Do you have an unintentional type?

Smiling dolls.... I remember I thought that smiling dolls sometimes looks creepy, then I realized I already have 2 heads that are on the smiling side Coherence, where is it.

 

Big/wide eyes and a pouty/grumpy face. To the point where I'm actively trying to keep an eye out for sculpts that don't have those features because otherwise they'd all be my dolls. Trying to cultivate facial variety within my collection is hard!

I also keep gravitating towards pink clothing despite all my dolls (supposedly) having their own distinct colour schemes. That also applies to my off topic dolls as well

 

Guys with smirks or extremely brooding looks... ahh! I can't resist them!! As well as smiling girls, I just love them! I tend to dress all my girls in pink, despite like baxterbrat said them having their own styles hehe... I just can't help myself

 

I totally didn't do this intentionally but all of my humanoid bjds have been elf eared girls. My original MSD hybrid went from an Impldoll Moon to a Minifee Juri, and when I got back into the hobby I bought a Lati Yellow Lumi second hand. When she arrived, it turned out she had been modified to be an elf, which wasn't disclosed by the seller since it was an estate sale. Love her though!

 

Clowns. And Pumpkins. But I know I like them for a long time.

 

One of my first dolls was an F-17, and I've noticed that a few of my other dolls have a similar nose and mouth shape to him...I guess I have a type.

 

Chubby bodied anime dolls. I now have two, and saw a third I’d like to have someday. The chubby esthetic came on gradually as it wasn’t my intention to actively add it to my collection, but now I think it will be my main criteria, so all the dolls match, lol.

 

I used to have an unintentional type and now I have a very intentional type: open mouth cuties with smiles. I love them I adore them and they make me so happy! Half of my dolls will have this feature after the next one arrives.

 

Skinny, small busts. Usually 1/3 scale, but I’m liking smaller dolls more now for some reason

 

I seem to gravitate toward dolls with open mouths, or at least teeth. Most of my collection has teeth visible, and I didn't plan that at all.

 

1/3-scale "Old school" sculpts that are more stylized than realistic, typically with natural hair-colors and skin tones, fairly neutral expressions and exclusively non-textured faceups. (Sorry, I'm just not a fan of that particular trend. Likewise bee-sting or exaggerated cupid's-bow lips.)

Wardrobes here vary, but many of my gang end up in Asian outfits... although some are much truer to actual historical styles, materials and construction than others. The truth is that I'm no more a stickler for strict "realism" in my dolls costumes than I am for their sculptural style. I care more about how it looks than how accurate it is to human clothing from the same period. My concern is for how well it suits the doll and how much I like the look.

 

Hehe, yes. My wife told me a while back that she can't tell any of my dolls apart because they all look the same. At first I was like, no, what can you be saying??? But...it's kind of true...

I love dolls with partially closed eyes, full lips and open mouths, with a specific spacing between the features that gives them what I will call a certain cat-like appearance. Hehe. Well, oh well. I love them!

 

I don't like dolls with teeth, yet I somehow ended up with four of them?

 

An intentional one being mostly elf ear sculpts. Unintentional being everyone in my crew is moderately or heavily tatted. Even though I tend to dislike them irl.

 

Clowns, pumpkins, Halloween-looking dolls, centaurs, fantasy dolls.
Even though I have none of them

 

Mostly elves and sculpts with teeth. ...and pretty boys with dark hair and light (usually blue) eyes (which is also usually the look for my OCs lmao).

 

• Delfs, all of them. Just any one of them, I'm hardly ever picky with them.
• Old School dolls.
• BIG BROODY BOYS. The bigger and broodier they are, the more I'm into them.

 

Dreaming dolls. I vividly remember being on the DoD site when I was choosing my first doll and being so creeped out by Dreaming Shall (she’s beautiful, past me was an idiot) because of her half-closed eyes, and now if I can get my hands on the dreamy version of a sculpt I will always choose it over open eyed.

 

I like to try and keep my dolls from being too much the same, but it's really hard for me to resist everyone having dark brown eyes. I dunno, they're just so pretty. More of my dolls than not have some shade of brown eyes...and I think about half of them have black hair. So I guess my inadvertent doll type is dark hair and eyes.

