Discussion of 2007 Unoa Pre-order (Shipped Dec. 2007)

Dec 21, 2006

    1. The little metal bar holds the headback onto the neck. There's a deep groove for it, so don't worry about it falling out unless you're taking the headback off, too.

If I have Alyssa's head off, I tape the bar to the inside of the headback with masking tape until I'm ready to put her back together.

    2. I've taken away that little metalbar, and replaced it with a keychain-holder-thingie. Makes taking of the head so much easier! Although, since I haven't bothered to take away the chain, she does rattle! *grin*

    3. I apologize if this question has already been asked, but do they come with face ups? Also, can a customizer do a face up with only the face plate or do they need the entire head?

I have a lusis face plate and I'm going to order a Sist doll.

Thanks! I'm excited too! Although, I'm trying to pace myself since the girl won't be here for a looong time.

    4. the come unassembled in kits, you have to sand, glue, string and face them up all yourself. also a customizer should only need the face plate, since I detach my faceplates when I do my faceups.

    5. Do they have to be sanded? As in are there sharp edges or something like my Highheel feet parts? Or is it just something that would be nice but not needed?
I really want to avoid sanding at all costs, I have terrible lungs and no mask thick enough to block out resin dust.

I'll probably buy a kit sometime down the road, or next year. :sweat Saving for a Narae and B-el. Since B-el will be a kit I'm curious what needs to be done VS what can wait awhile.

    6. Rive; sometimes the eyes/mouths need to be sanded, like my Lusis dozing came with (really creepy) left-over resin teeth-like things between her lips from the casting, other than that there's probably just the seamlines that should have to be sanded.

    7. When I sand resin I place the part I'm sanding underwater in a clear bucket, the resin dust stays in the water and not in the air. You can use a simple mask it doesn't have to be thick, as long as it doesn't have any holes for particles to get through and covers both your mouth and nose you won't need to worry about resin dust.. but its safer and easier to do the underwater method, not only is the resin dust not in the air but its not sitting on the doll so you can see what you're doing better.

When I mentioned sanding I was refering to seam lines, normally I wouldn't mind them but the seams on the hands in particular are rather annoying and I did sand them off.

    8. CHISA.TO; oh, yes, those hands can be ghastly.. XÞ I got a pair of fist hands in the preorder, and they had really big chunks of extra resin inbetween the fingers etc. I attacked them with an exacto-knife and then sanded for the life of me.. But I enjoyed it a bit too! Some elbow grease does a great lot in the bonding process. XD

    9. well if you have the lusis faceplate you can see that it doesn't come with a head backing. the backing comes with the body, which is why when people make unoa hybrids out of faceplates they have to make head backs themselves. You'll be able to easily interchange the heads as the face plate locks into the backing which is secured onto the body when its strung. (meaning you don't have to take the whole head off to switch, just the face plate)

    10. delicateangel; I'd say those look more like danish names to me, judging from the lettering. ^^

    11. Hello Rive : )
There are very good quality masks that take out particles
far finer than resin, including paint fumes etc, check out
the higher end ones and you will be fine :)

    12. My optional kitty ears have sharp spots from where it was in the mold, so I'm going to use an exact-o knife and then sand them. There are two kinds of masks for small particle dust that I know of - the cheaper but still effective kind and the expensive impressive kind, they both work great. When I sand I do it in water but use a one of the small masks, just to be on the safe side.

    13. Do you only sand the seams? I thought I read somewhere that they need to be lightly sanded all over to get rid of the shine.

    14. I'd like to know this too; will sanding help or do they need to be coated?

    15. hmm, for the shine, I've heard a good bath with a Mr. magic clean eraser and gentle dish soap works and a coating of msc. I really don't want to sand the whole doll. >< omg, the wait to find out more info is killing me!

    16. I got a Dozing Lusis in the last parts order and I opened her eyes ... what do you think!?

Thinking I might get a full Sist in this pre-order ;)

    17. Log into your Crescent-shop account.

      http://www.crescent-shop.com

Look for the News message about the Unoa Girls Preorder - read it and click the link in it.

Note - I thought I read in this thread that the prices they quote are less than what you end up paying. I could be wrong but I thought people said you send up paying some amount over $500 after other fees are added. Check a bit back in this thread for more info on that - I am having a hard time connecting to DoA tonight (it keeps going away)

If you log into your Crescent account and the news message is not there for you, this is a copy of it. But you can only use the link to the sales page if you are logged into your account first.

    18. This time you will need the 12mm size. :sweat

    19. Your words makes think about if I'm taking more pics onf my Lusis or Sist. Actually I have a lot of pic of Lusis and few ones of my Sist but thats because my Sist is just 3 month old :sweat

      A picture for you :)

Definitely Sist girls are really cute!

