(base: gaiaonline.com) I was looking for a doll to cosplay my character Cyanure ( http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v185/kiriko/fichecyanure.jpg ), but a manly man doll, with a very suntan skin (he's a gipsy), that's not going to happen so soon, so I'm taking the home made BJD path! yay! First attempt at sculpting a head, I made several mistakes, and ended up with a unusable face, which is too bad because I was quite happy with it, and have absolutely no idea how I made it T-T So teaching n°1 (those are my mental notes to myself, don't talke them personnally ^_^): -I thought aluminium core + half baking to solidify the details and then head caping and taking the aluminium off whil the inside was still soft was a good idea. It wasn't ^^; -I forgot the neck place (I don't own a BJD yet, so I don't know how you attach the head to the neck, I've heard of S hook and mineral -forgot the word- thing, but it's still not clear u_u;;; ) -forgot the eyes (too thick layer) -aluminium core wasn't centered, so the face is asymetrical (I couldn't correct the mistake because I had no clay to remove on the left, it's very thin T-T) -don't bake it if you're not totally happy with it! -what's with the bulbous eyelid?!! AND QUESTION n°1 !!! can I make a mold of the face by pressing super sculptey on it, then oven it, and again press sculptey in the sculptey mold ?
They do make a really soft kind of sculpey that's for making molds, but you'd probably have t get about two boxes of it. http://www2d.biglobe.ne.jp/~dhnoah/make_00.htm Before I got my first doll I looked at this page and that helped a lot in construction. It's too bad about the cracks and stuff, he looks awesome!
A lot of your complaints look like they could be solved with a little sanding. Namely the tiny bit of jaw that looks off and the eyes. I really like him asymetrical actually... Makes him look more like a person. That and it's a neat expression. As for the neck hole there's a dip inwards around the top of the neck and there's a longish oval cut into the head in the middle of that dip that the elastic is pulled through. When people talk about S hooks it's usually to attatch the elastic to a little bar on the inside of the headcap. Also it can be attatched to a semi freefloating peice of resin inside the head that lays in a way to keep it from leaving that oval cut again. I personally think fastening it at the neck is better than a bar on the headcap but that's just because it makes changing eyes easier and is less strain on the headcap. Which is especially important if your doll isn't made of resin.
Batchix > thank you for the link! you're an uber talented girl, by the way ^_^ Babytarragon > thank you =^_^= first person who saw him went "Why did you do a psychopath?" (which may not really have been a compliment, but still made me happy ^_^) TeaTime> thank you for taking the time to explain everything to me, you're very nice!
