Just For Fun Den of Angels Mods: Ask Us Anything!

Aug 1, 2018

    1. Welcome to 'Mods: Ask Us Anything'!

Did you ever want to know a bit more about the mods? How long have they been in the hobby? What is their typical day like on DoA? What do they like most about being a mod? What is their day job? Well, you've come to the right place! In this thread, you'll be able to interact with the mods in a casual setting!

Questions may be addressed to a specific moderator or to the mod team in general. These mods are available to answer your questions:
Please keep the topics light-hearted and fun – this is not the place to debate rules. Please post in Ask the Moderators if you need help with a specific situation or technical problem.

    2. I'd love to know what the mods think has been the biggest change they have noticed in the hobby since they joined?

Also, what pets (if any) you have?

    3. I'd enjoy hearing how do you sandwich your 'day job' in with your mod job?
Also, what is your favorite snack? :cake:

    4. @flowergirl The biggest change I've noticed is how many new doll artisans there are. :) To me it seems like I come across a new company with new dolls every few weeks! Years ago, you really only saw the big companies, and some of the more well-known single-artist outfits. I love that there are more and more people making new dolls all the time! :D

      Also, I have 2 cats and 2 fish. :kitty1

@MacaronTea I'm actually a homemaker :) I handle all the chores/cooking/cleaning/gardening/renovations and stuff at home. I also have some side-business stuff (art stuff, my sister and I make soap together, and I sometimes get the odd cleaning side-side gig :3). It can be hard to do it all and keep up with DoA sometimes, but since I do most all of my work from home, I can leave my computer on and check in from time to time throughout the day. :)
And it also helps that there are a lot of mods! We all have each others' backs, so no single one of us gets overwhelmed with mod work.

*_* And I can only pick one favorite snack?!? I think (for right at this very second, anyway) it might be cheese and crackers. :) 'Prolly brie, or maybe manchego. :XD:
      Cool Ranch Doritos
      garlic pickles
      dry roasted nuts
raw veggies and hummus and/or ranch dressing
      bear claws
Kinder eggs (but only the ones with the good toys! :eusa_naug)

    5. Looking back on your starts in this hobby, is where you are now with your dolls (and related stuff) anything like what you'd planned back then?

    6. I agree with Arimir. There are so many more companies and artesians now!

      I have a cat and a conure/

I have a new ish job, so it's been getting most of my attention for the last few months.

      I love popcorn and blueberries

Not in the slightest. I started mostly with Delfs, and now I have mostly Volks. XD

    7. I'd actually really love to know what got you guys into the hobby and what were your first bjds?? :)

    8. I would really love to know, how much time do all of you need to invest weekly in taking care of Den of Angels?
It seems to be quite the investment and I am so grateful for your work!

Knitting together this huge community surely isn't your everyday easy task. O.o

    10. My question is for the mod team in general

Im now fascinated with sock dresses, it seems that it was a really big infamous? trend back then and somehow got lost

I want to see the moderators earliest sock dresses too haha 8-)

    11. @vicemage Not really! :XD: Back when I started, I ended up getting my hands on (mostly) that type of J-rock inspired clothing that was really popular in the mid-2000s. :3 These days, I like a much broader style, which I wouldn't have expected back then! That, and I can say I have attempted pretty much every aspect of the hobby, though back when I started, I wouldn't have thought I'd love doing faceups so much! :D

@sovayne I first got introduced to BJDs in college when a friend of mine had one on campus. :) My first BJD was an Angel of Dream Chen!

@Lawrichai It depends on what my average week is like, but, I will try to hop online once a day, or at least once every 2 or 3 days if I'm particularly busy. And when I do, can spend anywhere from as little as an hour a day doing mod duties, to 5 or 6 if there's a lot to do. :3nodding: Sometimes it's not all work though, I do like to explore and post replies for fun/to help others out.

@Elysion gear I actually hate almost all water! I don't trust my local tap water to actually drink it (it's kind of discolored and smells a little chlorine-y and/or sulphur-y), so we get spring water to actually drink. But I still don't like it unless I can use it to make coffee or tea or some kind of fruit/herb/botanical infusion or something! :chibi

@GreenTeaSlug I never actually made a sock dress! :blush I don't know the full real history behind the notoriety, but I'd wager it was because it was an inexpensive, easy way to make an outfit for a doll. Back in the early days, there wasn't as much variety, nor easily accessible ways to buy made-for-BJD clothes, so a lot of folks would do the sock dress because there weren't any other good options. :whee:

      • Woah, that's a good question. I don't know :sweat

      • Yep, four adult cats and currently four floofy velociraptors *cough* kittens *cough* and lots of cute jumping spiders all over my desk and at the window (although they are wild, I enjoy their company and they're totally my pets. Yes. My pets. Yep yep.).

