Do you save boxes for dolls and accesories?

Nov 15, 2021

    1. Hi everyone! I have a general question about your level of collecting.

I've been wondering recently if people keep the boxes that their dolls, doll clothes, and accessories come in? I don't have that much space and I'd prefer to toss outfit boxes etc but I don't want that to hinder me if I decide to sell or trade my clothes/accessories in the future.

Would you guys buy a doll without it's original box? What about clothes or accessories? Let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks!

    2. I do save the doll boxes and I also save the outer shipping boxes if they are in good enough condition. I usually don't save the boxes clothing comes in, or maybe that is just because I haven't gotten any in boxes? I think all the clothing I have bought came in bubble envelopes.
I wouldn't be opposed to buying a doll without the original box, if I really wanted the doll badly enough, as long as all the other originals were included (COA etc) and it was packed very well protected.

    3. I save all of the shipping containers and the inner boxes. I have them labeled and stored in my storage building. I don't mind buying a doll without the original outer box but it is a plus for me for it to have one. I have actually contacted different companies to buy a replacement box if the inner shipper is damaged.. As far as clothing boxes and bags the ones I usually keep are special ones that are pretty or decorated. I have kept a few from some other countries because I liked the way the language looked on the lables. This is often true if the outfit comes from Russia. I like the look of the Cyrillic alphabet. I also keep packages with Asian language characters if they are hand written. I enjoy lingusitics so these items pique my interest.

    4. I save all inner & outer doll shipping boxes for potential resale down the line. With accessory stuff I tend to save it if it's a high value item I might eventually want to resell, or if the packaging is reusable (ie adykadoll) I'll save it.

I'd definitely buy clothes/accessories without original packaging, but packaging is definitely a plus. I'd be wary of buying a doll without it's original box but so long as everything else was there I'd be okay with it.

    5. I save all the doll boxes. As for doll clothes, I only save their boxes if they have really gorgeous packages and are expensive.

      • x 2
    6. I don't keep the boxes. I collect 1/3 dolls, I currently own 12 of them, and there is absolutely no way I would have the room to store all those boxes just for the sake of having them. I don't plan on selling any of my dolls, so feeling like I have to have the original packaging for a hypothetical future buyer isn't a consideration for me. At the moment I still have one box, because I use it for storing doll clothes. When I finally get around to building a wardrobe cabinet for doll clothes, I'll toss that one too.

As for whether I'd buy dolls without the boxes: would and do, absolutely. Almost half of my dolls were second-hand, and I didn't get the original box with a single one of them. I prefer to get my second-hand dolls unstrung. I like giving them a fresh re-stringing when I get them anyway, and when they're unstrung they can fit in a much more compact package and therefore be less expensive to ship. No sense paying extra to have a bunch of original packaging sent to me just so I can throw it out anyway.

As to boxes or original packaging for second-hand clothing or accessories-- if possible, I care about that even less than I care about boxes for the actual dolls.

    7. Yes, I would and do buy without the boxes. Boxes are just packaging and if I kept all that stuff I'd never have room for my dolls, their clothes or anything else. Given that I don't keep them myself it would be a bit strange if I expected anyone else to have the original box when I buy a second hand doll form them.

    8. I save both the company doll box and shipping box for all of my dolls, and flatten all the boxes that can be easily taken apart (since you can just glue the flaps back together if needed). I only save the packaging for clothes/accessories if the item is really valuable. I used to save every little thing but I have a lot of dolls now and there just isn't room for all that stuff anymore.

    9. I save it all! Some of it is for resale value but most of it is because I refuse to pay for shipping materials. I haven't paid for them (boxes, bubble wrap, etc.) since I started a year ago and I hope to keep that up! It's not just a cost thing but an environmental one too. :)

    10. So far I´ve saved all the doll boxes plus most of the shipping boxes, mostly because when I started this hobby I´ve often read, that you should keep them, if you want to sell the doll. The shipping boxes are the first thing to got, if I need space, as I don´t plan to sell any of my dolls at the moment. The doll boxes I would probably still keep, because it´s really nice to have a safe space to store the doll in, if its not on display ^^
I´ve never bought a second hand BJD, but I think having the original doll box would be just a plus, nice to have but not a reason not to buy, if I really want the doll and nothings seems fishy about the seller/ the doll itself.

