Did your FIRST doll come with a faceup?

Dec 16, 2013

1. When you ordered your first doll did you get him/her with a faceup? Did you send them away to a faceup artist? Or did you do it yourself? I feel like I would enjoy doing faceups, but Id be so nervous about getting it JUST RIGHT that I ended up getting the factory faceup. Wondering how other people feel.

2. I am ordering my first doll with company face up :) Eventually I will give it a go myself but for my first I would like her to come with a face :D

3. That's sort of how I feel :-) I'm waiting four months for a doll with no other dolls to occupy me. I don't want to wait even longer until my skills are good enough to make her look the way I want!

4. Some people are just artistically gifted enough to get a decent result on the very first try... I am not one of those people. lol

Mine came with a face up. Although part of me thought I could probably just wing it on my own, there was no way I was going risk it, and butcher up my first doll.
So glad I didn't risk it, I still really don't have the confidence to pull that sort of thing off. Paper and resin are just too different.
Eventually when I feel ready/ more experienced I might try it, however I'm still thinking I might just leave it to someone else expertise to do it for me.

5. My first doll was a secondhand doll, so he had his faceup from his prevous owner. I've done faceups myself before, but I'm not particularly good at it. I have bought dolls blank before though and either painted them myself or had an artist paint them.

6. My first BJD is an Asleep Eidolon Blueberry I bought from Mint on Card. I bought her with a face up. One that I adored, but unfortunately need to replace :sigh: I decided to get her with a face up because I thought I would do a horrible job at doing her face up and wanted a doll that was ready to go out of the box. I recommend getting a doll with a face up if you love the company's face up and if you want a doll photo ready out of the box. My second and third doll were blank and it was a bit grueling to have to wait more time to have them ready (I sent them to a face up artist.) If you feel you would enjoy doing face ups and have the materials, I would recommend you bought your doll blank and did their face up. I finally got the guts to do a face up on one of my dolls and it definitely helped me to bond with her (she was almost going to be sold but doing hr face helped me identify what I wanted to do with her.)

7. I purchased a doll with a face-up, but got it a custom one a year later. It gave me time to enjoy my doll and save the money to get a really, really nice face-up for it.

8. My very first did come with a faceup, he was purchased as an in-stock doll ready to go, faceup and all. I discovered after getting him home, though, that I really, really didn't like it, and he didn't appeal to me until I wiped it and did my own (amateur) faceup on him. He's had a couple of revisions since then, and I've ordered all my dolls blank after that experience; the only ones with faceups not done by myself are a second-hand tiny with a faceup that I altered a bit to fit the character, and one that I commissioned from someone I knew could do a perfect job on him. The more I do, the better I'm getting, though!

9. Nope, I ordered his head blank because I knew I wanted to do his faceup myself. The first one was pretty messy and I used MSC semi-gloss instead of MSC flat so he ended up way too shiny, haha. It was a nice experience though, and most of my dolls have their faceups done by me :)

10. My first doll came with a face up. It was nice because she was second hand but the previous owner didn't charge extra for the face up so I got a great deal because I'm actually in love with every detail on her beautiful face.

11. Yes. I figured it was safer that way.

12. Up until the last minute I was planning on getting the company faceup on my first doll, for exactly the reason you mention: she was my dream doll and even though I've been painting for years I'd never painted a resin doll face, so I was afraid I wouldn't get her right. But I ended up getting her blank and doing her faceup myself after all, and I'm glad I did. I'm really happy with her now, she looks just how I'd always envisioned her.

13. All of my dolls have company faceups. I can't really do them myself (I've never tried, but I'm not really artistic like that anyway so I would rather put my efforts towards improving my other artistic-y skills) and I don't have the patience to send a just-arrived doll off to someone else for a faceup. So I always get them with a company one. I think that was an especially good choice for my first doll, because I was really nervous about spending that much money on something that may or may not turn out to be fun for me, and I wanted to do everything possible to increase the odds of my first experience in the hobby being positive. For me that meant a lot of things, including getting a doll with a face I liked right out of the box, and since I liked the default company faceup that came with my first doll that worked out really well.

