I'm so glad that I came upon this thread as I've been struggling with the "to undie or not to undie" dilemma myself. My girl does not wear undies or a bra simply because I haven't made any for her yet. I currently have my boy in boxer-briefs, but I'm finding them to be very problematic. They're a little bulky under his tight khakis, there's a very visible panty-line happening, and they get stuck in his hip joints every time that I re-pose him. I only dress my dolls in light-colored repurposed human clothing that I've washed several times, so I'm not worried about staining. So I do believe that I will be ditching the underwear and using them only for instances or shoots where my dolls are sans outerwear.
I say that I prefer my bjd's wear underwear, just feels natural, I wouldn't not wear underwear myself, feel abit cool down there and odd.
Well... to tell the truth Volks clothes are designed for wearing undies in mind so if you dont wear a bra your doll chest looks like front of your car after kissing a wall considering you wear protective undies you should put it on first because they are ment for that but pants you should be puted on last (considering you use skirt) because it's easy to put skirt on before than after especially if skirt dont have elastic belt if you use jeans its pointless to wear any other pannts besides protective ones of corse if jeans are designed ro wear on pants you may want to wear ones
It's strictly aesthetic for me. I have a couple that have leggings or bloomers with their skirts or dresses, some that are commando, and my big Connor - well, he wears a kilt, soooooo.....
I tend to make underwear to all my dolls :'D My girls have short skirts, so I think going as commando isn't very ladylike xD But if undies won't fit under their clothes - then no can do and they have to go commando
I put on undies...but lately I've been feeling like they need a bra too. Whenever I change their shirts, I just get the feeling that she's asking me for a bra!
If my dolls are wearing pants or shorts they are "free". My girls will have underwear on when wearing dresses and skirts. If they are wearing pjs, you've guessed it "free".
If my girls are wearing dresses yes since i usually have them sitting people don't need to see down there lol.
Only under skirts, haha. I find that it doesn't matter much under pants or leggings, and it just creates bulk.
I personally feel like underwear is important, for my first and new doll my first thought is the bra and panties. But I'm also thinking of them as an OC, and what they would wear
No, I dun put underwear on my doll before I put clothes on them. The only doll which has underwear is my boy, I put the underwear on him when I want him to take photos with the underwear. All my girls' dresses and skirts are not very short, so I dun think my dolls need underwear.
If I'm putting dark clothes on them, I put body suits on. I dunno, just saves me hassle. All my boys have vests or t-shirts and underpants (boxers). I just like them to have underwear on. XD I know it's silly!
In my opinion, anybody wearing a skirt gets panties or bloomers. Pants wearers go commando. As for a kilt, well, that's not a skirt. "Nothing is worn under the kilt, you know. It's all in perfect working order!"
I don't think underwear is really necessary for maintenance or another practical reason (assuming you mean modern underwear; if you are worried about staining, tighty whities or panties aren't going to do it). For staining, you should probably go for more of a body stocking (because staining has a greater chance of occurring at joints due to the rub of the fabric--you want something that covers the pelvis/thigh joint and probably the knee, maybe the ankle, for full-length pants, for example). Underwear will help a bit--don't get me wrong--but it's not the best. As for aesthetic purposes, this isn't exactly the same, but I think it helps me feel more like an outfit is complete if the doll is also wearing underwear. Since I make all my doll clothes, I can ensure that the clothes fit over the underwear. I especially like if the underwear coordinates in some way. Another reason underwear is important is for period clothing. A lot of historical styles (especially for women) are extremely dependent on foundation garments (underwear) for the correct silhouette (hoop skirts, corsets, etc.).
Depends on the clothing but...I'll probably always do so either way. It will feel less awkward because...well...just the thought about it in real life...(I dont like wearing stuff without underwear lol...)....you know where Im getting? ;w; It'll be a good practice/habit too. ^^
What an amusing topic . I would like my dolls to wear underwear when possible, but they can bulk up in the outfit depending on the clothes. Also, the undergarments are going to be mostly unseen anyway other than a few examples like sheer shirts showing a cute tank top or something.
Depends on the outfit, but mostly my dolls' underwear is just there so they have something to wear when otherwise they might be completely naked.
If a doll is wearing a skirt or dress the doll gets underwear. If it's pants of shorts they go commando, because otherwise the clothing can get bulky. I have a full body suit that came with one of my dolls, but I don't use it. I don't really worry about staining, I've been able to scrub off any clothing stains so far with baking soda and magic eraser. I tend to wash or soak their clothes to try to get extra dye out before the dolls wear the clothes. I more put underwear on my girls in skirts and dresses because it feels weird without it.
