Do you trust your doll to stand?

Jul 19, 2016

    1. I have Lunnula from Fairyland and she is standing so well! I also have Rania (EID) from Iplehouse who also stands great. But I was wondering if I should trust them to stay standing? Do you keep yours standing or use a stand? I am still pretty new with bjds and would value some opinions as I would hate to see anything happen to my girls.

      Thanks!

    2. nope. I don't trust my dolls because I live with cats, plus anything can happen while you're not watching. if they did happen to fall then they could easily chip their face, or paint, or put a crack in the resin. Mine usually sit or lean against something in a way that I know they won't fall. (Or they hide in their boxes)

Considering how pricey this hobby is, I would hate to risk it. But that's my opinion (also my dolls don't tend to stand the best haha)

    3. Ya it make me nervous to leave them standing. I don't have pets (except fish) and I don't have kids but it would make me sick if something did happen. So would you trust a doll stand? And where can you get good ones? I am not sold on the Iplehouse stands.

    4. I don't have any stands myself, but I would be inclined to trust them (as long as my doll was deep within my shelf so they wouldn't fall off the shelf... But I'm a paranoid person haha)

I've been tempted to buy some of these stands from Alice's Collections but I just need to stop spending all my money on dolls so I have enough cash to spare haha.

    5. My doll doesn't stand at all ^^ I don't know if he's kinda defective because of being from an affordable company or I never strung him correctly... He is always sitting down in one of the furnitures of my bedroom or in my bed

    6. I keep all my dolls sitting! Admittedly, this is because a couple of them definitely need some restringing because they do not stand well at all, but I also worry about what could happen while I'm not there. I buy a lot of doll furniture, so I sit them down and do a little posing so they look more natural.

It's not that I have pets, or that people come into my room a lot, but. Well, you know how sometimes things just fall without anyone touching them or doing anything? That happens a lot around me, and when I think about it happening to my dolls...

    7. Currently I keep all my dolls sitting either on a shelf or in my doll cupboard! Mine are all definitely too wobbly to trust standing, and I'm pretty paranoid about them falling. I'm waiting on a doll stand though, so I might be able to trust them standing once I have that! I'm not entirely sure how sturdy those are though, but I think they're pretty good.

    8. Oh man, absolutely not. He's always been a little floppy, and being 70cm doesn't help at all. He stays tucked away on his butt in the closet until the day I have the time (and the guts!) to restring him.

    9. That depends. The larger ones I leave standing, but leaning against the wall. I'll also add that they stand on the floor so if they did fall, they wouldn't be falling a great distance. No one has toppled out of their place yet. I do worry a bit about the cat, but she's old and fat and not very interested in resin, plus there's currently a small storage box in front of them with a couple of projects I've been working on, so that makes it impossible for the cat to get to them right now.
My 1/4 doll always sits because she's really bad at standing.
The 1/6 dolls can stand, but they're cute sitting in one of the shelves on my desk hutch so that's where they are. :)

    10. It's not the dolls that deserve your mistrust. It's the cat. I have one too and she has worked out the dolls get about 1/3rd of my total attention and she wants that 1/3rd for herself, in addition to the 3rd she normally gets. She's already responsible for knocking a doll to the floor when I had it standing on my project bench unattended for ~30 seconds; so my dolls live in a glass cabinet where no furry little floor creature can get them. The glass cabinet also offers a bonus feature in that if a doll should ever fall over, it'll only ever go as far as the glass pane.

Despite best efforts, still get cat hair inside the cabinet and all over my doll's clothing, though. :/

    11. I don't trust mine to stand, though I've heard Ringdolls are good standers. I think it's a combination of his stringing and his incredibly impractical outfit.... He does stand well with a doll stand, though!

    12. I am still so conflicted. My Lunnula is standing so beautifully. and she show's so well in her current pose. But after hearing your warnings I think I might find a new pose with her sitting or lying down. I would be devastated if something did happen to her. Thank you all for your replys. Hope all of yours stay safe. :3nodding:

    13. Has anyone used the Alice Collection stands? I'm awfully curious about them.

I keep my dolls in a closed off room away from kitties, so sometimes I'll leave one or two standing. Most of them are sitting though

    14. Not all of them, no. My MSD-sized are both quite sturdy and can stand well with their feet shoulder-width apart. My DoD dolls, however, absolutely do not stand unless they have shoes on, and even then I think they have to be wearing boots (because their ankle joints are such that they just fall over right away orz).

My Volks SD13 girl also won't stand on her own but that's less because of the sculpt and more because of her outfit!

