De-zombification Serum: Resin Color Restoration

    1. Oh that's been another disappointment. After paying shipping fee, handling fee, postage fee, and gawd knows how many fees, Jo-Ann's charged my credit card for the full amount of the order, and a few days later send me a shipping notification that is missing 4 of the items I purchased and paid for, including 2 of the dyes :(
I don't know how they are going to fix this, but all they said was for me to wait 3 weeks and then the items would be back in stock for me to go buy them again, and pay all the shipping, handling, postage and privilege fees. Who knows. But once again I won't have the dye.
I am just going to go back to Michael's next week and see if I find the other 2. I think Jo-Ann's shipped the Scarlet only.

    2. Do you have any ideas for getting a doll really white. I mean it was white to begin with but has yellowed a little but I would love to get a beautiful even white all over.

    3. Assuming one were to MSC their doll after a dye bath, would one have to worry about the doll staining its clothes?

    4. Well, that about sucks. :( I hope that you can find the colors you need.

I think that you might want to look at the whitening threads. They would have a better chance of having the information you need. Good luck! ;)

That's actually a great question. "Do you have to MSC a doll after its been dyed in order to prevent the dye from staining the clothes?" Anyone? Anyone?

    5. Just in time for me to find this thread ^^ I got my 7 yr old DOC a new double jointed body but he is REALLY yellow compared to it. I was going to just blush his head, but I may end up trying the dye since the color is so different. I'd hate to have toreblush his whole head every time I wanted to change his face up. That being said, has anyone had any trouble with the dye fading/coming off with the brush cleaner stuff used to take off MSC, pastels, etc on face ups? Sorry if that has been asked before >.<

    6. You know, I might actually try this on my "new" Volks body I got. I've been told it's a pretty old one (old-skin, probably pre-2005) and it doesn't match the head it was intended for 100%. Might go for blushing, first, cos I don't know where to get Rit dye here in Germany ...

    7. I'll definitely have to give this a try. I have a horribly yellowed hybrid doll, a Luts Ani on a DZ MSD body. I think the head used to be normal and the body used to be white... but both have yellowed out to nearly the same shade. I'll post pics once I've refreshed her!

    8. Wow! I will definitely have to do this to my girl! She's soooo white and needs color! Thanks!

    9. Can any of you that have tried this give us an update on how it lasts? Does it fade or rub off? Does the color change? What are the long term results?

    10. [IMG]

I tried dying my white RS Mei yesterday. I made sure to buy a stainless steel pot, not aluminum, and used RIT Tan and Petal Pink but she came out gray and nowhere near the color I was looking for. I keep trying to figure out where I went wrong and I can't figure it out. I was able to use a magic eraser and some elbow grease and scrub her off back to the white.

    11. You have to make sure the dyes you are using dont make brown [meaning the ratio of the dye]. Did you look at the color before dipping her in the dye bath? Oh and you probably want more pink than tan dye in the mixture. Remember that red + other colors [besides blue since that makes purple] can turn brown [I.E. red and orange etc.] so the ratio of the dye needs to be carefully measured and you probably need more yellow since red + yellow = orange and NS is more peachy/yellow. If the color looks too dark that also means you need to add more water to the dye bath. Also since you are starting from white and not a normal skin tone you may need a different combo of dyes. I would suggest not using the RIT tan perhaps and finding two different dyes to mix with the pink so you get a more normal color since the Tan is more brown. But if you can get the ratio more to your liking then Tan should be fine to use. You probably want only 1 part tan and the other color to be 3-4 parts or so depending on what color you want it to come out. Also remember that the dying time can effect how dark she comes out too. So you want to time it right. I would test dye her leg piece first and see what color it comes out and then dye all her other pieces according to the timing you did [also you might need two dye baths for all her parts because the dye will be used up as you dye more pieces].

    12. I did use more pink than tan, yes. And I only got those two because I had a very very very limited selection in my area. I only dyed all of her because I kind of liked the gray color but in the end I scrubbed her off because I could. I suppose I will just have to order the dyes I need online. Would powder be better than liquid? Is there a difference in effect between the two?

    13. hmm I'm not sure what went wrong then. Other people on the forum might be able to help with this more. I've read that the powder causes mottling and spots [meaning uneven dyeing] so liquid should be the way to go. Those two colors should work okay if the ratio is fiddled with but perhaps adding some kind of yellow would help with the brown tone. I know sanding the doll prior to dying helps make everything more even but you can also get unevenness with sanding too if not everything is sanded smooth and sanded evenly. Let me see if I can track down some other threads on this and perhaps we can find an answer to why it went brown.

[also the age of the dye can sometimes effect color... do the bottles of dye have expiration dates on them? Perhaps they are a little old...though I'm suspecting they arent and this has to do with the combo of the dye color. Maybe a different pink would work better? If you can find one any how. It seems the person who used the tan mixed it with Rose Pink instead of petal pink. Perhaps that's the answer]

EDIT: hmm I just reread a few things on here... maybe try more tan + less pink and see if that changes things? I found a post on the first page where someone dyed a stark white body and yellowed NS head. The head was dyed 4:1 with more rose pink and less tan. And the body was dyed 4:1 with more tan and less rose pink. This resulted in the head and body matching.