    20. Here's a pic of my often neglected Sist. She just demands so little attention compared to her sister!

    21. Haha! Actually, it was more scary for me than for her. I loved my little flat-chested girl! But yeah, she's grown up a bit, and I think she's happy with her curves now ^^

Chopsart: your Sist is such a cutie!

And to add to the Sist-drool factor, here's a picture of my twins, Tinka and Teagan:

    22. I won her in the past Lottery she s around three months old. Still looking for *her look* for that reason but I have few pics of both girls together. Check my Flickr there are several Unoa pics

    23. Sorry for the delay in replying to this as I have been off the forum the last week, but...

I translated this exact piece of information right here in this thread weeks ago, in April in fact:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1843190&postcount=1269
and in addition I added it to the first post so that people would not miss it:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1375622&postcount=1
      Oh well, I try. :)

    24. waiting for a lusis- but I finally got my faceplates painted up- that was fun for my first try! does anyone use 10mm for unoa? the 11s I have seem big, and won't sit flush to the eye because there is limited space.

please look at the link it tells the description and what not. I am still debating on whether or not to get the 1.5. for the 1.5 i like the torso joint and how it hides the cuts in the joints better. i guess i have time to think about it because i will have to wait on the next ordering period possibly.

    26. [IMG]

I did the manicure and blushing work for this. look in ebay if you're interested in manicures. if i get enough requests about it then i will post up an auction earlier. but since I am still kind of working on my doll I will put up an auction later.

    28. haruko - just to get you started...

I know this isn't the right thread for this but I want to give people some paths to follow...

I believe any Narae clothes except tight items in non-stretch will fit Unoa, and vice versa for Unoa clothes fitting Narae (except Unoa's legs are (I think) 1/2 inch shorter so slacks that end at Unoa's ankle may be a bit short on Narae). I would just avoid skintight jeans, etc, unless you know they fit the doll you are buying them for. Unoa's large bust is .3 inch larger than Naraes, so the small bust Unoa is probably smaller than Narae's.

BTW - anyone have a small-bust measurement for Unoa? I did not see one in the Unoa FAQ
      http://www.rakurakutei.com/theloft/unoa_faq.htm

Narae's also generally wear Unoa size shoes when available, but other shoes that fit Narae well should fit Unoa (Narae's foot is slightly longer).

If I am correct, then this thread that lists sources for Narae clothes should be a good start:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/search.php?searchid=3565228

And Ajumapama still sells Unoa clothes. They just stopped selling all shoes as far as I know. But they only do periodic orders in the US store, usually when a collection is released, and then the store preorders the items from the Asian company.

      http://www.ajumapamausa.com/UNOA/UnoaProducts.html

And several DoA members make lovely Unoa clothes (Brennil, Flonne, and more)

      Good Unoa threads:
      Unoa Discussion
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107759
Unoa Fashion Show (fairly new - clothes are shown and identified)

2007 Waiting for Unoa Girls thread
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148737

And yeah - the place for this discussion is the Unoa Discussion thread, not here. I am more concerned with helping anyone who still is having trouble paying.

      Carolyn

    29. Hi and welcome to Unoa obsession!

      Here is the Unoa FAQ
      http://www.rakurakutei.com/theloft/unoa_faq.htm

And here is the Unoa discussion thread:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107759

It's already been mentioned that a long-awaited preorder for Unoa 1.5 girls (Lusis and Sist) just ended.

If you have the money by whenever everyone starts to receive their Unoas from this preorder (November-ish for international preorders, not sure when Japanese orders will be shipped), there may be more than the usual number of unopened kits on the auctions (Ebay and Yahoo!Japan) and maybe in the Marketplace. You might catch one sold at a reasonable price then, or even a completed doll.

I am assuming you are asking about Unoa Lusis and Sist, or the matching boys. That style of Unoa has an old version (1.0) and new version (1.5) with some skin tone difference and some posing enhancments. If you are asking about the slimmer more fashion-body Unoa 2.0 Cream and Mocha, they were only sold once (I believe). I have seen unused or assembled kits come up for auction of all versions, if you watch for them.

The version numbers are a bit deceiving because the selling order was (I think):

      Unoa 1.0
      Unoa 1.5
      Unoa 2.0
      Unoa 1.5

Usually an open Unoa pre-order is about every 6 months and is either for girls (of one version) or boys or option parts (not for all at once). Each pre-order is for a different one of these categories, or sometimes something new. The last two preorders were options parts, then the 1.5 girls, and the next is supposed to be 1.5 boys.