For clothes and accessoires I only keep the packaging if its cute, or for storage reasons, like for hats, so they don´t get too squished, or things bracelets/ necklaces, so they don´t get tangeled in the bigger box, where I keep them.
Buying clothes or accessoires without the original packaging is absolutely no issue to me.

    11. I only save the inner boxes of dolls. Not for resale or anything, but in the event that I have to store my dolls. I store their clothes and wigs in them, so they're not just sitting around empty.

    12. I save all original doll boxes but I will buy a doll without one. As far as clothing etc boxes, it depends on the box. If its cute I will. If not I may put in a different box so it stores more easily.

    13. I have saved all of my dolls' inner boxes and shipping boxes for the most part. If I bought them from a dealer, they didn't have a shipping box (like at Fabric Friends - I went there, doll was on display, came home in it's inner box). I have bought a few dolls second hand and with the exception of my Latidoll Censya, they all came in their original boxes. I like to buy dolls with their original boxes when possible because I find that if I need to move or store them away or sell them, the boxes make it convenient for me. That being said, it's because I have a place to keep them. If I didn't have space to store them, I might get rid of them.

As for clothing/accessories packaging, I am actually in the middle of a project where I will keep the labels for the outfits but not the packaging. I own a lot of Volks clothing and honestly, they're packaging is not to my liking. But I want to keep the labels so that if I do resell them, I can say hey it's this set, came with this. I've only kept packaging that is reusable. The rest I recycle. I don't always need original packaging when buying wigs/shoes/eyes/clothes for dolls.

    14. I folded most good boxes down to lay flat into a under bed storage box. I placed all doll blankets/sleeping bags into a clothing gravel bag where you can suck out the air and placed into the same under bed storage box. CoA’s and other doll papers are all under name in a binder for my doll papers :) Clotihng and accessories I store in a tote in my closet. I don’t have a ton of space and the boxes honestly bother me of how big they are :pout: at 14+ dolls it takes a ton of space. I do intend to keep original makers doll box - but i got rid of some shipping boxes. If accessories have labels/cards etc. I intend to keep that with my purchase receipt in a binder. :3nodding:

    15. I've saved all my doll boxes so far, in case I need to tuck them away safely every now and again. Don't see the need to keep accessory boxes tho--I've been keeping the plastic, but other than that I've been storing them in organizational drawers.

    16. I keep doll boxes, if the doll comes with one. I definitely prefer to have them, it just feels more....complete? Authentic? Neat and orderly? It also helps if I want to sell them. Not all buyers care about a box, but some do, and it can also help keep them safe in shipping. Some of my dolls were secondhand and don't have boxes. I wish they did, but if I want the doll bad enough and don't have an option of getting one in a box and/or one with a box is much more expensive, I'll settle.

As for clothes and accessories and such, I usually don't keep the packaging, since so much of what I buy just comes in a clear boring bag anyway, some not even resealable. If it comes in a particularly nice box or resealable package, I might keep it. I do keep boxes/bags for wigs, as it keeps them in good condition in storage.

    17. I dont save them. I have other storage methods that are more convenient, like using totes or those pretty boxes you get at the dollar store. Plus, I don't have a lot of space for just boxes, so I assign drawers/totes to doll stuff.

      • x 2
    18. I've kept the pretty ones (by that i mean i only have the granado and IOS doll box right now). I throw the shipping/outer boxes as my space is limited.

      • x 1
    19. I save the sturdy boxes and repurpose them for storage of other items so they don't just take up space. If a sale goes through then at least I'd still have the original boxes.

