So I've liked the aesthetic for years, and I love the Cyberpunk 2077 game, and I've also done up a few Barbies so I decided it's time to make the leap to resin! The victims: Doll Family H Xiao Chan and Souldoll Milky Way, both picked up from the wonderful MaleficentMistressofEvil. Spoiler: poor babes Ignore my pencil scribbling. Xiao Chan has an EXTREME forehead, and is adorable and cute, so of course this means he will be receiving end of the more drastic mods. Milky Way will be receiving more aesthetic/gentler mods. To do: 1. Dremel holes/lines/etc. to fill with resin 2. Buy UV resin and dyes, shimmer, etc 3. Fill 'er up/apoxie mods where needed 4. Figure out LED light situation for Xiao Chan 5. Paint faces 6. Bodies/wigs/clothes etc.
So I started with Xiao Chan, because I'm stuck with about a foot of snow on the ground want desperately want to do something crafty. I am extremely inspired by the Maelstrom faction in 2077. They're terrible people, but the LOOK IS AMAZING. Spoiler: lots of eyes, metal I got carried away with the Dremel, but I think when I apoxie "frames" around the lenses I can make everything symmetrical again. Ish. I just keep going even when I know I should stop!! One day I'll learn . He'll get some additional inlays as well as bulked up metal jaw. I might insert some wires and slim the cheeks down too. We'll see!
I love it! What a look forward to seeing how you leave them. I have one doll with a robotic arm and another one her makeup is Cyberpunk inspired too .
Ooh, this looks really interesting, googled Maelstrom faction 2077 and looking forward to seeing the results
@Karin88 Thanks! I love robot limbs, your dolls sound awesome! @lachryphage This https://michaldziekan.artstation.com/projects/8eZOKE artist in particular is a good overview of the faction. It looks like my picture broke up in my main post! @kyukyukyu thank you! I just think they're neat in a grim sort of way.
I loved Edgerunners and cyberpunk stuff in general, so this is definitely one to watch for me. The Maelstrom one looks like it's going to be insane once everything is set up-I love seeing what people can pull off with LEDs, and hopefully the removable head backs of BJDs makes getting everything set up easier.
This is gunna look sweet when finished. I adored Edgerunners, and actually started playing CP 2077 because of it. I'm not far yet, but I have run into a couple of the Maelstrom faction. Those kind of mods in resin will look badass. I've never seen the progress of adding LED to dolls, so I'll def be popping back as progress is made. Good luck! Also, when you used the dremel, did you free hand the head or use a clamp to hold it? I've been looking into ear piecing, but on a large fox ear, and haven't really found a definitive method.
@Cryptid I've figured out a no wire solution to the LEDS! There are these little button lamps Amazon link They're very bright, small, and adhesive, so I'm planning on ordering some and giving it a whirl! @NetherFox Thanks! Edgerunners was a blast for sure. I did free hand the Dremel, and it wasn't too hard. I actually used the bit in my hand first to make an indent so the bit wouldn't skip on a completely smooth surface. If I was doing something delicate like ear piercing I might want to use a non power drill though. I have a teeny one meant for miniatures that works nicely on resin so I don't go too far too fast! And progress pics! album here I need to work on symmetry, build up the jaw a bit more, frames for the smaller eyes, general smoothing, and sharpening of edges so the shapes look less organic. I'm going to drill the holes bigger to let more light through. I'm on the fence if he needs hair or not. His noggin is HUGE, and it makes me want to slim it down but I'm afraid of going too far. Hair would just make it bigger.
Just checked out the progress pics... those mods are so spooky looking! Love it... And yeah, I'm leaning towards a non power drill method. I've used a hand Dremel with beads in jewel making before, so I'll likely give that a shot when the time comes. It just takes so looooooooong. lol
So things have predictably gone horribly wrong! The sculping continued well, things were sanded and sharpened nicely. So I decided to pour the resin lenses in. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HAVE BADLY YOU NEED A WATERTIGHT SEAL. CHECK IT. I am currently still cleaning partially set red resin from inside Xiao Chan's head cavity. And face. And everywhere else. Fortunately I had him propped nicely in a box so the run off was contained there. Next time I am sealing around literally everything with hot glue, and we'll try again tomorrow. On the positive side, the excess resin I poured into my half sphere mold is beautifully clear and bubble free.