      Fluffy - The oldest

      Winston - Fluffy's daughter

      Lakrits - Scared shy guy

Velociraptor #1 "Titi-oo / Frank" (white with dark spots)
Velociraptor #2 "Gråan / Den gråa" (gray)
Velociraptor #3 "Hattifnatt" (black and white)
Velociraptor #4 "Siv" (mostly dark and striped)

      • What day job? Is there such a thing as a day job? :ablink:
I'm working from home mostly, and I'm about to start up my own company so exciting things. At the moment I've had a bit of a tumble with life so I haven't been as active with my mod duties as before, but when things are normal I do mod work in between working. I take a break from work and I go on here to check if there's anything I can work on. As long as I'm not getting stressed out it works very well, and I feel like I can contribute to both things :)

      • Cheese. I like cheese ~

      • I think in some ways it's kind of like how I imagined about two years into the hobby. When I first started out though, I said I only really wanted TWO dolls  As for style, I think it's actually fairly similar. I don't outgrow styles that much so my dolls kind of looks the same as when I started, except better face-ups since I got better at that ~

      • I found the hobby by chance, from a photo shown somewhere and I traced it back to BJDs. I saw the price and got scared, but a year or two later I actually stumbled across more photos and I did some reasearch, got my first one and that was it ~ My first one is Pocca, which I still have :3
      [IMG]

      • No idea. Absolutely no idea. It depends a lot. Like I said in an earlier reply, life hasn't been particularly kind to me lately, so I've honestly not been able to do much for a while. It can certainly be a lot of work at times though. I had no clue how much time I would have to spend when I first became a mod, it's hard to imagine if you haven't done anything like this before(which I hadn't). It also depends a lot on how many of us are active at the moment, the more of us, the less amount of work on my plate.

I have spent hours on some convos to members. Like one single convo took me one or two hours to write, some more than that >____> I think part of it is just that I'm a bit of a perfectionist and English isn't my first language. I'm really terrified to make spelling errors.

      • Well, not the one in Falun. It tastes like iron-ish. I also don't like the tap water from the bathroom sink, probably something to do with the pipes or the faucet (it recently broke, but kind of works anyway but water taste slightly weird). The other tap water is fine though, I like the water here. I like plain tap water.

And before someone thinks "eww", tap water is generally very clean in Sweden and safe to drink unless there's a leakage somewhere (in which case they notify people about it).

    12. Sorry, I have never made a sock dress! I can however show you one of the first things I made for my dolls:

I would give it a go sometime, just for the fun of it...but I have literally only a few pairs of all black socks. I rarely use socks because I wear tights and dresses all the time. The idea is quite fascinating though but I can see how it became an infamous trend for a while. I don't see many sock dresses anymore, but there definitely was a time when they were more common :)

    13. The selection! There are so many more companies/artists, types of dolls, sizes, changes in jointing, etc.
Also the artistry of faceups from both companies and artists has definitely improved.

And I have a cat named Fish, a cat named Darth, and probably about two dozen spiders that I'm constantly relocating to outside.

My mod job doesn't require me to be on at any specific time, so I just come on when I have time or if another mod needs me to look into something.
Snacks: depends on my mood - lately I've really been enjoying chile lime potato chips. I tend to like sweet or spicy things.

      Ahahaha no.

I was around from the beginning but couldn't justify buying a doll until 2005 when my friend brought over her first doll without warning and plopped it down on my floor - I ordered my own that day.
My first was a Volks SD10 Megu, which I never could get happy with and ended up selling a few years later.

It depends on the week and what is going on. During high activity periods I'm around and busy doing mod stuff about 20-30 hours a week and actively checking in or passively being available most of the time. When I'm less active it's probably closer to 8 to 10 hours a week spent on actual moderation and a higher percentage of my DoA time is passive activity.

I was going to say cold, but that's not entirely true. Cold and running is the best - none of this 'drinking out of a glass' stuff.

