decreasing patterns?

Aug 30, 2005

    1. hello,

im pretty new still to sewing. i can make and modify patterns easily. i know how to work a sewing machine - but i learned this all from a class. but what i didnt really learn is the best way to shrink and enlarge patterns?

its driving me nuts! i always shrink them wrong and the measurements end up bad. is there something im missing? or is there a site that might help me with shrinking and enlarging patterns? i have alot of human sized patterns that will make great doll clothes, but im tired of screwing up

(ps i would search this but the search isnt working for me? sorry!)

    2. Scan in the portion of the instructions that have the pattern peices. Measure the length of one of the peices, measure the same distance on your doll(say, measure the length of a pant leg and your doll's leg), then divide what you WANT by what you HAVE.

Say your pattern leg is 5 inches and your doll's leg is 10 inches. Divide 10 by 5. The answer is the percent that you need to multiply by. :3

    3. so...if i want to shrink them...i multiply?

    4. Er, not on the pattern pieces themselves. There should be instructions that come with the pattern pieces, where they outline what the different pieces are and what they go to. You scan that page, and enlarge from there. If the scanned piece is 5 inches long and it needs to be 10 inches long, enlarge it 200%. Worse comes to worse, you can always work with trial and error, so long as the printer has ink. *cackles* Oh I'm going to have fun with this technique...

    5. Try this site...

      http://www.dalerae.com/Enlargepattern.htm

It was written for Barbie clothes, but there's no reason that it shouldn't work for BJDs either.

Part of your current problem may be because even though BJDs may be more 'like people' then most dolls they don't exactly follow a scaled down human's shape exactly. So you may actually be scaling down the patterns right, but they won't fit because the BJD does not follow the laws of physics and it's body shape is not the same. To do this properly, you may have to start creating your own patterns or learn how to tailor really well.

    6. Those piece outlines are all to scale? I had no idea. ...This is awesome *_*