14. My first resin came with her default face-up. I added onto it later on though; blush, freckles and such since she came with such a simple one. I might wipe it one day, but I still like it for now. xD

I like doing face-ups though, they're fun~

15. Yes my first doll was ordered with face up
one outfit

he had no shoes for about 1-2 months..... Shoes actually helped him stand

16. Yes, in fact he still does have the same faceup but is a bit old and is chipping :( it makes me sad because I really liked it...

17. My first BJD was secondhand, he had his faceup from Tensiya. It was perfect because I had planned on getting the same faceup from them when I ordered him, so it was wonderful that the Hound I found on the market was from there/had that face up. Talk about perfect!

18. My first doll came with a company face-up. Up until her arrival, I had expected that if I didn't like it, I could re-do it myself. Then I saw the details and thought: "whoa. This is the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen. Clearly there are more prerequisites to face-upping than I thought."

I've since done some face-ups myself, but I have always felt that getting my first with a face-up was the right way to go for me.

19. My first doll came with faceup. I did get him secondhand off ebay. It looks like the company faceup, but with some modest additions. One day I plan on adding a bit more contouring and some freckles, but for now I adore him.

20. I think face up for the 1st doll is a good idea~
at least it can save some time from waiting:)

21. My first doll will have his default face make-up, as I liked how it looked on the site. The second one will be blank

22. Yeah, he did. I need to change it as soon as I get my own materials, though.
My second and fourth also had or have company face ups, and my third is secondhand so she has a face up too.

23. mine did - then I bought a couple of blank dolls but I was never happy with my faceup efforts, so now I only buy dolls with company faceup - I figure what's an extra $40 when I've already spent so much!

24. Yes. I was too nervous to try and do a faceup on my first doll!

25. Yeah she did, and it really bothered me because it wasn't done properly. I'd thought it'd just chipped, but now that I look back on it, I realise they forgot to do part of her lip! It bothered me so much that I wiped it off almost immediately!

26. No he didn't. And the dolls after usually don't have them as well, or their face-up gets wiped soon. It's not that I do face-ups myself (with the first, I tried and then discovered that I really don't like doing this), but I just like to comission someone and get a doll that is truly my own :).

I do have one doll with a factory face-up though. My IH Kamau's face is just perfect and they've painted him so well. If you like the face-up, why not order it?

27. I got my first doll with factory face-up(a pukifee ante) becouse even though I knew that at some point I would redo it, I just wanted her to be "complete" first since it was my first experience with bjds. I also bought my second doll with face-up since she was cheaper with face-up and as a fullset(I splitted the fullset) than just basic without :)

However I no longer buy with face-up though becouse I like to paint them myself :3

28. When I ordered my first BJD, I got him without a faceup. I knew I was going to commission one for him when he arrived. I just wanted my first BJD to be done by someone more experienced, and now I love having all of my faceups commissioned. I'm planning to work on my faceups, but I want to get a couple practice heads first.

29. My first doll did have a faceup. I got him secondhand, but he would have had one anyway. I wasn't confident enough to do my own (still not quite there) and I knew that the company faceups for Bobobie (he's an Apollo) were affordable.

30. Fortunately my good friend was willing to try doing a faceup as she was selling me a blank new doll. I didn't feel confident that I could paint a face & I hadn't learned enough about commissioning a faceup. The doll kept that face for 3 years before all my newer dolls with better faceups finally convinced me she needed a change. Since that first doll, I've ordered some dolls blank because I knew just who I wanted to commission for the right look and I've ordered some dolls with faceups because I love the company faceup offered. Painting & drawing still aren't my preferred art form so I haven't tried my hand at faceups, there are too many sewing projects to take the time to learn!