I never made a sock dress - my dolls got to wear togas until I got around to getting them clothing (sock dresses defeated my abilities)

    14. I always feel late to the party being on Pacific Time (and, OK, I'm definitely a night owl and get up late, which doesn't help!). :XD:

Biggest change since 2004--the huge variety of bjds available now... small artists to grops/companies. When I started it was difficult to get ANY bjd (only a few companies, 3 or 4--so when they were weren't having a new release or were sold out, there really was no other option but to wait). And only 60cm and a few 45cm--all human and anime-stylized (maybe some modest elf ears or tiny fangs).

No pets of my own, but I often pet-sit for my sister who has a beautiful siamese cat, a cute little rescue (mix of shiba, corgi and probably chihuahua), and a pool full of big koi fish.
      "Boba"

Badly... I'm self-employed as an artist/illustrator and I have been very bad at getting artwork done. I have a con coming up with an art show, so I have to finish several paintings, frame them, photo them, make prints--and probably will not succeed in getting it done on time: job fail!

Snack: LOVE snacks! I am so unhealthy!!! I love ice cream and cake (often together), Danish Waffles (not like waffles--crispy pastries with cream and jam filling that I will get shipped to me from Solvang, CA!)... doughnuts are yummy, too, and chocolate-covered strawberries! :chocoberry

NOooooOOoooooOOOoooooo!!!!!! I started out only wanting one or two... but now I'm in doll-hoarder territory (getting close to 100), and have enough stuff to stock a BIG bjd store. I seriously did not plan this! (That whole thing about the hobby changing--more choices and kinds of bjds... that really hit me hard--I like so many different kinds and styles!-- Plus... 14 years and not selling any dolls will do this!)

I've always loved dolls (I had a lot, but was not hoardery... or AS hoardery). I was looking to customize an obitsu 1/6 and was looking on ebay for wigs, and saw the very early one or two auctions for some wigs for bjds. No bjds being sold on ebay or on any English site yet--you had to go through agents and mostly had to assemble kits at that time (arond 2003 or earlier)... but saw a Satoko Ohno auction for a customized Volks and was entranced! (shocked at the prices--which were in the thousands). Eventually tried to find out all I could (not easy--no DoA forum then and I didn't know about the Yahoo group).

First bjd, 2004, CP Delf Elf El through Liria, CP's English-speaking agent. Second: CP Delf Elf Lishe (2004/5), through Liria/CP (although Luts had started up by then). CP did not offer faceups for the Elf Lishe (they fired their faceup person after some unsatisfactory faceups for Elf El... which I mostly still have on my Elf El--although I modified the eyebrows a very little). I still own both (see hoarding issue)

I'm not even doing a lot of the involved stuff, but I'm still on every day for at least several hours... I don't really get to check DoA out for fun much (which is a bit good because it keeps me from looking through the Marketplace for things).

I can see why there is a bit of a turnover in some Mods... it's a big commitment!

I'm unhealthy... so I don't like drinking water much. (I need tea, or an Arnold Palmer!)

I don't think I've ever had a sock dress... First--liked the boy bjds... For my girls, the thing was lolita... not really a style for my elves, but I had slightly lolita styles in the early days... was trying for more fantasy/elf stuff, which wasn't easy to find.

Sock dresses were definitely a thing! I think crazy socks were a thing at the time, so they were everywhere, and owners figured it was better using those creatively rather than just have a naked dolly sitting around. They were also a bit controversial, since other people would get sick of seeing dolls in sock dresses! --To combat that, the idea of sock dresses and bjds became a thing that was made more amusing and creative instead of just knocking the idea.

    15. Hello mods! :)

Do you have any specific book and/or movie recommendations?

    16. @JayEll >_> I love so many books and movies! I like a lot of action/adventure/scifi things, so it might not be to everyone's tastes. :sweat I really liked the American Gods book (haven't watched the series though), and for just random movies that I always think back on fondly would be StarGate, Equilibrium, the 1978 Dawn of the Dead (tho the 2004 remake is pretty OK too), and The Fifth Element. :dance

    17. Hello! ^w^ / *waves*

I don't read many books, but as for movie recommendations, one of my favorite movies is Wolf Children. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love it ~

    18. What made you decide to apply as a mod here and is it different than what you thought it would be?
Also what task is next in line for your doll to-do list?

    19. The biggest positive change is the large variety of dolls available now compared to when I started. The biggest negative change is, unfortunately, recasting.

I have an orange kitty named Shishi.

Lately I'm not good at that, as I just got back from a work retreat.

My favourite snack lately is dry cornflakes. That doesn't sound very exciting now that I write that out!