    20. I only have one 1/3 doll now so I still have her box to store her in and possibly for resale value (although if I’m honest, I’ll probably never sell her). I do keep her outfits in their original packaging too, but it’s all stuff from Azone and Volks so they’re just plastic bags that hardly take up much space. However, I’ve been thinking of buying a couple of DDs and a Puyoodoll Kumako, and I’m not sure I’ll have the space to keep their boxes…

    21. I keep the inner doll boxes but I toss the foam mostly. Rapidfire foam expulsion might inconvenience me someday if I decide to sell one of them but I'm using the boxes in various ways, usually storage for their things, and it eats up a lot of space. I kept one outer box because I don't really own living room furniture so it's been acting as an all-purpose table. I don't really keep clothing packaging unless it's exceptionally nicely branded or constructed.

A piece of notably retained foam, we call him The Visitor and we love him very much:

    22. As long as it's neatly packaged, I don't see the problem! I feel your pain though. I don't have much space for boxes too.

    23. Yes I save the boxes of my dolls and clothing if their packaged beautifully.
I have a specific vanity for my BJDs and their things. :)

    24. I have 50 dolls now in my collection, so no…absolutely no boxes here! After so many years in the hobby, I’ve refined my crew and honed my aesthetic enough to be done with the notion of selling any of them…they’re all keepers as far as I’m concerned and they’re all on display (no box babies here.):) So keeping boxes just seems like a frivolous waste of space at this point. The space can better be used for lovely trunks and decorative boxes to store all their clothes and accessories!;) And certainly I would buy a doll without its original box (and have many times) if purchasing second hand.

    25. I keep a lot of the inner boxes that my dolls came in. I've gotten rid of some of them though. My biggest box from Soom got thrown out after the basement I was storing it in partially flooded. Soggy cardboard isn't a good thing to try to save. My first tiny from Granado came in a shoe box shaped one big enough for an MSD that I eventually decided was too big and awkward to keep. Shipping boxes get re-used or recycled. I only save packaging for clothes or eyes if I can reuse it..

    26. I've kept boxes for a few fragile props and accessories, and for more complex outfits that came in them... but in general I never keep doll boxes. With a crew the size of mine, I just can't. I'd have to give up half of my garage or the entire attic.

I have kept a few of my white Volks Sato FCS boxes for "heads and spare resin parts"-storage, since they're pretty and well-nigh-indestructible... but those are the only doll boxes that have stayed around. Everything else? Right to the recycle bin as soon as I know the doll is a keeper.

    27. I have every box and almost every shipper. It comes in handy when moving them, which I've had to do several times now. Finding room to store them is a pain, but I manage it. The boxes also store all of the extra parts (heads, hands, fantasy/human parts, clothes, fullset items that I swapped, etc).

    28. I keep my doll boxes under my bed and used them to keep their clothes and wigs. It definitely took alot of space. But I'll throw those boxes of doll which I am committed to not sell.

    29. I keep all my doll boxes.
I've made several long-distance moves over the last ten years and it's absolutely been worth it. Yes, you can pack up the dolls using regular packing supplies, but the boxes are designed to protect the specific dolls in transit so it takes some of the guesswork out of the packing. In fact the only doll I've had be damaged during a move was one I had to pack myself since he didn't come with a box originally.

And it's the same thing with selling them. I always felt more confident shipped out a doll in it's original box, and was more worried about the three dolls I sold that didn't have original boxes.

I don't usually keep the packaging from clothes, although I do think that would be worth it from a resale perspective (although I've never actually sold any outfits) - and depending on the packaging, it might help organize the clothes in storage.

    30. I do keep their boxes. I have no intention of selling, but one day they will probably move into new homes and the boxes are a good way to keep track of carts and other extras.

    31. I decided to hold onto the box that my doll came in. It was a little busted up, since it wasn't directly from the company (because I bought her secondhand), but I appreciated that the former owner held onto her company box, and I want to hold onto it too. I think when I order other dolls in the future directly from dealers or companies, I'll hold onto the boxes -- just as little mementos. I can see how that would end up taking up some space, though, so maybe my mind will change the more dolls I end up collecting. I don't think I'd ever do the same for accessories!

