The headcap magnets in my 11 years old Luts head seem to be disintegrated and I'm having a real hard time trying to remove them from the hole due to this. Does anyone encounter this issue before and is there a way to remove them in totality? I tried using knife to kinda scoop it out but it just bristle the disintegrated part a bit (they come out in dust form) and not like, the entire magnet. I stopped right there because it's going to get messy i pressume.
I'd love to know this too. I have a kdf head with disintegrating magnets too. I've tried everything to get it out. I ended up putting a couple layers of clear nail polish over it just to try to keep it together for now, and not have tiny shavings on the opposite magnet.
ohhh I should try putting the nail polish to keep it together coz it's very messy indeed D: guess i'll have to use washi tape to keep the headcap in place for now
That is a really new phenomenon to me....I know of magnets not wanting to come out (had this myself, and of course the glue held it in just when I noticed that I had placed with the wrong orientation). Do you mean they are falling apart? That worries me. Maybe carefully scrape it out?
Yeah, I have had a few older magnets that chipped and started to crumble. Neodymium magnets are very brittle by nature, which is why they are coated or plated, to protect them. But, if that coating is damaged in some way, they can corrode from the inside out if they start to get wet inside, or have some other issue. I never had any luck trying to remove a magnet once they get to that stage; they always just crumble more when I try. So I typically use a little glue or acrylic medium to keep it all contained. If you wanted to remove it completely though, you could have another magnet on hand to attract all the shavings as you scrape it out, or wet paper towels to wipe your tools on.
Hi!^^ I've had this happen a few times, and it was described on DoA before. I think Souldoll was one company who had some magnets disintgrating. Anyway, all neodymium magnets disintegrate after a while though it varies with quality - better made ones hold up longer. The bad news is, to the best of my knowledge there is no other way to remove them other than to scrape them out. I used needle files for that. (If you accidentally remove too much of the resin surrounding the magnet, you can build it up with apoxie clay again.) Neodymium is toxic, so use gloves and clean up carefully the neodymium dust you scraped out. It is a mess, but it is doable.
Thank you for the suggestions all! It's really unfortunate that I have to scrape it out D: Also many thanks for the health advise. I didn't know the dust is dangerous so I've been handling it as if it's a normal dust or something will be more careful in the future! Will try and use the top coat measures first. They core is still hard-ish for me to fully scrape it out urgh
Oh God I have a Belladona head with a magnet like this and I hesitated to do anything just placed it back in box , I'll try to do this out in the balcony when my son is not home what a mess , thank you all so much for the tips and info !!!
Oof- how upsetting for you to deal with! Yeah I might try removing it, by using acetone to dissolve the magnet's glue and then use steel or another magnet to draw out all the pieces.
It’s very easy to remove old magnets with anti-glue (sold in similar packs as ordinary superglue). You just put it right on magnets and near it and wait 2-3 hours (I even put it on whole day). And then you just retract it with something sharp)