No, because I prefer tiny BJDs, but those didn't exist when I first started. I don't have a very cohesive collection.

I collected dolls before BJDs became popular, and immediately fell in love. The first new release I remember was Volks Hiroshima Chris, and I thought he was beautiful, though expensive. My first BJD was a Happydoll Ein, which I still have.

It takes more time than one would expect. For me a lot of it is keeping up with software updates, advertising, and other behind-the-scenes stuff.

I like tap water that's very cold and slightly metallic. I'm convinced that bathroom sinks usually have better water than kitchen sinks.

Ohhhhh no, I don't think there's photographic evidence of that! :sweat (And if there is, I'd delete it...)

I liked Swerve: How the World Became Modern, which is a history of Lucretius' On the Nature of Things.

I just realized I haven't watched any films since Black Panther came out in February, so no recommendations there, sorry!

I became a mod at a time when people were asked directly if they wanted to be one. It was different from what I expected, though it's hard to pinpoint how. There's a lot of discussion behind the scenes, though it's probably less dramatic or interesting than you'd think.

    20. To all the mods: While I'm certain you have to deal with a lot of negativity and have to be tough to be a mod, what are some things you've seen forum members do that made your job easier, or made you really happy to see? It can be something that regularly happens, or one particular incident. <3 Also, thank you for all you do to keep this forum free to use and safe for us!

    21. @mimimontoya I wanted to apply to be a mod because DoA helped me learn a lot when I first got into the hobby, and I wanted to give back to the community. :)
And I have so many things to do for my collection. x___x I think the first thing I ought to do is finish sealing up some of my off-topic figures that I'm painting, so I can move on to other things. :XD:

@CloakedSchemer In my opinion, it really helps when people report threads or posts with dead photos. :) One of the things we do is keep things tidy, and missing photos doesn't help anyone out, and can sometimes turn people off too, and I don't go looking for every type of thing, so I don't see a lot of dead photos just by happening upon them. :)
And, I am always really happy to see people being welcoming and offering help in Newbieland threads. :) It can be really daunting for new hobbyists to jump in to DoA, so I really love seeing people reach out to offer help and suggestions, and share links to other helpful threads.

    22. The Captive Prince (name of first book in a trilogy), by CS Pacat, if you like m/m alt. universe/fantasy and slave fic (ugh... it's an acquired taste!). I've read it several times and just listened to it on audiobooks... like the books slightly better, but the audios are good enough.

      and
(...very slightly related because Pacat is a fan of Dunnett...)

The Lymond Chronicles (First book of 6: The Game of Kings), by Dorothy Dunnett. Tremendously dense and difficult historical series set around time of Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth, but they only feature slightly (takes place all around Europe and a bit beyond). Best historical fiction ever, and features a misunderstood bad boy to beat all others (it's like, very literary hurt/comfort!). Anyone who has read and enjoyed this series instantly gets kudos as a Reader with a capital R from me!

I've been horrible about going to movies this year, so I can't recommend any, although there are a ton I need to see!

Well... I was floating around on DoA a LOT (12 years), but not really doing anything but emptying my bank account and posting an obscene amount of very vapid posts... (9,000... that's a lot of aimless posting!)... I half-heartedly tried a few years before but was thinking that I already spent too much time on DoA. But I still was spending time when I saw the second announcement asking for people who wanted to try out to be a Mod. And I really did want to do something a bit more constructive if I was going to be spending so much time here... I didn't think I'd be picked, and it was NOT easy going through the mod training (there's a LOT to learn... all those rules and what to do about all those rules, plus regular maintenance, and contributing to decisions... I could barely remember the rules as a member! much less all the rest.) It's like having a second job in many ways! --I thought it would be easier for some silly reason! (SO wrong!) :o

Doll to do list... Need to take some photos (haven't in ages... need a new camera!). Need to do some blushing. Need to sort through and organize a bunch of doll stuff. I seriously am hoarding at this point!

I'm still a relative newbie (just hit 2 years and was in the lastest class of newbie Mods), so I'm still somewhat naive about the whole Mod experience. I seriously knew very little about what went on behind the scenes at DoA. I also tend to keep away from drama, and never had any problems on DoA as a member (or not any drama-related problems)... so I don't have any good Mod stories. But bjds have been a big part of my life over these many years, and I've loved DoA and the people on it so much!!! It does make me think people are basically good (mostly) and tremendously creative and talented. :kitty2

    23. @flowergirl
One big change that comes to mind for me is how the fashions BJDs are commonly wearing have evolved a lot with the trends.

