OT/General Do you need an artist's permission if you sculpt heads meant to fit his body sculpts?

Sep 16, 2011

    1. Some people only have time/energy/resources to sculpt heads. If they like X company's body types, can they sculpt for it to fit in terms of colours, resin type and size and sell them? And if the two different artists have different values like X company insist on hand sculpting while you use 3D, they you can't do so? And can you cast in different colours for your head and label them as 'Company X Resin Match', 'Company Y Resin Match', 'Company Z Resin Match' etc. Just curious coz I know there are companies out there making only heads. Will it sell better if they 'team up' with well known companies?

    2. You don't need permission, no. And if you like their body and want to make heads to fit, they can't force you to not sculpt via 3D methods, unless (if f.ex we're talking about Dollshe) you also want this same company to produce the heads for you.

Several artists and companies make just heads and label their resin colours to suggest they will match other popular companies, however resin colours do tend to vary from batch to batch anyway (some more than others) and the so-called matches aren't always as good as one might want.

Whether this will help you sell more heads.. I'm not so sure. How much you sell depends on how much exposure you get and the quality of the sculpt, whether people like it, ie whether it fits in with their other dolls or is something different that other companies haven't offered yet.

    3. I want to know it as well.
And if you make other parts of the dolls? Like hands, foot, ears, I don't know.
      It would be ilegal?

    4. As long as you're making your own from scratch, not molding them from existing parts or trying to directly copy the originals to make a knockoff - and you're not using anything that is actually patented (potentially, it -might- be possible to patent a method of articulation in a doll, not that I've ever seen such a thing), I don't see any reason why it would be illegal to make pieces that are made as addons, to fit an existing doll. If you're planning on selling them, you'd probably want to state that you're not affiliated with the original doll company, though, just to avoid any confusion.
