DIY: Diffuser for Pop-up Flash

Feb 7, 2009

    1. I am so happy to find this thread! Especially now, when it's dark most of the time here up north, one can't take photos without flash. Thanks for all these usefull tips :)

    2. MacGuyver, indeed! I'm going to try this... I never use flash if I can avoid it but this is worth a try.

    3. This was such a helpful thread to read through and I loved to see the great results from all the different cameras, with the diffuser and without. When I go get my camera I will for sure be getting a piece of foam to do this! I don't have anything more than my HTC Desire smart-phone camera right now (which does thankfully have a flash and takes decent pictures for my purposes), however the next thing I am saving up for (along with my CTY-T.He head) is a decent camera that won't break my bank account. While I save up the money I will be tinkering with building a home made light box big enough to photograph SD's in and learning as much as I can about digital photography. My younger brother is thankfully really into photography, and going to school to be a photographer next fall, so he will be able to help me out a lot with learning the various things and techniques, which I have sadly forgotten since I took photography all those years ago in Junior High School.

    4. I actually saw this here and used it for getting better photos for my school photography project. Worked like a charm, I used several sheets of paper instead of craft foam (didn't have any). I'll edit this post with with/without pictures soon, because those are always nice to see.

    5. Awesome Tips! I'll definitely try this out! Thanks for sharing!:D

    6. Thank goodness I saw this! I was always so frustrated that when I turned off my camera's flash, the apature settings would go wonky. All my photos turned out so bad. So I tried this and now I'm going to use it tons! Works great! Apart from it flashing back into my face everytime I take a photo but I'll work on the angle of the foam x_x
Here is the photo I took with a foam diffuser over my pop out flash, unedited :

    7. Thats pretty clever! Me gusta!! :3

    8. This is just what I needed. Thank you!

    9. what a BRILLIANT ideas!! thank you for sharing, I should make one for myself too :fangirl:

    10. Someone I met at a doll meet told me about this thread and I'll definitely have to give it a try. My camera's flash is so BRIGHT it bleaches out the pictures of my dolls (to the point where some of them don't look like they even HAVE face-ups), but if I have it on anything but auto flash it won't focus properly. I was putting it on red-eye mode where it flashes twice and snaps the picture inbetween and that helped a little, but this seems like it works much better (judging by all the example photos). I'm going to go out tomorrow and pick up a sheet of craft foam to try it out myself.

    11. Love this tip! Ive been doing something kinda like this for awhile. I just stick a little white business card about half an inch in front of the flash. It works great in all types of lighting but its hard to hold it and take pictures at the same time. Your tips is so help full! Thank you!

    12. Gonna see if I can rig something like this up for my camera.

    13. Finally I got the solution! Now I can take picture in my dark room without worrying pop-up flash or insufficient light. Thank you so much!

    14. great! thank you! very useful

    15. Thank you for this tip. I'll try it out sometime with my figures for I don't have a doll yet. :<
And what settings did you use, if I may ask? XD

    16. Thank you for this post!! here's a picture with my popup flash, i would try diffused it when i have more time. >.<

    17. I don't have a doll yet, I'm still saving up for it. Haha! But I used your technique and it did some great lighting and detail enhancements. I'll definitely use it during indoor photoshoots! :D Also, anyone heard of using a Marlboro cigarette packet as diffuser? Here's the link! XD

    18. think this is a project to play with now in autumn evenings! It gets darker earlier, also inside. I have done some of this before, also tried colored items (plastic like the ones you can by for pocket flashlights to covered the blitz, that makes a coloreffekt into the picture. Blu gives a very pretty look in winter weather.