I have a very sweet orange tabby cat.

      @MacaronTea
I try to check the forum in the morning before work and then again in the evening before bed. I only work part time so there's still plenty of time for moderation duties.

My favorite snack is basically anything sweet. I have a terrible sweet tooth and I'm trying to overcome that (but doing a terrible job)!

      @vicemage
I'm not at all where I thought I'd be. I have way more dolls and take way fewer nicely thought out photos than I expected I would.

      @sovayne
What got me into the hobby was simply being at a really low point in my life where I was feeling sad and alone. I wanted to do something nice for myself and got my first BJD on a complete whim. My first BJD was a tan Angel of Dream Ruo Feng.

      @Lawrichai
I feel like I spend less time on moderation duties than I should to be honest. I always want to contribute more but I don't always have the energy or focus with my mental health problems.

      @Elysion gear
Lol, I drink a lot of tap water. I like it when it doesn't have much of a flavor!

      @GreenTeaSlug
I've actually never made a sock dress!

      @JayEll
The last book I read (and really loved) was called "Super Sad True Love Story" by Gary Shteyngart.

      @mimimontoya
I decided to apply as a mod because I wanted to give back to a community which had been such an important part of my life.

Honestly, I'm trying to work on downsizing right now, so I have a lot of thinking to do about which dolls will stay and which will go. It's so hard to decide!

@CloakedSchemer It's really nice when users report broken images or threads in the wrong subcategory. I also think it's wonderful when users can jump in with helpful suggestions like directing the OP to similar thread topics with previous answers.

      • x 3
      • The short story is that I applied because someone told me they thought I'd make a great moderator.
The more fleshed out version is that it was someone on another site who really didn't even know me, but the idea of possibly being a moderator kind of stuck with me. About a month later, I saw the notice here that they were looking for new moderators and I applied. Of course, I also wanted to help out and contribute to the site and the community but in all honesty I think at the time I was genuinely more curious about learning what moderators really do. I knew I was in this hobby for the long run, so I thought if there's anyplace I should be a moderator, it should be on DoA. I didn't think I would pass either, but when I was contacted again for a second round of questions I got so excited. I filled out the second round of questions as soon as I could! Waaay too excited! And scared, but mostly excited! >w< I remember it so well ~
The mod work is different, but at the same time I knew it wouldn't be as I thought it would be, so I tried to not imagine what it would be like and just go with what happened, if that makes sense? I was prepared that it would be a lot of new stuff to learn and a big time commitment, but I've always been very excited to learn new things so it was a challenge I was looking forward to :)

      • I have a pukifee / tiny delf centaur hybrid where the pony butt has yellowed unevenly and it looks kind of awful. My next project is to redo her face-up and give her centaur body a body blush ^w^

      • I love seeing when members help out each other. And as for helping out with our work, it's great when members report broken images, like Airimir said, it really helps us keep the place tidy :)

    24. Happy, happy 14th anniversary to all the old and new mods! I have one question for anyone who wants to answer it: What would you like to see happen in the future for this hobby?

    25. I've collected dolls since I was a kid. Started with Madame Alexander dolls. I saw a BJD on ebay back in 2007, and I've been hooked ever since. (It was a Soom Gena)

My first BJD was a DIM Odelia

It all depends on what is going on in my personal life. But it's usually quite a lot of time.

:P The tap water at my house is kinda gross. I drink bottled water.

Lol. I made a sock dress once. But I don't have it anymore. It's a pity.

I haven't read any new books lately. I am re-reading the His Dark Materials series, tho.

I applied as a moderator because I had a lot of time on my hands. I really needed a distraction.
My next task will be to get some repainted.

People letting us know of any issues they see on the forum is a great help. We can't be everywhere, so it really makes it easier when people let us know when they see an issue.

Whoo...That's a tough one. More colors! More centaurs!

    26. To anyone who wants to answer: what’s your favourite shade of resin? Personally mine is that custom indigo I had made, but I’m curious about what everyone likes.

    27. @Anante I'm hoping to see more mechanically intricate things someday! :D Companies like Doll Chateau have added extra joints on some of their releases' limbs, and PashaPasha and Bimong have developed a newer style shoulder joint that hasn't been used before.