Oh no! I've watched miniature diorama videos where the resin is used for water effects, and yeah, there's ways it can go...awry. Both with leaks and with big ol' cracks. How do you get the partially set resin out?
@Cryptid I scooped some out/wiped it up when it was a thickish consistency, and now several hours later it hardened to almost a gummy candy texture. It peeled off fairly easily, just with some acetone where it was really stuck. The spare stuff I poured looks perfect. No bubbles, crystal clear. I'm almost glad this failed though, since it's more a candy apple red than what I wanted. I'll need to add a little more dye next time. I'm going to wait the full 24 hour cure time to make sure I did everything right. I don't want this flexible at all.
SUCCESS!!!! It took 2 more pours but he's perfect!! The button lamp just barely fits in there, and it's super bright!
This is fantastic... The light is bright and spooky looking. Makes for a great look. I only know this by proxy, as I've never done it, but I know pouring resin can be so finicky. I'm real glad it worked out.
That light effect is super cool! Well, the whole project is, of course, but the last image really makes him shine.
Oh my gosh I am loving this. Cyberpunk aesthetic is my one of my favourites, and I'd love to try make a cyborg doll in the future. Those LEDs amazing! Definitely following this to see more of it ❤️❤️
Heyo, just checking in. I was curious how your build is going? Any fun breakthroughs with the spooky lights or sculpting? I wish you all the progress!
Thank you all very much for your super nice comments! It's fun to have other people along for the ride. Unfortunately, no huge updates. I preemptively painted most of his jaw as I was tired of looking at the gross greyish color of my apoxie sculpt. I need to pick up an engraving bit for my Dremel to make the rest of the cyberware permanent, and to add it to his body. I also slimmed his cheeks down a tad more, but that's not too noticable. And for that body, I'm about halfway through my wait from Resinsoul for their 45 cm body with some grey transparent parts. I'm going to string him in red, and etch some panels on his torso and probably do some alterations/mechanical looking bits on his arms and legs. But it should be here at the end of the month/beginning of next month! I'm also struggling with outfit concepts. I don't know how much skin I actually want showing, and it may be the case of having to see him assembled in-hand to know for certain.
Oh, and here's the body reference I sent in to Resinsoul! Body reference Body reference The picture itself doesn't want to post, sorry about that! I am still trying to figure out who the other head I have is. I can't put my finger on their gender or style yet, but I'll get there, and grab them a body eventually.
HIS BODY IS HERE!!!!! I need to dye the torso piece a bit yellower and Dremel in body paneling but he looks GREAT. Resinsoul is the absolute best! Apologies for my awful lighting. I live in a basement apartment now. I might try dripping some gloss varnish down the channels to help make the resin as clear as possible. He now needs a faceup and to fill in his face cyberware with resin. And decide on hair? and an outfit, and actually make them! Album: Cyberpunk body
:0 I loved watching the process . Saving this for reference for later. I do adore the clear resin. Probably cyber punk is ideal since the elastic can be interpreted as cables/wires. Can't wait for more updates
Hey I've finally got updates! I dyed his body to better match his head. It's still pinker, but I can add pinks to his faceup. Spoiler: dyed comparison I then dremeled cyberware into his chest piece. I sketched out all sorts of designs, but ended up deciding simple was better. I want to add something to his lower body, but can't decide what I want. It's also much more difficult to get straight lines on a bumpy, curved surface. Spoiler: etching Filling in the 'ware was where I once again ran into trouble. Since it's just a tiny bit of resin, it took a long time to set, so it dripped and I could only put a few tiny drops in a time. It took FOUR PASSES to get the channels full on the body (and it's still not perfect). In retrospect, I should've used UV resin, but I didn't want to buy anything else. When I do the next doll, I'll give in and buy some. But I did just a few drops each of resin and hardener and a tiny drop of metallic alcohol ink. It's a black, metallic glittery line, and it's pretty cool in person.
It's lovely to see him with the body. This is such a unique project. I love the efect of the transparent arms and all the colour choices you've made.
