Winter break afforded me the chance for a quick trip to Yokohama to see the Daydream exhibit at the Yokohama Doll Museum, or 横浜人形の家. With a (surprisingly) enthusiastic boyfriend in tow, the whole thing was nothing short of magical. This is incredible! Mari Simizu is super talented, and you must have had a blast trying to find the most interesting pieces.
I'm so jealous!!!! I went to Yokohama last year in the spring and I wish this was there But beautiful photos and dolls, I really love the theme and aesthetics of this!!!!
I have Never seen Anything like this! I am in Love!!! Thank you so much for posting. These are amazing!!!
I was SO close to buying St Agnes (the nurse one) but my boyfriend dragged me away from it in the nick of time. Did you go to this museum? This exhibit was temporary, but the permanent one is super interesting and beautiful too! It features dolls from all corners of the globe as well as really good English offerings (relative to other museums I've been to here). It was so dreamy...I want to go back once I move out of Okinawa. I'm so glad you enjoyed them! I'm really thankful for Japan's dedication to promoting the arts and handcrafted goods because there are so many museums like this all over the country. Not a problem, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@ourtangledbones I didn't even know there was a doll museum until I saw this post, but now that I do know I will surely go next time!!
I haven't been yet (maybe for spring break), but there's also a doll museum in Iwatsuki (Saitama), a town famous for making traditional Hina Matsuri dolls for over three hundred years. However, the museum is not just limited to Hina dolls but also features puppets, mechanical dolls and antique dolls from abroad. I can't to visit it as well. And lastly, though unrelated to BJDs, during my day trip to Yokohama, I also went to the antique tin toy museum in Yamate-cho. There are all sorts of old tin toys, from animals, to planes, trains, war tanks and war propaganda toys. Its only 200 yen to get in and SO interesting. Not to mention the gift shop has all sorts of mini tin toys that you can buy for your dolls as props.
Not a problem, I'm glad you love them! Let me know if you ever find yourself in Yokohama! I'd be glad to give you directions/exhibit info!
Ahhhhh, I was in Yokohama last year and even knew about this museum but forgot to go! I'll have to try again next time I'm in Japan
Yokohama is really a fabulous city for arts and culture! Next time you're around, definitely check out the Yamate neighbourhood, where the first foreigners settled (read: were relegated) and built western style manors during the Meiji period. It's kind of amazing to walk through and see Italian, Spanish and Victorian mansions all around you. You almost forget you're in Japan!
Wow! I hope to be able to visit someday! Making my boyfriend go inside will be okay but his dad isn't afraid of dolls so I might have to leave these pic so out when showing home our trip lol
The bjds actually started as surrealist art dolls. The book 'secret doll underground' has a nice overview of the various artists and their dolls... volks wanted to open their resin sales outside of the male driven models and started commerially producing the bjd for the female collector...
I want to live there!!! It is like the doll cafe in the another anime I love how sad and memorable they are so cool and interesting
Thank you so much for the recommendation! I just ordered myself a copy on amazon Ahh! You've seen Another?! I love that anime. Funny story about it actually: My co-worker and I were talking about shows we liked and she asked me in English "Do you like Another anime?" So of course, I began telling her how much I loved it and most horror anime in general, but she looked really confused. After talking with her more, I realized that she meant to ask "Do you like any OTHER anime?" If she had just asked me in Japanese I would have understood the first time Now she knows I like weird stuff.
@ourtangledbones yes!!! It is in my top favorite anime i love it so much I didn’t expect the twist near the end and it made me very sad the ending it sticks with you if that make sense? It made me feel very sad I love horror genre my favorite movie is the descent, if you are interest in that do not watch part two that was very bad and ruined everything about the first movie and made it literal which does not make sense if you understood the first movie For anime Monster will always be number 1 for me it is nicely paced good ambience sound and great story for me it is the perfect anime. Also other than Another i really like Elfen Lied, Hell Girl, Mononoke, When they cry, Corpse Party Gantz is perfect manga it is a good manga with great story and chilling but the anime is realllly bad and boring. The cgi movie Gantz:0 is also very nice but you need to read the manga to understand because that chapter is near the end I don’t understand why they started at that chapter. The older movies I didn’t watch because it look corny and it was live and not cgi Do you have any recommendations? Next time I go to japan I will go to this museum it looks very beautiful and it amazing to see all the details in real life must have been hard to tone down excitement haha I went to the one in Ginza but the Yokohama looks much more interesting and twisted Weird is good!! It would be weird if your co worker liked the sweet anime’s like sailor moon and card captor and then you came out with a list of horror haha what was her expression and how was it later on? Maybe it was a bond experience haha English is very hard to learn many words are similar to each other i still have difficulty because words sometimes sound very similar like four fourteen fourty fourtyfour i have to focus to understand because it sounds almost the same if someone is talking fast reading it is easier and then there is the accent that makes it sound different also haha XD
Well, I wouldn't really call it horror, but I'm watching Devilman Crybaby right now and it's EXCELLENT (warning: very violent, lots of sex). They did a fabulous job remaking it. And I totally understand. It wasn't until I saw what my students had trouble understanding that I realized how hard of a language english is. They have a lot of trouble with "thirty" and "thirteen". Actually, even English speakers struggle with this too. Sometimes we have to ask "Thirty three-zero? Or thirteen one-three?" because it's so hard to hear the difference. And because theres no 'si' sound in Japanese (only 'shi'), my students have a lot of trouble pronouncing and differentiating between things like "sit" and "shit". Today we had fun learning the difference between "nicest" and "narcissist"
Your photos are all so beautiful! I definitely need to put this on my list for whenever I can make it to Yokohama.
Thank you!! I'm going to the Iwatsuki Doll Museum in Saitama later this month for spring break, so I'll share lots of photos of traditional Japanese dolls after that I'm also aiming to make it to Noe cafe, where there are many dollhouses on display and the Japanese doll community often has their meetups.