All of my girl dolls have panties, because I like to put them in dresses and skirts and I don't like being accidentally flashed. If they're in pants, they usually don't need undies, and they add a lot of bulk.
I like giving them underwear, but it mostly depends on what they’re wearing. If I don’t find a need to buy it (if they’re wearing pants or something), then no, not really.
If a doll wears pantyhose I put them outside the pantyhose to prevent the crotch part of the hose from slipping down. Otherwise it's completely random if I use it or not
Yes! I personally feel self-conscious if I don't put any underwear on them - but it really depends on the owner because honestly, underwear can be optional both to dolls and humans.
I feel like underwear is cute and can add personality, but has its pros and cons. If one of my dolls is wearing pants, there usually is not enough space for underwear. Sometimes for my girls if they have a bra it helps hide their nipples, but sometimes the bra is too obvious through the dress, so I'll opt for no bra. I like panties for when dolls are wearing dresses, because it feels like a more completed look (and to prevent flashing, lol).
I used to put underwear on my dolls, but now I don't really care to. I do have them in a protective jumpsuit so they don't stain.
When my dolls are wearing dresses and skirts, I put undies on them so they don't flash anyone. But I don't usually bother under pants unless they're loose enough to fit them under there. I also tend to use light colors for doll panties, since I don't want to stain them.
All my dolls are displayed in a “sitting” position, which means all of the fabric of their clothing is especially pressed into one area - an absolute equation for color transfer. So they all wear underwear to protect the resin, even if no one will ever see it.
I was just wondering the same thing myself lol. For the first time yesterday, I put her leggings on without panties and they went on so much easier and it was easier to get the bunched up areas smoothed down too. It definitely changed my outlook; I'll save them for the skirts/dresses only going forward.
New I used not to, but I always put dress on my Dolls so it quickly became a bit of a problem for me when I got my first doll with actual private parts lmao. I was so glad when I found my first pair of underwear for her !
New I always put underwear on my dolls. I'm learning how to sew right now, and the first thing I sewed for my first doll was bloomers and socks. There's something so special and cozy to me about watching videos about historical clothing and learning about each layer of an outfit, so that same feeling has carried across to my doll hobby.
New I usually do. It helps protect the resin from staining, and sometimes my doll's clothes can be a little sheer.
New It depends on the outfit! But most of the time, if they can wear underwear without compromising the look of the outfit, they're getting underwear I find that it makes them feel more "realistic" to have those little details, even if you can't see it when the full outfit is assembled.
New Lucifer didn't come with underwear and I haven't gotten him any yet...but I really should, because there's only one snap at the top of his fly keeping his pants on, which means his fly sometimes gapes open when he sits down I guess for now he's staying (marginally) historically accurate by just having a long shirt underneath it, lol.
New Most of my dolls do wear underwear. All the girls have their own underwear, I would feel weird if they didn't when wearing a dress or a skirt. But, for the boys, they only wear it when they are not wearing skinny pants. I have read on a previous post that washing doll clothes before using them could prevent staining. I didn't know that. I will wash them from now on!!!
New I only put briefs/safety shorts on dolls that aren't wearing some form of pants, otherwise they add too much bulk and get caught in the joints. The lack of underwear on a clothed doll doesn't bother me. Doll clothing requires a bit of "cheating" to look like human clothing, especially at smaller scales, as humans are made of squishy tissue and BJDs are made of hard resin. The one thing that bothers me is when the doll is sculpted in a way where certain features, particularly the chest and groin, are still very obvious with clothing on (looking at you, Dollshe, and the pants-destroying genitalia on the Old Hound body). I do like when dollmakers include a "cup" piece with male bodies so the doll can have a natural-looking silhouette in pants instead of a flat featureless groin or a very obtrusive one (thanks ATS, Bimong and Granado!). I'm more likely to put socks on a doll to protect it from colour transfer than any other form of underwear, as I've bought a few secondhand dolls who had bits of disintegrated pleather shoes stuck to them, as well as dye transfer. If I receive a piece of doll clothing with excess dye, I give it a soak before putting it on the doll (the colour transferring to cardboard used to keep the item in place is a warning sign, especially for colours that are known to bleed like black, navy and red). If any colour does transfer to a doll, most of it can be removed with isopropyl alcohol and a melamine sponge. Worst case is light wet sanding. One of the main reasons I have no interest in non-resin dolls is because I can't be bothered dealing with how easily colour transfers to vinyl and other plastics.
New I like to use either long underwear or boxers for my boy who gets the most dressing attention from me, it definitely has its maintenance reasons! But even if it did absolutely nothing, I would still have him wear underwear!