@Chameleon I looove really vibrant, saturated bright colors. The closest I have is my Soom Tridy, who is primary red, and my Tamikan Space Tardigrade, who is a primary blue color. I'd love to get more one day, but my OCs don't really call for it. :sweat

      • x 2
    28. Oh, I love that red! I deliberately am shelling celestial beings in one of my worlds as an excuse to get more fantasy colours :sweat

      • x 1
      • That recasting stops, but I don't have very high hopes that it will happen. Sad.
As for a more fun thing I'd love to see more different resin color options...and centaurs. All the centaurs!

      • I like peach and light pink tones. I know those are the most common ones...but I actually like those colors. And brown, nice shades of brown ooooohhh :D
That said, I generally like pastel colors, so that's something I'd like to see more of. If I had a pastel rainbow army of little cute jumping spider BJDs I'd be so happy! That's a dream come true! ~ I'd paint them in different galaxy sparkly themes ~

      • x 2
    29. Pastel jumping spiders sounds adorable! though there's a lot to be said for those peach and pink tones for sure! they're versatile. and browns can be so pretty! (Also, have you seen Nyxy's Silk? she's a little spider anthro that I'm watching the sculptor create on tumblr, and I thought of her the minute you mentioned spiders!

      • Cake Cake x 1
    30. @Chameleon Yeah I saw it, it's very cute but I prefer full on spiders, no anthro ones >w< There's also those doll chateau ones, those are pretty cool too ~

    31. Elizabeth is definitely on my list of dolls I want to eventually bring home!

    32. Yes, all the spiders! Ahem..now to stay on topic. xD

To all mods are there any doll clothing styles, doll aesthetic styles or just doll types that you wish would come back, or never existed at all, or very little that you'd like to see?

    33. Hmm... new tech to make resin more stable? New jointing innovations? More amazing sculpts? (And ebay and amazon and web-hosts enforcing their supposedly anti-counterfeiting rules.)

I love all kinds of different resin colors! I've got blues and violet and yellow and red and grey and pink. I'd love to see MORE. (I'm bad at picking favorites--I just really like them all.)
Here's one-- Mushroom Peddler Blue Willow--
      [IMG]

I'm trying not to buy more dolls, and I already own dolls of most styles... so... very little that I'd like to see! But I'm sure many tempting dolls and styles will continue to be made and sometimes revived!

    34. I just got back from a work trip, I have a lot of catching up to do~

@flowergirl The number of makers and the diversity of interpretation what a resin BJD is has changed the most. If you could go back and present the current diversity to BJD enthusiasts from 2000-2005, their minds would be blown.

Until recently I had a wonderful long haired tuxedo cat named Sergei. He was 15yrs old very sick, we had to put him to sleep at the end of June. I miss him.

@MacaronTea I have a basic routine of checking in, throughout the day. Check in the morning, check throughout the day, check in when i get home and then tackle any issues I've found throughout the day.

Fav snacks? I like simple potato chips though I don't let myself eat them all that much. I also love blueberries. (Just remember that next time I see you, blueberries)

@vicemage Uh, sort of? I have more dolls than intended, but yeah. I am pretty disciplined.

@sovayne I have always been into dolls and action figures. I was collecting and painting Volks abs/vinyl 1/6th Dollfie in the late 90s when I came across ads for these new resin Super Dollfies they were making. That was around 2000. I hovered around the hobby for a few years before buying into it. in 2005 I bought my first doll, Dollshe SA Bermann, the Valentino release from Anu. A week later I bought a Volks SD13 body in a split and a Delf El head directly from Luts, making my second doll my first hybrid. My third doll was a Kyante (later they became Musedoll) ReChe head that I put on one of the earliest Iplehouse boy bodies.

@Lawrichai I think I'm the oldest continuously active staffer here, since 2006, so over 12 years. It's so routine, I don't know how I'd add up my hours. I've put in a lot, enough that I'd say that I haven't ever had enough time to really do everything I want to with my own dolls. I don't think people understand just how much freely given time has been dedicated to working behind the scenes by so many staffers over all the years. Thanks for the shout out~

@Elysion gear Pork, followed closely by Murky Arsenic Laden Pond.

@GreenTeaSlug It used to be more of a thing, where some doll owners got judgemental towards new members who grabbed a first doll fast, scribbled a face on them, threw a sock on the doll and called 'em done. Years ago, we took ownership of this idea and held our first Sock Dress Couture contest. It was very popular and the contestants made some gorgeous things just using socks as their materials. Just goes to show you, ain't nothing wrong with a sock dress.