    32. I've kept the inner doll boxes for both of mine. It gives them a bit of protection as I don't really have a good way to store them. it came in handy too as the box for one of them was ripped but my doll and the pillows inside are fine. They also are great doll-sized bases for props and such. I don't keep any of the other boxes, unless I intend to do shipping sometime soon for a face-up/body blush or whatever. And I would totally buy a doll without the company box because it's really just a box.

    33. I save every doll box.

I had to reinforce the storage space I was using because the overhead space threatened to collapse from the weight of the boxes, I also have more boxes in a closet. I have way too many doll boxes. I don't save accessory boxes.

I am pretty sure that all the used dolls I bought came with their boxes. I would probably buy a used doll without a box if all the paperwork was in order, but I would prefer the doll with the original box, even if the box is banged up a little bit. As long as the clothes label for the dolls accessories are on the clothing item, I don't need a box.

    34. I'll gladly buy a doll without a box, but I keep all my doll boxes, especially the old Volks ones, and even if they're a little bit beat up. My YoTenshi Yuki came secondhand in her original box and it's beautiful; I don't think I could ever bring myself to get rid of it. I even find myself keeping small or simple boxes, like the one my Cocoriang head came in recently.

Maybe someday I'll let go of the simpler ones:whee:

    35. I don't keep any of the boxes. I don't plan on selling any of my dolls and they are displayed so no need to keep boxes for storing them.

    36. My Luts box has followed me from home to college to home again for the past five years. I'm pretty sure I've dropped it several times and almost crushed it but it's protected that doll all this time.

    37. I save all my doll boxes, not the shippers because I don't plan on selling any of my dolls, but the boxes are actually really important to me. Currently they are my only means of storage because I still haven't settled on the right cabinet or cabinet space for the way I'd eventually like to display everything. I also agree with a few mentions that the boxes just make the doll feel "complete". I'm a collector at heart so it feels if I have the box I have the full package so to speak. I think even when I am able to take my dolls out of their boxes, I'll find a place for them.

I don't keep any accessory boxes oddly enough! Clothes, wigs, eyes, etc are just sored in a tote along with CoAs.

    38. I must save the boxes of the dolls but I can't keep all the boxes for the accesories otherwise my house will explode lol

    39. For the first ~5 years in the hobby I used to keep all the doll boxes simply because those were where I'd store the dolls. Eventually I figured out a permanent place in the closet for the dolls, but still kept the boxes for ~2 years just in case I'd need them, and also because I just felt kinda bad about the idea of throwing such fancy boxes in the trash. A couple months back however I was finally annoyed enough about the space they take that I got rid of about half of them, though first I cut off the logos of the lids to keep, I was thinking I could do a collage out of them some day.

Other packaging I rarely save. I've kept one tiny cute box because it happened to be the perfect size for storing some other accessories, and some of the shoes are still in their plastic packaging as well, to help keep the pairs together.

    40. I even save the mail boxes because I don't know I will sell it or not.

      • x 3
    41. I don't save 90% of them, unless they're either ones I've had forever or ones for dolls I think I might sell. I just have too many hobbies that take up too much space to be sacrificing it on a bunch of boxes. I don't care at all when I'm buying, especially since sometimes the original box makes shipping really, really expensive.

      • x 1
    42. I save everything from doll boxes to packages that accessories arrive in. That's mostly my own slight hoarder tendency but it proved useful. The boxes make for good storage and keeping the rest is useful for when I occasionally sell things or send heads out for faceups. Good packing material and boxes.

    43. Dolls' boxes, Lego boxes, shipping boxes... My husband would tell you I compulsively keep every box that falls into my hands xD
And it ends up being a problem in terms of space, I know, but I find a use for them eventually so I can't bring myself to throw them away. What I do is that I fold the ones I'm not using at the moment, so they don't take that much space.

