Different Photostories for Same Dolls

Jan 14, 2011

    1. I've been wondering about this for awhile. Has anyone ever made different photostories, as in different setting/names/plot/history/etc, with the same dolls? I'm still a bit undecided on my dolls' sexuality and character background. So I was thinking of testing out different options in different photostories since I have so many interesting ideas in my head that I want to try but not enough dolls to do all of them without repeating the cast.

So have you either used the same doll and changed their history/character in each photostory or do you think that it should remain just one series type photostory for the doll?

I know my wording may sound a little confusing, but does anyone get what I'm saying?

I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong thread or seems off-topic or even if this type of thread already exist.

    2. I haven't actually done any photostories, but my dolls have a very flexible canon. Right now I like to think of them as rich teenagers, but they've been shabby city kids, musicians, actors, disillusioned youth, etc. I think it's really fun to have a background and setting that you can change. They have the same names and the same general personality, but I love leaving wiggle room.

When I feel my boys are a bit more complete and can be photographed for photostories, they absolutely will have different kinds of stories.

    3. My dolls have to have to have only one personality/character/story at a time. They may start as one character and change if my doll plans change (which is what's been happening with my crew now), or if I feel that it's just not working with that particular doll, but otherwise they remain the same people. It would be hard for me to connect with them otherwise. However, if you are able to have one doll represent multiple people, it would save a heck of a lot of money and shelf space ;)

    4. It's like acting, Your dolls have the ability to be who ever! Of course, a lot of people give their dolls personalities or base them of of one of their original art characters. The truth is, some people are just to creative for that! ^-^

    5. Well, I have 2 dolls on the way, and plans to get a twin for my Four Sisters doll, but until I buy her twin, I may put her in different clothes and wigs and make her 'be' her twin in photostories.

    6. I don't have any dolls on hand yet so I haven't done any photostories, but I have plans to! After I buy and receive a 2nd 70cm male, I'm going to try and choose ONE specific background story for them. However, I already have so many ideas in my head / so many different concepts regarding how their characters could interact with each other.... I want to photograph and have them play out all the parts! :) So I'm planning on choosing one backstory to stick with, but having them roleplay a lot so I can in a sense portray all the different stories I came up with for them.

    7. When I first get a doll (or doll head), their story is so fluid and flexible, as well as their character. I don't really know where I want their story or character to go, and I can spend 6 months deciding on anything. Usually, though, once decided, their character/backstory is set.

Which is not to say that I won't "crack" a pair of characters or whatnot for poos and giggles.

    8. @yourlegsgrow- that would be interesting, I want to see when you finally do put some up

@Taco- it would save on money definitely.

My conflict now is that I have more girls than I do boys. I love yaoi so I want to do yaoi photostories too but I also want each of my girls to have someone >.< so I don't know where to make my boys in love with each other or pair them with my girls. Ah the drama of like hetero and homo couples =3

    9. Hmm...I think, for me, this would be insanely difficult and almost feel like sacrilege just because they each have such deeply ingrained personalities and stories in my head by this point. But I can see playing around with backgrounds when you're not sure exactly what you want for a doll. And, besides, creativity is a leading liberty in this hobby; it should be abused as much as possible :)

Of course, getting a new boy and not knowing exactly where they fit leaves me some wiggle room as regards their backstory, so I'll play around with it for a while. But, like bewaretheshort1 said, once they have the character, they're rarely pulled out of it. Unless I'm feeling really stupid and want to mess with my characters XD

    10. I look on my dolls as resin actors who can take on temporary roles for photoshoots, etc. It seems a shame not to exploit the wig and eye changing and all the different looks you can get. Like actors they can still have their own individual styles when not being photographed, etc.

    11. that makes a lot of sense when you put it that way :o

    12. I personally feel like giving up any semblance of a canon by now. :sweat It's more fun doing short stories. =_=

    13. i have two storylines, though i haven't really done any photostories (except for one test run kind of) for the first. all of my characters are from a more elaborate story, but i started doing just silly photostories with them to get used to doing photostories in the first place, and get more familiar with the characters (and give the dolls time to settle into more permanent looks). the characters in the non-canon storyline are mostly the same but less serious, while the canon storyline has a more solid setting and such. there are a couple of pairings that are different between each storyline. if i were to do the canon storyline in photostories, i'd definitely want to do it properly, with props and backgrounds that are all to scale.

    14. You can always have stories with your same characters in different era's (past, present, future etc) it all depends on how "you" want to go about it. I have found that this if done right can make pretty compelling stories.

    15. I've actually considered doing photostories of two of my boys' pasts, but I do not have all the characters that would be part of that story in doll form nor do I really want to get them (they're more background or minor characters but still essential to the story). If I were to ever actually do the story, I've contemplated having some of my other dolls do a sort of "double duty" as a different character in the background story. In my consideration, however, I could not in good conscience have dolls that are supposed to be children or in any way related to them be the ones doing the double duty as it would just be too weird. I would still consider the doll to have the "main" personality. If my rambling makes any kind of sense. :sweat

    16. I have been out of the loop for a while now but my dolls have always been based in one particular storyline . It just keeps adapting to the world they are in. Lately I have been wanting to have them travel back in time a little. This is inspired by my recent works on period clothing. So I think it could be done to have differennt names /chars to go with a different look

    17. Mine all have one character, but all the characters are part of the same world. They each have a backstory that's part of their personal 'canon', and then I decide on a whim whether and how they interact with one another within their 'world'. This way, I can do photostories with one or two dolls that seemingly have nothing to do with any of the others, or stories with 6 or 7 dolls that are more involved and cross plotlines. Not that I post any on DoA! But for my own sanity, it's much easier.