    14. Weird. I'll just order the dyes online and fiddle with it soon. Thanks for all your help! :D

    15. You're welcome ^^ I hope you figure it out :D But at least you can have fun experimenting while trying :D

    16. I agree with dyeing a leg part, mixofdays. Its easier to sand out the color that way. :3nodding:

I have to admit that I'm curious as to how your girl will turn out. Be sure to post pics of your progress and info about what colors you used and what ratios too. Looks like you'll have a interesting time with this, that's for sure!

      Ryu

    17. I might look into some whitening threads after trying this dying experiment. The color worked well, I had to play with the ratio a little to get something I liked, but in the end it was still too dark for the body. I ended up brushing quite a few layers of white pastel(yes JUST white!) to get the head light enough to vaguely match. It seems like the DOD resin lost the pink hues and darkened so just adding the pink back in didn't make it match. The head did come out a nice pinky color though! If I had wanted to I could have dyed the body to match it, but I kind of like the paler look. Time to do some more research!

    18. Wow, great thread, wish I'd found this thread before I gave my Nana a face-up and put her back together ;) . Most of the results look fantastic. Mixofdays, is the pic you have posted before or after you sanded off the color? If it's before, the blotchy-ness makes me think your doll maybe had some kind of residue or MSC or even oils from skin? I only say this as I've seen this happen with fabrics, believe it or not, starch or oily stains will pick up the dye differently in the fibers so that's what made me think this is a possibility with your doll. I'm no authority so take it with a grain of salt, just an observation. I'm glad you were able to sand it all back off.

I had been wondering if this would work for yellowed dolls myself, and was thinking about trying a pale violet dye but was too chicken-sh*t to try it. Do you think a violet shade would give good results? Reason being that violet/purple is opposite yellow on the color wheel and is used to correct uneven/yellow skin on human skin. Maybe I'm off it, but wanted to ask :D

    19. The picture was right after she was dyed before I scrubbed her off.

    20. I would really like to see pics of what s/he looks like, both before and after! :3nodding:

    21. Wow, i should try this out but i have to find a fitting body for my luts sd 2012 winter head xD ! Nice work everyone!

    22. i have a pretty yellowed head currently sitting in my hands and was considering getting a new one when Leeke does their winter re-release, but this thread makes me want to try just de-yellowing him. I think I'll give it ago, whenever I can get the stuff I need. So glad my mum works in a hobby store and can get these things for even cheaper than they already are. Hopefully, if it works out I won't have to shell out for a new head, even if the price is totally reasonable. XD You may have just saved my beautiful with this! *crosses fingers*

    23. I ended up finding a beauty green Luts/CP Dark Elf Soo head, and while I'm currently paying on her body through DDE. I'm now seriously considering dyeing her head to match her body.

    24. Thank you for posting this!! It will really come in handy!:)

    25. This is an amazing tutorial--thank you for posting. I would have never dreamed of using RIT to dye a doll but I am definitely going to give this a try.

    26. wow very excited to see this! I have two dolls that are severely yellowed, and right now in pieces in boxes after my lame attempts to revive them. I am going to try this, and post results!

    27. This is amazing. I'd love to try this to get some interesting fantasy colored skin tones like maybe a light lavender or something for an elf I'm looking at. Thanks for sharing! :)

    28. Anyone had issues with this on extreme yellowing/dye not taking to certain parts?

I used to formula to a T and it's fantastic - I dyed my old Kid Delf (I believe she's from around '06). I did notice her forearms and calves (which were also more yellow than the rest of her) were still a bit more yellow than the rest of her but I kept them in the bath longer and it somewhat helped. The head however, was refusing to co-operate. For a while I was timing and periodically checking. I ended up just leaving it in the bath and did something else for a while. Came back and still no change. I gave her head an incredibly light sanding a while before the dye bath - which if anything I thought would mean it would take the dye better than the rest. I wasn't keen to over-sand as I'm conscious of starting to lose her facial features.

Anyone else experienced this? Is it simply because the head was 'too' yellow to be changed? or something to do with the amount of faceups she's had...?

    29. I actually just tried this today and noticed much the same on my kid delf's head. I'm not sure what to do with that, but I'm going to experiment some more and see what I can do.

Also, for lack of any other choices I did end up using the powdered Rit dye. I found that if you stir it first, before putting the doll pieces into it, the color does not come out terribly mottled, but it can still be noticeable. Stirring it helps even out the color of the dye greatly and otherwise it seems to act like liquid dyes.

Now I'm off to do some cleaning up and see if I want to retry dying my girl.

    30. Thank you thank you!! This is super detailed and very helpful! (o:

    31. Would anyone happen to know if using a lightly purple color in the serum would help make a yellowed doll lighter? I know using a purple dye on highlighted hair that's too yellow produces a nice pale result. Would that also work in a similar fashion for dying dolls?

