Hey! I've been throwing some ideas around in my head for my first creation, while waiting for my account here to process and get all put together. I'm not quite sure where to start! I'm planning on drawing out concept sketches, and maybe some turnarounds for a few of the ideas I've come up with in the last couple days. As of right now, i only have them in my head, but I'm posting this to get a list going and maybe ill get some feedback and opinions! Here's what I've been thinking so far: Small Spider-taur BJD --This would probably end up being around 6" high completed and standing, with an upper body a lot like a Luts Honey Delf kind of doll (i dont know a huge range of doll models yet!) the spider legs would be on the short and thick side, to give the doll a cuter look, and maybe help with how sturdy the pieces will be. Praying Mantis --Exactly what it sounds like, but in a cuter, baby-like sculpted style with thick limbs and soft features. I would also be able to make wings to add onto this one, maybe! 6" in height as well! Small Centaur --Same as the spider-taur and mantis with the size and design. I'm hoping to stay on the small side for this first one. Since i don't know much about horse anatomy and find hyper-realistic horse sculptures a little strange looking, it'll be very smooth and cartoonish. ^^^i actually also had an idea to make a piñata themed centaur, which i think would be pretty cute too! Various Original Characters --I have a few vampires, some fairies, and troll-like horned creatures that i could sculpt, too. These could end up with animalistic features like digi legs and horns and long ears, or they could end up looking like a regular human doll. Who knows, something simpler like a human body might be the best thing for me to do for my first doll! This is why i'm looking for some advice. Although if i do make a doll of one of my characters, i would probably never cast it, or cast it more than once in resin... I've been browsing the forum here all day and there are so many beautiful and unique and inspiring sculptures you all have been creating, theyre really giving me the urge to start my own as soon as i can! Hopefully within the next few days ill be back here to post some sketches and things in this thread. Until then, thank you for reading this, and for any thoughts and opinions you have to offer! -Wonky :uhhuh
A praying mantis ! :kissy I love this idea, I want to see it done xD The spider-taur is nice and original too I think you can start with any of your projects, as long as it motivates you. You can begin with single joints for example. Also more legs = more work (and I find horse legs harder to engineer), but also = more easily stable ^^ What king of clay are you planning on using ?
Praying mantis doll would be AWESOME! I really like the idea of spider-taur too. And I think in some ways spider legs would be easier to make than horse legs, less muscles and anatomy to worry about? :'D I think all your ideas seem great, whichever you choose, I will definitely want to see the process. :3
Thank you! A lot of my friends have liked the praying mantis, too! Horses are something else dlkfgjh once im more comfortable with sculpting ill try more complicated anatomy! I'm planning on using mostly paperclay, and maybe sculpey clays of different densities. we'll see what works and what i can afford at the time!
After making a few test sculptures (ive been making a few faces, and i made a little fairy) i think ive found myself with a preference for clay figures and more armature-type dolls, than making ball jointed ones. I'll be switching my status on here from artist to observer (im not sure if thats the exact term used) but ill be moving over to another forum more centered o those kinds of dolls when i find one. ill still be under this username, i use it for everything, and ill reply here and put it on my profile when i do find a good forum! (in the meantime im also over at wonkykrystol on tumblr, and port-wine on deviantart!) i really would have liked to do these, but i just know theyre projects i would have started and then never finished because of how difficult the joints would be for me.