31. She did indeed. I was too scared to do faceups myself then and I wanted to make sure she looked perfect. And she came out looking just like the promo photos. She's my only doll with a factory faceup!

32. My first doll was from Dollzone, back when they were really cheap and I think the faceup was like $30 or something, so I went for it. I wanted a doll who would look 'done' from near the first day and having a company faceup aided that. From then on, I've had blank dolls only. This is partly because company faceups, while beautful, are generally quite bland to me. They also cost a lot of money for what they are. I'd rather send my head off to an artist who will give me a unique faceup that is exactly what I want. I'm also more inclined to do my own now. Also, a few of my dolls are second-hand, and they also came blank.

33. My first doll was purchased with a company face up because I adored the face up! If I hadn't, I would have tried it myself or sent the doll to an artist. I was satisfied with the face up that I received on that first doll, so all in all it went well.

34. I got my first and most if my other dolls without faceups. Even though I'm artistic and could already draw well, it took me years of practice to get to where I am now. Faceups are a different ball game.

35. My first doll is on her way now, and she is a PKF Zoe. I purchased her secondhand from Xhanthi, and as she came with the option of a faceup, I couldn't resist! :) I do plan to do future faceups myself, as I believe it will help with the bonding process.

36. My first doll came with a default faceup. It was pretty bland, and I did eventually have it redone, but I knew I wouldn't be able to do it myself and I wanted her to be ready to go right out of the box. I'd love to be able to do my own faceups but I have a movement disorder that causes my hands to shake pretty bad.

37. I bought my first doll blank because I didn't love the company face up. I have no experience doing face ups, and am too paranoid and too poor to pay someone else to do it. A year after I bought her, she is still blank. My second came with a face up, and I paid for the ones for my third and forth. I plan to do some of them myself, but so far lack the materials and experience.

38. Yes, she did. I bought an in stock doll at MoC, and that's what they had. It's probably for the best, as I had never seen one in person before. I don't know if I would have been quite as smitten if she had been blank upon arrival. I redid it about a year later, but am still glad she had one from day one!

39. My first doll was second hand and had face-up done by her previous owner. My girl got custom face-up a bit later (done by one of my friends).

40. The first blank doll which arrived to me was the 6th head from all the heads i ever owned in general, and it happened after four years in hobby. It also was the first doll i've ever gave to the artist. The rest of them arrived with company face-ups, basically because i did not want them to stay blank until they get painted. Wasn't really bothered 'cause didn't want anything special. Basics were ok. Two of them still have those faceups for years now. Others are either sold or disassembled, so this doesn't count.
So, long story short, better take the faceup, imo.

41. Yep my first doll came with a company face up, when I ordered her I knew very little about the dolly world. All four of my girls so far have had company face ups. I plan for my next doll to be blank, I cant stand the thought of waiting all that time only have a doll send away again so I am gonna try and do my next dolls face up by myself. Its going to be very strange unboxing my first blank doll, I think I will find it very hard to like her at all until she is finished

42. Yes, my first doll came with a face up. It is/was a FCS F-05. I chose the face up myself.

43. Yes, all my dolls so far have come with a company faceup. I either need to find a faceup artist whose work I really like, or else I need a lot more faceup practice myself, before I'll feel comfortable ordering a blank head!

44. If I remember correctly my first and second doll came with company face-up. After that I learnt to do it myself and switched to ordering only blank dolls/heads. The only exception was a LE fullset doll I bought secondhand who also came with a default face-up, however that didn't stay long before I wiped it off and painted my own. Painting my dolls FUs is very important to me and an essential step in the bonding process, so much that I only own dolls I painted myself and I wouldn't dream of commissioning someone to do it for me. This hobby is an artistic outlet for me and commissioning someone would be the opposite effect.

