I talk to my dolls all the time, but I also talk to my plants, my computer, my sewing machine, my toaster... Mostly I casually comment on whatever is going on. I may tell a doll to behave if the pose slips, I may compliment or critizise their look when I try something on them, I have on many occations heard myself apologize to them when accidentally bumping into them when organizing their shelf. If I'm having trouble coming up with an idea for an outfit, a face up or something else like that, I do sometimes sit the doll down in front of me and ask it what it wants. It's a good way to focus on what the doll represents and playing around with what the doll would answer. Often, what they "say" guide me in my decisions. (Funnily enough, though, I do have two problem dolls. One is a quiet type who just doesn't like to ask for stuff so she doesn't help much. The other is a guy who always wants big and extravagant stuff that he can't have and he is never happy to compromize.) I don't often sit down and talk to them as if they were people, but I do sometimes play out conversations between them in my head to help with character developement.
I just kind of curse at them when I’m trying to dress them and they’re being difficult about it. Or when I’m trying to take photos and they won’t hold their poses. Like why won’t your arm stay where I put it?
I talk to basically everything I collect, not just my dolls! My plushies are the things I talk to the most, though. Inanimate objects can't interrupt me or change the subject on me. ;w;
Absolutely If they're going to cost so much, they better listen to me! It's really a daily routine. I might chat with them a bit when I wake up in the morning, when I go to sleep at night, when I lose matches in video games.. They're good company.
I'm very chatty with my dolls, mostly when playing/posing/dressing them, but since some of them also hang out at my desk when remote working, I have been known to talk with them for no particular reason (they make much better coworkers than most of my human ones, that's all)
I love hearing that people do chat with their dolls. For the most part, I do not talk to my dolls (except in my head) but I sure do talk to my pets. It sounds warm and kind.
I tried talking to them, but I feel silly, especially when a friend comes over and wonder whom am I'm taking to. So I quit, I guess the dolls doesn't mind.
I definitely talk to my dolls. I work from home in my basement office. My girls rotate positions so one of them is always sitting at my desk with me and the rest sit on their bookshelf. I’m always venting and complaining to whomever is sitting with me. I talk to my dogs as well.
I talk to them in my head not out loud it feels awkward to me but no shame for others who do talk to their dolls out loud
Oh yeah 100%, I often apologize for the awkward positions I have to put them in when I dress them or scold them for not being cooperative. I also talk to them when I'm stressed or had a bad day, they're like my little resin therapists
Yea. Especially when posing. I’m like “can you just cooperate for just a few minutes?” “Ugh why can’t you let me put these pants on you” stuff like that haha
Yes... I think it's a habit I picked up from talking to my plush toys. Not sure if I would want my dolls to reply though.
Oh yes I do lol when I'm dressing them or doing there wigs I be like 'come on Yumi or say come on now Kikyo and I swear sometimes with Xyla about dressing her cause she's hard headed lol..think she's a nudiest cause seems she don't like clothes lol
I talk at them, not to them. Mostly chastising them for all the clothing ideas they put into my imagination and no time to bring it to fruition.
I talk to my dolls in Japanese. Talking to them in English feels so unnatural. Maybe because my character dolls are Japanese? Not sure why
I do! Mostly while I dress or pose them for pictures. It's usually telling them not to fall over or complaining though.
Omg all the time! My dolls sit on my wfh office desk and I talk to them while I work lol. Just like mundane stuff or even work related frustrations. I'll even make sure I pop in and say hello on the weekends too! I can't get it out of my head that they'll be sad if I don't
I have a variety of dolls in my craft space, which is my own personal space, but it is home to my BJDs. I comment about them, mostly, as my boyfriend enjoys my 'kiddos' too, or at least he enjoys how happy they make me as I make plans to develop their characters; I tell him who they are, where they've been and where they are going. He has a great eye when I need a second opinion! I talk comforting to the tinys as they are so young, cute and adorable. They get a bit jealous to see how much attention the SDs get. I sometimes drop in to the library where the Compos have their home to say 'hi' and admire them as 'the girls' have been with me longest. They are a bit neglected these days, but still quite sweet.
Yes, I talk to them all the time whenever I interact with them. I even talk to them just to talk to them. Sometimes, my partner wonders who I'm talking to, and I just point to the many dolls we have around the house. It helps my ADHD to get out what thoughts I have, it helps me when I'm upset, sad, lonely, it helps me to settle down when I'm having a hyper moment, and even to concentrate when I'm doing something precise. Of course, I talk to them when posing them, photographing them, dressing them, doing maintenance on them or sewing for them as well. But to be fair, I also talk to my car, to the cats and to my plushies. Ryu
Yes, usually by way of an apology if I am holding them in an undignified way! When I carry them about, as I can only carry two at a time, I usually inform the others that I am returning for them. If I knock one over, I ask if they’re okay and apologise. This sounds kind of crazy when I am writing it, but I have always ‘talked’ to my childhood bears too. My husband once adjusted my doll’s skirt as it was all tucked up when she was sat on the mantelpiece and he said her butt would get cold!