 

I like them thick eyebrows. No pencil lines for me.
That and either smug or smiling faces. They just feel cheerier and more alive to me that way.

 

Looking at my collection right now, next to me, I’ve just realized that I have A LOT of dolls with purple hair. Like nearly half of them.

 

I’ve been collecting since 2006, but it wasn’t until the early twenty-teens that I noticed I’d developed a basic unintentional “type”. I’d purchased a realistic-looking elf girl to shell a character (the realistic look was coming into vogue then and I was eager to try one.) She had every attribute that would make her a perfect fit for my collection…or so I thought. Well, 10 minutes out of the box and I suddenly realized she simply wasn’t for me. Turns out my heart had already been taken by the big eyed, small mouth, ever-so-slightly anime look of the “old school” style. Anything else lacked the “fairytale” look I needed to make my ever-expanding dolly-verse fit my imagination. Now I’m content to just admire those gorgeous realistic sculpts from afar.

For me it's probably smirking sculpts, and to a lesser extent, sculpts with tongue pieces. I just love it when a doll has a clear personality in its face! I also tend to like sculpts with elf ears.

 

My accidental types are the overall gothic aesthetics--half my characters could be vampires; black or red hair; and green and grey eyes (seriously, its getting over the top). A a red haired girl with greenish hazel eyes, who sometimes dresses like I stumbled out of Dracula's castle, I accidentally became my type too.

Oh, also twigling gamine. I have 2 of that head now, and am getting a third, with a possible plan for more--I'm also sitting at 5 ingenues, which is less ingenues than I've previously had, honestly.

 

As far as sculpts, I’ve always really liked big round lips and big noses on dolls. I think it stems from when I draw I always add these traits XD

I've got a lot with black or dark brown hair. More than half of my dolls have dark hair. That's partly since it works well with the tan resin I have a weakness for, though there's some light skinned dolls in dark wigs too.

Narrow-eyed dolls! A lot of companies in Korea like to refer to these as the 'romantic' versions of the normal open eyed versions. I think it has a sense of looking ethereal and I love it.

 

Red hair. Somehow I am always attracted to red wigs. Natural looking color reds, not the electric neon colors. half my dolls have red hair.
I have Irish redheads in my real life human family, so maybe that is why. Plus I have "pixel crushes" on Reno and Genesis from FFVII, both redheads. Go figure LOL

 

Long-legged guys. Most of mine, and my favourites, are long-legged guy sculpts. With strong jaws. Straight noses, usually.

Blue eyes, as well. I love blue eyes in real life, and most of my dolls have ended up with that colour by happenstance. So, I've got quite a few spare blues in my collection.

 

It seems brown eyes for me. I'll try different colors and often come back to deciding brown suits them best.

 

Sculpts with full lips are a thing for me. It is why I love Soom Dia so much. I also like long hair on men, but that was long before I started collecting dolls. Nearly all my boys have long hair.

 

Hybrids! I never thought I'd be a hybrider but I have so many and keep making more.

 

Apparently I have two boys with identical eye shape. They're by different dollmakers in separate countries. I completely didn't notice their resemblance until a friend observed that they looked like brothers. I did discover both sculpts at around the same time (although they came home almost a year apart), so I must've been subconsciously looking for a certain male face...

 

Unintentionally, I've ended up with teeth showing on 4 of my 5 dolls. 2 even have a separate teeth part, none of which I've consciously chosen (happy with the outcome nevertheless!)

 

I think my unintentional type is faces with jaws more towards squared. I collect them over and over. Every time I'm immediately head over heels by now I think it's something about the jaw shape. I have some outliers in my collection who do not qualify and they are usually neglected in the end.

 

Half closed eyes with either fangs or elf ears (or both)

And surprisingly green resin, I have three dolls in various green hues and that color always piques my interest with new releases where there are colorful resin options.

 

Smiles, a soft warm smile always wins me over. Every human-like doll in my not-so-serious wish list (I have no real wish list as of now) is smiling and the dolls in my collection I enjoy more are the ones that smile at me every time I see them.

 

Slightly open mouths! I just love sculpts where the doll's mouth is a bit open, whether or not teeth are showing. It feels expressive to me, like they're caught in the middle of something. I do love my dolls with closed mouths, too, though. I just have fewer of those and never realized how much so!