45. It depends upon which doll you consider my first. Technically I ordered my Miro MSD's first but I only had bodies for a while. My RS Ju came totally faced up and dyed and I had plans to work with her as is but then I made the mistake of putting her down near a wet spot and her dye ran all over the place. Apparently her sealer didn't hold up. I ended up stripping her back to NS and now she looks like a completely different doll than the one I intended her to be. I still haven't faced up all the dolls I've bought this year. I've been more into getting the small collection I want assembled than in doing all that. I've been really sick a lot the past few months. Chronic illness thing. When it's like this I'm just not up to a lot of painting and stuff. It will all get done eventually. I go through these long miserable flares with this. Eventually it's bound to gets better for a while. When this one does I'll get back to playing with my dolls more.

46. I ordered my first doll with a faceup because I figured there was no way I could do one myself.

47. I ordered my first doll pre made and with a face up. It was the exact one from the picture and I'm still in love with it.
My second one that I have coming soon was also ordered with a face up which I do plan to change later.
I just know that I won't be able to commission someone right away and it would bother me to have her sitting around with no face up.

48. I wasn't too fond of the factory face up for my boy, so I ordered him without. I was definitely not prepared to do his face up myself so I sent him away. Having a headless body around for a couple weeks was quite odd, to say the least

49. I fell in love with my first because of her faceup. I asked the company in a really green kind of way where I could get that exact faceup and they said it was her factory faceup so I could just order it. Luckily I did too because she was so small I think I would have completely screwed it up if I did it.

50. I ordered my first doll blank, but since then I have ordered other dolls with factory faceups and I think it is definitely worth the extra money.

51. My first doll I ordered without a faceup. I had already planned to do the faceup myself. While waiting for my doll, I looked up all sorts of faceup tutorials and such and got all the materials I needed. A few days after my doll arrived I did her faceup and it actually turned out pretty good in my opinion. Since then I've redone her faceup, but yeah.
And for my second doll I am ordering him with a faceup, but I will be adding details to it when I get him.

52. I ordered Ann with the custom face up, both because I love it and I'm a little scared about do it a totally new >__<
Mayyybe, in the future I'll try to re-do it ♥ but, right now I really love it <:

53. I bought my first one without a face-up. The face-up artist I had asked to do him, fell of the face of the earth and I did (a horrible) face-up myself. Later I send him of to Soft-Poison and she made him gorgeous. The second one did come with a face-up though. xD

54. I've never paid for a faceup, either from a company it an artist, ever. Even my first doll came blank ^^ because I'm artistic I told myself I would save money by Doug face-ups myself and I'm very happy I don't have to pay to get my dolls painted :,D

55. I am planning to buy my first BJD after the holidays, and am ordering a faceup to be included. I am too nervous to work on such a big investment at this point. I want to do more faceup work on less expensive dolls, like Pullips, then graduate to resin BJDs.

56. My very forst doll was a Pukifee Luna and yes she came with face-up. I wasn't part of DoA at that point so I didn't know lots of people that did doll face-ups. Plus I really loved her default face-up :)

57. I just got my first BJD about two hours ago and she (Volks F-01 / Nana) has a company face up. :)

58. Yes, my first doll came with a company face-up. Sometimes it can be hard to choose the most suitable face-up for a doll, but in this case the doll on the promotional photos looked just like the image of a perfect doll that I had in my head.

59. My first doll came with a factory faceup. My second doll is and anthro and I am going to try doing her faceup myself.

60. My first doll was a secondhand one, and he had (still has!) his default faceup. I bought him as a fullset, because I wanted him to have clothing and things when he arrived (even though I knew I'd change many of them) and with the faceup because though I knew I wanted to learn to do them, I wanted to see what a faceup looked like first. I'm really glad I got him with the faceup, because my first ones (done on a practice head) were pretty bad, and I may not have realized just how bad they were if I hadn't had his gorgeous faceup to compare to. Now I prefer to buy my dolls blank and paint them myself, but it was important to me that the first one come with a faceup.