@JayEll Tons, always. What sort of thing you like? Genres? I have way to much to just list it. I am also really into music.

@mimimontoya When I joined the staff, you didn't apply. When the team at that time decided they needed more help, they saw that I was always trying to help other members, and thought I'd be a good fit. They asked me to join.

Doll to-dos: I need to get faceups for my SIO2 Taolu, and my Rumpel Morfeo. I need to do an ear mod on Taolu before I can send him off, I want him to have gauged lobes.

@CloakedSchemer I'd say: Don't get mad at the mods for doing basic forum tasks, it's their job. I'll putter about every day, I merge consecutive posts, I move threads to the proper forums, I remove posts from News that aren't strict Q&A with the OP, I graveyard finished sales threads that haven't been properly marked, etc etc. I'm just bopping around doing my job. cleancleanclean.

Sometimes out of nowhere I get blindsided by someone who thinks I am doing something to pick on them, or to spite them, or because I'm horrible and mean and oppressing them. And I'm like, ooooookaaaay, I'm doing the same thing I do every day everywhere and hundreds of others have never noticed or been bothered. I don't understand what makes one person suddenly lose it. Forum cleaning is basic, routine, uniform and necessary. It's not personal.

As far as negativity pointed at us, man, people can be brutal. It rather rolls off me, as I truly believe it says way more about them that it does about me, They don't even know me.

@Anante Yeah, for recasts to die off would be amazing. I've always been in this as a way to directly support an art form I love.
Barring that, I just want the art to keep evolving. I want even more diversity in any way that can happen.

@Chameleon I'm boring on this. I like human skin colors.

@Cloudedmind That's a pretty broad question! The only thing I wish I'd see more of is clothing for large size modern urban girls. Everything is usually too girly, too fantasy, too sexy or a parody of a street fashion genre. I have a girl that needs realistic edgy urban clothing that has a punk spirit without being a punk parody. I'd like to see edgy runway style filter down to dolls.

    35. 'The Broken Commandment' or 'The Road' (both books)

I expected it to be both different and the same? I assumed that most mods did more or less the same things just based off availability and that individual mods would tend to focus on one area or another, but I didn't expect to end up devoting most of my mod energy in the areas I typically work in.
Next in line? Getting rid of a bunch because I have too many and it annoys me.

When members reply to threads in Newbieland with sincere attempts at helping newbies without being rude to them or assuming they should know this information already.

For me it depends on the doll/item. White, normal, tan, dark browns, fantasy colors - as long as it suits the sculpt and what I want for it, I like it.

      • x 3
    36. @eleniel, 'The Road' is great but brutal. The movie version was nicely done, but it's hard to go wrong with Viggo.

I always want to remind people that we created Newbieland as a place where new members can do no wrong.

Other than being pro-recast, there is no way to use that forum incorrectly. If a Newbie asks a question, always be kind. If a Newbie asks a question, hand them the answer. I know it's nice to teach new members how to find their own answers, but in that forum, us oldies are only here to give, not necessarily to educate on the use of the search function. That comes later.

Welcome to any Newbies reading this! Please take this to heart. Use Newbieland as much as you want until you "age out" of it. You can't do Newbieland wrong.

    37. Do you like hugs?

      • x 1
    38. @Anante Well, definitely wishful thinking but I'd like to see recasts stop being a problem more than anything. More realistically I'd also like to see more dolls of various interesting colors and more innovative joint mechanisms become more common. Also (though it's not really for me) more imaginitive dolls like fantasy creatures, interesting anthros and androids and stuff.

@Chameleon I have mostly normal skin dolls but I'm feeling pretty bored with that and the last two dolls I bought are an EOS doll Tom in tan and a Gem of Doll Kira in green, both of which are beautiful. I love the green! I've also always been a fan of the dark tan/ ebony colors.

@Cloudedmind as for doll fashion I'm really into gothic, punk, cyber goth, raver, and general throwback 90's styles. I wish those things were easier to buy things for but it's okay because I can mostly just make the stuff I want. I'm really sick of the kind of pastel goth and instagram face styles and ready for something new to be popular for dolls.

@mincy I like hugs from people I know quite a lot, from strangers not as much.

      • x 2
    39.

