Esthetics Decals for tattoos?

May 16, 2021

    1. Hi!
I acquired a doll chateau noah with the goal of making a fantasy constellations/star-themed centaur, except my hand can't really do what I want it to do. So instead I thought I could maybe use something like a waterslide decal or temporary tattoos instead, but I'm not sure how it affects resin/msc and if it'll be easy to remove should I want to do something else in the future.

Does anyone have experience with that kind of stuff? I've got some tamiya mark fit strong on hand so that's what I was thinking of using, but I'm leery of putting it on resin for potentially temporary reasons when generally decals for miniatures are meant to stay on there.

      Thank you!

    2. I put temporary tattoos all over one of my SD. Just spray with MSC beforehand so it's not directly on the resin, then spray again after to seal it. You need to wait for each layer to dry fully before proceeding as well. I was able to do all of these on the same day and have successfully removed this kind of tattoo with no leftover marks.

My advice is to get extras of the most important ones! One of the big ones I put on the wrong spot at first and it drove me crazy so I had to buy another to try again.

    3. Isn't Mark Fit Strong a solvent? I'd be really nervous about using it on resin. :sweat I agree with @Cap'n - MSC is the way to go.

    4. OH that looks so good!!!! So it's just regular human-use temporary tattoos? That would definitely make my life so much easier especially now that there's ways to do custom temp tattoos!

Ahh is it? xD;;; but also that makes sense because of how you use it. I'll go with MSC for now!

Thank you so much to both of you <333333

    5. Yep! The hardest part was finding some in the right scale. I just ordered a bunch of different ones and used what I could from those. The ones with multiple smaller ones on a sheet tend to be the best fit for dolls. I've heard of those custom temp tattoo things but I'm not sure of any off the top of my head. Etsy might be a good place to check. Perhaps find some free-use clip art if you're not able to draw what you want, or commission someone else to draw it for you if you go that route.

      Good luck!

    6. Ooh yeah, I imagine scale would be difficult unless it's meant to be delicate-looking on people. Luckily digital work is much easier when it comes to geometric designs so I'm gonna try and get some custom-made!! I'll post photos once I get to it!

    7. I have used printable fake tattoos on dolls to get images I want in the right scale. However the printable tattoo paper is never cheap, and hard to find at craft stores sometimes.

    8. I used metallic water transfer nail decals on one of my dolls and it honestly worked amazing. I personally used a little dab of Liquitex gloss varnish (since these were shiny and metallic so I didn't want to dull them) only over the area of the decal and that has worked just fine.

    9. The custom temporary tattoos are extremely nice too. I ordered a specific design in multiple quantity in case of a mess up and kept them. They came out beautifully when applied (MSC was sprayed beforehand).
Depending on where you go and what you want, I gave them the measurements of the area I was going to apply so it was around that size. I plan to order more once I can.
It also saves on having to hunt for a faceup artist who does tattoos all the time, unless I need a specific one that can't be printed.

    10. oh wow thank you for all the additional replies!! i really like the metallic water transfer decals idea, that's what i was thinking of doing (or at least the waterslide decal place i've been looking at for other stuff offers metallic print options as well) except i wasn't sure about the decal setting fluid. but msc+liquitex seems to work okay for you guys so i'm sure it'll work for me!!

    11. If you have a Cricut, I bet you can make and design any tattoo you want. And they’ve super easy to remove. But the vinyl won’t be as flat as a temp tattooo. They’ll still look great for photos though.

    12. they're here!!! or well, a test batch is here. i ordered waterslide decals in gold (it's not really like a foil gold, but more like craft paint gold which is good because i can use my leftover gold acrylic without having to worry about matching things) and i wasn't sure how intricate i could make it without losing detail but it's surprisingly okay!! the lacy motif here is less than 2" in diameter

i'm not sure when i'll get to try and test them out, but once i do i'll definitely update the thread!

    13. @captain. Oh I'm really curious to see how the gold is going to look! The design looks really neat, but what's the difference between 'waterslide decals' and temporary transfer tattoos?

@Tippetarius you can print your own temporary tattoos? That's wild, do you just buy the specific paper for it? And do you know if it has to be ink or laser printer? It sounds really interesting, and would leave a lot less room for error when checking the size, instead of ordering custom ones online. I wonder if these come off the doll again as easily as 'professionally' manufactored ones do.

I'm sorry for all the questions, this post just made me very curious

    14. i'm not sure about temporary transfer tattoos but waterslide decals are what people use in model making! you stick the decal in water which lets you remove the backing paper and apply the decal itself proper. so the difference is probably the chemical stuff that comes with the different intent and surface of applications (skin vs plastic)! i think with decals you can also have some transparency since i had to specify a white backing layer for my opaque decals.

decals might also be easier to come by locally!

    15. Ah thank you very much! Oh so it's probably something like that which is used for the faces on toys that are more massproduced, I assume? That's cool to know, thank you!

    16. Super late to the thread but did anyone tried nail art stickers/stencils for doll tattoos? I have tried temporary human tattoos before and they work super well (over a sealant layer)
I'd love to add a little older moon in my girl's forehead, (yea, a bit Sailor Moon style) in gold I don't have the pulse to do it by hand

    17. hey! i think stickers would work out fine, what i settled on in the end was heat transfer vinyl because i wanted the chrome-y shininess and also it comes in a few colours. the downside is it's expensive when you only need like 1/1000th of the total amount sold in a package xD;;;
i think the recommendation was to stick it with something safe and maybe go over it with something like gloss acrylic medium for sealing?

    18. I have some gold heat transfer roll! I can give it a go. Thank you for the tip! :XD:

    19. HECK yeah good luck!!! i hope it works out!!

    20. I gave it a go with gold foil and my Cricut machine. Moon and stars are about 4 mm long.
It feels a bit thick, but it can be super fun for a foto session. Totally thumbs up! Thanks again for the suggestion:XD:

    21. OH THAT'S SO GOOD!!!!!!!!! i'm so glad it's worked out, though a shame that it feels a bit thick. my next suggestion is waterslide decals but that doesn't have the chrome look to it unfortunately (but it can be great for other tattoos!

also congrats on your beautiful looking lusis because that's also the face i got for this hybrid i wanted tats for xD