Also, while I love sculpts that break the general "BJD" or "dolly" look, I apparently have a soft spot for a baby face with rounder cheeks and doe eyes, because my Tian Ni, my Megu, and my Olivia have that sweet look!

 

So the SD13 Volks Okita Souji has a very distinctive smirky lip shape, and I keep buying dolls that have similar lip shape to him. Over and over. Or there was also when I realized I had several dolls that resembled Sio2 Taolu....

Yeah this keeps happening to me and I don't see it until they are all lined up and then I feel embarrassed. It got bad enough that now I have to ask myself if I like a new doll because it resembles a doll I already have, because odds are good I like it because it looks like one of my current dolls!

 

Small chin and upper lip more prominent than lower plus big eyes , maybe that's why I adore my notdolls

 

I love reading these comments, so interesting to learn what people gravite towards in dolls. Personally I love dreaming/half closed eye sculpts, that look little bit sleepy or gloomy. Silver and white hair is also a type it seems. I realised the other day that half of my characters have silver or white hair, definitely an unintentional choice, but it all makes sense thinking of all video game and anime characters I used to love as a kid.

 

Hmmm, I'm going to guess that you watched a lot of Inuyasha and played FFX... how wrong am I?

 

Yeahhhh I’ve noticed I tend to want all the boys with smirks. I got 2, have several on the wishlist, and was considering a 3rd before I was like, wait…xD

And I want to dress every girl I have in purple. Why? I have zero clue. But every time I look at any of my girls I’m like, “you know what color would look great on you? Purple.” XD

 

Hahaa! Yes, I definitely count Final Fantasy games and some other Square Enix games, like Nier and Kingdom Hearts, as an unintented bias/influence on my silver and white hair characters. When it comes to manga/anime Inuyasha is one series I read, but Trinity Blood would (still) be my biggest obsession.

 

Open mouths. I didn't realize I liked them that much until I ended up with three...plus eyeing a fourth. Sometimes I look at my dolls without open mouths and wish they had one too.

 

Long hair on guys and elf ears in company photos definitely draws in my attention almost magnetically… I blame this on my childhood love of the LOTR movies

I can hardly say it's unintentional anymore. Lusis could be included, but I've been using Oyasumi for a few years so that plate doesn't have eyes in.

 

Solemn, even slightly sad faces! I noticed that I gravitate towards sleepy- or narrow-eyed sculpts more than wide-open-eyed ones a lot. The vibe of a doll’s sculpt is the most important, though. I love any doll that gives me a very “quiet” feeling, like they’re content to sit and just watch all these human things go by.

 

For YOSDs I love happy heads! I don't plan on expanding this size for me, but I'd love to get the matching Jaki head for my Pipi, both H Minor Dolls.

For SD Males, I think I love old dudes so much. Old dudes with the cheekbones and square-ish jaws.

For SD Females, I love ones that kinda look like vintage dolls so I am in love with Maskcat Doll and Nakana Workshop.

I do have various choice of eyes in my eyes box, but browsing my old dolly photos on instagram today and just realize that I use Mako the most often.

Well, my life in this hobby is full of intentional things, I give my self many rules from what doll size to buy to what style of clothes to choose, so when I found some unintentional, I feel a bit surprise and happy

 

Big-eyed ingenue girls. I've got SD and MSD ones. Also purple eyes and red hair, not necessarily on the same doll.

 

Oh golly do I have a type, it’s usually half closed or shut eyes, full lips and parted or open mouths, teeth or no teeth. No matter how hard I’ve tried through the years I can’t break this lol. And my favorite characters have been shelled into sculpts with those features. XD

oh and elaborate clothing/ jewelry. I love this hobby because the clothing is such high quality and people are so creative it blows my mind.

 

I had NO intention of collecting anthro dolls, but I'm now up to three cats, a fox, a scorpion, and I'm contemplating the new Deer boy.

 

For whatever reason, i keep being drawn to dolls that have partially open mouths/ small smiles, Loongsoul Bai Jue, Dream Valley Vanora, Impldoll Imara...i'm sure there's more xD