I talk to a lot of things, and my doll is no exception.. I know he can’t talk back, but it’s definitely out of habit for me to have little conversations with inanimate objects and animals. If he’s being particularly fussy when im trying to pose him I will scold him a little bit ;^_^ but usually I’m nice lol. When I take his wig off to mess with his eyes or change his faceup, i like to apologize if his bald head gets cold :b
As a kid I used to role play but never talked to them as individuals. Now I talk more freely to my animal dolls than human dolls as I talk to my cats, bees and anything else. I sometimes bring dolls to my hubby to talk about them instead of directly talking to them since I’m not accustomed to talking to dolls. Sometimes I talk to dolls silently in my mind. Occasionally I greet or talk to them aloud. I hope I can talk to them more openly in the future!
I definitely talk to my dolls! I hardly have full on conversations with them, but for me it's like... levels of conversation, if that makes sense? Real human people, full conversation. Even if some folks at the nursing home I work at don't understand or understand but can't answer verbally, it's always better to talk to them like everyone else. Both for things like telling them what you're doing and just for manners' sake. Pets. I know they can't understand most of what I'm saying but sometimes they respond back and it's a fun way to play to just pretend you're having a conversation with them! Dolls. They're shaped like little people! I give them backstories! They have personalities! And if they fall over because I set them down wrong I always apologise. Or I ask them what they want to wear. Or instead of talking to myself if I'm "thinking out loud" I'll talk to them. Fully inanimate, non-human-shaped objects. Ngl, I definitely apologise to my car every time I hit a pothole. But that may just be me! It's a nice feeling, even if it may be a little silly.
I do but I talk to all inanimate objects and animals So not conversations but I will definitely go "oops sorry" or "ok let's try this wig" or "can you stay put and not fall over so I can get this shot please". Stuff like that. I do the same thing with cars - pat the dashboard or the hood and be like "thank you for starting today" (lol)
Sometimes, but I feel like mostly my 'talking to them' is 'talking for them'/role playing with them. Because they're all representative of characters I'm writing with varied personalities I find it helps to explore dialogue styles/story lines/etc. sometimes.
I talk to my dolls more than I would normally care to admit. I especially get vocal while dressing them because i struggle so much to get clothes on them lol. I've even played board games with them... They always win :'3
I never talk to my dolls. I don't really see them as living objects or pets. But I do tell them "sorry" when I accidentaly bump into them, but yet, I do that with every non-living objects I bump into (last time, it was a door) so I don't really see this habit as specific to this hobby.
I never used to talk to my non-bjd doll collection while setting them up for photos but with my bjds theyre so lifelike and cute that I can’t help it! Lots of compliments when they cooperate with their posing and an “oh crud sorry” when I set them up wrong and they fall over lol.
I do, I also talk to just about everything. If I drop a pencil on the floor I'll yell at it to 'get back here'. Same with all other inanimate objects. I do talk to my dolls a bit more, while dressing them I might mutter, 'let's get your little hand through the sleeve' or while taking pictures 'that's it, hold that pose, just a few seconds, hang in there' or 'now why did you have to go and fall like that?' or if I'm walking past I might pet them on their heads, and mutter something to them, while fussing with their hair. I might tell them how sweet they look, or that I'm going to take pictures of them soon, or something like that. I don't have full blown conversations with them, but I do mutter at them quite frequently.
Not a lot but I live with a lot of people so I'd be mortified if someone overheard me talking to her lol I do occasionally squeal at how cute she looks though!
I sometimes say a little hi whenever I see one of mine-- like if I'm going into my room for something, one of my boys is in his box but visible, or if I'm getting something that's next to the carrier a couple dolls are riding in. I think I talk to my dolls more since the loss of my cat. I'm used to talking to him, and even though I'm still living with family at present (thanks pandemic) so I'm not totally alone, I am lonelier. Especially when I'm on a nocturnal schedule and I see less of the humans in the house, I just find myself greeting them, calling them cute, etc.