    15. The only two- legged, human-type dolls in my crew that I keep posed standing are the "big people" (My EIDs and Spirit Doll pair-), and even then that's only because they're kept behind glass and (very) snugly posed in a way that gives them support not only from the cabinet walls but also each other. Everyone else is kept sitting or kneeling because I don't trust ANY of them to stay up indefinitely. Even a wired and plivered doll with perfect stringing can still tip over, so better safe than sorry in my opinion.

    16. Not at all because mine just crumbles. Sueding might help, but even then I wouldn't trust while I wasn't there. Not unless she was in a display case or something.

    17. I too am curious about these stands. They look very interesting. I would like to know how well they do for EID size dolls.

    18. I haven't tried one myself, but just looking at the construction and guessing the weight of those stands, I suspect an EID would pull one right over. The thin, plastic base and flexible post would be hard-pressed to support the bulk of something that size, even if the clamp would fit around them.

    19. Mine can stand, but I prefer to display them safely in a seated position in their glass fronted cases, on realistic in-scale chairs and a vintage bench. A couple of my crew are seated on the top of one of our bookshelves, with one occasionally lounging on our dresser. We have cats, so safer that way - both for the resins, and for the felines. : ) I do have one large doll stand for the rare occasions I want to display someone in an upright pose (usually for purposes of a photo shoot).

    20. My husband is amazing at making anything I challenge him with. I might just see what he can come up with for a stand.

    21. I bought two of the Alice's Collections stands. One is a bit taller than I actually needed for my tallest dolls, but it works well with skirts that have a lot of volume because you can curve the post well away from the skirt. They do not tip over. The doll's weight keeps the base from moving, and the waist clamps are adjustable to hold various size waists firmly. Another plus is that the clear acrylic clamps are not as visible as metal clamps.

My main problem is that the curve of the post takes up a lot of room on the shelf. Another problem is the assembly, which has a screw on the bottom. I don't know if I put it together wrong, but I can't get the screw completely recessed into the base, so the base wobbles slightly and I'm afraid it will scratch my furniture.

The one I bought in MSD size works perfectly to hold a Dollmore Ballerina Kid. She can pose on pointe on one foot without any problems whatsoever.

    22. I never trust my dolls to stand on their own, I have alot of tall sds with high centers of gravity who masters of leg crumpling face plants :sweat

I've probably owned at least 10 different kinds of bjd stands and so far my favorite is the reliable saddle stand like so : 1/3 Doll Stand
I've ordered saddle stands off ebay for cheaper but the problem is the bases are always smaller and for dolls with giant fantasy feet those bases don't cut it.

I've also tried this stand: BJD Accessories, Dolls - Alice's Collections but really I wouldn't recommend them. They aren't strong enough for heavy resin dolls and forget doing midair poses with any of the heavier 60cm + dolls. I ended up useing mine with my dollfie dream and it works great with her light vinyl body.

For msd size dolls I find that you can totally get away with useing these cheapo wood based waist grabber stands : 10" Wooden Doll Stand | Hobby Lobby | 158196

@vermont chick regarding the alice collections invisible stand mine is wobbly too. It seems like it's just cheaply made. I always feel like I'm going to break the connection point while bending the arm around.

    23. Totally made me laugh! But hope your dolls are okay!

    24. I don't trust them to stand by themselves without me there to intercept, so they sit when they are 'stored'.
I'll trust some of them to stand while I'm taking photos, but that depends on the body and if I know they just stand well or they love to flip and topple over...

    25. I leave all my fairyland dolls standing. One stood there for weeks with no problems. FL doll are very stable IMO. BUT if it is a limited sculpt or a faceup you wouldn't want to replace I wouldn't risk it.

    26. The only doll I leave standing by himself is my Iplehouse nYID boy, because he has a wall to lean on. Everyone else either sits in a chair or is secured by a stand. I would never trust any of my FairyLand dolls to stand alone, especially girls in high heels. Even my F60 boy, who was rock solid when he arrived last September, has loosened up to the point where I don't trust him without a stand.

I once posed several Iplehouse SIDs together without stands for a group photo. It was supposed to represent a fancy dress ball, and you can't position dolls close enough to look like they're dancing if all are on stands. One lost his balance and they (and my backdrop) all went down like dominoes. Never again! These days I'll photograph a maximum of 3 dolls together without stands, but I'm always ready to grab anyone who looks like he or she is about to topple.

@-T2P- I use those cheap wooden base stands for most of my smaller dolls. They do the job.