Many of us who ordered 1.5 girls this pre-order have been waiting about 2 years since the last open 1.5 girls preorder. Hopefully the next one will be sooner. In between they might have a quite-limited lottery sale of leftovers where they randomly pick from everyone who wants to buy. So make sure you keep watching for any notice of one of those.

Sometimes people who have trouble waiting will either pay more for a resale (especially an attractively completed doll that is just like they want), or build a hybrid Unoa. You can find painted and unpainted Unoa faceplates in resales (price is a bit inflated right now). A doll creator sells custom headbacks in the Marketplace that fit the Unoa faceplates. And I think people have used a couple of different bodies for these. I believe one is Minifee body. Unfortunately, all of that together including shipping (i.e. a faceplate at auction, a head back, and a body proportional with Unoa's head and in a similar skin tone) could end up costing almost as much as a Unoa kit at preorder.

A great way to stay informed about international Unoa offerings is to open a free account at http://www.crescent-shop.com (Japanese sales agent for all Unoa international orders). The account is free unless you add money to allow you to also bid on Yahoo Japan auctions.

Once you create your account, and activate it, go to your Profile and in the Rare Item box type the word Unoa (and I also check BJD as an item I like in the category checkboxes). Save your Profile. If you can, also add crescent-shop.com as a friend to any spam filter you are using. Now, whenever there is a Crescent-shop announcement about an upcoming pre-order or lottery sale, you should get the news as an email also!

I'm not saying you should buy a Unoa instead of saving for college, but I hope you can work out both. A lot of people, including me, just wait until the preorder and the finances are both right, and then get their Unoa.

      Good luck!
      Carolyn

    30. Here are some general instructions on how Unoas are ordered that I wrote for someone else:

      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2177492&postcount=1570

When Crescent announces a preorder or other Unoa News, you will get email too if you do what I say with the Rare Item box in your Profile.

Then you get an announcement in email or hear about a preorder on DoA, you log into Crescent once the preorder has started and there will be a more detailed message in your "Crescent News" list on your main page (right side). Look for the one about the Unoa Pre-order and read it - it will have a full description of the order, prices, procedure, and a link to click to get to the ordering page.

This won't work now, because the order is over. The next preorder seems like it will be 1.5 boys around November or December.

      Carolyn

    31. Here is an old pic of my hybrid, wearing a Lusis faceplate.
My Unoa hybrid is based on a Serendipity old skin body. Apparently, the "old" ones are a better match to the Unoas.

Tomorrow, I will take a photo with her new hands.

    32. I just got my doll a couple of days ago - I got Sist :). She ended up costing me about $440, maybe a little less, including fees, shipping, etc.

I've been working on sanding, blushing and assembling her over the past couple of days, I finished doing so yesterday:

      Sitting

      Face/chest

The last two have some dollie nudity, so I've linked them instead of posting images.

One thing I did notice was that the resin from the parts I ordered wasn't a perfect match with the doll itself, but it's kinda understandable and not anything you notice unless you look closely.

She didn't come with a stand or anything, just eyes and wig.

How's everyone else dealing with the wait?

    33. the pre order (loteria) was ended ! perhaps on second Market (Yahoo Auction) ;)

    34. Yay!! My girls are all put together! I posted a couple of pics here ^_^

    35. Carolyn...I'm having trouble deciding what tabs to remove from the Thigh Ball Joint too. :( If you figure it out, can you please post. I "think" those tabs on there need to be removed.

I Did remove the tabs from the Elbow Joint and it seems right since the arms fit together nicely.

I'm getting closer to being done. The stringing part is itimidating..but I'm sure I'll figure it out (if it kills me even) :) I'm getting excited. :)

    36. See the link on the previous page to elastic lengths that work well - just confusing as to how much to add for the knot.

I am done trimming except for those elbows, thigh tops, and face. Still have to sand...

      Carolyn

    37. Ok - I think I understand the thigh ball resin tabs. (note "think")

The thigh balls and thighs have letters in them L or R.
Get a matching thigh ball and thigh.

Hold both with their edge slots up and openings facing you.

The wide smooth tab on one edge of the thigh ball is a keeper and that will slide into the wide depression inside one side of the thigh opening.

Look opposite the wide depression, inside the thigh. There are two small round depressions.

Now look inside the thigh ball with the slotted edge up. At the top of the inner ring there are two ball-like bumps, one on each side of the slot. Stuck on top of and partially behind those is thin sprue (extra resin), and where that sprue meets the outer edge of the thigh ball it may join some more sprue along the edge on either side of the slot.

I am finding it very tricky to get that sprue out from over and behind the ball-like bumps. But I am getting close. A mini knife-edge file helps.

Edit - got it close enough to pop it in - now I can't get it out so I can sand and glue later!... nm got it off.

      Carolyn

    38. Carolyn - fold the elastic in half and measure where Rhian said. drop the ruler, keep your fingers on that spot where you measured - then make a knot RIGHT THERE. don't pull it tight - measure again and then you can still sort of move the knot up and down as you need to get that measurement, then tighten. the length should be 7 inches doubled RIGHT BELOW the knot. do the same for the 15. don't cut anything until after you've got a nice, tight knot, and the measurement is where you want it. THEN cut off any excess.

      HTH!

    39. Thanks! That should help everybody.

      Two more questions...

      1. Superglue type - liquid or the gel for porous materials?
      2. Trimming inside Lusis's mouth - when I look with a magnifier I can see a little rough ridge standing up at the back of her lower lip. If I need to get rif of that, how?

      Carolyn

    40. Both kind of Superglue will work on resin just fine. I use the gel because you can control where it goes better.

An Xacto knife will work very well to remove the ridge inside the mouth. Have you tried putting her "teeth" in yet? If you can't see anything showing when you look at her face with the "teeth" in I wouldn't bother with trying to remove the ridge.

CONGRATS to everyone on receiving there girls!!! :)

    41. Would an exacto knife work for the ridges in the eyes too?

    42. My girls together. This pic is horrible..but it's the best I can do without Natural light. I love her very much. :)

THANK YOU so much to everyone who gave help and instruction on putting this doll together. The tips in this thread helped alot.

      ~Meee

    43. Abby....since the joints "Click" into place...I think it's be okay. I used the Super Glue (Gel) Because I just didn't want to take any chances.

I redid my girls faceup and she stole the wig and outfit from my Hybrid. I like her with her new faceup much more :)

I hope everyone's having fun putting their kits together. ;)

    44. Everyones Girls Look Great! Its exciting to see all of them & have so many Arriving.

Here is Mine (No Name yet)-The face up is not by me. Its a Wink Face plate I got this summer.
It was fun to put her together. Easier then I thought it would be. Getting her feet on was hard!

    45. Is there a "getting started" thread with a list of all you need to sand/put together/take care of your bjd?
Because I had it very easy with Vaughne my first bjd(mnf shiwoo) and now my sist girl is coming and I have little clue as to how to take care of her and the procations for sanding and what not.
and http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183949 is very helpful but doesn't answer all my questions, but it's hard to get answers when you don't know the question to ask.

    46. loreax -

Kittywolf13 did a nice tutorial on putting together a Unoa:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183949

Read the comments there also, and the comments in this thread over the last few pages as several people including me got some questions answered about putting them together.

If you get stuck anywhere, ask here.

As for tools - for assembly you will need an Exacto knife for removing some extra tabs of resin left over from the molding process (aka sprue). You can see the black arrows at the start of the instructions and the tutorial to understand which are sprue and which are necessary protrusions for posing!

I also found some tiny knife-edge and pointy knife-edge files were helpful for some hard-to remove sprue.

Some "found" tools - a white stiff hanging tag from some newly bought clothes (or any sharp-cornered thick paper), and a narrow stick of emery board cut from one of those thin match-book style packs of emery boards (they are thinner than normal emery board). I use the emery stick to sand in tight places and the stiff paper tag corner to remove stubborn little loose bits of resin in the eyes and mouth. (and just FYI also great if any putty ever squeezes through to he front of an eye)

You need some sandpaper, I think Kittywolf used 360-600 grit range (US grit numbering, numbering is quite different in some other countries but there are conversion tables on the web). Wet/dry sanding materials give you the option of sanding wet to reduce dust. Conversion table to European ISO/FEPA grit numbering:

At one point in the construction you are supposed to use a bit of superglue.

A dust mask is a good idea. Resin dust is toxic to people, pets, etc.

For more info about seam removal and sanding in general see the Painting and Customization section of DoA. Ditto for information on faceups and the type of matte lacquer spray you have to spray before and after doing a faceup (normally Mr Super Clear Flat aka MSC is the main choice, but it is out of stock everywhere). Note that the spray is also toxic, must be used outdoors in suitable dry calm warm-enough weather. If you are not doing your own faceup and not blushing the body, then you do not need MSC.

The Unoa resin is nice and smooth and sometimes a bit shiny. But if you want to remove the seam lines or reduce the shine of some pieces, then sanding is necessary, and sanding will be needed where you remove some of the thick pieces of sprue (like back of heel).

    47. I got my girl yesterday, is an Unoa Lusis with big breast part and today I have finished the assembling and the face-up. This is the first time I do it by myself. Hope you like it. ;)