    32. So this serum would make the doll look more pinkish?

      Sent from my Tardis

    33. Wow I've never thought that it can be possible to dye resin. I'm really new to he hobby so I have not idea. Thanks for the post!

    34. A lot of people dye their dolls of another particular colour, but as obvious as it seems now, I never thought of restoring a doll using the same method!!! Super simple and very effective!
Thank you so much for showing us the process! :dance

    35. Love the results! !! This serum work wonder in your doll [emoji5] .

    36. This is awesome! I don't need it right now but as soon as I do I'm going to have to do this.

    37. Hoo boy. I decided I need to do this for my big EID boy, he's pretty yellow and he's getting an updated faceup soon anyway so I might as well. But the stores here don't have scarlet, nor do they have rose pink, so I've got tan and petal pink and we'll see what happens with those I suppose! If I get decent results, I'll try to share the ratio I used, since I've read other people had the same problem finding colors.

    38. Awesome! Thanks for the experimentation. Off to look for any suspiciously lemon looking BJDs.

    39. On the topic of kid delfs -- yes, I had this problem, too. The dye did not catch on his face at ALL. I attributed it to my using magic eraser when I initially got him, but other dolls who received the same treatments did not have an issue being dyed. So approach with caution if you're dying a luts -- the dye might not catch well.

However, this serum has been a life saver for other dolls! Thank you for sharing. :)

    40. im sure you heard it already but WOW, im pretty sure this serum has magic in it or something. I have got to use this on my girl sometime in the future. She is beautiful as is but is quite pale. i think a nice tanning session would do her very nicely. If and or when i get around to it i will post a photo.

    41. Thank you very much for your GREAT advice!!! It`s really an important issue and I believe that it will help to restore our adorable dolls. I`m going to keep your advice in a good place)

    42. :lol:Cool title, really grabbed my attention ... Thank you for this info I have often wondered if anything could be done about mismatching parts, heads and bodies and the like.

    43. Restoration threads have become my new obsession here, and this one touched on something I saw years and years ago on a mego action figure forum. (They soaked a rubber head in a red plastic called plasti-dip to de grey it) Changing the color of a doll back to it's original, intended color! I never, in a million years would have thought about trying something like this on resin though, and you've given me some courage!

You seem to have found the magic formula, good work indeed! It's exactly this sort of stuff that makes me excited to see doll owners ingenuity.

    44. Is there any possibility to use the powder?

    45. I've read this thread a few times in the past when it pops back up to the first page, because it's a wonderful resource and I think it's the most effective method of color restoration I've seen so far. But a few weeks ago I actually sought it out for the first time, and I will be doing it myself soon! I tend not to be terribly bothered by slightly yellowed dolls, but I recently bought an older body for one of my (formerly) floating heads, and while the BODY matches the head, I hadn't realized just how yellow the hands and feet were! (Also the lower arms and legs) So it's off to the craft store to pick up some RIT dye for me! I'll post my results once I get around to doing it!

    46. This is a great thread, i'm wondering has anyone tried doing the technique on Iplehouse resin?

    47. The body I'll be using the serum on is actually an older Iplehouse YID body, but I'm not sure if you meant Iplehouse resin in general or specifically since they discontinued the old bodies and sculpts? I'm not sure if they changed their NS resin since then...

    48. I think the resin recipe changed just over a year ago. However I'm curious even with the older sculpts.

    49. I wonder if this would work with darker toned dolls?

    50. I don't see why not. Of course the dye colors would be different, but the principle is the same. To replace the color/s that have yellowed out.

      Ryu

    51. I was wondering if we could get some more before and after photos from success stories? I'd love to try this on my Rose White skin Iplehouse dude because of how quickly he turned yellow green and it couldn't even sand away, but so far it's just been Normal skin tones. (I would try it but my doll is currently 12.000 miles away from me for the next year)

    52. Amazing! This takes a weight off my mind when I start thinking about how much our dolls cost and they then change colour.... Thank you so much!

    53. I have a couple dolls that are much paler than I had hoped, so I am looking forward to dyeing them in the very near future!

    54. I've been wondering if there is basically an opposite version of this serum. My character has black blood, and so I want to dye him a very unpink shade of grey. I'm okay with ending up with a yellowish, green, or bluiesh result, but I really want to cancel out any "healthy" peachiness that might bizarrely manifest (I have heard a few horror stories of colors turning purple or brown, instead of grey, or accidentally turning them grey instead of intended colors). I know dying is a risky procedure and there are no guarantees, but I'd like to be as prepared as I can be and know what kinds of processes might cancel out or remedy some of the more spectacular anomalies that have happened.

    55. I'm bumping this thread so nobody thinks of archiving it. I may need it later.

    56. You may have trouble dyeing a doll a true grey over peachy skintones, your brst bet is to start with a doll as white as possible.

    57. Never fear. In fact, I've made it a sticky so it stays on the top, since it's a unique thread.

    58. COOLIES, especially since I've been debating on trying this on one of my Crew to see how it works. :kitty1

    59. You are awesome :) But we already knew that :P

    60. Thank you so much ... uncertain about buying a used doll and very zombies ... thanks to this trick, I decided to buy it :)