    27. I trust one of my dolls standing, but only when I'm taking pictures. My cat loves knocking stuff down, so I dont dare letting him stand when I'm not there. :)

    28. Only if they feel like it ;). Seriously, I wouldn't leave mine standing unless supported properly. One heavy truck or a sneaky cat can send them tumbling.

    29. All of my SDs remain seated when on display--- I don't currently own any doll stands and don't want to take any chances. My hybrid girl that's on a 5Stardoll body is the best and most stable at standing out of the big dolls I own, and I've never seen her fall over when I'm posing her freestanding for pictures. As a matter of fact, I'm constantly impressed at some of the stances I can get her to pose in with no support! But even she doesn't ever get left standing on display. I just don't feel like it's worth the risk. Stuff just falls sometimes. Especially when you have two bulldogs that like to chase eachother and wrestle and are also heavy and clumsy and prone to running into/shaking the furniture during playtime! Hence why my dolls tend to only sit on display on the mantel or on a built in shelving unit in the study--- they're much more secure on shelving that's part of the structure of the room.
Eventually, I'd like to design and build custom stands for each of my dolls, so I can make the bases heavy and sturdy enough to feel secure and also so I can make each stand themed to match the doll it holds. Once I get around to that, they'll get to do more than sit.

    30. My husband "modified" my stand from Iplehouse so I can use it for my larger dolls (SID & EIDs) but we have been discussing what materials we could use to make better stands. As I said he is great at making anything I challenge him with. Think we just need to take a walk through a few building centres. He also welds so we are considering a pure metal stand with welds and a larger diameter base (Iplehouse's are too small for my doll's large feet). Love to see what you come up with the Darkstar13.

    31. I trust my dolls to stand but can't trust them to make me a sandwich though I have asked repeatedly for one.....

    32. I have three cats so, ... not a snowflakes chance in hell! Mine are happy sitting.

    33. Actually! I don't have any EIDs, but I do have a big soom boy and a 74cm DC boy, and both of them are held up quite well by these stands. The poseable "wire" part is actually quite sturdy, to the point that it's a little difficult to move/bend. The only tricky bit is balancing the doll over the base so that it's not overbalanced to front or back, but after that, it'll certainly hold, and even that's not too difficult. Just make sure to get the largest size.

One word of caution about these Alice's Collections stands though: they aren't padded in the back, so don't put a doll in shirtless or there might be scratches.

    34. Only when I'm taking photos - although I've trusted my Fairyland dolls to stand in some dangerous places (on a rock, on a tree branch) when talking them. And my poor beautiful DollsTown girl can't even be trusted to stand on her own without crutches - even wiring her didn't make her steady enough on her feet for me to feel comfortable.

    35. Having two DC guys of my own and a fair few Soom SGs in the crew... That's not a good comparison. EIDs are quite a bit heavier than either of those types. Even as tall as they are, DC's guys in particular are relative light-weights.

    36. I have a little shelve, so i just can put them sitting, but they survived standing in photoshots, for now they are stored in their boxes because I am afraid or earthquakes u.u. I just have a dollfie dream in display.

    37. Dolls are like baby fawn. They may be stable one minute but you turn your back and they crumple like paper. Can never trust them XD

    38. I trust my Fairyland dolls and my Iplehouse girl to hand but I definitely wouldn't leave my Soom dolls alone standing specially not the older ones they have always made me nervous, plus I have four cats and a dog and none of them can be trusted of course I lock them out of the room when I have my dolls out.
I kinda want to invest in stands, but I keep them in a big dresser instead of out in the open so I always convince myself to buy them other things. :)

    39. I trust some of my dolls to stay standing better than others, and it also depends on what shoes they're wearing. Still, I only have them standing for photo shoots or while I'm right by them. They all are sitting when displayed just to be sure. We live near Fort Knox and often just the vibrations from their practice shooting and explosions shakes our house enough to send a less than sturdy doll falling! The only doll I ever leave standing is a 14cm off topic plastic doll on top of a chest of drawers. If she falls over, she won't be damaged.

    40. I have two dolls that are solid standers, but I would never leave them standing without some sort of solid stand. You never know when something could bump your doll, or bump the surface they are on, and I couldn't take that kind of risk.

    41. Totally depends on the doll, some of mine stand very solidly and others won't do it at all. But I'd never leave a doll standing out of my sight for long, lol! If they're good standers, I'll leave them up as long as I'm nearby. cx

    42. My dolls are almost always in their boxes or sitting in my closet, away from my cats and dogs. I don't trust certain dolls to stand in general because I know they are not going to stay up, but I may stand another if I feel brave. I would never leave a doll standing unattended without a stand to support it though, because you never know what could happen! Any bump or movement could knock it over and BAM, face cracked! Where I live, we have earth quakes very often (so often, one may happen and my friend and I might not even pause or notice it) so I feel like I have to be especially careful!

