I think it is a fun exercise that may help you bond more with your doll or get to know them better.

 

I don't know about my other dolls, but Kurt's (Humpty-Dumpty) theme is definitely Herbie Hancock's "The Egg". Kurt is a jazzy little ovum.

 

Chaeri has lots of music associated with her, but her "main theme" is a very old song by an Australian group called Frente!. It's called "Girl", and the quote "a girl is a verb" is the first line of that song. The whole thing suits her personality perfectly.
