Ok, I am going to use this method of using a DIY silicone mold.... Here's my prep! head to be molded and the Sillicone. The directions is pretty straight forwards. First of all Sealing the head with a few light coats sealent. (( will be posting more as I go along.))
and after placing the silicone on the head. I used two tubes of the silicone in the post above for this, I am hope that it would be firm enough to hold the shape and let flexable to get my orginal/cast out. Time to wait over night until it dries.
The Next Day: Yay! So far so good! The silicone dried very firmly, but has enough give so that it would be possible to pull my original out without taring. (I hope) I trimmed around the edges and silly me, I had forgetting to place any keys around the edges. And so I used a bit more silicone to create a very big "lip" around the edges so that hopefully, it will fit back in proper place snugly. ( I wrapped it in saran wrap and tied it with shore laces to keep the silicone from drooping down.... it looks like acupcake or a mushroom.) Time to wait another over night. Things to note: when I had trimmed off pieces of the mold, I notices that there are very fine bubbles within the silicone. While this doesn't bother me at all. I would say that this method would not work for pulling final castings. Since this experimental, I am hoping to pull a junk cast to work on resin bubbles would not bother me since my sculpt would need to be farther refined anyways.
good luck! i would be so scared to try this with any sculpts that might pull apart taking them out... rrr! good luck and more good luck!
The silicone dried and I pulled out my original with no problems or damages. I took it very slow and careful-like. The mold ended just how I had hoped. Firm yet just enough flex. The photos where taken the night before and I am in the process of hand roto-casting the ears and nose/mouth area. Since I am trying to avoid resin bubbles during casting. Once that dries I will be mixing more resin and leaving it to cure for a few days. The resin I am using is "Easy cast" clear, However it's probably very old more then 3 years old? Does two part resin when unmixed expire? anyways, still trying it out since I can't really afford to buy fresher supplies until next month. I had poured some water into the mold after making sure that it was closed firmly. Then measured that liquid. It will take my head between 60ml - 65ml of resin.
Ok, The resin is poured and is sitting in an out of the way place to cure. I won't be opening it until Tuesday evening to make sure that it's enough time for the resin to set. See you until then.
And here is the result of my first casting: Sticky! First castings are never perfect. :XD For some reason the resin's surface was very sticky. At first I thought it was the impromptu release agent I used. (Vicks vaporub) but when I checked the castings that I had made using my rubber latex mold with a hard ridged support, they came out so perfect! (I had even used my cheapy release agent.) It might be the type of silicone that I am using or something else entirely. Even with the non-success of my first casting I am very happy with my discoveries. ) The first casting ended up not being usable ,but I now have a bit more funds to buy more silicone. This time I am going to try a layer of rubber latex then a layer of silicone. And perhaps do this with more care and thought. (like putting the keys in top of the mold and a proper pouring gate.)
sad that it didn't turn out. but yay for knowledge! on to the next try! XD and i love that the castings are full of glitter.
I am trying one more time since I can't afford any more silicone anyways, so I used up the last of my resin to make one more cast in the silicone mold. I really loved how the glitter looked like. Since I am thinking of making eyes again I was experimenting. (The resin I used was old and very yellow.) If I can get more funds somewhere, I will be trying again if this next one doesn't turn out. need more silicone and resin.