    44. I keep every doll's box (not including the outer packaging), it's like their little home base just in case they need to be moved. Plus I can separate everyone's belongings accordingly. Also, I just can't help but keep their original boxes, it's a part of them to me. They remind me of the day I got my dolly. TwT <3

    45. For now I keep all my dolls in their original boxes. They make for great temporary storage until I give them a proper shelf space for display. I'm not sure what I'll do with the boxes after, though, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there xD. For accessories, I don't care as much for the boxes, but I will keep the plastic bags they may come in. I find it keeps my items organized when I store them away in my clothes box-trunk. I'll probably get rid of those eventually whenever I find a better upgrade for my stuff.

    46. I keep the doll's box, but not the outer packaging. I usually keep my dolls in their boxes, as I know they are safe in there and hopefully won't get damaged.

There's only one doll's box I didn't keep, as it was just packing foam inside a shipping box. It was too big and an awkward size to store, so I got rid of it.

    47. All of my dolls that I’ve received in boxes, I have, and use the boxes. I like to fill them with clothes, and I’ve received accessory boxes that I also keep depending on how elaborate/if I like them.

    48. I always keep the boxes! I think there is hardly a better way to store or transport the dolls. And if I have to sell one, I can also send it much more securely in the box. I use other things for accessories or clothing (I usually can find something suitable at IKEA).

    49. I always keep them in case I ever want to sell them off, and would keep smaller boxes in larger ones to save space.

    50. I always try to save boxes in which dolls arrived as it helps with sale, but unfortunately, I lost some certificates and boxes during moving from one town to another. Maybe for 4-5 years I wasn't in hobby and all my dolls lied in their boxes away from the sunlight and doll stuff also lies in thematic boxes for each type of things.
But now I know which of my dolls will stay with me and in the nearest future after moving again I will create some sunlight-free cabinet for dolls.

    51. Yeah of course I keep them even I do not have space . It’s something collectible for me .

    52. I keep the boxes of dolls, not the shipping ones though. I store the leaflets and coa's and other stuff in there. I save them because they are beautiful and very good to have if I have to move.

I havent received any accessories or clothes in boxes so I havent saved their packaging. If I did get some really pretty I will save it propably.

    53. I don't have an appropriate place to display my dolls, so the company boxes they came in are great for storage. I tried to save some of the accessories' packaging but found it gets too disorganized, so now all the clothing etc is going into storage containers. Works much nicer!

    54. I always always ALWAYS keep doll boxes. I've found that I'm a bit of a revolving doll collector so I want to make sure that I have their boxes just in case I do decide to sell.

    55. Yeah , for both of them .

    56. I saved doll boxes for a long time, but I live in a small space, and it was getting to be suffocating having all those boxes stacked everywhere,. I've sold several dolls this past few months, and nobody wanted to pay the expensive shipping cost of sending them in their original boxes. They preferred to have them shipped Priority Mail. So I figured why keep the boxes if nobody wants them. I recycled most of them.
Also, I don't store any of my dolls in their boxes, except a couple which are projects waiting to be worked on. My dolls are displayed where I can see them.
As for clothing, I've only received clothing in padded envelopes. I save those and re-use them for mailing.

    57. Im new in this hobby so I try to save... but they are massive so I think ill need to throw them out soon...

    58. I only keep them in case of moving. I move around a lot so that would be convenient to have. And so far I only have 3 dolls so it's not really a big deal to keep all the boxes.

    59. I save the boxes since it's kind of a weird size and annoying to get again should I need one.

I am also a bit of a revolving door doll enjoyer so the box helps with provenance when selling them.

But lately people have been wanting dolls I sell shipped without the OG box, so now I have a few extra ones. I might toss. Though the Dollshe one with the cut foam feels too nice to toss. lol not sure what use case this will be for. My other female doll in the same size is Iplehouse and they also have the nice foam cut out boxes.

    60. I currently have all the boxes saved, but I'm going to have to get rid of some of them, as I'm running out of space.