    40. @Cloudedmind It actually already kind of happened a little - I was very sad when Custom House (and later, with the Aidolls name) basically went under. I don't know what happened exactly, only that they slowly closed up shop - one day their English site was gone, and then their Chinese site was gone, and then later, even their Korean site was gone.
And then surprise!! Luts suddenly announced that they had purchased the rights/prototypes to a lot of the CH sculpts. :) I have Little Junior Jupiter and Icarus, and two Ange Ai Uris. They were incredibly prolific back in like... I want to say 2008-2010 or 11? And I always thought they were a great company, and even when they had their terrible business practices, their sculpts were always adorable. :)
So, I guess I'd like to see more of that. There are defunct companies that released really famous head sculpts, and there's no way to get many of them anymore.

@mincy I really like hugs. :sweat I will overdo it sometimes and hug complete strangers -- but luckily I pretty much always catch myself and ask 'are you OK with hugs?' before I go in for the kill. :XD:

      • x 1
    41. Down at the bottom of the home page, there's a list of everyone who's online, and I've always wanted to know what qualifies someone as a "robot spy". I NEED TO KNOW, GUYS! :?

    42. @mincy I am not a touchy feelie person. I hug people I'm close to, and I don't avoid random hugs, but I am not really a general purpose hugger.

@HeyJude, it's actually random internet bots that we've relabeled to read as "robot spys". That's my story and I'm sticking to it. >__>

    43. I don't mind, but I'm not the huggiest person around. :ablink:

      That's above my pay grade!

    44. Now that it's the weekend, I can answer some of these!

The massive increase in number of companies/artisans making dolls, and on the flip side of that the massive increase in recasting. Honestly, there are times it makes me want to quit the hobby altogether out of frustration.

Spouse and I have two very spoiled Siamese cats, both age 16. We lost the third kitty member of our household in March and are collectively still grieving. His littermate cries for him every day, trying to find him.

Fortunately, my job is such that I can check in during work. I can't always devote a lot of time, but I can work on some maintenance and review outstanding issues then.

Gummi cola bottles. They're nothing but sugar and I love them.

Oh heavens no! I resisted getting started for quite a while, and I was only going to have one doll. Then only Minifees, nothing bigger (because bigger dolls sort of creeped me out). Then I was never going to have a Volks.

Protip: never use the word 'never' about doll collecting. Your chances for failure are very high.

Pushy friends, lol! :D Actually, I bought my first doll to get an event head as a gift for my friend who had been into dolls about a year or more already. I thought if I absolutely hated it or was terrified of it, I could always sell it.

Minifee Shushu (from Luts, before Fairyland branched off on their own). My precious gateway drug and still one of my favorites. I sold her original body to get an A-line but she's here and will never leave me.

It can be quite a bit, there's so much that transpires behind the scenes. There's more time spent on things during events such as the Anniversary, for example. And sometimes when I get going on a particular area checking for broken images or things out of place, time just flies by and I've been at it a couple hours before I know it.

While we do some of the caretaking, the community first and foremost exists because of our members and their desire to interact and learn more from each other.

I'll go with basic unflavored, please! :D

I want to say the heyday of the sock dress 'trend' came before I got my first doll (Jan 2008) but there were still quite a few around. Socks are a material most everyone can easily find and patterns on them aren't too out of scale for dolls, so it's a valuable resource.

I have actually never made a sock dress, largely because I cannot sew, but perhaps I will present as part of the Sock Extravaganza a special What Not To Wear section. This will likely involve me taping socks onto one of my dolls because, as I said, I cannot sew.:wiggle:cool:

Bread. Does it have bread in it? Under it? Near it? Then it is my favorite snack.

      N. K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy was the best thing I've read in the last year. Also, she is a wonderful human being.

    46. In general: No. I don't like being touched much at all.
However, specific people can get away with it, and there are moments I like hugs or I get super cuddly, but those moments are rare and I have to be super comfortable for it to happen.

Some things are better left unknown. It's safer that way.

    51. how do they celebrate their bjd's birthday?

    52. I have to admit I am terrible at birthdays: mine, other people's, dolls'... :doh

I can remember my nephew's because my sister mentions it and because I try harder to remember when it's important, and birthdays are bigger for kids... But my dolls: sorry/not. Besides, there are nearly a hundred of them and we'd be celebrating just about every other day! :o

Additionally... I could never decide WHICH date to use for a birthday--order, arrival, random...! I guess arrival is probably closest... but that seems weird since sometimes I can't get to the Post Office to pick up right away or don't have time to open the box right away... so I sort of ignore birthdays... :frownyblush:
