Digital Macro Filters - Canon Rebel xti

Jan 10, 2011

    1. Hey guys! Okay so i got a set of Digital Macro Filters for christmas (for my canon rebel xti). However, when i attach them on to my camera, my camera cant focus through the thicker ones, only the smallest which doesn't offer much 'macro'ing. Here is a link to the set: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Conce...2274/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1294679940&sr=8-4

I really want the chance to take better in focus shots of my boys. My problem is, if im ever too close my flash goes off, wipes out any details, and im forced to move back from the doll and get a further distance shot instead. I know of flash diffusers but sometimes my camera just refuses to focus.

I need any advice you guys can give me. How do i make these filters work? Will they work? Or should i just invest in a macro lens instead, if so which lens?

Thank you all for any help!

    2. These filters affect the working focus distance, allowing you to get closer to the subject and therefore increase magnification. The stronger the filter, the closer the focus becomes at any point in the lens focus range. You need to move back and forwards to find the new focus point. If it isn't giving the right strength, you need to change to a different one.

I did a writeup when I played with a similar set in the past, which can be found here. Do note the performance can and will depend on the lens used too.

A macro lens will be a lot easier to work with, but you're spending a lot more too!

    3. Popo - Thank you, that tutorial is really helpful. I was curious if the reason i was struggling so much was because my room is so dim, therefore making it harder for the camera to get the proper focus with lack of light on the subject itself. I'll play with it some more to see what i can figure out.