    43. Sometimes, my doll falls down due to the stand :c and there are some times my cat would jump on the table and sit in the middle of it, making my doll to fall down. unu

Now, I usually let them just sit on my table ovo since it's more convenient and safer that way!

    44. My dolls are all on stands from Dollmore when they're stored in the cabinet. Many of them stand pretty well, but I wouldn't trust them for extended periods.

    45. many of my dolls stand well but I always stand them with them leaning slightly back so they are touching the wall. Once that are not solid standers sit. :) I have never had a doll fall over with the standing leaning back a bit (knee not bent at all).

    46. My doll stands great, but I wouldn't leave her standing unattended. I have cats that jump all over the place so that can be a disaster. I either have her sit, or I place her in a doll stand, which is the best thing I've ever bought, I freaking love that thing haha

    47. I trust my dolls to stand, their stance is pretty solid, but I honestly don't trust myself or my boyfriend NOT to slightly bump into the dresser when getting stuff from the drawers ^^' - so all bigger dolls have stands to support them.

    48. I would never leave my dolls standing unattended unless they were on a very soft surface, like my bed or a thick carpet etc. It's not because I don't trust them to stand, but because anything can happen and I'd rather not risk damage.

I definitely didn't used to have this mentality though. I used to leave them standing on my desk when I went to college or on a bench in the garden when i went in to get a drink. But then at a meet, surrounded by doll lovers who all jumped to get him, by boy who was posed just for a photo, got blown over onto concrete. Luckily the damage was minimal for the fall and surfaces but it was still enough to make me think twice about leaving unattended dolls even if they're sturdy.

    49. my resin no I don't. my smart doll is the only one because she is able to stand with no problem and if she does fall she wont break. I made a bed and they all sit on it in my cabinet

    50. No, I wouldn't trust them to stay standing and when I have display cases for them they'll all have stands. Some stand pretty decent, but you never know when something will shift ever so slightly and cause them to fall. I had an Optimus Prime figure standing on top of my dresser for two years when randomly one night he fell and his leg busted. He was an anniversary figure made with metal parts so he didn't land so gracefully. I would never put my BJDs in that situation after having that happen :sweat

    51. No, especially not a resin one! I once left my vinyl doll standing on a table and it didn't take too long for her to fall off.. luckily no harm done.

    52. No. Ever since we had a really bad thunderstorm that physically shook the house, took down a shelf of BJD in my doll room, and resulted in knocking a good amount of them over, it is imperative for my own peace of mind that they are secure either with a good doll stand or are already sitting. I have good solid standers but you can't control external forces.

    53. Yes, but I'd rather have them sitting, just to be safe.

    54. I absolutely trust them to stand while I take pictures, but I wouldn't put them on a shelf then leave.
sometimes they stand solidly for several minutes then suddently collapse, seemingly without reason. But we have to remember that the elastic is always pulling on them and so the joints probably continue to move a fraction of a militer every minute or so, until it's moved a bit too much to hold its pose anymore.

    55. No, I would always hold his back... He has fallen down for several times and it scared me.

    56. Absolutely not! The only ones who get left "standing" are the AD dragons who have basically no difference between standing and sitting, and the FL hippogriff, who is very stable... And he still sits more often than not.

    57. I've left my Loongsoul girl standing unaided for months. She's a rock. I feel a little bit like I'm playing with fire there but she's the only one that I can confidanty leave standing unaided. The rest of my dolls, I do leave standing but generally close to a wall and only for photo shoots.

    58. Right now I am using a modified stand for my Sloan (SID Stella from Iplehouse) but next to her I have Tristan (EID Tedros from Iplehouse) and he is standing great without a stand. I do have them both against a wall and he has his arm around Sloan but so far so good. If something does happen I am sure I will regret it but for now I like seeing them show off their outfits this way.

    59. Some of my dolls are very sturdy and will stand like a rock, others take a ton of fussing and silent prayer and even then will only stand for a brief amount of time but I wouldn't leave ANY of my dolls standing unattended. There's no reason to take that kind of risk, there's no benefit in it and the doll is almost certain to fall eventually (especially if you have pets, kids, or other people in the house). There were a lot of stories back in the day of people thinking it was safe to leave their dolls standing on a table or shelf or whatever only to have the doll fall and break their fingers/nose/ears/whatever. I don't know how common that is these days but when I'm not doing anything with them, my dolls sit.