For me... I guess it's kind of an anomalous thing? What I mean by that is—I'm kind of random when it comes to what I talk to. I do have conversations with my cat, and have spoken to my fish on a few occasions (mostly things like "hi" and "how are you?"). I also tend to yell or snark at inanimate objects when they misbehave (like "stop falling on the floor!", “hold still!' or "please behave!"). When it comes to my resin crew, it more oftentimes the latter than the former. "Keep your hands to yourself!" if one gets handsy while being handled or during a wardrobe change. "Behave!" it one is giving me particular trouble while posing. "Aren't you being sassy?" if/when I receive a particular look from one of them. Maybe the occasional "aww" if a couple is caught in a sweet pose together, or "is she behaving/being cute?" if my cat happens to be sitting or laying down next to them. Mainly things like that. There may have been an occasion, two, or more where I have had an actual (short) conversation with one or more of them, but I can't currently recall any specific occasion where I've done so. My resin crew is made up of OCs/existing characters, but I tend to think of them as existing in a different reality from my own where neither interact with one another. I'm an outside observer looking in, so to speak. ( I don't think of them as being alive, for the record. It's more so that I imbue the characters they represent onto them—including their personalities, relationships/interactions with one another, and stories tied to them. I guess it helps me with developing their characters/stories further.)
Sometimes I do, mostly when I finally have a quiet moment free from work and I am happy to see them. Or when I dress them up and they will not cooperate lol
Short answer: Yes! Not just complaints when they don't cooperate, but also apologise if I don't feel like I've given them the attention they deserve, ask them if there's something they want (like going out for a photoshoot, getting new clothes or perhaps it's time for a fresh face-up) and sometimes talking with them is how I get inspired for new dolls because they "tell" me of a friend of theirs. And like many others, I also talk to other inanimate objects (like my car), my pets and well.. even just air XD
all the time, yes! but to be fair i’ll talk to pretty much any inanimate object compliments, complaints, and apologies if i knock them over
All the time. I used to talk to my dolls a lot when I was alone, now I talk to them less but I am also getting them back out in the open after five years of keeping them in boxes. Right now I'm working on retooling all of their characters so I can have a cohesive story to take photos with again.
I talk to my dolls... but only recently I noticed how I talk to them. I ask them questions - sometimes rhetorical, sometimes not. And usually while making eye contact with them. "How are you doing today?" "You're looking grumpy/happy/satisfied/naughty today, y'know?" "You gonna stand/pose for me?" (I think I ask this the most - and while looking them in the eye) "Can you please stop falling over?" "Will you stop fighting so I can get your clothes off/on?" "You look unhappy. You really don't want to wear this, do you?" "Do know how annoying you are to restring?" "Do you know how cute/gorgeous/handsome you look right now?" "You really love her/him/[name of other doll], don't you?" "Whyyyyy howwwwww are you so beautiful?" ;_; (also asked a lot) I'm not sure if I expect an answer.... and I don't know if I answer the questions myself? I'm gonna pay more attention to this!
When I do photoshoots with them, yeah. But more along the lines ranging from "Stay still, demmet!!!" to "Please don't fall, please don't fall...."
I do - I say good morning and goodnight, ask his opinion on whatever I'm making for him, ask him to sit/stand nicely when I'm posing him and apologise if I accidentally knock him over, twist his limbs etc But I talk to everything to be honest, animate or otherwise
oh yes, but that's because I sometimes have a hard time of maintaining a train of thought just in my head... I will also talk to my cat and, for a while, I kept a dedicated plush in my car just to talk at.
I talk to my dolls a little, moreso now than when I last posted. One of my off-topics sits right next to the door so I always pat her head as I pass and say hello. I usually talk to them as I dress and pose them too but I've taken to saying goodnight to "everybody." It's silly but harmless eccentricity.
Yes, but only when that f*$%ing Google speaker isn't in the room. Otherwise, it tends to chime in, and then I have to yell, "I wasn't talking to you!" I try to say nice things, but when restringing, uh, yeah. Lots of cursing. I'll apologize after, tho. "It wasn't you. It was the Hulk at Dream Valley."
I even talk to food I'm preparing so it would be strange for me to not talk to my small humanoid figures.
I do, a bit. I don't have any characters I'm trying to shell, so a lot of it is me thinking out loud when I'm trying to work out my dolls' personalities, like "oh okay you don't want that wig to come off, I see" or "let's try the blue eyes again".
Yes, I talk to my dolls. In the same way I used to talk to my kids when they were babies. "how about we wear this today". "you like this one". "Oh, look how cute you are". Usually when I am dressing them or putting a new or different wig on them. I talk out loud as long as no one else is in the room with me.
Sometimes I do… mostly when I’m dressing them or when their wigs sometimes fall off. A few of my dolls have a very strong presence so I end up talking to them more often than others… especially my Shiwoo
I'm not really one to talk to inanimate objects. I do however feel different personalities/vibes from each of my dolls.
Last time I caught myself saying "You're a cutie, you know?" to one of my dolls. I was shocked because it's what I usually say to my cat Aside that, I talk to them like I talk to inanimate things like a door or a table. Like saying "sorry!" when I hit them unwillingly.
